A Meal to Remember by @iwtvfanevents
Tumblr media
Part 2: I am suddenly Megan Ellison, a wealthy lesbian, my father is a billionaire who has allowed me to start my own production company to make films I want to see. Money is no object. Here are the fics I would adapt and who I would hire (bully into) directing.
1. Reformation by verseau - first of all, I would pay $1 billion to acquire the rights outcompeting Amazon, Netflix and Apple and I would make Betsy adapt the screenplay. I maintain this must be cinematic because Ldpdl’s hole needs to be experienced in 70mm imax AND I would not allow any countries to censor like they did to Florence’s boobs. This would be like an Eternal Sunshine/Blue Valentine/Two for the Road type romantic dramedy that jumps back and forth in time to show the couple’s struggles and progression, and the non-linear storytelling means it automatically becomes an Oscar frontrunner. I would try to hire Barry Jenkins first but he is occupied with The Lion King 2 at Disney so then I would go to Mia Hansen-Love to direct. Beyoncé does the soundtrack. I didn’t even have to ask her she just wanted to.
2. Part of Your World by weathermood - I will imprison Mr. Monsterfucker himself Guillermo Del Toro until he agrees to direct this film like I am Kathy Bates in Misery. He will read it and then be like okay I agree you don’t need to kidnap me I will make this movie. We are going full Avatar 2 level budget to make sure underwater scenes are believable cause I won’t tolerate bad Aquaman CGI. The budget balloons to $400m but that’s okay cause it makes $2.7b worldwide and there’s 2 sequels greenlit immediately cause the world wants to see Louis get pregnant.
3. A Potentiality for Corruption by vampdf - Guillermo is occupied with Part of Your World and its sequels now so I turn to Robert Eggers to help bring to life this gothic horror romance. It’s 3 hours long. Parts of it are in black and white and there’s aspect ratio changes that confuse and unsettle the audience. We debut at Cannes. We get a 47 minute standing ovation but also some walkouts and fainting in the crowd because some vanilla viewers couldn’t handle the ending, which is controversial but has everyone talking.
4. Cord of Communion by themasterletters- this has now become a #1 nyt best selling novel so we have a built in audience and they want it to be a tv show cause of its length and we can’t skip out on any important points. Every streamer wants it but I choose HBO cause of the prestige factor and I’m an Emmy whore. It becomes Sunday night essential viewing replacing Succession it’s like if The Idol was actually good. I hire many talented directors such as Raine Allen Miller (Rye Lane), Francis Lee (God’s Own Country), Gina Prince Bythewood (Beyond the Lights) and I make Rolin Jones be my showrunner. We sweep the Emmys. The episode where Lestat fires Louis becomes the new Red Wedding traumatizing millions.
5. Pieta by baberainbow - When iwtv the amc show ends, I hire Paul Verhoeven to direct a standalone sequel film based on this fic. It’s as insane as you could ever imagine. The Catholic Church is mad at us. It’s condemned by the Vatican and the anti-feminization police. They’re protesting outside our premiere like they did to Benedetta. It doesn’t matter cause it just makes the film an even bigger hit.
6. Hand to God by boltcutters - first I pay Ziska $1 billion to finish writing this. Then I go back in time to 1933 first to make Hollywood not adopt the Hays Code so we can have gay and interracial stuff in movies and then to 1946 so Howard Hawks can direct this Danlou version of The Big Sleep.
PSA: some of my links aren’t working cause I’m on my phone (on vaca) so please forgive me but y’all know where these fics are don’t lie!!!

OFMD fic recs (2022)
I've been thinking about compiling a fic recs list for a while but I have this slight problem where I never bookmark anything, I just assume I'll remember the titles of things I like and mostly I don't, because my memory is bad. It's not a great system tbh.
So, here's a very incomplete list of Flag fics I enjoyed in 2022. Everything is Ed/Stede save where I’ve stated otherwise.
baby, would you find that so odd? by @eluciferate (T): I think about the last paragraph of this fic often, it's beautiful.
but that's none of my business by @chaotic-neutral-knitter (T): I wish I'd had this idea, it's so simple but so funny and well executed.
teeth marks by morian (M): my weakness is Ed POV angst fics and this may be my favourite. It's a reunion fic with a great premise, packs a massive emotional punch and their eventual forgiveness of one another feels earned. I really enjoy how Stede is written in this.
all you left me was a pearl by JustStandingHere (M): there's dialogue and ideas in this fic which I am confident will be better than those that actually make it into season two - sorry Mr Jenkins. The best reunion fic I've read, really in keeping with the show, which I appreciate.
late night talking (Stede/Lucius) / played it so nonchalant (Stede/Lucius/Ed) by ephemeralgrime (both E): possibly my absolute favourite fic(s) in the fandom. So funny, well written and convincing. Stede apologising for how strong he is during sex by explaining that he got into cycling after his divorce… unparalleled characterisation.
love me by the hour by getmean (E): love the rich, sensual writing style and how the pair of them are absolutely obsessed with one another.
Transformative Work by @mia-ugly, @pinehutch (E) (variations on Olu/Frenchie/Jim): I don’t understand how anyone can write anything this clever, to be honest. It feels like a well earned victory lap of a fic. The most interesting Frenchie characterisation I’ve come across.
caught in a waking dream by whatkindofman (E): I love this look at how class issues have shaped Ed. I am always coming back to the heart wrenching part where Stede asks what fantasies of romance Ed had when he was young and Ed thinks about how he and his mother would lie in bed at night, waiting for “her husband” to return.
Wayfaring by JustKeepTrekking (E): one of the first longer Flag fics I read and really enjoyed. Who doesn’t love a well written desert island fic?
Haunt You Down by @yeats-infection (E): I normally need a happy ending to my Flag fics but I make an exception for fics this good. Brilliant premise, OCs you care about, great humour mixed with devastating angst. This should have ten times the reads.
we were the same by @focusfixated (E) (Ed/Jack, Ed/Izzy, Ed/Stede): another in the handful of devastating fics I've really enjoyed. The Ed/Jack chapter is absolutely my favourite flavour for that pairing. The Ed/Stede is especially affecting, with a unique take on their reunion.
damage ensued and tabloid news by @eluciferate (E) (Mary/Ed): Mary and Ed have hot sex where they play around with gender while waiting for that Steve guy to show up or whatever. Brilliant, ten more of these please.
to his bones by wrizard (E): it's between me and god, how many times I've read this. Heed the tags, this won't be for everyone.

