[LEGACY] Acorn Assault: Rodent Revolution
#DoubtfulPlayer #Sunday legacy upload. Today's #GameReview is #AcornAssault #RodentRevolution by @HighTaleStudios & @plugindigital. A [#tag] game, released on #Steam. The #repost of this #review is available now on our website.
Acorn Assault: Rodent Revolution is where Plants Vs Zombies meets a Match 3 game. There is not really a lot to complain about the game, despite the number of cons I will inevitably put at the end of this review. Most of them are because the game is a little price-y for only having 25 pretty short levels, which I’m sure scale in difficulty. It’s more or less nitpicking after the whole price check…

Week In Review - 3/19/23
#JakeReviewsItch Week In Review Archives
This week's reviews:
🧡🧡🧡🤍🤍 Amethyst Hearth 🧡🧡🤍🤍🤍 An Airport Game 🧡🧡🤍🤍🤍 An American Werewolf In LA 🧡🤍🤍🤍🤍 An Outcry, prologue 🧡🧡🧡🧡🤍 Anarcute 🧡🧡🧡🤍🤍 And All Would Cry Beware! 🧡🧡🤍🤍🤍 And Yet It Moves
It's Mario Time! This week, we're talking about Mushroom Kingdom lore, then getting serious about the man himself. No, not Mario....
Game of the Week
Who in here tryna start a riot?
Tumblr media
I came dangerously close to rating Anarcute 3/5, maybe even 2/5. Before publishing my effusive 4/5 review, I wrote and deleted another draft that focused entirely on the game's controller issues. I love this game, and I could not play it. I hacked together a control scheme that kiiiiind of worked, but it never felt right, and I couldn't deny the truth: more of my attention was going toward that stress than was going to the game itself. Technical problems were ruining my experience, and my score had to reflect that. Win+Alt+R is the keyboard shortcut I use to capture game clips. I thought that if I were going to make this a single-issue review, I better record the "Best with a controller!" splash screen that appears every time the game is launched. This is how I discovered that holding Alt while the game is starting brings up a configuration tool. I mapped the game's commands to my controller, and... It worked. Just like that, my biggest problem wasn't a problem anymore. Anarcute is the best game of this week, the third-best game I've rated to date, and potentially unplayable if my solution doesn't work for you. Take that recommendation however you like. I haven't tried any of the console versions, but I'm certain that's the safest bet.
The Mushroom Kingdom
Princess Peach (Ms. Toadstool, if you're nasty) is the sole ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom. We accept this because we have no reason to dig deeper. I think most of us question it at some point, but we understand the Mario series. Princesses get kidnapped and rescued in fairy tales, so there you go, kids: A princess got kidnapped. She needs Mario to rescue her. There's your motivation. She wasn't meant to be a character who inhabits a world. She was a plot device waiting at the end of a series of digital obstacle courses.
Tumblr media
There are nerds inside and outside of Nintendo who have convinced themselves that the Zelda series is somehow improved by pretending it tells coherent story. These are the same dorks who want you to believe that Mario Galaxy is the best one because "actually, the storybook stuff is really deep." Look, Super Mario Sunshine's cutscenes are high art, but Mario has never needed narrative drama. He's a funny cartoon guy who turns any situation into a fun cartoon. Is he political? Absolutely. Everyone and everything is political, but that doesn't mean we need to understand the legislative systems that govern his adoptive home.
The Mushroom King
In 1993, John Leguizamo taught us to trust the fungus.
youtube
What you might not remember, if you aren't a cinephile, is that the fungus is, in fact, Princess Daisy's father, the king.
More obscure than that is Nintendo Comics System's Super Mario Bros. series, from 1990. Check out this character from the first panel:
Tumblr media
You are looking at none other than Princess Toadstool's dad, the King of the Mushroom Kingdom. And he doesn't just get transformed into fungus or something. He's a lead character!
Tumblr media
Nintendo's attitude towrd Mario media is very different now from what it was in the '90s, but I've been paying attention to the marketing for this new Mario movie. I heard the Super Mario Bros. Super Show! song (and the original Toadstool's voice!) in that commercial. I heard that Luma giggle about "the sweet relief of death." The script was written by Matthew Fogel.
I don't think Nintendo would shoot down any attempt to put a king on-screen, but I guarantee we're getting jokes about how weird it is that this kingdom only has a princess. If I'm wrong about this, I'll... I'll...
Tumblr media
Yeah! And just because I don't know when I'll have another excuse to talk about these comics, I leave you with the Raddest, Baddest Princess...
Tumblr media
...and maybe the first official depiction of Baby Mario.

