Chapter 1

"Star, when are you gonna cook for me?” Shana whined.

Star rolled her eyes at her short friend, who pouted at her like a child as she leaned on her kitchen island. “Never with you begging like that. Why does everybody keep asking me that?”

“I don't know. You always watching those foodie youtube channels. Plus Elderess Sanders always said you made delicious crab cakes.”

“ Yeah but that was Grandma. Just cause she liked them doesn't mean they're good.”

“Don't you work at Carl's? You're not cooking there?"

“No.I just wait on people. I'm only there cause Grandma asked."

“You should try making something for someone other than yourself. Maybe you'll be good at it.”

Star ignored her and decided to start washing dishes. Everybody she knew got this strange notion that she knew how to cook well. That the food she made was delicious.

It wasn't like she looked like she ate good; she was tall and had some meat on her;mostly on her thighs and behind. She looked like she burned more calories than having consumed them.

It was a weird thing people assumed about her and Grandma didn't help it. She thought her being a chef was the perfect career path.

Star was too scared to try. She was scared not of failure–but of finding emptiness, an illusion of sucess, of placement in this world. She often felt like her name: far far away, stuck in the sky, afraid of falling and never landing anywhere.

Despite her existential numbness, she felt she was doing OK for herself, keeping Grandmas' house and now working at Carl's. It was to honor Grandma who was trying to get her over there for years.

Shana picked up Grandmas' jewelry box. She always kept it in the kitchen. Don't you worry bout it, she always said when Star asked why. She only told her to wear something from it whenever she left the house.

Shana was given free access to the jewlrey box as well. She opened it and gently fingered the bracelets and rings. “I can't believe it's already been a month.” Her voice was soft. "How you holding up?"

Star sighed. “I wake myself up talking to her. Responding to something she's said, only I don't remember what it was. It's like she's still here but just in the next room or the corner of my eye.”

Shana nodded, tears in her eyes. They both sat in silence, and Star felt safe to let the quiet tears run down her face without being consoled or hushed with "It's OK," and "She's in a better place."

Shana always knew how to hold space for Star. Her capacity to understand her was what made them friends for so long.

When the sadness passed over the both of them, Star asked, “What are you doing this weekend?”

“I'm going upstate remember?”

“That's this weekend? I need you to do my hair.”

“Uh-uh, I been on your ass about getting that blonde weave out, now you gotta do it yourself. Looking like a busted Beyonce. Speaking of busted, I seen the weirdest shit the other day. This skinny woman was on the edge of the creek biting a tree.”

“What?”

“She was just taking a bite out of it like a sandwich. I never seen anyone a skinny as she was. Looked like Beloved.”

“Who?”

“Please, Star, I know Elderess Sanders let you watch some movies. Anyways keep your eye out for any weirdos."

"Allright." Star looked at the jewelry box. "Take this with you."

"Really?"

"Yeah, I don't know. I feel you should take it. Maybe good luck or something."

"You don't have to tell me twice!"

With her hair up in a honey colored bun (edges hidden under a silk pink scarf,) Star worked the counter at Carl's Old-Timey Diner. It was crowded as usual, people bustling in from work and out to party.

What was unusual was this song stuck in her head. It trickled into the diner from the cool evening and wormed it's way into her head. Something from a movie? An old Rihanna song?

“Nice tune.”

She looked up from collecting dishes to see a woman at the edge of the counter, caressing a teacup full of something red. Thin, with rich brown skin, her eyes were hidden under black bangs, the rest of her hair cascading down a loose maroon dress. Only lips painted black and high cheekbones were visible.

Disheveled is the word in Stars' head. Needing fixing. She honestly looked like she came out of a Tyler Perry horror--but something about her made Star want to see her eyes.

“Is the food good here? I'm starving.” Her voice rasped like a smokers.

“Yes ma'am it is. Best pecan pies you'll find around.”

“Give me three of them,” She said softly.

A command. It stirred something warm deep within Star. The mysterious song echoed there, and before she knew it she layed out three huge pecan pies.

The woman began to eat.

Star was ripped away by a group of teens ordering chicken and waffles but whenever she could she would glance at this woman quietly shovel fork after fork of pecan pie into her mouth.

Star took her break. She returned and saw the woman still seated, with the pie tins neatly piled in front of her.

She smiled at Star, and waved her over.

“Water,” she said. Immediately a hiccup jerked through her body causing her breasts, which Star never noticed before, to slightly bounce. It was cute.

Star brought a pint full of water for her. The woman smiled again, hiccuped, then began to slowly gulp down the water.

Star felt compelled to watch the water go down her throat, the loud gulps…tantalizing.

Whats wrong with me? Why am I feeling…

"Your name?" The woman interrupted her. She had been finished for a while and was smiling at her. Her voice was no longer raspy, but clear, mellow. A song.

“Star.”

The woman brushed her bangs aside. Large brown eyes gaze upon Star. Reading. Examining. Her lips, fuller now, curled into a smile. “What are you doing this weekend?”

Speedpaint Tutorial

Hi i want to make a little tutorial of how to make a speedpaint/timelapse

I will talk about programs, music and editing, this will be a long post (kinda) so i will leave all the tutorial under the cut so it won’t take all the space on your screen

1-Programs

There is a lot of programs to record and editing, i personally use Camtasia Studio (both recording and editing) and OBS/Streamlabs OBS (recording)

Camtasia:

Camtasia can record the screen, microphone and the audio from your computer, plus, you can edit videos on there; is a little limited if you want to make really complex videos and can be laggy if your computer isn't powerful enough. Camtasia have a cost of $300 USD approx (one-time purchase), the license let you have the program installed in 2 devices at once, so you can split the license with a friend if both of you want them

Again, can be really laggy (Camtasia 8 work better) and the recording can be really heavy, 3 GB just for half an hour sometimes, that's why i would recommend you using this just for basic editing; for recording however i recommend:

OBS/Streamlabs OBS:

OBS is a free program commonly used for streaming, but it have an option for recording the screen Unlike Camtasia, OBS let you choose between record the whole screen or just record the program you are using, this can let you use other programs, navigate thru internet or just record specific parts and not worry about having to cut it out later, unfortunally OBS doesn’t have and option to pause the recording you have to stop it and press record again

