#please give this attention

so i’ve been getting a lot of asks from people who don’t know about the Great Katya Debate and so I just wanted to clear this up for those who are just getting into the fandom now: Quick context anyone who hasn’t seen Goncharov (watch it!) here’s some context: during the Boat Scene Katya is gravely wounded. She makes it out alive but then later dies of causes that aren’t made explicit in the text. Some people believe she succumbed to the injuries she got on the boat and others have theorized that there was an unrelated cause (an illness she was hiding, offscreen attack etc.). Andrey is with her when she dies, and is the one to tell Goncharov of her death during their final confrontation. This news drives him further down his path of unraveling and ultimately contributes to his eventual demise.

But here’s the thing: some people don’t think she actually died.  There are a number of subtextual clues that imply Katya faked her death in order to find freedom from the mob. The biggest piece of evidence towards this theory is the fruitstand scene where she tries to talk Sofia into running away with her. From what we see in the rest of the film, Katya knows that there’s no way she could walk away from the mob. Her marriage to Goncharov has her so deeply entangled that she’d be tracked down and killed almost immediately. Hell her brother leaves Russia just to find her in Naples within weeks, and he’s not even trying that hard. The most text-aligned read of this scene is that Katya is fantasizing, imagining a future neither she nor Sofia believes in (hence why Sofia brushes her off so casually), but more radical fans think she was hinting at a broader plan -- to fake her death and finally free herself from The Life. There are other hints to this, best found by analysing things like her leitmotif and the way Andrey discusses her death.

Fans of this theory really have fun with it, devising how she might have done it, who might have helped her (a personal favorite of mine is that she got help from icepick joe before he died), and what might have happened after her escape.

However it’s deeply controversial with those die-hard fans who are attached to the text of the film. I’m ultimately more of this camp, because the thematic resonance of Katya’s character arc really gets thrown off if she actually gets away in the end. Other critiques include: her survival damages the film’s credibility as a tragedy, it’s a modern-day/corporate-feminist/’girlbossified’ reduction of a complex and deeply flawed character, it would leave too many plot holes for a Scorcese project, etc. (There are also some other, more bigoted, reasons people don’t like the theory but i don’t endorse that bullshit and therefore won’t be talking about them here)

This got further complicated when Gonchorav ii: Katya’s revenge was recently announced. Where those who believe Katya lived cheered the announcement as absolution, the katya-died fans immediately got up in arms. There have been claims that Scorsese is selling out what was once his magnum opus, and bending to the will of the newer fanbase. Fans were losing their minds on twitter in all directions, but it didn’t get that much press bc it was the same week daddy musk started burning the place down.

Ultimately this is one of those fandom debates that people get seriously worked up about and will run in circles over with seemingly no end. I have my opinion but all the infighting realllly turns me off so I try to stay out of it. It’s also worth noting that most of the Katya-lives camp are younger fans who saw the movie in recent years, while the Katya-dies camp are more likely to be film buffs (the good and the bad) who saw the movie either when they were young or when it released.

On one hand, Young Justice is kind of neglected by the actual superheroes that should be looking out for them in a lot of crucial ways and very much failed by the adults around them

But on the other hand Red Tornado straight up hosts a parent-teacher conference where their respective legal guardians all show up, barring Batman who’s in traffic so Nightwing fills in instead because Robin’s dad does not know he’s a vigilante which is objectively hilarious

💖 Day 3.5 is now available! 💖

For the last couple of months, only Server Boosters had access to the 3.5 update... Buuuuut now it's available for everyone to play in the 14DWY Discord — and soon itch.io once I'm happy with the QA and state of the game — so please don't feel pressured to join unless you want to!!

What's been added to the 3.5 version?

📺 Streamer Mode!

I've been told that it's difficult to stream and monetise age-restricted videos on YouTube and Twitch, so I added an option to remove the sexual content and strong language used in the demo.

Now y'all can invite Ren into your bed for cuddles without putting your streamer career on the line /silly /lh

This won't affect the 18+ rating or dark themes/elements of the game, however! Although Streamer Mode will prevent you from seeing any "gruesome" CGs in the future, most of the core elements of the game will still be tied to the choices and decisions you make. So you won't miss out on the overall experience by using streamer mode!!