Matthew felt awful and angry on Tristan's behalf. He knew Carl felt the same way. Putting that much weigh and expectations on someone and then disregard their feelings about it. What a despicable way to treat your own child or anyone like that. Matthew was glad the man realized the horrible situation he was in and got out of it with help and support as soon as he could. “I am sorry that had happened to you Tristan. What about your brother Alan, did he manage to get out the same way you did?” Carl asked. Tristan hemmed on that question before replying. “It’s a bit complicated.” Tristan said at first. “Alan was a bit afraid to rebel against our family and traditions in the beginning. He didn’t like seeing how I was treated but was afraid to do anything about it. We left on bad terms as well. Alan came a while back and I didn’t even know he was hear until I spotted him in the lab place Gene used to work at. I was visiting Jenkins and the others there when I saw him.” Tristan scratched the back of his head as if a bit embarrassed to mention the next part. “ I admit I did not react with dignity and tact. I body slammed him into the wall and demanded to know what he was doing here. I was afraid he was trying to find me and report my location back to Lexicon. That would mean Gene, Becky, and Alex would be in danger. Alan came clean and admitted he fled because he finally wised up and saw how toxic our way of life was and wanted to know why I chose to stay here of all places. I accept his apology but I was not ready to forgive my brother. It took some time before I did. Hugh was a major help to Alan in recovering from life on Lexicon. He helped in the same way Gene helped me. Alan fell in love with Hugh which shown how he finally broke free from our laws and traditions as it is nearly taboo for a Lexiconian to fall in love outside of our species. Much less marry or produce offspring with another species. Things have grown much better between us.” Just then the door opened and Two Brains along with Steven walked back inside. Becky made an elated monkey squeak and leaped into her father’s arms, nearly knocking the mad scientist over. “Ooof. Hey sweetheart. How have you been doing while I was out.” Becky let out some happy monkey sounds before nuzzling into her dad’s shirt. Tristan answered in his daughter’s place. “Alex informed Mrs. Botsford what happened and she along with Tim swore to keep what happened to Becky and Bob private. Alex is at work but should be coming home soon. Becky, Bob, and I have been busy taking care of the mice pups. I was just talking to your dads a bit when you and Steven entered.” Two Brains gave a relaxed smile. He was glad things went alright while he was out. While still holding onto Becky, Two Brains placed a quick kiss on Tristan’s lips. “I love it when you talk in detail.” Two Brains spoke in a loving and slightly flirty voice. Tristan gave him a reddened grin. Mathew raised an eyebrow in amusement at the sight. Carl still felt his heart warm at the sight. He was glad Gene and Tristan found each other along with Alex. Carl soon noticed Steven walk up to him. “Uncle Carl, can I speak to you in private about something please?” Steven asked his uncle with a slightly nervous tone. Carl nodded. “Of course Steven, excuse us for a moment everyone.” The two men headed upstairs to talk privately in their guest rooms. “Is there something wrong Steven? Did something happen to you while you were gone?” Carl asked with some concern. Gene had seemed a bit anxious but he could have been worried about Becky while he was away. Steven fidgeted a bit as he respond. "I have been thinking about something for a while. I want to let Jessica know I'm still alive. But I know that as soon as she finds out, dad will know too." Steven's face darkened a bit. "After what he said to Gene I want to make that man suffer more with the false knowledge of our demise. But..." Steven's expression shifted to one of sadness. "I don't want to do that to Jessica. She doesn't deserve to be kept in the dark." @dualnaturedscientist
Everyone was exhausted from the eventful day. Dr.Two-Brains had put the mice pups on a makeshift little bed for them to sleep on. They seemed to have grown attached to both Becky and the mad scientist in the short amount of time they were taking care of them. When they put the mice pups down they squeaked to be picked up again. When they finally fell asleep, full from their dinner, Becky and Dr.Two-Brains quietly left. Though Becky didn't want to leave the pinkies alone. The villain spoke softly. "They will be okay there. I promise. Let's be quiet and let them sleep." Becky stared at her father for a moment. She had a thoughtful expression, following after him. Dr.Two-Brains had put his kid to bed. Once she was tucked in. Bob too. He kissed her forehead goodnight. "Goodnight my little ray of hope. Rest well. I'll never let anyone hurt you anymore. I promise. You'll be safe from now on. I'll never let you out of my sight again." He mumbled this, his eyelids feeling so heavy now. He drifted off to sleep, head on the bed. Becky untucked herself and made herself comfortable near her dad. Bob made himself comfortable as well on the opposite side. Both of them curled up next to him. The others had already left for their own home. Leaving Carl, Steven and Matthew with them. Carl and Steven had been taken to the spare rooms while Matthew had only the couch to sleep on. If he was going to be honest it was still much better than the poor excuse of a bed they forced him to sleep on during his time in Maximum prison. The facility where he was transferred was so much worse. He was going to take what they gave. As his son in law wished, he was on his best behavior. It would stay that way until they didn't need him anymore. The truth was, he wants his kids to be happy. Just like any other parent would. Once he was of no use anymore, he will make sure they never see him again. He'll be far away. Just like they wanted. Despite what happened, Gene was still his favorite. He was so proud that his son turned out to be so brilliant, kind from what he saw. He was still all that despite the mouse brain. His son was strong. Maybe even more than him. He gave in, Dr.Two-Brains didn't give into it for the sake of his daughter. Matthew finally allowed himself to drift to sleep.
The next morning, Matthew was woken up by his son cooking breakfast for everyone. Well everyone but him. He assumed that Gene would want to feed the man he hates. Matthew felt guilt. Over hurting his son like that. Everyone else woke up soon, gathering around the table. Once it was set up, everyone helped themself to the delicious and cheesy meal. Matthew stayed in the living room though. Becky glanced over at him, puzzled why he wasn't joining them. Dr.Two-Brains felt his insides twist. As much as he hates Matthew he couldn't let his little girl panic like that. If he's staying here, he must eat as well. He spoke in a less than enthused tone. "You want your plate over there or are you going to join us?" Matthew blinked owlishly. He saw that the table seemed a bit crowded and he doubted they wanted him to sit with them. "I'll fix up my plate and eat on the couch. Thank you." There was no sarcasm in his tone. He was genuinely thanking his son. After they ate, Matthew and Dr.Two-Brains were alone in the living room. It was tense. Matthew wasn't looking at his son, not wanting to make the situation worse. He didn't see the expression Dr.Two-Brains was wearing. Grim. He wanted answers. He was finally able to ask this question he had been dying to ask for years. "Why did you do it? Why did you massacre all those heroes? Rebecca?" Two-Brains found himself even more emotional, bringing up his late best friend. There was anger in his eyes. Sadness. Hurt. Matthew only felt guilty when it came to his family. He hated seeing them hurt. A thought he always had. If he hadn't massacred the heroes, maybe he could've done something to prevent Carl and Steven from being kidnapped. Prevent Gene from going through all that. "You wish to know? I'll tell you. Just a heads up. I'm telling you why and it's not an excuse for what I did. I'm simply telling you what happened." Matthew paused for a second, frowning at the memory. "A good man died so many years ago. Not one hero shed a tear for someone whose intentions were good. Despite his less than legal ways of achieving his goals, he was on their side. They never saw it that way. It didn't affect him in the least. He still fought for what was good. They said horrible things about him. Yet he never retaliated. Never spoke against them in anger. My uncle. He hated this vigilante just as much. Hated that he was teaching me just as much. I didn't realize it at the time but this vigilante was more of a hero than the others were. Not one of them, including my uncle, mourned for him. They never even mentioned his passing once. The one who killed him, he wasn't going to stop. I had to make him stop. The anger I felt. I wiped him out. With his goons. They didn't care how many lives were lost. That added so much fuel to my hatred of heroes. So much so. It blinded me. Making me no better. I became the malicious monster that my uncle said I was. The rage grew in me. He disowned me. So did my mother. When the rage grew, I only had one thought. One goal. I was unfortunately blinded by this. Not seeing the damage I've done after I executed my plan. All of my rage was released. I don't remember killing most of them. But I know I did. I truly love you and your siblings. Your father, I never stopped loving him. Yet my hatred was stronger. I gave into it. I know this is the consequence of my actions and I accept it. If you wish to get revenge, I won't fight back. Do as you please. I'm truly sorry. I know it doesn't mean anything to you since it's from me. But my apology is genuine. I am sorry. I don't expect forgiveness. But I thought you deserved an apology."