Depending of how you configure the options on OBS, the recording can be really heavy so keep an eye on that

If you just want to make simple speedpaint videos:

I would recommend you to use OBS and Movie maker, both of them are free and don’t let a watermark on the video Despite of the reputation of Movie maker, is a good program for simple editing and for my knowledge is on the microsoft store so you can download there (i think, i have never use the microsoft store)

Please do not use VSDC

The program isn’t a malware itself, but gets hacked a lot So be safe and remain away from that program

2- Music

This point doesn't have too much mystery, basically:

If you dont care about copyright, you can use any song really, however depending of the song, the video can get limited in some countries on youtube/facebook/Vimeo

If you do care about copyright, here are some channels with copyright free music, just keep in mind that you need to put the credits on somewhere on the video or in the description

3- Editing

Depending on the program you can have more or less options but

For the speed, it depends on how fast you want it to be, just pay attention on how it looks

For exporting i will recommend you to keep it between 480p-1080p

Neko-rina made a tutorial of how they export their videos, and even if it a good tutorial and show you how to export high quality videos, that can result in heavy videos that take some time in upload to youtube

You may see some timelapse videos on my accounts, that is an option of Clip studio paint, it record and speed up be itself and only lets you choose between 15, 30, 60 seconds or full timelapse that is between 60 seconds to 5 minutes approx

i wish i could link you to an easy tutorial that would answer all of your questions, but i don't even remember what i used when i started to make gifs some time in 2020. it's a lot of work, it takes a mountain of patience, but ultimately it's so nice to make your own gifs. you create your own material of whatever you want (or well, whatever you find content of). and the little boost of pride when i post a fic i've written that includes a gif i've made too? oof, i like it 🥰

my method has just grown more and more archaic to try and adjust to tumblr's gif size issues, to new features and blah blah blah. let me try to roughly explain it though! i don't have the skills to write a proper tutorial of my own, i'm so sorry! but thank you for stopping by to say all of these nice words! 💗

i have like 3$ and a sticky caramel candy in my wallet so i don't use photoshop (there is a BUNCH of tutorials on how to make gifs properly using photoshop, i'd suggest googling it and seeing who on tumblr have posted about it if you have access to the good stuff) plus my poor laptop could never survive such a thing. my technique is definitely not the fastest or the most practical, it takes hours to make a handful of gifs. first, i prefer to use high quality youtube videos that i download (i tried screen recording but the website i used just died so back to youtube clips i go! rip making gifs of jake movies outside of the trailers it was fun while it lasted). then, i use ezgif to make gifs! you can edit gifs directly through ezgif, it's basically built for that. this is what i used at the beginning and it was very effective. now that i'm making so many more gifs and i'm a tiny bit more comfortable than i was at the beginning, i turn to photopea. after cutting my chosen youtube video into gifs, i'll take that gif into photopea to edit it.

the key element that i edit is the size, tumblr has very precise sizes for image content if you want them to display properly. 540 px wide for full width gifs or 268 px for gifsets that have 2 gifs next to each other. so i try to resize and crop the gifs to make them fit the proper sizes. BUT tumblr has a size limit of 10 mb per gifs, so it can get tricky. i also like to make a gif sharper or brighter. i'm not skilled to make beautiful colourings (plus, photopea isn't very suited for it since a lot of colourings use features that aren't working in photopea but they are present in photoshop) and i don't know how to use most features to begin with so i stick with what i know. like curves? what the fuck is a curve. so yeah, i stick to the features i use regularly. then i export the gif into, well, a gif and i can post them on tumblr.

obviously, using photoshop is best. ezgif is amazing for what it is, same for photopea, and they're both free!!! but they don't produce the highest quality content. i remember back in 2020 when i looked at different people's gifs that were made with photopea, there was a VERY clear difference. even for people with a lot more skills and experience than i do, i've noticed that the gifs always have a level of blurriness and a pixelated aspect that can't be erased. the gifs almost look fuzzy instead of crispy? i don't know how else to describe it, but it's a never ending grief of pretty, crispy gifs. i've learned a lot through googling every little thing and function, but also through trial and error. i'd click through different functions and features and i'd see what happens (do this one step at a time, take notes too! i used to take notes of many little details at first so my gifs stayed a bit consistent). sometimes it works, sometimes you've spent hours on something and you have to delete it and abandon the project. it happens and it's normal.

i'm absolutely NOT tech savvy, like it's actually depressing, so i genuinely mean it when i say that if i can learn to make gifs then anyone can. i wish i had the talent and equipment and money to make the cripsy gifs of my dreams, but i still try my very best with each gif i make. i try to respect the limits of my poor laptop that cries for help after an intense 15 minutes of work, but i also try to respect my own limits. i gif for myself first and foremost. i gif what i want to gif. i gif stuff that makes me happy because now i can look at this short little clip move on loop forever. i suggest you start small, like with a quick video, with a few gifs and see what happens! at best, it works! at worst, it didn't but maybe you learned one step and it will be easier next time! starting small is my best piece of advice. i was way too ambitious at the beginning and i highly regret it, you can get burned out so quickly just like with any other creative project. it's okay to struggle, it's okay if it doesn't look as good as you wished it did. making gifs is not easy, but it's absolutely worth it. i've got my pompoms out and i'm cheering you on! like i said, if i've managed to spend hourssssssssss making hundreds of silly little jake gifs during the last few years, then you can absolutely create one gif that you're happy with! good luck with your giffing journey and thank you so much for your sweet words in your message! 💖💖💖

TMS Entertainment, a beloved Japanese animation studio currently owned by Sega Holdings Inc., a subsidiary of SegaSammy holdings, has just announced that for their 60th anniversary, they’ll begin uploading special animated features of significant importance to the company to their official YouTube page. Most noteworthy to Sega/Sonic fans, this includes the first six episodes of Sonic X in its original Japanese dub. The entire campaign begins on August 5th, 2024. This is a good chance to get a taste of what Sonic X was originally like, free of both English voices and the cacophony of censorship edits imposed on it in its original English dub by 4Kids Entertainment

Gotta go fast as you rush past the break for the skinny on this special event. GO! GO! GO! GO! LET’S GO!