Hey all, MatPat made a video on TADC, so I think it’s time to give a quick refresher on what a terrible person he is, so it doesn’t turn into his second FNaF-Cashcow for theories.
Tumblr media
We all know how scummy of a person he is, with doxxing, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, and more.
Tumblr media
Not to mention his recent video where he talks about the hate towards his FNaF theories, where he spends the majority of the video explaining how him and his staff are smarter than the majority of the population due to a personality test that his staff has all taken.
youtube
He then ends the video by taking around 10 minutes to promote their new merch, and ties the merch plug-in into the main point of the video, trying to guilt the audience into giving him more money.
He’s not some “funny theorist man”, he’s a horrible, bigoted scumbag who doesn’t seem to care that his words have an impact on the world and actual, real life people.
So yeah. This was a post detailing the horrible actions of this man, and I hope it serves as a reminder of what a horrible type of person he is. Do not support his content, especially not now when he’s jumping ship from one fandom that hates him, and going to a new fandom thats getting more mainstream.

Hola! 🤍

Anarcute
by Plug In Digital (Anarteam)
Price (US): $14.99
Included In: Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality
Genre: Action, Adventure
Pitch: Cute anarchy. Adorable animals rise up against robo-fascists, throwing anything they can lift at cops, toppling buildings, and smashing the state any way they can in the name of liberation. Your power is the group's power. You control not one character, but an entire mob, kind of like Pikmin or The Wonderful 101, but not really. It's its own thing, with short, action-packed levels that are meant to be replayed to get better speed and efficiency ratings.
My expectations: Played it. Loved it. But if I have to play a little more for this review, I guess I will...
Review:
Tumblr media
Let’s start with the bad: Aracute has major controller issues on PC. Known, widespread problems.
Tumblr media
I quickly remembered that they’re the reason I quit playing this game. After literally hours of trying every conceivable solution, I discovered (entirely by accident!) that holding the Alt key while launching the application (or immediately after, depending on your launch method) brings up the Unity configuration tool, which fixed my problems. My advice: Play Anarcute on console.
Tumblr media
Because PC-specific issues aside, this game is a delight. There’s a primal, Katamari thrill to seeing the mob of cute, li’l critters grow larger and more capable of toppling fascism. Alone, we are weak. Together, we drop buildings on cops and throw cars at their helicopters.
Tumblr media
It plays almost like a hybrid brawler/strategy strategy game. The mass of animals rolls and attacks like a single character. Charging headlong into battle without a plan is a viable approach if you simply want to reach the end of each stage, but the real fun is in mastery. S-ranks are reserved for those who learn the level. Each mission has been carefully crafted so that all enemies can be defeated with minimal losses in two or three minutes.
Tumblr media
+ A physics-y, strategic brawler thing! Familiar and unique, all at once, it's a joy simply to tear this stupid city down. + Cute, cute, cute! And anarchy! At the same time! It's not some fake-out, Happy Tree Friends thing. It's anarchy, and it is very, very cute. In a just world, Anarcute toys would be everywhere. In our wicked world, I can't even find knock-offs on Etsy. + Score chasing that's actually fun and highlights just how much thought went into each level's design. Scores are given for mob size, enemies defeated and time. Get an S in any two, and you get an S for the level, no matter how bad the other score is. I love that. + A soundtrack that sounds like someone took The Go! Team and made it cuter.
– Awful, awful controller issues. – Controlling a mob is hard. Obviously. But it would be nice if my guys didn't keep bumping into the deadly lasers. I need healthy rioters! – Some of the special moves are a little finicky. By the time I'm ready to stomp, I don't need it, or it happens so quickly that I waste it trying to dodge an attack
🧡🧡🧡🧡🤍 Bottom Line: PC isn't an ideal way to play Anarcute, but the game is such a joyful mix of fresh ideas, familiar ideas, strategic planning, anarchic action, and cuteness that I was willing to waste half my day trying to make it work. There's something here for everybody. Play it on a console if you can.