Dr. Two Brains sat stunned at Maddrix's explanation. He had no idea Matthew used to be a hero. None of them did. He didn't know how to react to his apology either. It was a little too late to say sorry. Yet on the other hand, Two Brains could tell he was being serious and genuine. Maddrix's explanation though, it opened up more questions for him as he reflected on his past before the massacre, analyzing Matthew's actions and comparing it to what he knows now. "Is that why you raised me to be a villain? So I wouldn't end up like the heroes you hated so much?" Two Brains asked. Matthew shook his head. "I had that hatred festering, but it wasn't the main reason I raised you to be a villain. I genuinely saw the natural spark and flare you had for villainy at an early age. When you acted sweet and innocent as a cover to get what you want or to get away with biting people that made you mad." Matthew paused a bit as he chuckled a little at the memories. "I honestly lost count of how many people you bit." Two Brains couldn't help but smirk at that. "It was the only way I could get back at those who made me upset. Neither you nor dad would let me gain access to tech until I was 13." Two Brains quipped. Matthew nodded with a bittersweet smile. "True. We were both slightly afraid what you mind would do if we gave you access to tools and tech before you were mature enough to use them." Matthew then frowned. "The true reason was I didn't want you to end up like me. I had a lot of anger and aggression issues when I was growing up. I don't exactly know where they came from. I just know that my uncle nor my mother never gave me the help I needed. My uncle saw me nothing more than a weapon that made him look good until I didn't. My mother was a spineless fool who went along with anything my uncle told her. I wanted to help channel your villainous impulses into something productive. I wanted to give you the helping guidance I never got. Even after you got me arrested. I was miffed yeah but I was never truly mad at you. I'm proud of the person you grown up into. Not because of the villain part. It's because you have a lot more control over your priorities and better restraints over your impulses than I ever did." "So that's why you told dad you were an orphan." Two Brains muttered as he processed what Matthew told him. Maddrix just shrugged. "Well your biological grandfather walked out when I was a toddler and the only true parental figure I had died when I was teenager. It was easier to say I was an orphan than to go into the nitty gritty." Dr. Two Brains leveled Matthew a hardened look. "You kept a lot of secrets from dad, including the part about you and me being villains. I remember you said it was best that no one else in our family knew the truth about our villain work. Even though they wouldn't be bothered about it, you still didn't want them to know. Why was that? Were you afraid of them getting hurt if they knew?" Dr. Two Brains interrogated. Matthew's expression became pale before he turned his gaze away Dr. Two Brains looked at the man with annoyance and confusion for not answering his question in a rude manner. A thought then struck his head. That evasive and somewhat rude reaction. He knew it all too well. "You were afraid dad would hate your for being a villain and kick you out like your mom and uncle did. That was why?" Two Brains muttered quietly. Maddrix didn't reply. He didn't have too. Dr. Two Brains could see clear as day the prickling tears the villain was trying to blink away. Two Brains gave a bitter chuckle. "I guess I did take more after you than I realized." Two Brains mumbled. Both he and Matthew never wanted their loved ones to see the true them, consumed by their fear of being hated and alone by those they cared the most. The difference here, while Two Brains found a better way to cope with his fears and learn to be more open to others, Matthew didn't. @dualnaturedscientist

Sense and Sensibility 'what if?'
@bethanydelleman I hope you don't mind me tagging you in this post.
I wanted to have a bit of 'what if' conversation about S&S, mostly because this idea rooted itself in my brain and won't leave.
What if love interests were in fact a little different in this book? To be precise what if Colonel Brandon found himself interested in Mrs. Dashwood? Maybe it was her he heard playing the piano (let's be honest Mrs Jenkins is more than capable of talking her into performing music), or maybe they connected talking about less than ideal life circumstances. Colonel is about 36 in the book and Mrs. Dashwood is 40. He is much closer to her age than to Marianne's, and I think it would be a good thing. She would be his partner and his equal in everything. I think she is just as disillusioned with life as he is, even if at first glance it would seem she shares Marianne's love for romance and light-heartedness. She had to live through loosing her home, house and status, because her husband's son (a man she most likely raised when he was a boy, on who's wedding she was sitting along with his father) proved he didn't care about his family even a fraction as much as he cared about money and pleasing his greedy wife. I feel like these two would be able to find love, balance, understanding and unwavering support in each other. And maybe even a firy romance, because why not.
And what if at that point Eliza haven't yet made her disastrous escape with Willoughby? By marrying Colonel Brandon and Mrs Dashwood would be able to provide a stable and safe home for FOUR girls. Eliza is Brandon's ward but at no point was she living with him. I think there are a lot of reasons at play here one being obviously the fact she is an illegitimate child born to a disgraced mother, two there never was a woman able to care and bring up a girl child in Delaford. Since Eliza's heritage isn't widely know (all people have are indistinct rumors) I think Colonel could bring her home, claim she was a daughter of his cousin and more importantly under his protection. She is an educated young woman, beautiful (why do you think Willoughby secuced her), with a dowary (if Colonel provides it, which I think he could for all 4 of them) and society is willing to forgive a lot if you posses those atributes. Maybe she would have a chance of a better life, one her mother never had for herself.
I also think Marianne and Eliza would get on like a house on fire.
Plus can you imagine the face of Mrs Henry Dashwood when she hears the news? I think she might genuinely have an anurism.

Random Fact of the Week #68
Against all odds and expectations, James was the one to give Harry the least amount of grey hairs as a teenager.
Perhaps it was Karma. Fate's way of making it up to Harry after dealing with the boy as a child--the endless behavior issues, the stressful calls down to the school, the ugly fights with his siblings.
Fate--and James--owed Harry an easy adolescence.
And it was. Truly, it was.
Until James started dating.
After the massive fall-out that came with Harry's rather unfortunate opinion towards his latest girlfriend Gemma, James refused to speak to him for a week.
"All I'm saying is that she might care more for your name than she cares for you!"
Harry shook his head, trying to forget for the umpteenth time the words that had plagued him since last Tuesday. The words that had caused a look of hurt on James' face that Harry never dreamed he'd be the cause of.
"It'll be fine," Abby said, breaking him out of his thoughts.
She walked towards him where he was sitting on the bed, and placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.
"Let's go downstairs, she'll be here soon," she said.
Harry sighed loudly and rubbed his face. "Why am I nervous?" he said. "She's a fifteen year old girl."
Abby grinned and stroked the hair at the back of his head. "If it makes you feel any better, I'm sure she's nervous too."
He laughed and shook his head. "God, I'm being ridiculous."
"You’re not," Abby said, sitting down next to him and resting her chin on his shoulder. "You want this night to go perfectly, so you and James can go back to normal. I get it, Harry. But it'll be fine, trust me. James is just glad you're giving her a proper chance."
Harry sighed again and nodded. "Okay, let's get this over with," he said standing up.
"Is that the attitude we're looking for?" Abby said raising her eyebrows at him as if he were a child.
"Let's get this over with!" he said sarcastically, pumping his fist in the air.
Abby snorted. "You're such a shit," she said, pushing him forward through the doorway where he pretended to stumble over, nearly running into James.
"Oi!" the boy said, sidestepping him.
Harry straightened up at once and cleared his throat. "Sorry."
James gave them both an annoyed look as he walked by. "Gemma will be here soon. Keep the cringe to a minimum please."
"Keep the cringe to a minimum please," Abby said in a whiny voice. "Is he getting more snotty or is it just me?"
"I heard that," James called from the stairs.
*****
The arrival of Gemma Jenkins was met with various reactions.
James stood up at once, leading her out of the grate and helping her brush the soot off her shoulders.
Abby smiled adoringly at the boy's back, while Harry stood tall, attempting to appear kind but imposing.
"Hi, Gemma!" Abby said apparently unable to wait any longer for introductions.
"Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Potter," the girl said, her cheeks turning a bit pink as she met their eyes. "Thank you so much for having me over."
"Thank you for coming," Harry said, stepping forward and offering his hand.
Gemma's eyes went a bit wide as she accepted his handshake before shaking Abby's hand as well.
"It's so nice to meet you both," Gemma said. "Mr. Potter, I--I've heard so much about you."
Harry could feel James' eyes on him, and he forced a pleasant smile on his face. "Have you?" he said, already not liking where this was going.
"Oh, yes. James talks about you a lot. You're like his hero," Gemma said with an awkward giggle, before turning to Abby and clearing her throat. "And you of course, Mrs. Potter."
"Oh, I'm sure he talks about his dad more," Abby said with a roll of her eyes causing Gemma to give a relieved smile.
Harry didn't respond, looking over at James instead and feeling his heart warm and ache at the same time.
If he felt shit before, it was nothing compared to how felt now knowing that James seemed to speak so highly of him. And to his girlfriend of all people. Did she seem a little starstruck? Sure. But God, she was fifteen.
