today we start reading part two of lockwood and co’s the screaming staircase!!!
to celebrate here are some noteworthy moments from part one! [beware of spoilers!!]
there is a lot of incredible world building in this first part, but one of the bits i keep thinking of is how much these kids not only think about death, but are quite literally surrounded by it. they are constantly being informed by death around them. this is heavy emotionally intense labor that we’re expecting out of these kids
lockwood is a Silly, and he loves teasing lucy this is incredibly important information to me thank you for sharing this jonathan stroud
again with the world building, kind of crazy how pervasive the problem is that you see preventative measures in everything. we had a fun discussion about this in the discord too
okay lucy tell me how you really feel - but also the way his warmth for her is described (even when she is incredibly clueless) is so sweet to see. like talk about a crazy quote
this is an incredible closing scene like HELLOOOOO??? i’m obsessed with the dramatics like this would’ve had me HOOKED as a kid!!
these are just some of the moments that really stood out to me while reading (i had several more too but just to not make this post a million years long ya know) - i’d love to hear other ppls top moments from part one. but also YAY PART TWO HERE WE COMEEEE!!
-
i’m reading Lockwood and Co as part of a book club. this week we read part two of The Screaming Staircase! you can join the discord here, or post on tumblr w/ the hashtag lockwood library to join in!
#lockwood and co#save lockwood and co#lockwood library#the screaming staircase#anthony lockwood#lucy carlyle#george karim#george cubbins#read lockwood and co#lockwood and co books#id in alt text#lmk if i should do my alt text differently I tried to encapsulate everything important without making it a million years long#pls join in the reading challenge even if you're starting late that's why we got that catch up week we're just here for fun times!!#and losing our minds over these characters and their relationships and also this cool incredible world jonathan stroud made#jonathan stroud

What are your da world states like? I love hearing about what other people have done!
I'm going to put this under a read more because it's a lot. I love to ramble and you have opened a can of worms.
I have one world state finished and a second one that I'm currently working on (Just got to Skyhold in DAI). I won't lie, world states A and B are pretty similar in choices. I've planned ahead for 7 total though, and the other ones branch out a lot more with different decision.
My first full play through I didn't save as a world state. I also do have a video game blog if anyone is interested @everyonebl00ms . It's mostly just me reblogging stuff but I do occasionally talk about my own play throughs and OCs and fan fic and such.
I am resisting the urge to list out every single decision I made for each world state so I will just give you some of the more major things.
Lila convinced Alistair to do the dark ritual and they remained Wardens together. Alistair killed Loghain in a duel. All her companions were alive and well at the end of the game.
Elena supported mages every chance she got. She brought Carver into the deep roads and he became a Warden. She killed the Arishok in a duel. She romanced Anders and supported his decision wholeheartedly, so obviously she sided with the mages at the end.
Katari (pls look at her. she's so hot.) allied with the mages. She reconciled Briala and Celene, left Hakwe in the fade, did not exile the wardens, let Morrigan drink from the well, and Leliana became divine. She romanced Blackwall and when she freed him from prison she promised him to the Wardens. In Trespasser she disbands the Inquisition and vows to stop Solas no matter what.
World State B is very, very similar. what can I say, I like what I like.
Darvas romanced Morrigan but he refused to do the dark ritual. Alistair ended up dying killing the archdemon. Darvas executed Loghain. All companions besides Alistair lived to see the end of the game.
Moira Hawke romanced Isabela. She supported mages whenever she could. Bethany stayed home from the deep roads and became a circle mage. She killed the Arishok in a duel. She understood and could have even supported Anders actions at the chantry. However, by involving Moira in this he put Bethany in danger. She killed him in hopes that it would help protect Bethany.
And Elgaris Lavellan is who I'm playing as right now. She's allied with the mages. She will be romancing Solas and drinking from the well of sorrows. She's going to leave Stroud in the fade and won't be exiling the wardens. I can't make up my mind what her decision will be regarding Orlais' ruler. Either Briala ruling through Gaspard or maybe the public truce? Also she will be redeeming Solas bc she luvs him xoxo
#i'm excited to play as my Aeducan bc she is a spoiled brat and will be making bad / selfish decisions#also world state C will have Borrec Cadash who will conscript the templars which will be fun#DA2 is going to be the hardest for me to make different choices with#ask#not pets#sorry for how long this is but i love OCs#i love planning. i love spread sheets#i have multiple dragon age spreadsheets in google drive just to plan / track my world states

Part 2 of my yearly wrapup! My favorite 15 book series this year :
1. Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan - you have no idea how weird it feels to be technically the same age as / a bit older than Percy in the most recently published book from PJO after looking up to him sort of like to a big brother figure for so long. Also Percabeth my beloved !! First ship I ever shipped when I didn’t even know what shipping meant I just knew they were meant to be. Also ily Grover the whole time I was watching the TV show I was like damn I’m the Grover in my friend group 😂
2. Lockwood & Co by Jonathan Stroud - go read it if you haven’t yet! If you love PJO you’ll love this series. I’m already considering rereading the books and I finished reading them barely a month ago. And the world is so interesting too!
