“So you guys do this a lot?” Ellie asked, peering over the expanse of the city with something almost akin to wonder. “Leave the QZ and just like... wander around the city?”

Murphy scoffed, rolling her eyes as she turned to face the teenager, walking backwards to keep pace with Tess and Joel. “Wander around?” she asked. “Sure, we come on leisurely strolls out here all the time. Sometimes we bring a lunch, have a picnic.” 

Ellie blinked, staring at the blonde for a moment. “That was sarcasm right? Are you always so sarcastic?”

“Yes” Joel said without missing a beat. 

Murphy laughed, offering Ellie a playful wink before turning to face the front once more. As she walked she began to rifle through the pocket of her jacket, pulling out a messily rolled cigarette and a lighter. 

“Those things will kill you,” Tess said, shaking her head slightly as the lighter clicked. 

Murphy rolled her eyes. “Tess loves to play this little game,” she told Ellie. “Those things will kill you. I say if the cigarettes kill me before an infected can then the cigarettes will have earned it. I think she’s just jealous that the Fedra guy I get my smokes from won’t give her any and I don’t share.” 

“He gives ‘em to you because he’s sweet on you. I call that an unfair advantage.” Tessa replied with a chuckle. 

Murphy was quiet for a moment, taking the time to take a long drag of her cigarette. “Everyone is sweet on me.” She said finally. “I’m very charming. Right Joel?” 

Her only response was a groan an exasperated shake of the head but it was enough to get Ellie and Murphy laughing. Even Tess was grinning. 

“So,” Murphy continued. “Is that an unfair advantage or am I just playing to my strengths?”
