Design Process under the cut ✂️

I made a post about how it was a dream of mine to print physical editions of the Penguin Classics fanfic covers I've been making for Drarry fics and Plor replied to ask me if I'd like to collaborate... thank you, Plor, for being so proactive and roping me into this 🤣 Obviously, I jumped at the opportunity!

We ended up deviating from Penguin's typography choices for the story — I much preferred Plor's type choices anyway :) But since Plor gave me the freedom to do whatever, I knew from the start that I wanted the bacover design to stay as faithful to the Penguin Classics as possible.

(Of course, I need to give my flowers to zeziliazink and bubu0h for inspiring me to post fanfic cover recs in the first place ⭐️)

I had a ton of fun adding little details while trying to stay true to the branding & design guidelines — such as changing the Penguin logo to a little boat as a tribute to the rowboat AU premise!!! Adding a "NOT FOR SALE / MADE WITH LOVE" tagline because I thought it was cute but really, any fanwork is really such a loving tribute to fandom, and I found it so special that Plor was actually binding this book. Like, that is so impressive to me!!! (also I've heard of issues where people actually sell fanbinds of fanfic they didn't write? Anyway we do not condone that...)

There is also an alternate cover, just like in my original Tumblr post!! Leyendecker's The Happy Rower on the cover is the kind of artwork that would be a Classics paperback cover, do you know what I mean? I knew I had to make an alternate version, too. I switched the cover and interior illustrations and the colorways of the boat icon — I promised Plor I'd have these printed out as paperbacks and sent to them as well so it'd be a fair trade :) It's just taking me a lot longer (so busy with work 💔) but trust that I will be annoying and post again once I've had it done 🤣

I was thinking of adding a section like "Other Titles in this Series" where I would put other fics by other authors I want to make physical copies of, but I think I will save that for another project. Hehehehe.

This is my first time collaborating with anybody from fandom and it was genuinely such a delightful experience...! Thank you, Plor, for giving me the opportunity to collaborate with you on this! Working with you was so seamless and fun. And thank you for your patience/generosity with your knowledge and for indulging all my questions about binding, haha. Thank you Citrusses for allowing us to do this with your wonderful work!!

I don't get the chance to do print design often anymore, so it was a fun way to stretch unused muscles... and I was reminded of why I enjoy design so much. I'd do this again in a heartbeat!!! ❤️‍🔥

I've been so hesitant of participating in fandom spaces because I'm not really sure of what I have to offer besides being a reader... but coming back to Tumblr in 2024, I knew that I wanted to appreciate fic writers in our visual economy (hence all the reccing lol)... I'm thankful the Drarry fandom led me to so many wonderful stories — I've discovered so many talented writers and artists!!!

Bound: Our Objective Remains Unchanged

This is a collab with @kissmypoets-hp!!! They did the cover art and also collaborated with me on the typeset using their mad InDesign skills. I did the printing and binding.

The book copy I sent to Kiss just arrived, so I can share. (I’ve promised a copy to the author too, but we’ve also been chatting collabs so we’ve agreed it will come a little later…yay!)

The fic is, of course, the amazing Oxford rowing AU by @citrusses, Our Objective Remains Unchanged.

Kiss has been making all these beautiful digital covers in the Penguin Classics style and using classic artworks for the cover image. I asked whether we could collab on making one of these into a real paperback as I was learning how to do paperback binding, and they said yes! We settled on this fic because we both love it to pieces. Harry’s characterization is so sharp and real and yet so faithful to canon even in a muggle AU. Citrusses’ world-building is rich and delicious. And her Draco is heartbreaking and perfect.

Materials:

This was not my first attempt at a paperback with a colour printed cover — the actual first is still in the mail, so remains secret — but I was definitely still working out a technique here. I wound up using a heavier print paper and having Staples do the printing, then sealing with matte Mod Podge spray acrylic.

The text block was more straightforward — just ledger quarto paper 24#, double fan bind. I printed using my home laser black printer which has some pretty big margins, so I had to set up the typeset to accommodate some bigger trims to make Kiss’s full bleed artwork work properly.