As stated above, Sonic will be the one to kick off TMS Entertainment’s 60th anniversary celebration on August 5th. On that day, at noon EST, 9AM PST, they will upload episode 1: The Supersonic Hero Takes The Stage, in its original Japanese format with English subtitles. On August 6th, episode 2 will follow, then episode 3 on August 7th, and so on, but episode 6 will come on August 12th instead of August 10th. Strangely, their schedule says they will upload episode 5 again on August 13th-16th. Based on this, it’s possible each episode besides episode 5 will only be online for one day, so just in case, make time to catch each episode on the upload date.

Scam Scooter

My Transformer Remote Control Folding Electric Scooter has finally arrived!

   All for the low, low cost of $48.03 (USD) - including $12.00 (USD) shipping cost and $1.05 (USD) shipping insurance.    Normally $699.00 (USD), it was a huge savings, especially with the Spare Lithium Battery - Transformer/Mobie Plus as advertised on Facebook.    The advertisement even mentioned a basket and cupholder that they would throw in for free. So cool. Except it's not the right color, unless the box counts.

Doesn't quite look like the picture on the receipt either.

 

 Nor does it look at all like the item shown in the video from the ad on Facebook. I'm not thinking I will be able to ride the product I received, let alone drive over parking blocks or carry full bottles of water from the water cooler.

   Hmmm, could I have been scammed? Was an item listed hundreds of dollars below market price really too good to be true? But it was on Facebook! A Walmart New Year's Special. See, they are even running an ad now for Walmart Valentine's Day. It must be legit! Listed under multiple companies like Circuihy Store, Confirnug A, Genrosixh, Technicul, Bloerovestar shop, and many, many others, there is no way this could be a scam. Wait, is Adequatia offering the same product for only $33.99 (USD) on Facebook? Oh man, if I had only waited, I could have paid less. What was I thinking?    To be honest, what I was thinking was: This is a scam. Let's see what shows up.    It was like purchasing the Mystery Bag at the dime store, wondering what surprise awaited inside the brown paper bag. Undoubtedly it would be worth half of the purchase price. I was under no illusions, I knew that this was a scam - thus I used Paypal to make the purchase and protect my accounts.     It was the source of countless entertaining hours for my husband and I as we speculated what we might receive. Would it just be the remote control for the scooter? Maybe a lifelike toy? Or perhaps something altogether different. Some people spend $50.00 (USD) to go to the movies. We never even had to leave the comfort of our own home. The big day finally came.

    My purchase had arrived! But... there was no box on the porch. The box in the video was fairly sizeable, so it is not like I could overlook it. I checked in the back yard thinking maybe the delivery driver just didn't want to leave it on the front porch. Our street is fairly busy, but it was not there either. There was no package next to the mailbox, however, when I looked inside...there it was! Or wasn't, depending on your expectations.    As for me, I was expecting a package. Not necessarily the item I ordered, but a package.

And I did indeed receive a package.

Moreover, it was a package with TWO mailing labels.

   I wasn't terribly surprised to find that the item I ordered wasn't made in the USA, as advertised. It came from much, much farther away.

   As expected, the item I received, although quite a handy product, was also worth much less than I paid.

   Perhaps there was a mix up in shipping, a direct result of our government shooting down that innocent civilian balloon from China. It could have been a relay balloon for consumer purchases. Maybe it was an honest mistake, after all, the packaging was BLUE and the item I ordered was BLUE. I can see how such a mix up may occur. When they said it was manufactured in California, it might have meant the ad was created in California.

   Or, more likely, it was a deliberate SCAM, as reported on Reddit, YouTube, Myownwheels.com, and www.info.com among the many places I found the scam alert. I wasn't surprised. A quick search on the internet will show the price of mobility scooters anywhere from $699.00 to $4000.00 (USD). I was just a tad disappointed that I didn't receive the gray earmuffs that most people received from the scammers.    I was also grateful not to be on a fixed income where such entertainment might be devastating, both emotionally and financially. If you ever find yourself in doubt about an advertised product, research, shop around, and ask someone you trust to take a look at an item before you hit the "purchase" button. Scams are becoming the new norm, preying on the unsuspecting and desperate. They come complete with legitimate looking logos, secure payment sites, and robotically driven confirmations and tracking information. The only thing scammers lack is a sense of morals.

So let my entertainment be a warning. If it seems too good to be true...IT IS!!!

Do you use sarcasm much? A little, but it doesn’t really come across because I don’t vary my voice much because autism.

What sports do you play? I don’t do any sports at the moment for a lot of reasons, but I used to do Muay Thai and also horseback riding. I kind of want to try fencing but I think that would kill me.

First thing you notice in other people? I don’t really look at people…. (because autism) so probably height I guess and also their voice/tone.

Eye colour? It’s definitely yellow like how I draw it— Brown.

Scary movies or happy endings? I can’t really watch scary stuff because I get really bad paranoia, so happy endings I guess. I like it when movies make me feel good.

Any special talents? I’m really good at learning how to do new things. It’s why I kind of collect hobbies. I just decide I want to do something, spend a few hours researching, and then do it. My family calls it magic, I call it the power of hyperfixation.

Where were you born? Florida. I hate it here.

What are your hobbies? Mostly drawing. I also play video games, sew, and have recently gotten into bookbinding. I used to knit and really want to pick it up again, too.

Do you have any pets? Two dogs. One is very old and grumpy and the other is young and can jump really high and they are quite the duo. I love them so much. I used to have some fish but they died and I decided not to get new ones after that.

These are all sort of related to backgrounds/painting so I grouped them together even though they’re pretty much entirely separate questions.... ANYWAYS

a) How is it working as a BG artist? Is it hard? What show are you drawing for?