He'd been so ridiculous.
Harry vaguely heard Abby calling for Al and Lily to come downstairs as he walked over to James.
"Come on," Harry said, giving his shoulder a squeeze. "Let's go meet Gemma properly. I'd really like to get to know her better. She seems sweet."
James looked up at him, his lips turned up just a fraction in a smile. "Sure thing, Dad," he said, clapping Harry on the back.
"So...Gemma Jenkins..." they heard Al say as they approached. "How does it feel knowing that your name is an alliteration?"
"Erm..." Gemma said.
"Her first name starts with a 'G', you git," Lily said.
"Alliteration is based on phonetic sounds as well as letters," Al said at once. "Who's the git now?"
"Still you," James said pushing Al out of the way as he sat beside his girlfriend and gave her a quick peck on the lips.
This was met with immediate outcries from Harry, Al, and Lily while Abby tutted at them loudly.
"Oh relax, it's not as if they're snogging," Abby said, causing Gemma to turn a bright shade of red.
Lily pretended to gag. "Please, not before dinner."
"Speaking of," Harry said, standing up. "Why don't you lot sit yourselves down at the table. James, you want to help me bring the food out?"
James nodded and followed him into the kitchen.
As soon as they were alone, they faced each other and spoke at the same time:
"How am I doing?"
"Do you like her so far?"
Harry laughed before looking down at his feet. "It doesn't matter what I think," he said. "I trust you, James, I do. You're such a good kid, and you've got such a big heart. And I want to protect it with everything I've got, but..."
Harry swallowed hard and met the boy's eyes. "I can't," he said, shaking his head sadly. "The older you get, the more I realize that. I'm just so sorry I hurt you."
He drew the boy into a hug and held him tightly.
"I know," James said quietly. "And I forgive you obviously. I did, like...right away, but I was mad and wanted you to stew a bit."
Harry laughed and ruffled his hair as he let him go. "Are we good, now, though?" he said. "I know it was only a week, but...I missed you, mate."
"We're good," James said with an easy smile. "And we've got a lot to catch up on, but I'll fill you in after dinner. Don't ever make me ignore you for a week again. "
"I'll do no such thing."

Liam understands that it’s a sanitary emergency or whatever, but he really doesn’t like staying home.
Liam also doesn’t like going outside, let’s be clear, because outside there are people and no thanks, but being home all day means that he has to deal with his neighbors more than usual and his neighbors are even worse than people.
There’s Mrs Jenkins, Satan’s actual reincarnation in an old lady, who hates Liam for no other reason that he exists and that he sometimes walks all over her stupid flowers out of spite, but mostly because he exists, and she’s the reason why Liam can’t be in his own fucking garden: she’s always there, right at the other side of street, sitting in her wooden chair and staring. She doesn’t even keep a book, not even to pretend to do something, she openly sits there just to stare and judge him as soon as he steps outside, and she never stops, not even when Liam yells at her, which is all the time he sees her, and sometimes even when he can’t see her, because he knows that she’s still looking at him from inside anyway, her and her judjy blank gaze – the same one her nephew once used to convince Liam she is blind. Please, as if he would believe that.
The left side of the house is also impracticable because the biggest assholes on planet Earth live there and if Liam as much catch a glimpse of them from his window his entire day is ruined. He despises Brett and Nolan so much, always trying to start shit with him. They went as far as to give him a cake when they moved in last month. Who knows what kind of shit they put in it, hoping Liam would fall for it. As if. He threw it in the bin and egged their house to teach them a lesson.
That leaves the right side, which was once Liam’s safe place. It’s still the only side where he allows himself to open the windows, but it’s just out of habitude since the days of old Gerard Argent living next to him are long gone –just like he is, heart attacks don’t forgive. Liam has been cleared of all the accusations by the way.
Now Theo lives there, and Theo is the worst of them all, always finding new ways of making Liam lose his cool.
The last one of his evil schemes being the piano.
It was already bad when Liam had to hear his tragic attempts at learning how to play it only in the morning, but now that they’re officially advised to stay home it’s nonstop and Liam’s ears had enough. It’s not even that he’s bad at it, he’s even decent, Liam guesses, if that’s your thing, that is, but it’s a matter of principle. As a neighbor you have the duty to not let the people living next to you know that you’re alive. Any constant and audible noise coming from your house into theirs is a serious infraction of that rule.
“You know, you’re not supposed to go outside unless you have an emergency.” Theo says as he opens the door and glances at Liam with that superior air of his.
“I have an emergency.” Liam explains before tackling him to the ground.
**
They’re still rolling on the floor growling insults at each other when it happens, because Theo is a childish little shit and he refuses to say that he will stop playing the piano with his window open.
“Don’t make me call the police again, just say it!”
“Please do call them, didn’t they say they were going to arrest you if you disturbed them one more time?”
They did say that, because police officers in their town are too lazy to do their jobs and if you call them a few times when no one is dying they’re gonna be all rude and unhelpful about it, but Liam didn’t think Theo heard it too.
“They said they were going to arrest you.”.
“Yeah? Let’s ask them since they’re already here.”
Theo is such a liar and Liam is about to bite his calf because of it, it’s already in his face anyway, currently trapping him in some weird wrestling move –where did he even learn that, god, he’s so annoying – when the blue light of a police car actually blinds him and only then Liam registers the metallic voice filling the streets.
“...and all the necessities will be delivered at your doorstep. We repeat: do not leave the house for any reason, together we will prevent the zombie apocalypse from happening but we need your collaboration. Everyone that will be found outside, no matter how close to their habitation, will be arrested no questions asked. Starting from now.”
 Liam runs.
 **
 Liam runs right back.
“What the hell do you want now?” Theo scoffs opening the door. “Didn’t you hear them?”
“I forgot my keys” Liam admits miserably because in his rage he totally ignored the part where he was also going back after shutting Theo up. “I need you to help me force the lock.”
“You just attacked me for no reason, I’m not helping you.” Theo crosses his arms challenging, because why would be helpful for once, right?
“It wasn’t for no reason, I did it because I hate you, now shut up and help me before I get arrested.”
At that Theo stops, frowning thoughtful before taking a step towards Liam.
“HE’S HERE! THERE’S SOMEONE OUTSIDE, HE’S RIGHT HERE, COME AND GET HIM!”
Liam tackles him.
 ***
“Hey, what part of doors closed isn’t clear to you two?” There’s an officer on Theo’s doorstep, looking down critically at where they’re once again rolling on the floor. “I’ll let it slide for this time since you’re inside, but keep it closed.”
“Wait, he doesn’t live here!” Theo doesn’t hesitate to rat him out and Liam does bite his calf this time.
The officer stops and throws them another thoughtful glance.
“Well, congrats, you got yourself a roommate.” He announces before closing the door behind him with little care for Theo’s shocked gasp. Fucking drama queen.
Liam faints.

*****
“Bucky? What is up with you tonight?”
“What d'ya mean?”
“You keep fidgeting.”
“Sorry.”
He shifts beside you again before stilling, and you settle back against him to continue watching the movie, cuddling into his warmth, a small smile on your face as he pulls you closer.
It's been so nice having him home for the past few months.
After filming on his début show wrapped following it's forth season, he was inundated with offers of work, and he'd flown back especially to announce his new role was in a British series, filmed mostly on location only a few miles down the road. You had tried to protest, not wanting him to sacrifice his career for you, but when he'd explained it really was the best move, in every sense, you'd been thrilled.
Now, you can't imagine not spending your free time with him.
The weekends are just like they used to be, at the diner, or picnics by the river, sometimes lunch at the local garden centre as you buy yet another packet of seeds, what is different however are the crowds Bucky draws. The public are now aware of the nature of your relationship with him, and whilst he tries to be inconspicuous the two of you together are far too recognisable.