Process:

The cover was the struggle. Staples does colour prints with toner, not ink, and the toner likes to crack and flake where the paper is scored/bent. The Mod Podge helps a bit. I still had to touch up with a sharpie in places, lol. I am also still figuring out how to score and fold neatly so the spine is centered. Add to this the headache and cost and wait to get stuff printed by them, and it wound up being quite high-stakes to get the covers done this way.

I also have been following Das’s method where you clamp the glued spine of the block (pre-cover) using two strips of wood, and I think I am over-clamping because the spine is often concave when dry. Next go, I will try no clamping and see how it goes.

But! I have recently acquired a colour inkjet printer! That does wide format and borderless! And has ink tanks!!! So more paperbacks are coming for sure. Also probably some hardcovers with wraps.

All told, it was a delightful process collaborating with Kiss and I would 💯 do it again in a heartbeat. I learned so much working with them!

My longest comic about the Grand Tour so far ～♡ This time Jeremy, James and Hammond head off to Britain’s number one car show! Sadly heavy traffic and certain weather conditions give them a rough time on the road...but thank goodness it’s Friday!  *✦.°

A few words by the author (yeah, that’s me): This time my goal was to write/create/draw a sweet, funny, and heartwarming comic about the trio focused on a simple car ride. In typical fashion of all the comics I do, you won’t find any action based scenes or rude stuff (also I’m no native speaker, but you shouldn’t notice that while reading!). As a result the trio acts a lot nicer and definitely more helpful than in real Grand Tour episodes. The three guys have a super big place in my heart ♡ and because of that, once again, all I could create is something cute and adorable (I could never be mean to them!). Also not everything can be accurate, I have never been to James’s Pub, the Diddly Squat Farm Shop, inside Jeremy’s car or at a car show myself. I had a few reference photos, but 90% of this comic is drawn by memory and how I imagine environments. Anyway, I still hope that I got everyone in character, recognisable and enjoyable for you to look at! Stuff you might have missed:

On the outside of Jeremy’s farm shop you can spot Sansa and Arya, who were puppies when I started working on this comic, so I kept them that way…I am always happy when I spot a photo of the two on Jeremy’s Instagram! ♥︎

Actually everything in that comic takes part in the past, as I was working on it way too long...

Jeremy explains that it’s lucky to turn right at the start of a journey. Of course it’s from the Grand Tour Mongolia Special.

The numberplate on Jezza’s car is a pun on "Jeremy Clarkson 1 Diddly Squat Farm", in case you haven’t already noticed. I thought that’s funny.

James talks about fish finger sandwiches, he posted about them on his Twitter and FoodTribe accounts several times in the past and it’s a really nice and easy dish I like to eat as well!

The CDs in Jeremy’s glovebox are "Supertramp - Crime of the Century", "Yes - The Yes Album", "The Who - Who’s Next", "Genesis - Seconds Out", some album by Eric Clapton you cannot read and "Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon". Despite my age, these are all albums and bands I absolutely love and I think he does as well. ～♡

I had to make something up for the broken air conditioning, something like that is always happening on their journeys (especially in James’s cars!). I’m sure after the events of the comic, it was completely fine again! ^◡^

They always take photos of themselves sleeping and post it somewhere online, this time it was my chance to draw a scene of that! I enjoyed working on that one! Hehehehe...

In James’s Pub Hammond gets served Spag Bol (yeah, I have this from "Oh Cook!") and Jeremy ordered the infamous fish pie. The reason why I’ve chosen two different meals is that Richard doesn’t like fish, a running gag I keep constant in all of my comics. Also it can be taken as a reference to "The Perfect Road Trip".

James’s apron I spotted in "Lochdown", I think it really suits him! ♥︎

Title: Unpleasant Day

Lastly is "UNPLEASANT DAY" rainy at my country (Philippines).