⚙️ Custom Pronouns!

It only took me one entire year to get around to it, but you can finally choose your own preferred pronouns (or use a set of pronouns instead)... At the cost of being able to change them mid-game ^^;

Since the original pronoun screen wouldn't update until a new scene was displayed, I temporarily disabled the feature. But once I find a workaround, I'll bring it back!

💗 Choose how others perceive you!

You can now choose how the cast and narration perceive you! Originally, the narration was kept strictly gender-neutral (outside of pronouns and genitalia picked by the player), but this will soon change in future updates.

For more clarity: you don't get to choose the words specifically, but you can choose between masculine, feminine, and androgynous terms!

📋 Separate top and bottom genitalia!

You can now choose your tatas and pps separately! >:3

Alongside that, you can also choose your preferred body type!

I removed the "both" genitalia option because a few players still assumed it was an obscure version of "intersex". That wasn't my intention and I don't want to mislead anyone, so I took it out for now ^^;

I also didn't want to include a screenshot of the new genitalia choices in action (because it's NSFW), so y'all get the same character menu screen for the nth time instead lmao

📱 Relationship Screen Overhaul!

You can now change your own status for more immersion, and long-term Server Boosters will eventually be able to submit and use their own icon within the game as well!

Stalking finding your friends has now become easier by using "Buddy Maps"; a new app that allows you to see the location of all the cast members!

I want to offer players more incentive to check the relationship screen since they tend to miss the status updates, so hopefully this might help ;v;

It also says it "updates every few hours" so folks don't go overboard and check every 5 seconds to see where Ren is gdsghf (also keep in mind that he's a hacker lol)

🖤 Additional Scenes Update!

Day 2 received a brand new CG!!!!! Originally, I planned on only adding a few CGs sporadically throughout the game, but it didn't feel right to leave Day 2 so... empty... so I added a brand new CG to (hopefully) make things feel more balanced and natural!

If you decline Teo's offer on Day 3, Leon will now call and try to convince you to reconsider. However, players are still allowed to decline, and if they do, they'll reach a dead end.

After listening to feedback on itch, I changed some of the dialogue during Days 1-3 to make it seem more consistent! They're only small changes though, so it's honestly not worth looking for sdgjssga

🎶 Updated BGM and SFX!

I wanted to try out a different style of music to see if it fits the vibe of 14DWY more! The BGM features more acoustics to suit the "beachy" theme of Corland Bay, though I made a conscious effort to include piano elements as well to stay true to the original!!

I figured it'd be better to give players a live example before I make a poll (to see if they prefer the change or not) and publish it to Itch.

Some new SFX have also been added, though it's very minimal and honestly not that noticeable.

How to download and play the update?

(warning: clicking on the following links will open Discord!!) To download the Day 3.5 update, simply join the 14DWY Discord server, verify your age, and visit the "14dwy-updates" channel!

Alternatively, you can also wait until the update is publicly released on Itch to play it as well!! (It normally gets released shortly after a round of QA testing/getting feedback from the server, though I may release it earlier if I feel like it hehe ^^)

scout often felt like whatever emotion he felt at a time, he felt it down to his bones. there was no subtle emotion to him. it was as though the switch in his brain could only go either on or off, max speed or a snail’s pace.

he knew he had a motor mouth, but that was only because he had shit to say; all the thoughts in his brain needed to come out and he kinda sucked at spelling so writing it down was a bust. if scout kept every emotion he felt within himself, he feared it would suffocate him under its weight.

when he was a kid, he got away with his big feelings by being the youngest in a family of nine, the baby through and through. as he stood now, he once again finds himself the youngest of nine, still the baby who was either an empty lighter or a forest fire.

scout hated the repetitive nature of his life. he hated his own predictability.

case in point, he sat outside of medic’s infirmary at the ass crack of dawn, and try as he might he could not convince himself to go to bed. all because he was in there. his ass was numb from sitting on the floor. the noises inside had stopped hours ago.