At first he hadn't been keen to subject you to the attention, and the potential backlash, but the number of times he had been wrongly linked to yet another actor was growing out of control, and he felt he had to do something to quash all the rumours.
“I never want you to doubt what we have,” Bucky had said when he told you his plan.
In order to cause as little fuss as possible, one afternoon in the winter just after you got together, he'd posted a picture of you and him at the Hollywood sign, with a simple caption, 'my world'. He had warned you beforehand that not everyone on the internet would be positive, especially when they learnt he's not 'available', but you knew it was for the best.
The general reaction wasn't nearly as bad as you feared. Isabella and her little friends belief that you and Bucky would one day be married appears to have been commonly held within the school, as when you went in on the Monday after his big declaration no one batted an eye. They clearly either thought you two were already together, or were not in the least surprised that it had finally happened, and aside from Edwin's spontaneous hug in congratulations, which caught you off guard in the nicest way, the day passed as any other would.
Even when the press turned up at the front gate, desperate to get a picture of the one who'd stolen the heart of Hollywood's favourite darling. Peggy 'no nonsense' Carter saw to them, and armed with laws and regulations around the sharing of photographs of children, before the morning break they'd been scared away. She also accompanied you home that evening to ensure there weren't any lingering around, wanting to make sure your home was still a safe space, somewhere to escape back to when everything became too much.
Eventually it all died down, and Bucky looks so much happier now he can talk openly about you in interviews, not having to dodge around the subject. Will you ever get used to seeing your name on celebrity gossip sites? Probably not, but it's just part of the crazy roller-coaster that is life with Bucky, and no matter how nasty the journalists can get you know it's all worth it.
By his side you can get through anything.
Back in the present he squirms next to you again, knocking into you as he adjusts his position.
“Bucky?”
“Hmm?”
“Is everything alright?”
“Yes.” Looking over at you, he smiles tightly. “Well, maybe. I'm not sure yet.”
Frowning, you pause the movie to give him your full attention. “Anything I can do?”
“Whether everything is okay kinda depends on you,” He says quietly.
Tilting your head as you watch the way he wipes his palms down his thighs, you wonder what's got him so worked up. Now you're thinking about it, you realise he hasn't relaxed properly all evening, despite showering and changing into his pyjamas, he's been paying more attention to tending the fire than enjoying the film. Sitting up, you gently remove his arm from around you so you can rise from your slouched position and get a proper look at his face. It's almost the same look of mild terror he wore four years ago in New York's Central Park, when you had both tripped your way through declarations of love, just before your very first kiss.
It clicks. There's only one reason he'd look like that now.
“Bucky, I know what this is.”
He blinks up at you. “Oh yeah?” He asks, voice high.
“Yes, and you don't need to be so nervous. We've talked about this.”
“I still want...” He trails off, his gaze slipping to the dying embers in the fireplace.
“Bucky?”
“Hmm.”
“I love you, you know?”
His face softens at your declaration. “Yeah. I do.”
“And you know there's no proper way to do this, no perfect way, and no way to mess it up either.
“I know. I just want it to be special for you. Please let me try at least.”
“All right.” You sit back in your seat, buzzing with anticipation as he collect his thoughts. Licking his lips, he takes a shaky breath, looking back across at you as he begins to speak.
“Y/N. My love. My best friend. These four years have been everything I've ever wanted, and even before then, your friendship completely changed me, for the better I hope. Thank you for always keeping my feet on the ground.”
“You're the sole reason I'm where I am today, and without you I'd be lost. I knew you were someone special from the moment we first met, outside the school gates. Do you remember?
“'Course. Mrs Jenkins hasn't been able to look me in the eye since.”
He laughs brightly. “Well, you were very quick to shut her down when she asked if I even had the right qualifications to teach.”
“I wasn't too snappy, was I?”
“Nah. My Y/N? Never.” His manner turns serious again, sitting up straight and maintaining eye contact. “I want to thank you Y/N. Thank you believing in me when I didn't. Thank you for giving me the confidence to keep going. And thank you for always being there, for forgiving me despite giving you every reason not to. I couldn't live in this world without you.”
“I couldn't live without you either Bucky,” You croak, your emotions getting the better of you. Reaching across to squeeze your thigh, he waits for your gazes to meet again before continuing. “Which brings me to a very important question.”
You nod encouragingly, grinning through the gathering tears.
“I'm gonna do this bit properly, so,” He slides off the sofa, kneeling before you and taking hold of your left hand, his own eyes watering as he peers up at you. “Y/N Y/L/N, light of my life, most beautiful person I've ever met, will you do me the honour of marry-”
“Yes!”
“-ing me?” He finishes, even as you're pulling him up to kiss clumsily. Knocked off balance by your enthusiasm, he ends up crushing you into the cushions, his body relaxing against yours when you refuse to let go.
Bucky always kisses you like he doesn't know when he'll next get a chance, and this time is no different. Tongues find each other as you hook one of your legs over his hips, the taste of salt from both of your tears only making the moment sweeter as you gasp into each others mouths, fingers lacing above your head as you try to get as close as possible.
Breaking away at length to breathe, you sigh contentedly, running your fingers through Bucky's hair as he traces his own along your sides.
“Didn't ever imagine you'd propose to me in your pyjamas,” You murmur after a minute or two.
“Sorry! If you want-”
“Bucky, shush. I'm teasing. This is perfect.”
He presses a kiss to your knuckles. “I'm sorry I haven't got a ring either.”
“That's all right too. With my job I wouldn't wear it often anyway.”
“But I will get you one. Gotta do it properly, every little detail.”
“If you insist.”
“I do.”
To prevent him from promising anything more extravagant, you lean up to touch your lips to his, softer now the initial elation has dimmed slightly into comfortable bliss. His body is still trembling with the pent up nerves, making your heart skip, so in love with this man you could explode.
“Was it really that scary for you to ask me to marry you?”
“Yes,” He laughs, resting his head against your neck.
“Golden Globe winning Bucky Barnes was scared to ask little ol' primary school teacher Y/N to marry him?”
“Technically, it was James Barnes who won the Golden Globe. Bucky is just your boyfriend-”
“Fiancé.”
“-Fiancé, who still can't believe he's got this lucky, so yes, I was scared.”
“You knew what I was going to say, though?”
“It wasn't so much your answer I was scared of, just making sure I got it right for you.”
Melting under him at his words, you let him trail his lips down your throat as your mind wanders to the big day.
“Oh!”
“What?” Bucky asks, not lifting his head off your shoulder.
“I was just thinking about how many flower girls and boys we're going to have to have. Amelia and Benjamin, obviously. Edwin and Ana's children, even Spencer, he's old enough isn't he? Or he will be by the time it happens. Isabella is almost too old now she's twelve, nearly a teenager.”
He chuckles at your rambling. “You know she'll still want to be one. It's all she ever asks me about when you're not in the room.”
“Really?”
“All the time.”
“Can't let her down then. And what about your best man? Dayton or Sam?”
“Err.” Bucky pauses his kisses to contemplate his answer. “Now you're asking.”
“Which one will have the most embarrassing stories? Pick them.”
“In that case then, neither.”
“Would it really be that bad?” You giggle, squishing his cheeks between your hands. “I know everything already.”
“True. But does your mum need to? Or mine for that matter? I wasn't exactly an angel during college. Or at any wrap party, ever.” He winks at you when you stick your tongue out in mock disgust. “Don't act so innocent Y/N. We both know what happened in that bathroom at the NTA's.”
Releasing his face, you look away as your own heats up. “Dunno what you're talking about.”
Bucky hums, grinning cheekily. “No? I'm sure Sam remembers what he walked in on.”
You slap his chest lightly. “Don't make it sound so filthy! Nobody was naked, nothing explicit was going to happen. I was just happy for you.”
“Very happy, I'd say.”
Rolling your eyes as he snickers into your hair, you shuffle into the corner of the sofa to allow him to lay beside you, foreheads touching as you breathe each other in.