3. A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder trilogy by Holly Jackson - if ever there is an apocalypse I want Pippa Fitz-Amobi on my team because this girl is a badass genius. This book series made me want to read wayyy more murder mysteries so if you know any good YA murder mysteries with some of my other favorite tropes like found family pls comment!!
4. The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare - I reread them this year and this time I liked the second half way more than the first half (bc Sizzy and also shipping Clace was less icky)
5. The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare - I really want to do a reread either at the end of this year or in 2025. Herongraystairs have a hold on me that I could not break if I tried, and I’ve rarely seen any fictional character or real person love anyone the way those three love each other. They break my heart and the fact that Jem and Tessa will see Will again in TWP keeps me up at night because WHAT DO YOU MEAN?? As in the Will from their universe, their Will or one from an alternate universe? Bc alternate universe Will isn’t the same. CC already confirmed it wasn’t a dream but pls no alternate universe Will it just won’t be the same.
6. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins - I reread the series this year and read the Peeta POV fanfics of the book series from ao3 (the Peeta’s Games series on Archive of Our Own by igsygrace if you’re interested) and I am so mad that people don’t take YA seriously JUST because there’s also a romance or just because the target audience is teenagers or teen girls when this masterpiece exists.
7. Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo - I read the Grishaverse books last year and this year I read some SoC short fanfics. I love these characters and I love the world Leigh Bardugo built to house them. Why does Netflix keep cancelling book adaptation TV shows I love ? Praying it doesn’t happen to AGGGTM like pls just this once.
8. The Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan - I miss these characters and I really want to reread HoO soon. Something I’ve really wanted to either read or if it doesn’t exist yet write is Jason and Reyna’s quests and life at Camp Jupiter sort of like PJO (Camp Jupiter’s Version) because I love them so much (not as a couple but as friends and as individual characters) and it’s a shame Rick Riordan hasn’t written either a book about them or about the Amazons or the Hunters of Artemis or the Ramirez-Arellano sisters like?? Cmon
9. Heartstopper by Alice Oseman - I reread Heartstopper this year before reading Heartstopper 5 and watching the third season of Heartstopper and it’s such a heartwarming lovely graphic novel series. The whole time I was reading or watching Nick and Charlie fall in love I just wished that could be me. The Imogen storyline in the latest season >>>>>
10. The Eldest Curses by Cassandra Clare - I reread Red Scrolls of Magic while rereading TMI and it’s one of my favorite TSC books because it’s my comfort read and I enjoy reading it so so much. I definitely need to reread Lost Book of the White sometime, it’s been a while and I don’t remember much about it other than the fact that it takes place in Shanghai and the whole TMI friend group AND Jem are there (which can only be iconic).
11. The Last Hours by Cassandra Clare - I just love this book series so much!!
12. The Wicked Powers by Cassandra Clare - not even out yet but I’m half-excited half-terrified about this series. It feels surreal that the Shadowhunter Chronicles are going to end 😢 I love these characters so much and the world is so fascinating I hope the fandom keeps expanding on it even after TWP is done. There’s so much left to explore, especially with the immortal characters like Lily Chen, Catarina Loss, Raphael Santiago, Ragnor Fell, or even Tessa!!
14. Harry Potter series - putting this here bc of the fact that I’m in the Marauders fandom and I really SHOULD get back to posting chapters for that fic I’ve been writing for a year now (I apologize)
15. the Seraphina & Tess of the Road duologies by Rachel Hartman - someone gifted me Tess of the Road as a birthday present when I was 10-12 I don’t remember and when I first read it then, I was too young to understand some of the more mature themes of that book. But when I reread it recently I was better equipped to and it just hit me how amazing this book is. I also really loved the Seraphina duology. (In The Serpent’s Wake wasn’t quite as good but I still liked it). If you like complex flawed FMCs who are strong in their own way, fantasy and dragons (and don’t mind if there isn’t a sweeping romance because there isn’t much in this series) you will love these books I couldn’t recommend them more. But check the content warnings for the Tess of the Road duology it’s… let’s say questionable that someone gave me this book at age twelve.
