The worst part about getting into a relatively new visual novel is that there’s barely any content and it sucks. Anyways, here’s your random reminder to go play I Was a Teenage Exocolonist. 

I’ve only gotten three endings so far (Architect, Botanist, and Run Away) and I’m already attached to every character (except for Vace because fuck Vace !). My favorite character rn is probably Cal, he’s so sweet. 

If you like a good old sci-fi visual novel/life sim with space exploration, groundhog day loopholes, and desperately trying to save everyone you love from their impending doom, then this game is great for you.

haven't played teen exo yet but: besk/instance, getting caught in the rain? (sorry if they don’t have normal rain on their space planet...)

There's nothing sweet between them: no sunset picnics, no long walks on the beach, no getting caught in the rain. Just the cold dark vastness of space, just the slowly shrinking metal box they're trapped in together, just Instance's bony fingers cool against her skin. There are moments when Instance kisses her that Besk can close her eyes and pretend--but then she opens them again and remembers, and remembers, and remembers.

it's definitely on par with disco elysium as far as open ended political dialog goes, because it does bring up questions about fascism, eugenics, settler colonialism, mob mentality, domestic abuse, community and education but don't expect it to answer those questions for you; it does expect you to draw your own conclusions and form your own opinions

and the characters and their designs are very charming on top of that of course!!

one of those "don't look up anything before you play it" games but it's got everything. timeloops. card games. cutting exploration of how fascist behavior creeps into society through selling itself as a way to soothe your own anxiety. pollen allergies. really good science fiction worldbuilding. giant centipede dog. play i was a teenage exocolonist. Please.

getting into ace attorney was the worst thing i could’ve done for myself bc yes silly lawyer game but also why is this one of the most wonderfully crafted narratives i’ve ever indulged in

i’ll admit i’m not hard to please in that i give praise generously, but i don’t fall back on extremes unless i’m really into what i’m consuming. shu takumi is a skilled and talented creative; i haven’t felt a game take such great hold over me since i played i was a teenage exocolonist or fe3h.

i have so much to say about ace attorney and my main blog just isn’t the place to endlessly spam so i’ll be writing unedited thoughts here while i process just how good this series is

Officially adding ‘I was a Teenage Exocolonist’ to the games that I’ve gone absolutely feral over. I’ve had it for not even a few days and I’ve poured countless hours. Sleep? I don’t know her. If you’re into Sci-Fi, story rich, LGBTQ+, and stunning art? This is a VN/Deck Builder that you’ll utterly adore. If this play-style isn’t your favorite? Still play it because you might like it. The story itself runs very deep and it’s one of those time-loop games so there’s high replay ability.

Spoiler below the cut about something I’m going crazy over.

Please tell me I’m not the only one just staring at the one CG of Dys from the ‘joined the gardeners’ ending?

The ‘joined the gardeners’ ending was so beautifully bittersweet in my opinion, and I had to force myself to get it because I physically couldn’t bring myself to let Dys set the bomb off. Whether I romance him or not - I always befriend him on every play-through (even though I feel like romancing him enhances the lore tenfold compared to the other characters. Y’know, because he’s kind of like a sweet blend between the game’s main plot. He isn’t a complete pacifist like say Cal, but he isn’t one of the human supremacists at all. My boi respects nature yet also takes what he needs - with the full intention of returning himself to the soil when he passes).

But this art? The colors? The lighting? The accepting smile paired with the slightly glazed-over eyes? Excuse my perversion - but his bicep???

I don’t know. I’ve played so many VNs and I feel like this is the most beautiful CG I have come across in a game. It matches his ‘goodbye’ perfectly - and is just breathtaking.

And also, poor Eddie, lmao. It's very interesting to me, with the inclusion of the Narrator, that the characters seem to be forced to steer in a specific direction, if that makes sense? To upkeep a certain mask. I wonder if 'as above, so below' is a reference to that, in the sense that whatever is dictated by the stronger forces of narrative, is what shall occur 'below'-- In their world. Like, the animosity some of these puppets have for each other!!!!! Some of them are just straight up Not Friends, lmao.

I need to play more of it, but if anyone is reading this, go play I Was A Teenage Exocolonist. I expected it to be waaaay more popular, especially on Tumblr, but it's so underrated? The writing is wonderful, the characters are well-defined, and the art is breathtaking! Please take a look at the trigger warnings, cuz there are a few that are definitely applicable, but it's soooo good... If it has to be said, I romanced Dys first, lmao.

I am watching The Apothecary Diaries right now, just started today, and can I jsut say... I'm such a fan of all the women in this show!! I love the perspective it gives on court life a lot! Maomao definitely is pulling in all the men AND women, huh.... i appreciate that. Jinshi also 100% wants to get degraded by her, huh. Maomao is the sexywoman of this show.

it’s a visual novel/trading card game available on steam (though you have the option to turn off the card game if it’s not your thing.) it’s got everything: cast of characters that’ll make you cry, the joys and griefs of coming of age, romanceable alien boy made of fungal spores, very series of unfortunate events “the adults cannot be trusted here” vibes, coups, plagues, society building, everyone’s queer and a good amount of the characters are poly, a psychedelic colorful alien world that wants to eat you, and most importantly Small Choices That Change Everything. game of the decade!!!! (the full name is “I was a teenage exocolonist” but don’t let the silliness fool you: this game WILL make you gasp & cry. and there are also fart jokes.) you can choose your character’s gender, pronouns and name!

Just finished playing I was a teenage exocolonist. So you know how sometimes you have characters that are written to be awful and are intentionally awful and you really are meant to actually hate them and think they’re awful, well. I don’t condone murder or anything but there were two characters that I really would have liked to kill. With my own two hands. Please. Every time I saw them my hands would just automatically flex. The problem is. This sort of cuts into game enjoyment.

It's very well written and has a lot of meaningful choices along the way. Part Visual novel, part card/puzzle game. Explores a lot of environmentalist themes. Very very good. Do recommend.