I think you’re the first person to ever ask me about my job! Being a background artist is great. It’s definitely labor intensive but I think that could describe pretty much any art job (If something were rote or easy to automate, you wouldn’t hire an artist to do it) and I hesitate to say whether its harder or easier than any other role in the animation pipeline. Plus, so much of what truly makes a job difficult varies from one production to the next, schedule, working environment, co-workers etc. But I will say that I think while BGs are generally a lot of work on the upfront, I think they’re subject to less scrutiny/revisions than something like character/props/effects design and you don’t have to pitch them to a room like boards. So I guess it’s good if you don’t like to talk to people? LOL

A lot of my previous projects + the show I’ve worked on the longest aren’t public yet so I can’t talk about em (but I assure you if/when the news does break I won’t shut up about it). But I’m currently working on Archer Season 12 LOL. I’m like 90% sure I’m allowed to say that.

c) What exactly do you like to draw most [in a background]?

@kaitomiury​ Lots of stuff! I really like to draw clutter! Because it’s a great opportunity for environmental storytelling and also you can be kind of messy with it because the sheer mass will supersede any details LOL. 

I like to draw clouds... I like to draw grass but not trees lol,,, I like to draw anything that sells perspective really easily like tiled floors and ceilings, shelves, lamp posts on a street etc.

d) Do you have any tips on how to paint (observational)?

god there’s so much to say. painting is really a whole ass discipline like someone can paint their whole life and still discover new things about it. I guess if you’re really just starting out my best advice is that habit is more important than product. especially with traditional plein air painting, I find that the procedure of going outside and setting up your paints is almost harder than the actual painting. There’s a lot of artists who say “I want to do plein air sometime!!” and then never actually get around to doing it. A lot of people just end up working from google streetview or photos on their computer.

But going outside to paint is a really good challenge because it forces you to make and commit to lighting and composition decisions really quickly. And to work through your mistakes instead of against them via undo button.

My last tip is to check out James Gurney’s youtube channel because hes probably the best and most consistent resource on observational painting out there rn. There’s lots other artists doing the same thing (off the top of my head I know a lot of the Warrior Painters group has people regularly posting plein air stuff and lightbox expo had a Jesse Schmidt lecture abt it last year) but Gurney’s probably the most prolific poster and one of the best at explaining the more technical stuff - his books are great too.

e) Do you have tips for drawing cleanly on heavypaint?

@marigoldfool​ UMM LOL I LIKE ONLY USE THE FILL TOOL so maybe use the fill tool? Fill and rectangle are good for edge control as opposed to the rest of the heavy paint tools which can get sort of muddles. And also I use a stylus so maybe if you’re using your finger, find a stylus that works with your device instead. That’s all I’ve got, frankly I don’t think my drawings are particularly clean lol.

f) Tips on improving backgrounds/scenes making them more dynamic practicing etc?

Ive given some tips about backgrounds/scenes before so I’m not gonna re-tread those but here’s another thing that might be helpful...

I think a good way to approach backgrounds is to think of the specific story or even mood you want to convey with the background first. Thinking “I just need to put something behind this character” is going to lead you to drawing like... a green screen tourist photo backdrop. But if you think “I need this bg to make the characters feel small” or “I need this bg to make the world feel colorful” then it gives you requirements and cues to work off of.

If I know a character needs to feel overwhelmed and small, then I know I need to create environment elements that will cage them in and corner them. If a character needs to feel triumphant/on top of the world then I know I need to let the environment open up around them. etc. If I know my focal point/ where I want to draw attention, I can build the background around that.

Also, backgrounds like figure compositions will have focal points of their own and you can draw attention to it/ the relationship the characters have with the bg element via scale or directionality or color, any number of cues. I think of it almost as a second/third character in a scene.

Not every composition is gonna have something so obvious like this but it helps me to think about these because then the characters feel connected and integrated with the environment.

Some more general art questions

a) Do you have any process/tips to start drawing character/bodies/heads?

I tried to kind of draw something to answer this but honestly this is difficult for me to answer because I don’t think I’m that great at drawing characters LOL. Ok, I think I have two tips.

1) flip your canvas often. A lot about what makes human bodies look correct and believable is symmetry and balance. Even if someone has asymmetrical features, the body will often pull and push in a way to counterbalance it. we often have inherent biases to one side or another like dominant hands dominant eyes etc. you know how right-handed artists will often favor drawing characters facing 45 degrees facing (the artist’s) left? that’s part of it. so viewing your drawing flipped even just to evaluate it helps compensate for that bias and makes you more aware of balance.

2) draw the whole figure often. I feel like a lot of beginner artists (myself included for a long time) defer to just drawing headshots or busts because it’s easier, you dont have to think about posing limbs etc. But drawing a full body allows you to better gauge proportion, perspective, body language, everything that makes a character look believable and grounded.

Like if you (me) have that issue where you draw the head too big and then have to resize it to fit the proportions of the rest of the body, it’s probably because you (I) drew the head first and are treating the body as an afterthought/attachment. Sketching out the whole figure first or even just quick drawing guides for it will help you think of it more holistically. I learned this figure drawing in charcoal at art school LOL.

oh. third mini tip - try to draw people from life often! its the best study. if you can get into a figure drawing/nude drawing class EVEN BETTER and if you have a local college/art space/museum that hosts those for free TREASURE IT AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT, that’s a huge boon that a lot of artists (me again) wish they had. though if youre not so lucky and youre sitting in a park trying to creeper draw people and they keep moving.. don’t let that stop you! that’s good practice because it’s forcing you to work fast to get the important stuff down LOL. its a challenge!

b) I’ve been pretty out of energy and have had no inspiration to draw but I have the desire to. Any advice?

Dude, take a walk or something.... Or a nap? Low energy is going to effect everything else so you gotta hit that problem at its source.

If you’re looking for inspiration though, I’d recommend stuff like watching a movie, reading a book, playing video games etc. Fill up your idea bank with content and then give yourself time/space to gestate it into new concepts. Sometimes looking at other art works but sometimes it can work against you because it’s too close. 

Also something that helps me is remembering that art doesn’t always have to be groundbreaking... like it’s okay to make something shitty and stupid that you don’t post online and only show to your friend. That’s all part of the process imo. If you want to hit a home run you gotta warm up first, right? Sports.