it just wasn’t fair, scout thought to himself. he wasn’t supposed to feel like this towards the man who walked out when he needed him the most. where was the logic in waiting up for good news about your deadbeat father? scout had long ago accepted what had happened, but here were those big feelings that told him to stay put.

it was old news. the scout hadnt needed a dad growing up and just when he thought he had finally convinced himself of that notion, some french asshole came into his life and never had a kind word to say; he was an enemy to scout first, before he was his father. and it took months to not get overwhelmed by anger and the truth of the matter. everyday the spy would sneer scouts way and it was his dad and the spy would make a quip about scouts reading ability and it was his dad and every time he would call him annoying or obnoxious he was still his dad, he would say the words while being his father.

medic was doing repairs on his medigun and before the match had politely asked the team to promise not to get maimed while he was between parts. no medigun meant no quick fixes, it meant long surgery and weeks in recovery.

the spy was shit at keeping promises, scout thought.

suddenly, the door opened and medic stepped out whilst delicately removing his gloves.

“doc!” scout leapt up on wobbly feet. “there ya are!”

the medic was obviously taken aback by the presence of another person. “ah, herr scout. it is rather late, is it not?”

“dunno, theres no clock in the hallway and i dont have a watch on me-”

with his bearings gathered, scout took in the haggard doctors appearance as his jaw clicked shut. blood was splattered on his white coat, haphazardly and carelessly with no direct source. medic had produced a handkerchief from his pocket and was dutifully attempted to scrub the blood off his hands and out from underneath his nails; evidently, his gloves could only shield from so much.

his face was lined with worry and he was obviously exhausted.

it was his father’s blood on medic’s face. he was in there and there was obviously a battle fought between doctor and patient.

“it is nearly 4am,” the medic said. “scout, what are you doing here?”

and wasnt that the question, thought scout. he was wondering the same damn thing himself.

because truly, what business did he have waiting up for spy of all people? what was he hoping to gain, a moment of lucidity from a man high on medication, a spark of realization about their situation? what good was acknowledgement if the circumstances were like this, sterile and forgotten by the time the stitches healed.

scout had sat and stayed, and it was far more than the spy ever did for him.

those big feelings rose back up, and scout stood rooted in righteous fury. “is he gonna make it?”

“could this not have waited until tomorrow?” medic asked. “i still need to disinfect my equipment and write my reports from the match.”

“im sick of waiting,” scout growled. “everyone else can play dumb all they want, but im askin ya to spit it to me straight, doc. is he gonna make it?”

before medic could reply, scout felt his chest constrict as those big feelings swallowed him whole and began to feast. “because its not fuckin fair, alright? i shouldnt care about that asshole after what he did to me, or didnt do for me when i was a kid. i grew up just fine without him and he couldnt give a damn about me so he doesnt deserve my time. i shouldnt be here, i shouldnt care, but i do. and it eats me up inside like im the only person who freakin realizes the situation. thats my dad in there and hes dying and everything tells me i should care about that and i do and i hate myself for it, that jerk didnt do anything for me my whole life, why do i care? why does he get my compassion when he hasnt earned it? i should know better and ive been here all night because my dad is hurt and i cant help him and i hate his guts-“ scout gripped medic by the shoulders and ripped the question out from somewhere deep in his chest, “is my dad gonna die, doc?”

tears ran down scouts red cheeks and he had a wild look in his eye. he looked like a frightened animal that had been cornered and was lashing out in protection; medic considered that comparison to be somewhat accurate.

“the spy will live.” medic chose his words carefully as he pried scouts hands off his shoulders. “the spy will live.”

and with nothing more to say and no answers to the questions, the medic brushed past scout and walked down the hallway.

scout looked at the door leading into the infirmary. he thought about walking in and staying by spys side the entire night, greeting him in the morning and helping him drink water when he couldnt sit up. he thought about what would happen if he became the bigger man and stayed when spy needed him, despite the pain it would cause. he thought about shoving it in spys face that it was easy to be somewhere where youre needed. scout thought about becoming everything spy couldnt be.

scout hated the repetitive nature of his life.