“We're engaged Bucky,” You whisper gleefully, linking your hands together and pulling them to rest over your heart. “Lucky you. Must feel like winning an Oscar, getting to marry me,” You joke, smiling so wide it hurts.
“Better.” Bucky says it so matter of factly, with such a straight face, that your breath catches.
“Remember to talk about me in your acceptance speech when you do win one, then.”
“If I win one.”
“When, Bucky. When you win. And I'll be right there by your side so you won't forget who to thank first.”
“Okay, if you say so. When I win I promise to mention how being your husband is better than any academy award, in front of millions of viewers and a roomful of fellow professionals. Should pick up a few 'ideal partner' points if nothing else.”
He beams at you as your body shakes with laughter, knowing that he is ridiculous enough to keep that promise.
“Seriously though Y/N.” His lips brush yours once, twice, three more times before he pulls back enough so you can see just how much he means it. “Being with you is like winning an Oscar every day.”
*****
A/n 2: This really is the end now, however much I'll miss them. But I can't just keep dragging it on, mainly because I've run out of ideas! I couldn't write their wedding for so many reasons, one, I couldn't keep it gender neutral as easily, and two, I just wouldn't know where to start! So just imagine it yourself. Sam is definitely gonna be there, along with Bucky and Y/N's entire families, Peggy of course, Edwin, Ana and their children, a guest list and a half, definitely a day to remember! But not something I could write, so this is the natural end of their tale... :(
So here is my 3rd (probably?) thank you note! It's the middle of February now and I posted the first chapter of this fic in the middle of June last year, a whole eight months ago, so if you've been here from the beginning just know I love you and thank you so much for sticking with me. This hasn't been the most consistently updated story but we've got there in the end! And it you've commented at any point, please know I treasure every single word. I write for myself, the story I want to read, with the sort of characters I would like to have in my life, so if anyone else enjoys it too then that it just a bonus!
I have another idea for a slow burn series, and hopefully it won't be too long until I post that. More Bucky x reader, of course ;) so if you've liked this, maybe you'll like that too! Stick around, basically!
Once again, thank you so much for reading! xoxo

Thoughts on Otis Molyneux
I hesitated somewhat before making this post because the fandom seems to have settled on Otis being “a good man who made one terrible mistake” and who am I to rain on anyone’s parade?
Inner goddess: A very opinionated woman … that’s who … No one keeps baby down!
Well … since you put it that way …
My very first meta on Sanditon revolved around the idea that this show is Andrew Davies’ homage to Austen’s entire body of work. And since I discovered a very interesting link between Otis and one of the more misinterpreted Austen characters, I couldn’t resist. Particularly since every time I read a remark on Otis, I end up going:
He is a most fortunate man! Everything turns out for his own good! He meets a young woman at a watering place, gains her affections, she consents to an engagement! He treats her abominably, she bares it like a saint! His aunt is in the way, his aunt dies! He has used everybody ill and they are all delighted to forgive him! He is a most fortunate man indeed!
Emma is perhaps Jane Austen’s most transgressive novel and, while it is not my favorite (that’s Persuasion in case anyone was wandering), I think it’s the clearest indication of her genius. In Emma, Austen not only spoofs herself, as the old maid Miss Bates, but also pulls off a master stroke in concealing her villain, Frank Churchill, not only from the characters but also from the audience.
Austen villains are usually charming, fun and attractive, most of the time far more so than the hero that will eventually win the heroine’s heart. What Austen does with the likes of Wickham and Willoughby is show that superficial charm and a pretty face are poor substitutes for substance, integrity and a value system.
In order to drive that point home, her villains usually suffer a fall from grace: Wickham gets exiled to Newcastle (the degradation!) and is stuck with Lydia for the rest of his life; Willoughby gets ousted by his aunt, told off by Eleanor and publically canceled by Mrs. Jenkins.
Whatever it may be, all of her villains suffer some consequences (even if it’s just not getting the girl as is the case for William Elliot in Persuasion). All except one: Frank Churchill. As Mr. Knightley’s frustrated speech above shows, Frank is so fortunate that by the end of Emma, he gets everything he’s ever wanted and everyone continues to love and cherish him as if nothing had happened (with the exception of Emma and Knightley).
And because the characters move on from his betrayal so quickly you can barely get a glimpse into their POVs, so does the audience. By the end of the book, most of the readers are as pleased with Frank as the people of Highbury.
I can just imagine Jane Austen cackling with joy at our silliness.
Just because there are no consequences for Frank and because all ends well despite his efforts to the contrary, it doesn’t follow that he should be absolved of responsibility. For all his professed love for Jane, Frank involves her in an imaginary extramarital affair, flirts with Emma in front of her and ultimately humiliates her at the picnic. For all his friendliness and affability, he is less than generous to his father, uses Emma for his own motives and is secretly chopping at the bit to see his aunt, the woman who raised him, dead so he can inherit her fortune. Despite what his endgame would suggest, Frank Churchill is an immature, selfish man who is used to getting his own way with little thought or care about how that might hurt other people.
Which brings us to Otis “I fell in love with your soul” Molyneux.
But, but … I hear you say … Fortunatelylori, he did suffer consequences. He lost Georgiana!
To which I say don’t bring out the pity parade just yet. Because in losing Georgiana, Otis’ actions are reduced to an unfortunate youthful indiscretion by the characters (Georgiana and Charlotte) as well as by the people watching. Because he shed some resigned tears and spoke prettily about how much he loved Georgiana’s soul, everyone is “delighted to forgive him”.
But just as with Frank, is his love for Georgiana enough to absolve him of his wrongdoings? Should we cheer for their potential reunion or think she deserves better, the way Mr. Knightley thinks about Jane? And while we’re on the subject, what are Otis’ crimes? He clearly never meant to cause Georgiana’s kidnapping so what’s the big deal?
What gets lost in Charlotte’s “you are insensible of feeling” rebuke of Sidney is that Otis isn’t a victim of circumstances nor is him honestly being in love with Georgiana a get out of jail free card. Otis is a gambling addict who has amassed debts so vast that the man who is trying to collect them resorts to kidnapping a teenager to get his money back. And that’s just one guy he owes money to.
Does he love Georgiana? Yes, in his own way he loves her just about as much as he loves losing money at cards. What do you think would have happened if they married? Because me thinks Otis would run through that 100.000 real quick while simultaneously loving the hell out of Georgiana’s soul.
Which brings me to Otis’s less than agreeable character traits: lying and manipulation. He lies to Georgiana from the first moment he meets her. Worst yet, he takes advantage of her vulnerability and he encourages her to rely solely on him for emotional support:
Georgiana: I was uprooted. Lost. In despair. Otis restored me to life. Those 3 months were the happiest I’ve known.
That sounds great and all but what happens after he’s gone from her life is that Georgiana feels like she suddenly has no one and nothing. Because her entire sense of self was tied to Otis.
He also allows Georgiana to believe that her guardian is a racist monster who is keeping them apart because of the color of his skin when he knows full well that’s not the case and also that Georgiana needs to have a good relationship with Sidney for the foreseeable future at least.
In order to keep up the charade, he takes active part in poisoning Charlotte against Sidney and very much enjoys playing the wronged party in this whole scenario:
Otis: But then your friend, Mr. Parker, took it upon himself to rip us apart.
Charlotte: However painful that might have been, Mr. Parker must surely have had Georgiana’s best interest at heart.
Otis: Then you clearly don’t know Mr. Parker as well as you think.
Lying is so ingrained in Otis’ modus operandi that he can’t help himself from doing it even when there’s not even the slightest chance that he can get away with it:
Beecroft: Oh, yes! The famous Miss Lambe! Mr. Molyneux speaks of little else. Miss Lambe this, Miss Lambe that.
Otis: That is a lie! If I mentioned her it was only in passing …
Beecroft: I’m not the liar here. You told me a wedding was imminent. That her fortune was as good as yours. I never would have let him run such a debt otherwise.
