Officially adding ‘I was a Teenage Exocolonist’ to the games that I’ve gone absolutely feral over. I’ve had it for not even a few days and I’ve poured countless hours. Sleep? I don’t know her. If you’re into Sci-Fi, story rich, LGBTQ+, and stunning art? This is a VN/Deck Builder that you’ll utterly adore. If this play-style isn’t your favorite? Still play it because you might like it. The story itself runs very deep and it’s one of those time-loop games so there’s high replay ability.

Spoiler below the cut about something I’m going crazy over.

Please tell me I’m not the only one just staring at the one CG of Dys from the ‘joined the gardeners’ ending?

The ‘joined the gardeners’ ending was so beautifully bittersweet in my opinion, and I had to force myself to get it because I physically couldn’t bring myself to let Dys set the bomb off. Whether I romance him or not - I always befriend him on every play-through (even though I feel like romancing him enhances the lore tenfold compared to the other characters. Y’know, because he’s kind of like a sweet blend between the game’s main plot. He isn’t a complete pacifist like say Cal, but he isn’t one of the human supremacists at all. My boi respects nature yet also takes what he needs - with the full intention of returning himself to the soil when he passes).

But this art? The colors? The lighting? The accepting smile paired with the slightly glazed-over eyes? Excuse my perversion - but his bicep???

I don’t know. I’ve played so many VNs and I feel like this is the most beautiful CG I have come across in a game. It matches his ‘goodbye’ perfectly - and is just breathtaking.

Soooo I just did my second full run of Exocolonist and I am absolutely gutted. I did a pretty normal run, got the novelist ending, and I romanced Rex. And just like the ending said, I was absolutely gutted by what happens. I suspected it could have gone this way, but I assumed if I said I wanted to be exclusive, it would not do something like that (hell maybe it's the opposite and if I said I'd be open, we could at least be causally together in the end).

But after that ending and Dys's ending, I'm starting to wonder if all the romance endings end like this. Because each character has their own agency and especially since I really focused on friendship on multiple people, I can definitely see how each person would get away from you. Marz and Dys can't be tied down, Tang would throw herself into her work, maybe you can be part of Cal and Tammy's thing but I feel like something can go wrong there. Idk about Nomi but from what Ive seen they're aro/ace so maybe they're not even an option. Nem has like a lot of shit that can go wrong. Vace has so many fucking issues (also, is he redeemable in any sense bc I want to like him so bad but the more I learn about him the worse he becomes. I want to help him becaus I understand he's a product of his environment, but between what he did to Rex and what he ends up doing to Nem, its becoming increasingly difficult to enjoy Mr. Well Endowed, which I find absolutely hilarious btw).

It does make me kinda sad that a game that a very queer game really fucks ya on the romance options lmao. Maybe there are ways to have a 'happy ending' with these characters, but they all seem so traumatized that it's really difficult. Though I guess the idea of a happy ending is kinda antithetical to the game. I think they devs are trying to show that these characters are more than romance options and have wants and needs outside of you and from a writing perspective, I love that. Still, I hate that both of my endings have ended in heartbreak. As a gay man, it doesn't leave me feeling to good. Still the game is fantastic.

I am glad that there is an alive I Was a Teenage Exocolonist fandom and am even happier thwr they love Dys as much as I do. I'm going to obsess over this game for months I can tell.

(My question is is there a Dys ending where you spend your whole lives together and not he dies on adventures or leaves you to become a Gardener? I'm happy he's happy but that made my heart acheeeee)