Anyway yeah those were the book series that owned my heart this year! Apart from AGGGTM and Lockwood & Co there weren’t really any new book series that captured my heart this year. Pls recommend some if based on what I’ve written you think I’d enjoy reading something!
#grishaverse#lockwood and co#heartstopper#the hunger games#the shadowhunter chronicles#tsc#percy jackson#riordanverse#fantasy#young adult books#i love books#a good girls guide to murder#marauders#six of crows

For the WIP ask meme (tysm for the tag), you had me at 'political drama.txt' but I'm also very curious about 'gruffgriff' and Hawke rising from the trash??? Any of those, any combination, or whatever you feel like sharing I will be on like pigeons swarming half a discarded sandwich, pls and thank.
that's really kind of you to say so! 'political drama' is the vaguuuest. there's a lot of arranged marriage fics in fandom and i wanted one that fully leant into the court intrigue angle rather than the romance angle.
i love a particular genre of story that's like, an outsider comes into a poisonous and decadent court and struggles to rise to the top in the hope of reform it/sabotaging it from within against overwhelming odds while also struggling to hold onto their idealism and sense of right vs wrong amidst the scheming and the murdering. at the same time, people are getting dicked down.
this particular .txt is just vague outlines for a proposed series of stories covering the Intrigue, the cyber equivalent of a napkin at a bar with SOTRY: fuckingggggg written on it after a few glasses of your bev of choice. I STILL WANT A COURT INTRIGUE FIC but i have accepted that i would be writing it for an audience of like, five, because people on the whole read arranged marriages for the will they/won't they romance not the actual experience of government, which is a toss up between sausage factory gristle & gore and simultaneously armando iannucci death-of-stalin farce with grown men bickering about the symbolic arrangement of funereal flowers. :sob:
the thing about it was, it had been fun. he had been young and he had been in love and he had wanted, genuinely, to try and change the nature of the fire nation government - to dig deep into the depths of its machinery, pull apart its pistons and boilers and hissing steam valves, its ambition and appetites and pride - but he was a smart man, and at the end of the day, he had been pitting his mind against other smart people, and it had been fun. until (spoiler thing) had happened, and people had died.
"hawke rising from the trash" is one of the published ones! it turned into "a toast to distant friends", a story about varric + hawke's shitty gift choices.
as for gruffgriff, i signed up to a fenris & anders focused big bang a few years ago, somehow failing to realise this was a stupid idea when i don't care much for fenders and that was what a specifically fenris + anders big bang was inevitably gonna feature heavily, and was assigned a pic of the two of them on a gryphon. i took like six different attempts to start a story before giving up and withdrawing from the big bang (mikke wrote a much better story for the same prompt anyway so the artist wasn't left bereft). with this one i think the idea was to have anders having never left the wardens and then for fenris to enter the story in carver's place, having contracted the taint on the deep roads expedition? i kept the opening because i thought it could be used for something else but [laughs bitterly in writer's block].
The cavernous mess hall of the Warden base in the Anderfels could seat, with comfort, almost a thousand people if pressed. Here, within its sandstone walls and under the watchful eye of the First Warden, the Warden-heroes of ages gone had sat and made merry and celebrated victories without counting; had raised toasts to whole legions of the glorious dead before and after battles upon which the fate of Thedas hung; had been filled to the imposing rafters with the sound of an army of men determined to pretend, at least for a little while, that they were not, eventually, functionally, dead men. That the hall currently contained only Anders, Riordan and Stroud was a sad commentary on the state of the Order.

so what is all this stuff about lockwood? I'm curious now /gen feel free to ramble ( also I accidentally unfollowed you sending this ask so I gave you an extra notification sorry)
Hdhshjd, accidentally unfollowing someone is such a mood😭
But anyways, hi!! Ok so Lockwood & Co is a new Netflix show that's an adaptation of one of my favourite book series, Lockwood & Co, written by one of my all time favourite authors, Jonathan Stroud <333
The story setting is basically that around 50 years ago The Problem appeared. The Problem is ghosts, of various power levels and hostility but if any of them touch you, you dead <3 unfortunately, only children can see them and as they transition into adulthood (~18-20) their powers fade until they're gone. The Problem effects everyone but adults can't do anything to fight it. So obviously it's time to throw child labour laws out the window! Though they still get adult supervision, not that it helps much. The Problem seems to only effect Britain, it's never really elaborated on or mentioned but this makes the most sense in story and I think that's hilarious.