Otis: All I wanted was to buy a little time … If I had known even for one moment …
What was that about Sidney not having good reason to keep you away from Georgiana, Otis?!?
Also look at him running the eluding responsibility obstacle course like a pro:
Otis: He’s sold her! The villain has sold her!
Charlotte: What?
Sidney: In return for a promise to buy his debt, she’s been handed to some dissolute named Howard. Even now he’ll be dragging her to an altar.
Charlotte: An altar? But that cannot be allowed without your permission.
Sidney:  No. They have no such laws across the border. There they will marry you with impunity.
Otis: Had you only allowed us to marry!
Otis has gambled himself silly, bragged about Georgiana’s money to the worst possible people, disappeared from public view (he hasn’t picked up his mail in weeks because he’s in hiding from the debt collectors) and his reaction is to put all the blame on Sidney. That is not the behavior of a well-balanced adult. This is the behavior of a gambler who thinks he can talk his way out of anything because he has “game”.
This brings us to his last scene with Georgiana when everything comes into focus. If you really think about it, there is not a single moment during their relationship where Otis isn’t lying to her, including the romantic separation that hit everyone in the feels:
Otis: I’ve gambled. That is true. But whatever they tell you, I never gambled with your name.
Notice how the first thing out of his mouth is manipulative. “Whatever they tell you” i.e. turst no one but me. I’m the only one who is telling the truth so listen to me as I lie my ass off right now.
Otis: I never boasted of your wealth. I boasted of you.
Two lines in and he’s already lied twice. You can actually do a play by play of what he says here and what he says in the Beecroft scene.
And then comes the coup de grace!
Otis: It was pride. That is all! And Lord knows, I have paid for it!
As consequence of his gambling, hiding from his creditors and running his mouth about Georgiana’s fortune, the woman he loves was kidnapped, Charlotte almost got raped and Sidney is however many thousands of pounds lighter for paying off his debts. So bring out the waterworks for Otis, guys! Let’s not forget who the real victim in all of this is!
Alexa, play Despacito.
Otis lies so much he has ended up internalizing his lies to such an extent that he has turned himself into a victim. His narrative is ultimately rejected by Georgiana, leaving him pained but that shouldn’t fool you into thinking he’s a good guy. Neither he nor Frank are moustache twirling villains but their flaws and the way they allow those flaws to affect the people they supposedly love speaks volumes about their character.
Maybe, eventually, they both grow up. Maybe Frank becomes more selfless and starts treating others with respect. Maybe Otis never gambles again and becomes the responsible civil rights leader he wants others to see him as.
But as things stand at the end of their story line, I, for one, am not willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. It’s sadly too late for Jane to pick herself another husband. But I haven’t given up hope that Georgiana will shake Otis off like a spot of English rain.

Chapter 2
Ringing. The only sound Derek could make out was the constant ringing in his ears. His chest hurt and something was leaking from his forehead. Blood? Why was his forehead bleeding?
“David? David are you alright?” he finally managed to ask. Silence.
“David?” he tried again. Still nothing. He willed himself to turn his head only to discover a gaping hole in his windshield and his son not in the passenger seat beside him. Derek couldn’t wrap his mind around what had just happened. Suddenly there was a knock on his window.
“Everything’s going to be alright, sir. You’ve been involved in a hit and run accident. Are you alright?”
“My head,” Derek mumbled.
“Alright. I’m going to open the door and get you out.”
“David. Where’s David? Where’s my son?” The paramedic’s face paled as he helped Derek from the wrecked BMW.
“Let’s get you checked out first sir, then we’ll talk about David.” Derek allowed the paramedic to lead him to the ambulance and take him to the hospital. He faded in and out of consciousness several times before finally passing out. He awoke several hours later, bruised and bandaged and in excruciating pain from the neck down.
“Mr. Jenkins?” the doctor asked cautiously when she noticed that he had come to.
“Where am I?” he asked, clearly still dazed from the morphine.
“You’re at the hospital. You were involved in a hit and run accident.”
“Where’s my son? Where’s David?” The doctor sighed softly before delivering the heartbreaking news.
“David didn’t survive the crash, Mr. Jenkins. He was ejected from the vehicle.” The remainder of the doctor’s words faded as Derek processed what he had just been told. His son, the only piece of his family that he had left had been taken from him in a car accident. The tears streamed down his face and his screams could be heard several rooms away. It had only been 4 years since he lost his wife and now he had lost his son.
“There are some officers here that would like to speak with you about what you remember,” the doctor said. “I’ll let them know that you’re awake.” With that, she turned on her heels to alert the awaiting officers. They came in about five minutes later, their faces solemn and regretful.
“Alderman Jenkins, I’m sorry for your loss,” the taller gentleman said. “My name is Detective Elliot Fitzgerald and this is my partner Antonio Ramirez. Can you tell us what you remember from the accident?” Derek sat up slowly, wincing slightly from the pain in his neck.
“All I remember is leaving the baseball game with David. We were on the way to go get dinner and ice cream since his team won. We were stopped at a red light and when it was our turn to go, this car just came out of nowhere and hit us dead on. Everything goes blank after that.”
“Do you remember what kind of car it was?” Ramirez asked, writing important details in his notebook.
“It was black, a Mercedes I think.”
“Were you able to get a glimpse of the driver?”
“No, everything happened so fast.”
“Thank you, Alderman. We’ll pull the traffic cameras from that intersection and see what we can find. Thank you for your cooperation and I apologize again for your loss.” With that, the gentlemen left, once again leaving Derek with his thoughts.
“I failed you, Tameka. I promised you that I would take care of him and I failed. Please forgive me,” he sobbed.
“Are you sure there’s nothing you can do, doctor?” Tameka Jenkins asked when it was just the two of them in the room.
“I’m sorry, Mrs. Jenkins. The cancer has spread to almost 90% of your body. Even with chemotherapy, there’s still a 99.9% chance of it coming right back. I’m sorry.”
“About how long do you think I have left?”
“If I’m being honest, you may not make it to Christmas.” Her soft sniffles could be heard from outside of the door and Derek’s heart was crushed. They’d loved each other since they were freshmen in high school and hadn’t been away from each other for more than a few hours in 16 years. How would he function without her? His son needed a mother and he most certainly needed his wife. It was too soon. God couldn’t be taking his angel this soon.
--
The bell to the cafe chimed, signaling another patron had entered the tiny space. Pastries of all kinds lined the display shelves, inviting guests to sample their sweetness. Derek Jenkins sat in a booth in the back of the restaurant, a black fedora covering his low cut fade. Smoke rose from the cup of french vanilla coffee as he clicked away on his Macbook, passing the time until his breakfast guest arrived. He’d been reluctant to take her up on her offer, seeing as how she had been trying to include herself in his activities for the last few months. It wasn’t that she wasn’t attractive, she was one of the most beautiful women he had ever seen, but looking at other women felt like he was betraying Tameka. Though it had been four years since her death, he still couldn’t bear the thought of loving another woman the way he loved her.
I’m surprised you called,” a feminine voice called, pulling him away from his campaign plan.
“I thought about what you said the other night and you’re right, it is time that I let someone in,” he stated before taking a tentative sip from the mug. Margo smiled a soft smile before taking her seat across from him. The pair talked for a few hours, bonding over their sons’ shared interest in baseball and their experiences as single parents.
“So have you heard anything from Moore?” Margo asked as she sipped her white hot chocolate.
“He called me last night, said he’d gotten a lead in the case. We’re supposed to be meeting later on to go over the details.
“Are you nervous?”
“A little, but I need closure. It’s been a year and I still don’t have the slightest clue as to who could have done it or why. I just want to know who the coward was that killed my son.” Margo reached out a hand, carefully stroking his knuckles to bring him back to the present. This was one of the reasons he didn’t like talking about David or his death. Each time the memory surfaced, he became angry. The same anger he felt when the two detectives told him that David didn’t survive the crash. His phone rang, pulling him from his wayward thoughts.