I should probably compile everytime i give tips on stuff like this but that’s getting dangerously close to being a social media artist who makes stupid boiled down art tutorials for clout which is the last thing i want to be... the thing I want to stress is that art is a whole visual language and there are widely agreed upon rules and customs but they exist in large part to be broken. Like there's an infinite number of ways to reach an infinite number of solutions and that’s actually what makes it really cool and personal for both the artist and the viewer. So when you make work you like or you find someone else’s work you like, take a step back and ask yourself what about it speaks for you, what about it works for you, what makes it effective, how to recreate that effect and how to break that effect completely, etc. And have a good time with it or else what’s the point.

For the last one, I don’t actually believe I’ve ever addressed artwork as insp for stories/rp but I’ll say here and now yeah go ahead! As long as you’re not making profit or taking credit for my work then I’m normally ok with it. Especially anything thats private and purely recreational, that’s generally 100% green light go. I only ask that if you post it anywhere public that you please credit me.

(and I reserve the right to ask you to take it down if I see it and don’t approve of it’s use but I think that case is pretty rare.)

Summary: pure exhaustion and mutual pining, Tom Holland x actress!reader

^(just thought this was cute, doesn't really fit aha but full credit to op!!)

A scheduling nightmare would be putting it lightly. Perhaps almost unavoidable but that didn’t make it any less of a hellish form a torture. Harry had very helpfully said it actually was a form of torture, that is sleep deprivation. Y/n loved her job - it was all she’d ever really wanted - yet that thought was quickly becoming not enough to get her through the day. Not when it felt like an interrogation tactic used by the CIA. 

To give a quick timeline of the past few days may give a little context:

Thursday - filming the fight scene all day plus an evening-turned-half-the-night-shoot due to some technically difficulties delaying the process.

Friday - flying to New York while doing read throughs of scenes for the next few days; followed immediately by getting glammed and filming the tonight show with Fallon; then a dash across town to the late late show with James Corden; then straight back on a flight to Atlanta that landed at stupid o’clock in the morning

Saturday - a full day of shooting in a mock grand central station set

The press trip to NY had been unplanned… to say the least. But the star of their studios other new release had taken ill - meaning they had slots booked on some of the biggest talk shows in America that would just be abandoned (angering the shows bookers too). It was a waste of perfectly good promo time and since the studio had their two other stars together doing a block of reshoots - it wasn’t a conversation. Much more a call demanding the two of them to be on the plane.

Normally this wouldn’t be such an unmanageable ask either, except the reshoot block was really rather time pressured. You see, the promo tour wasn’t far from beginning meaning they really needed the final film in the can. So really it was a bit of a mess. Just to free up that single day the two were in New York the whole schedule had had to be rejigged - in doing so they’d lost a rare day off too. It was just typical.  

The joys of success hey?

Well, that’s at least what Y/n was making herself think whilst her incredibly talented SFX artist was in the process of crafting a deep wound onto her upper arm. The reason why she would be ‘dripping with blood’ whilst at a train station was beyond Y/n to be honest - she hadn’t been allowed to read a lot of the script so even now as filming was drawing to a close, the story arc of the movie she was headlining was still a little ‘fuzzy’.

“So I watched your ‘spill your guts’ thing on YouTube” Ellie giggled whilst reaching over for more prosthetic putty- a technical term apparently

“I’m glad one of us enjoyed the experience” Y/n replied with a sigh, rolling her eyes at the mischievous smirk on her face - no doubt Ellie took great joy out of seeing her suffer through eating a thousand year old egg. Which Y/n swore the taste of was still in her mouth… and it seemed as though it’d never leave. 

“Oh don’t worry darling I did too” Nelli called over from the next chair along, where she was doing Tom’s makeup for the day of shoots. “Between that and the animals on Fallon, you made a hell of a lot of people laugh last night” Tom’s artist was referencing the fact one of Jimmys other guests was a zookeeper, so at the end of the interview he had you and Tom join in trying not to scream at the snakes and spiders.

“You mean laugh at us?” 

“Well of course darling!” Nelli exclaimed back in an overdramatic bronx accent making all three of the women burst out laughing, Ellie’s unceremonious snorts echoing through the trailer only egged them all on more.

Tom in response, who had otherwise been absent from conversation for the majority of the morning, exclaimed a curse and jumped up in his chair. While you and Ellie collected yourself, Nelli apologised to him.

“Oh sorry love, I’m interrupting your snooze with my uncontrollable comedic gift” She spoke sweetly, even if still taking the moment to flaunt to the other women, as she squeezed his shoulder compassionately.

“No no” Tom waved off her apology, attempting to rub his eye before Nelli swatted his arm away - a stern look for the risk of ruining all her hard work she’d put into making his face look half presentable. 

“I’m impressed you can sleep while they poke you with all these er instruments” Y/n added in, having only just realised Tom had been in a light sleep for god knows how long they’d been in that chair. It did seem a bit unlikely, being able to fall asleep as you were dabbed, prodded and brushed. 

“Maybe you should try though Y/n… your purple eye bags are proving a struggle even for me” Ellie quipped back, now it was Y/n’s turn to give the stern look. Tom took the explain though, shutting her off from whatever kindly meant insult she was about to throw back at her friend. 

“No normally never, I just….” He was cut off by an ear splitting yawn, appearing almost powerful enough to crack his jaw - which would be a disaster, for no one should ruin such a beautiful and sharp jaw line. “…uh-sorry. I just think I ended up taking my NyQuil and DayQuil the wrong way round in the madness of yesterday.” Only Tom, the poor kid often seemed to lacking in any form of common sense - even if those closest to him knew just how intellectual and passionate he could be about the right topic. Affectionately, Nelli scalded his idiocy by jokingly swatting his head with a little tut.

“I can’t believe your still standing then! I’m barely alive and I don’t have any sedatives in my system.” It was true, Y/n was at that stage where every part of her body felt ridiculously heavy… eyes included … eyes especially. 

“But I did sleep on the jet back while your stupid self was studying the script!” Tom replied with a pretty inarguable point - at the time he knew her actions were stupid;  when their flight took off at 11 PM he was certain that the most valuable asset to his ability to act in the reshoots today would be sleep - rather than character development. And he’d tried to convince Y/n that briefly, but gave up. She was bloody stubborn when she wanted to be. 