The story centres on our protagonist, Lucy Carlyle, a no nonsense agent (ghost hunter) from the country who has run off to London after an Incident with her previous employer. Unable to find employment in any other agency, she stumbles upon a small company that's willing to take her in. The company, Lockwood & Co, is only run by two people, both of whom are Lucys age (~14-16) and very much not adults, but hey, who needs a childhood anyway?
The other members of L&C are the mysterious, stylish, kinda self centred owner deeply in need of a therapist, Anthony Lockwood, and his friend/employee the intially off putting brain of the group who is SO autism, George Karim (also known George Cubbins in the book, but the show decided to make him Iranian because honestly the books are. Very very white)
Together they try not to fall into debt, get killed on the job, get arrested for malpractice, and uncover a government conspiracy! Also there's a talking skull in there. He's a creep and I love him.
The show is an amazing adaptation of the book, keeping most of the good parts and improving others. It's a very sweet found family while also being an awesome and atmospheric supernatural mystery show. Also has the great message of Hey. Child Labour Is Kinda Bad
If you end up checking it out pls feel free to dm me so we can chat about it <33

Im supposed to be studying for my exams but the course im currently studying sucks so im going to make this fun my doing my end of the year annual wrap-up every once in a while. I used to do them on Google Docs for the last few years, I do a ranking from a few categories like top songs, top singers, top books top book series top ships etc.
I do this so I can look back at what I liked that specific year and to keep track of how my taste evolved and what fandoms I joined etc. And since I just joined tumblr it’s a great way for you to get to know me!
Favorite authors :
1- Cassandra Clare - one of the best moments of this year for me was meeting her for the first time, I completely lost my mind and it made my day, I love the Shadowhunter Chronicles so so much
2- Rick Riordan - I have loved the Riordanverse books ever since I started reading PJO at age 10 (8 years ago now wow) and it made me so emotional to watch the PJO TV series last December, then to read The Chalice of the Gods right before summer (I know I was very late but I was insanely busy trying to get into university just like Percy) it felt like I got to grow up with the characters and yeah just love the Riordanverse so much. If I could be anywhere right now I would be in Camp Half-Blood.
3- Alice Oseman - I still haven’t read all her books yet but I loved reading Loveless (as someone currently in their first year of uni AND in the process of figuring out if I’m aroace or not) and don’t even get me started on how much I love the Heartstopper comics and the show. I’m planning on rereading Solitaire sometime soon and on reading Alice’s other books. LGBTQ+ representation is so so important and I will die on this hill, it’s amazing that Heartstopper has become so mainstream and showcases so many LGBTQ+ characters and storylines.
4- Suzanne Collins - I recently reread the Hunger Games and it’s insane how many people are writing essays or filming video essays about these books and movies even now, because what she’s written is still relevant to this day. All the characters are important, every detail is essential and adds so much to the story. It’s awe-inspiring how thought-through and profound everything is, and I am looking forward to reading HG5 !
i honestly don’t really have “favorite authors” per se the way i have favorite series or favorite books so umm yeah honorable mentions are
5- Holly Jackson (read AGGGTM trilogy this year and I stayed up reading AGAD until 2am it was exhilarating)
6- Casey McQuiston (The Pairing was so fun!! They write some of my favorite romances)
7- Kristin Cashore (the Graceling Realm series are soo underrated go read them!! Complex flawed FMCs who are all strong in their own way and btw I haven’t read Seasparrow yet it’s been sitting on my shelf for a year now)
8- Roshani Chokshi (loved the Pandava series loved The Gilded Wolves haven’t read the rest yet but I am definitely getting around to it)
9- Holly Black (write a book abt Vivi and Heather and how they got back together after TFOTA and my life is yours!! Also Taryn apologist it’s not the hill I will die on and I get the hate but pls it’s not the most evil thing someone has ever done in these books or ever)
10- Jonathan Stroud - I read Lockwood & Co this year after watching the TV show last year and right after finishing The Empty Grave immediately went back and rewatched the show. Phenomenal series loved the found family ans Netflix cancelling the show was a crime.