“I’m here, where are you?” he says into the receiver.
“My office, 15 minutes,” Detective Moore says before ending the call. His tone was much more gruff and aggressive than usual, which worried Derek.
“He wants me to meet him at his office, care to tag along?”
“Sure,” Margo answers, pouring her remaining cocoa into a togo cup. The pair made the short drive to Detective Moore’s downtown office and anxious to hear what he man had to say.
“After careful examination of the traffic cam footage from the night of the wreck, I finally have the identity of the driver that hit you and left.” Derek watched with wide eyes as Moore enhanced the video footage.
“Is that Senator O’Bannon?”

rafael no longer felt this was a good idea. it was a little late to take it back now that they were in hawaii, but that didn’t mean rafael was regretting it. rosie kept calling and texting him and he longed to answer the call. she may have left him at the altar, but he loved her. so much. his heart ached when he saw her name pop up on the screen again and he groaned. thumb hovered over the touch screen and, just as he was about to answer it, jessica pulled the phone from his hand. “oh, don’t do this again. let me just talk to her, jess.” rafael looked up at her and sighed. he knew she was never going to give it back to him. not when he was considering forgiving her for what she had done. there were reasons behind her actions, he was sure of it. he wanted to know what it was. he needed to know why she had left him to explain to his and her family that she was gone. his heart still ached when he thought about the look on his mother’s face.
no, he wasn’t a weak man. he wasn’t going to do this. he was stronger than this. “no. don’t give it back. i don’t want to talk to her.” jessica was probably suffering from whiplash with his moods, but rafael couldn’t decide if he wanted to talk to her or kill her. either way, jessica was by his side and that was all that was getting him through it. he would come out on the other side because he had her. the only hard thing was having everyone call them mr. and mrs. jenkins. they were on his honeymoon, it made sense. but it was painful. and they would always give him a pitying look when he said she wasn’t his wife. he was beginning to think it would be easier to just accept it, but this was jessica. that was weird. rafael rubbed his hands over his face and groaned. “i need to just forget about it all for a couple of hours, jess. please. help me forget what she did to me.” // @darlingstm - JESSICA

Worlds Collide chapters 15 & 16
Chapter 15
“Are you sure there aren’t any artifacts that can locate Stone?” Eliot and Cassandra heard Ezekiel say as they walked into the Annex.
“Not anything we have found.” Flynn said.
Eliot could see the hurt in their faces. He knew how they were feeling, not knowing what happened or where their friend was. He was feeling that way about Parker and Hardison. Eliot looked at Cassandra, took her hand, and gave it a squeeze. “If I can find my friends, we may be able to help you find your friend.” He told her.
She nodded and said to the room, “I think we should help Eliot find his friends.”
“We have to find Stone. We can send Mr. Spencer home later.” Eve said.
“But what about his friends. Do you think it is fair to him and his friends to let them think he’s dead?” Cassandra said.
“Cassandra, we should talk about this in private. Will you excuse us, Mr. Spencer?” Eve replied.
Eve grabbed Cassandra’s arm and motioned for Flynn, Ezekiel, and Jenkins to follow them up the stairs to the balcony. Once they were away from Eliot, Cassandra pulled her arm away from Eve and went to the edge of the balcony. Cassandra looked down at Eliot while Eve started talking, “Cassandra, you are not thinking straight. Just because we know Jacob is not dead, doesn’t mean he is not injured somewhere. Our priority has to be Jacob, not Mr. Spencer.”
“But what if Eliot’s friends could help? Don’t you think we should help him get home?” asked Cassandra.
“And what if his plan is to lead us into a trap? How do we know that him and his friends didn’t set up that explosion?” asked Eve.
“Eliot wouldn’t do that.” Cassandra replied.
“Cassandra, you have gotten too close to Mr. Spencer. I think you should go to your room and let us handle everything.” Eve said a little forcefully.
“No!” said Cassandra as she turned around to face Eve and the guys. “Eliot needs our help. If it was Jacob with a group of strangers wouldn’t you want them to do everything they could to help him. I am going to help Eliot with or without all of you.”
“I’m with you, Cassandra.” Ezekiel said.
“I think the Colonel is right. We have to be smart about this.” Jenkins said.
Flynn looked at Cassandra and said, “Are you sure this is what you want to do?”
“Yes. It is the right thing to do.” Cassandra replied.
Flynn gave a nod and said, “Alright, Jenkins, let’s set a door and send Mr. Spencer home.”
“Fine.” Eve said, “But we do what I say when I say. I will go through the door first with Flynn and Ezekiel. Cassandra, you stay here with Jenkins and Mr. Spencer. When we feel it is safe, we will come get you.”
“We are not fragile. We can handle ourselves. We’ve done this job for years now. And I don’t think Eliot will stay here while you go.” Cassandra said.
“Cassandra, please. We need you to stay here with Mr. Spencer. We don’t need him there and getting all emotional.” Eve said softer than she had been talking before.
“Fine. Let me go tell Eliot the plan and figure out where to set the door.” Cassandra replied. They all headed back down to Eliot.
Chapter 16
Jacob stood when Maggie came back through the door. He was wondering what happened with Nate. Nate was so angry when he saw Maggie and Jacob kissing. Jacob was left wondering why she kissed him when she followed after Nate to talk to him. “So, what did Nate have to say?” Jacob asked.
Maggie walked over to Jacob. She sits down on the bed and pats to spot next to her. Jacob sits down next to her and she softly puts her hand on his face. This can’t be good, he thinks. He looks down as she begins, “Nate has always had a problem with lots of the stuff I do.”
“Why should he care? You are divorced.” Jacob said.
“Yes, but we still care about each other. Took him forever to say ex-wife. It nearly killed him when we lost our son. I put myself into my work. Nate said you told them you are an art expert?” she said.
“Yes, I am. I have many Ph.ds and honorary degrees in art, art history, and architecture. I am one of the best. Even while working for my father in the family pipeline business, people would call me when they discovered a new piece of art and were scared because I am the best a discovering a fake.” He replied.
“I did the same thing for insurance companies and museums. It’s funny, the first time I met Eliot, he was pretending to be an art expert to get a mark. He was also shamelessly flirting with me, up until we ran into Nate. They were trying to discredit the CEO of the insurance company both Nate and I worked for a one point. I was working for the museum at the time.” She said.
“Why did they want to do that?” Jacob asked.
“It is a long story, but Nate had found a drug that might have help our son. We had run out of money and Nate went to the insurance company to pay for it. The CEO denied the claim and wouldn’t pay for it. He didn’t tell me until after I ran into them what had happened because he hated himself and didn’t want me to hate him.” She replied.
               “I’m sorry.” Jacob said.
“I am doing much better now. Nate still has issues with me seeing other people. He also has issues with Sophie and I becoming friends.” They sat in silence for a moment before Maggie continued, “I came to tell you, I’ve talked with Nate and he is willing to let you contact your friends.”
Jacob replied a bit angrier than he meant, “He’s willing to let me contact my friends.”
Maggie replied with the same tone, “He is hurting.” Then she said a little softer, “Please, don’t hold it against him.”
Jacob soften and said, “I’m sorry. I am not used to this. I understand he is hurting. I will be able to forgive him once I am able to see my friends.”
               “Thank you.” Maggie said.
“As Paulo Coelho said, Life is short. Kiss slowly, laugh insanely, love truly, and forgive quickly.” Jacob said, and he leaned in and kissed her.
Maggie stood and said, “I’m going to go see about getting you that phone.” She smiled as she leaned down to kiss him before leaving the room.
Jacob knew he couldn’t stay forever, but he truly was starting to feel like he wished he could just stay there in that moment with Maggie.

My #1 post of 2022
Sense and Sensibility 'what if?'