“Stop competing about who has it worse cos I think it’s me and Nell”Ellie announced - making Nelli agree empathically with her coworker, nodding her head as she looked first to Y/n in her chair then back at Tom.

“Yeh because we have to deal with your unusable faces!!”

After much sarcasm thrown back and fourth, the trailer slowly ebbed it’s way back into serenity and peace as both artists focused on their work. Once Nelli was done she excused herself, Tom staying in the chair in favour of studying (more like staring blankly) at the dialogue for this mornings scenes. His pretence didn’t last long though and while Ellie was busy adding the final touches of fake blood to the now almost completely believable gash that she’d crafted on Y/n’s arm - Y/n had her attention focused the opposite way.

At poor little Tom. He looked so childlike, his slightly puffy eyes looked as if they had weights tied to them - they way he was having fight against gravity to flutter his eyes open, before loosing the next second only for the process to repeat as they dragged downwards. The broad muscles of his neck occasionally seemed to occasionally let up a little, letting his head tilt slowly at first until it gathered enough momentum to throw him off balance. The then sudden movement of his head unconsciously pulling itself back in line caused his eyes to bolt open prior to the whole cycle repeating again. All Y/n wanted to do was let him lay down someone, her heart feeling a tug in her chest just seeing him like that. 

Ellie proclaimed her completion of the wound, leaning back to admire her work before looking to get an affirming nod from Y/n. Yet instead, she was too preoccupied gazing at the boy slouched across from them. “Someone seems a little distracted.” Ellie smirked, finally garnering Y/n’s attention, only feeling more and more smug watching a light tint appear on the actors cheeks. 

“I-well-no… we need to go.” Y/n ignored her words as though nothing had happened, instead rushing off the chair to get Tom out the chair and onto the awaiting set. They had places to be.

Honestly when the director, Ed, called for lunch break, it was pretty apparent to be purely as a compassionate gesture to Y/n and Tom. Both of them had tried so hard this morning to fully commit, even so they’d both been almost completely useless. Y/n kept missing cues whilst all Tom’s actions and lines where slow, dragged out and at times completely prompted from someone behind the cameras. 

So when the lunch break was called there was only one thing on Y/n’s mind and what sandwich was available in the mess tent was not it. Still standing on the set next to her fake holdall bag she looked toward Tom, who was pulling himself up to standing from the train station bench - the pace of his movement making him look more like an old man. 

“You good?” His answer was predictable. 

“I’m so fucking shattered”

Tom swore he’d never heard anything sweeter come out of Y/n’s pink lips than her next statement.

“C’mon I know somewhere we can lie down.”

Without any sort of thought Tom blindly agreed, nodding as he took her outstretched hand in his. The gesture in itself brought a fresh wave of comfort to his aching limbs and as his feet stumbled to catchup with her slight head start he leant the majority of his weight into their connected hands. 

Neither would admit it but they were ‘a thing’… whatever the hell that meant. It was clear as day to everyone and anyone that worked closely to the two but neither of them had ever broached the topic with each other. They’d worked on a few films together over the years; each time they got closer and closer to the point any job without the other simply wasn’t as good. It was scary though, especially for two actors in the prime of their careers. If they weren’t working the same film they’d likely be the opposite side of the world to each other most of the time - quality time together would be few and far between, Really their jobs didn’t suit dating at all, yet it would be perhaps easier if one half of it worked a ‘normal’ job. Something with consistency, a regular structure. A level of dependability that neither Y/n nor Tom could offer to the other. 

So it was terrifying, acknowledging the growth in their magnetic attraction to each other. Both were acutely aware that doing that, confronting their feelings, would most likely signal the beginning of the end. 

Although none of this stoped Y/n from returning the gesture, tilting her shoulder into Tom’s left side as they took slow steps through and then out the set building. She steered the two past the hair and makeup trailer and round into a store and extra equipment trailer. Tom tilted his head as she climbed the stairs whilst beckoning for him to follow - it didn’t seem like the most obvious choice. Rolling her eyes, Y/n explained.

“It’s where all the blankets and coats and kept for the raining scenes plusssss no one will disturb us in here.” Again Tom was not in a position to disagree, eyes drooping as his shoulders sagged to the floor. Right now he’d take anything. 

So he climbed up the stairs and shut the door behind him, just as Y/n flipped the light on. She was right, it was well equipped and with an almost mountainous supply of red blankets that normally the crew and extra would all be wrapped up in after the freezing rain scenes with all the ‘waterfall machines’ as Y/n called them. However it was also um…. It was cosy. “Oh I don’t think I realised how small it was” She chuckled lightly, since now the door was closed her back was pressed up against the far wall of cabinets and still her front was mere millimetres from Tom.

“I…I don’t mind… if-if you don’t?”

“I’m too tired to care” She giggled in response, and Tom , now with her seal of approval, immediately started ransacking the piled shelves for all their worth creating a floor carpeted in the pale red of the blankets, in an attempt to make it more cosy. Joining in, it was almost remarkable how quickly their bodies suddenly agreed to move, with the new promise of rest mere moments away. 

Once the trailer was fully drowned, Tom kicked off his costume shoes and threw his jacket off - it haphazardly landing by the doorway. Y/n copied him, leaving her stood up whilst he had the advantaged of already settling down on the floor, her standing and looking down at him.

The space between the two opposing shelving units was not close spacious enough for two people to lie down whilst keeping a respectable level of personal space. Suddenly feeling a wave of awkwardness, Y/n stayed standing, wringing her hands slightly - whilst fairly certain Tom could hear her heart running at 100 mph. 

“You er… gonna stay there or?” Tom, contrary to popular belief, wasn’t a complete idiot - he could see she was suddenly self conscious. He got it too - they’d never crossed this boundary of choosing to cuddle into each other. It had happened once of twice accidentally over there 2 years of knowing each other. Both of those times it was completely accidental, falling asleep watching a movie with a safe distance of space b between the two, only to find hours later their bodies almost completely intwined. Tom would be lying if he said that his heart didnt skip a beat when he had awoken to Y/n’s soft and gently breath fanning into his neck. He’d loved it, but understood that was unconsciously breaking down part of the wall they’d both been the constructors of.

For fear of getting hurt. 

So now, as Y/n awkwardly bent down and lay on her side, he thought it was imperative to make her feel comfortable. Naturally then, his arm slid round her shoulders and pulled her down toward his chest, releasing a little breath as he felt her relax, her legs slowly wrapping round one of his. 

“This okay?” He murmured, now into the crown of her head as she lay half on her side half on his chest. In reply she nodded into him and Tom couldn’t help but grin- unbeknownst to him but Y/n was doing the exact same thing. 

The peace lasted all of 3 seconds until she groaned again.

“What?” Tom enquired as she wriggled out his hold and stood up. Instead of replying though she just leant over and flicked the one harsh light bulb off making Tom chuckle as she fumbled her way back onto the padded floor in the darkness, earning a few grunts from both as she accidentally kicked Tom’s thighs or banged her head on one of the now empty shelves. Fumbling her way back into a comfortable position, occasionally cursing when she stubbed her toe- or Tom did when she accidentally elbowed him in the ribs. 

“Comfy?” Tom asked a little sarkily as he squeezed her a little more into his side.

“Mhmmmm… I’m gonna sleep for 100 years”

“Yeh me… me too”

And with that they both almost instantly and in complete unison sagged into each other and the blankets - the pent up stress and tension of the past few days ebbing away.

What the pair had neglected to remember was that sleeping for 100 years wasn’t really an option. The whole crew of 50 people, who wanted to restart filming after 45 minutes, had not been told about Y/n’s little hiding place. The pair were so completely safe in their own little cocoon of comfort they were completely oblivious to their teams calling there names more and more frantically. Completely oblivious to the game of hide and seek the situation had descended into, completely oblivious to Harrys natural annoyance as the director asked him for the whereabouts of the two stars - as though Harry was childminder to the pair of them.

It was Nelli who found them first. She’d and Ellie and Tom’s manager had all been recruited by Harry as part of the man hunt. Both girls, having seen first hand the state of the two this morning, were fairly certain they’d both crashed out somewhere. So Nelli, already with a sneaking suspicion, opened the door gently, her figure blocking the majority of the light from seeping through to the dimly lit inside. The sight she was met with had her actually pouting at the cuteness - and yes its a cringey word but also the only one appropriate.

Between bedding down and barely an hour later the two had managed to become impossibly tighter pressed to each other. Y/n’s face was pressed into the crook of Tom’s neck and his arms seemed to have pulled her on-top of him almost completely. Her left leg was hooked under his right, which was then sandwiched by his left too. They both looked so pure and innocent and god did Nelli know they both needed any extra time they could get.

Nelli cared a lot about Tom, she’d been working with him from the beginning, from the child star days to now. She cared about him like her very annoying surrogate son and she wanted to see him looked after. She also so completely wanted the two stars to stop pining after each other. Because frankly it was getting a little frustrating for everyone else. 

So she chose to tactically forget about her discovery, sneaking a photo on the sly before silently pulling the door closed and leaving them to their sleep.

Last night was a Late night for Kent. So late you weren’t even sure if he returned. Reaching over too touch his bare chest knowing in the summer Clark Always wore bare minimum in the hot Kanas Summer nights. You expected too feel his Hard peck too feel his heart beat fast and steady but your hand touched nothing. Just feeling the smooth sheets of the bed. Patting your hand around hoping too find him somewhere on the bed but with No luck you opened your eyes noticing he’ side was still made. You sighed heavily Great. Getting up seeing it was still early the Sun hasn’t even arisen as you walked out wearing your short “silk” aka fake Silk Robe. You were a sucker for a good deal and the original Robe you wanted was 200 dollars. This one that looked identical was only $20. It was a small victory plus knowing how you and Clark get. Your wardrobe is often in the crossfire for your passionate nights. So you always buy cheap. Cause when Clark rips them off you you don’t feel too bad. Getting downstairs the old farm house floorboards creaked as you walked softly downstairs.

The wallpaper was showing its age as it was yellowing as you realized that had too be put on the list too be fixed. Those you weren’t looking forward too Stripping wallpaper off the wall. Hearing the crickets and the early birds chirping away. You walked downstairs thinking maybe Clark just slept on the sofa. But No luck. Walking too the kitchen seeing nothing. The note you left for Clark in your regular spot where you always leave notes Right on the fridge door right up high on the freezer So Clark could see it. Seeing it was still in place you realized He didn’t see it yet. He always takes it down and most times leaves his own note back. Mainly “thanks Love” Or sometimes when he’s feeling extra spicy “wish my dinner was you’ since most of your notes just said your dinner is in the fridge or microwave.but today your note was on the fridge. “Babe! I had a Drumstick for dinner It was too hot for anything else.”

It wasn’t like clark too be out All night. Then your phone Dinged. You walked over too the charging spot. You use too keep your phone upstairs but lately you been spiraling down the YouTube hole and when you kept staying up super late and then being Grumpy. Clark begged for you too try a month with the phone being charged downstairs. You grumpily agreed mainly because you do Love going too bed early. Early bed was your jam. And your phone kept you awake and Clark didn’t enjoy dealing with a grumpy you in the morning. Reaching over too the phone seeing it was Clark.

Clark: I’m outside. On the front deck.

A small tiny smile crept on your face. Even if you tried you could Never sneak up on Clark Kent. Walking out the front door Turning too see Him sitting on a wooden chair looking out at the open field. “Hey did I wake you?” He asked he was still wearing his suit as you walked over sitting on his lap as his hands instantly wrapped around you.

“Kind of.. I reached for you and you weren’t there. I got worried.” A small grin crept on his face. Clark loved t hat you worried. He always finds your simple actions like that endearingly wonderful. Clark knew for experience that you were fiercely protect of him and the people you love. But seeing you trying too protect the man of steal.always made his heart skip. Then he got even more protective. It was a cycle but over the years you both learned too accept it. You protect Clark Kent. And Superman protects you.

“Sorry it was a rough night.” Your face frowned reaching over wrapping your hands softly around his neck as your fingers played with the hair on the nape of the neck. “What happened?”

“A Car Flew into the top level of a building in Tokyo. Some people were hurt but their fine now. I had a close call with a kid..”

Your head naturally titled as you spoke, “A Car.. Flew into the top level of a building? Was it a tall building?”

He nodded his head, “over 100 levels.”

“How the hell did that happen?”

He shook his head, “looks like a flying car.”

“Oh God..” you gasped shaking your head, “that’s the last thing Humanity needs! Flying cars!” He chuckled as you smiled softly as Clark reached up squeezing your leg. As he spoke “Are you sure that you’re possible? For someone who is addicted too their phone you Hate technology?” Chuckling as you wiggled snuggling into him wrapping your arms around him holding him as you looked out too the field seeing the Sun slowly raising as you smiled weakly.

“People can’t even drive properly with roads! Imagine how much more work they will be without any roads and Free-range in the sky!’

Clark chuckled kissing your head as you spoke, “I’ll Only accept Technology when they create robots like in I Robots.”

Clark shifted as he looked at your face as you looked up as he spoke, ‘the Robots tried taking over the entire world in that movie.”

“well before they had the upgrade they were helpful and did the chores. I would Kill too never have too make dinner again.. or the dishes.. Mainly dishes.” He chuckled as you laughed as he spoke, “you would Risk death just so you don’t have too do dishes?’

“If the Robot gets out of line I’m sure Superman could swoosh down and destroy it.” Clark smile grew larger as he kissed your temple. Pulling away he squeezed you slightly tighter .as we both watched the sun raise.

“How did I end up with a dork who is a bigger dork then me?” Chuckling you shook your head, ‘I don’t know what you mean. You’re the bigger dork.”

Laughter broke out between the two fo you as you smiled kissing his chest. “I’m glade I woke up this sunrise is. Beautiful.”

The sky was breaking Thur with a bright orange and Pink as you felt the warmth coming already from the sun. The field was full this year. The wheat was still green but it looked healthy. Listening too the world awake as you both watched the sun raise as he spoke, “what you have for dinner last night?”

“A drum stick.”

“that isn’t healthy.”

Pinching his abs he gasped saying ow. “It was Hot Clark I wasn’t going too cook in that heat.”

“Do you have anywhere too go this morning?”

Shaking your head Clark shifted you up and gently turned you too face him. Seeing his chiseled chin and seeing his eyes darkening you smiled, recognizing that look from your love. You smiled as you shook your head, “Nope I have No plans at all today.” He smiled brightly reaching up kissing your lips softly. It was barely a brush against your lips as he smiled. Smiling back he reached down kissing your neck as you smiled weakly as rubbing his arm as he reached up finding your lips again.

“do you want too go up?”

“up back too bed?” You asked innocently knowing exactly Where He wanted too Go. Pass Bed. And high. Clark had it in his mind a few months ago. Having sex in the air would be thrilling. You agreed. Because you were all for spicing up your sex life. But Once in the air. Being on his shoulder as he was kissing your inner thigh. Clark lost focus of Flying and you both fell own a few meters. And after that you refused too try again. Because you didn’t want too Die with your pants down! Clark agreed but always tried too tease you and tempt you back up in the sky for some cloud Nine fun. You kissed him back as you spoke, ‘or right here.” He chuckled as he kissed you back holding your face tightly as he smiled, “okay love.”

shifting around tooo face him you cupped his face kissing him as he groaned. It wasn’t. A sexy groan more like in pain. You pulled back as he sighed heavily leaning his head backwards as you noticed near the collar of his suit was a bruise. Lifting the collar too show it as you gasped, ‘what the hell?”

he sighed heavily as he spoke, “It was more then just a rescue.. I had a mishap in Japan.”

Reaching down grabbing the hem of the shirt undoing it seeing his entire torso covered in bruise. “What the hell they attacked you with?”

“Large Diamonds.”

“shut up really?” Clark nodded his head as you reached over kissing him, “we need too get you some Ice!”

Clark sighed agreeing as you kissed him softly getting up and draggin your love into the kitchen.

yo! i really wanna get into sonic the hedgehog, do you have any advice on where the best place to start is?

YESSS I'm so happy to help! Keep in mind though I've also only been in the fandom for about a month now, so I don't know like. Everything about it, but I do have some recommendations!

I started with the movies, and I definitely think they're a good place to begin with. Sonic 2 just released digitally on Paramount Plus, which has Sonic 1 as well, but you can also definitely pirate both if you don't have that service and have already used a free trial lmao

For the games, if you're unable to play them (like me) or just don't really want to, people make cutscene movies of them on youtube! They can help you understand all the lore of the game without having to watch a full playthrough. The games I would say are important to know the lore of for the sake of understanding a lot of the fan content is sonic adventure 1 & 2 (especially 2) and sonic unleashed. Still probably read summaries of the other games' plots, though (the wiki is super helpful for that), those are just the ones I think would help you navigate fan content best. Also, Sonic 2006 is a great one, just because it's a comically bad game and fun to watch.

For shows and comics, the older shows (Sonic the Hedgehog, aka SatAM, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog aka AoSTH, and Sonic Underground) can be fun, but SatAM and Sonic Underground are definitely more just fun and episodic, as opposed the the very action-adventurey AoSTH. There's also Sonic X, which is a plot-heavy Sonic anime that I've heard is good, and Sonic Boom, which is the most recent and essentially just a sitcom. It's definitely funny, but there's no real stakes or plot. As for Sonic comics, I honestly can't say much about them b/c I don't know too much about them, I just know apparently the IDW Sonic Comics are really great.

The last general thing I'd recommend is reading the backstories/bios of characters you don't know much about, since there are a whole lot of characters and it would take a pretty long time to watch cutscene movies of every game to get a full idea of who everyone is.

Sorry, I know this is pretty long, there's just a LOT of Sonic content out there. At the moment the movies are probably the best place to start just because the release of Sonic 2 means there's a ton of fan content for them being produced right now. I hope this helps!