And Spot is all wet, his umbrella is roasted and unused! due to a thunderness lightning strike going THROUGH his umbrella, next time, used a raincoat! 😆

Anyway I HAVE A STORY for all of you to share! 😁 - I just remember that were SUSPENDED CLASS, THREE TIMES, due to a Typhoon "PEDRING" last last LAST WEEK! Monday is started to rain fall, plus a bit massive wind, but the electrics are still ON even when it's very high rainy.

Then we've suspended class, said the annoucers and the PAGASA! Then on Tuesday, WE'VE BEEN BLACK OUT! Due to a HIGHLY WIND and a BIT MASSIVE RAINY! High winds can pull large tress and down fall, when I saw on the neighborhood, I noticed the tree will almost fall down! 😟 THIS IS A CALAMITY FOR ME!

I've been DOING NOTHING for a many hours and my cellphone its quite almost battery low, even the signal of cellphone is OFF! The telephone line is shut down, even our DSL is shut down. But good thing we have some radio puckets to listen the news on what's happening in our country (Philippines) and the Typhoon PEDRING! And on 10:08pm, the rainy is now a bit, and the wind is gone, once the unpleasant is gone, the electricity is on, But some others like cables for TV, DSL, and Telephone line is still OFF! And the announcement says that on Wednesday is SUSPENDED (This is the third time suspend class) in Valenzuela, etc……While the others are back to school and back to work! (heheheh Lucky for ME, I have another GOOD TIME!)

The next day, is everything CLEAR, except the disasters by typhoon "PEDRING"! I feel BOREDOM in a second, so I decided to go to the mall to hang out and play at the arcade.Then I saw my BFF is here and he's playing at the arcade! Then we've spending time to hang out after we're play at the arcade, eating while we're chatting, walking while chatting, riding on a taxi or in a train while we're chatting. And after this we're spread and went home, and Thursday is tomorrow, since typhoon "PEDRING" is now left, BACK TO SCHOOL! So I hope I enjoy my great day of SUSPENDING CLASS ( Well, except BOREDOM).

How long have you been in the CS/OUAT fandom?

I joined this beautiful fandom in the summer of 2016, so a bit late, but I made it!

When did you start shipping Captain Swan?

The moment Emma Swan held that dagger to Killian Jones' throat I knew they were something special. I really started shipping them though after their first kiss, I knew it wasn't a one time thing!

What drew you to this event?

Besides a certain someone messaging me to join? Haha I tease! So honestly, I'd been itching to do a project like this since day one. I think it's so amazing how a group of people can take this one simple idea and just expand it to all these different universes. What's even more special is we're all doing the same genre, and yet, these stories are all so different and unique and special. To be a part of that in this aspect is a blessing. Also, the people! I mean how talented are the folks doing this?? The limit does not exist! I'm in awe of everyone who's signed up, a fan of every single one of them. So to have my name in the same group is a huge honor!

What inspired your topic?

I knew I wanted to take something near and dear to my heart and add my own CS twist on it. I thought of favorite books and movies and TV shows that I loved, and how CS would fit in those media. After a lot of internal debate I went with one of my favorite shows, Moonlight. It was on for only 16 episodes, it was tragically cut down too early due to the writer's strike (go writers!!!). This show ended 10 years ago and it still resonates with me and with those that remember it. I hope to honor the show, maybe get a few people to check it out, and to give CS some new adventures. Moonlight had drama, humor, romance, angst, fluff, everything! It only seemed fitting that I now use the greatest ship there ever was and will be!

A bottle. It’s a bottle.  A mysterious bottle.

So I’ve been sucked into “end of chapter” matter with my webcomic, Akashik. A long time ago when I was doing it before, that meant less work than it does now. These days I also polish more onto the RPG game that’s attached to it.  Like creating playing cards to go with each chapter. This particular artwork I’m showing shouldn’t really be released yet, but I just kind of sauntered slowly downward into doing things way ahead of time like I do. Setting this bottle up, rendering it, etc.. that kind of stuff is fun for me. Literally hours and sometimes days of fun, without sleep at times. So much fun. Heheheh heh heh heh. I realized unless I show it off no one may ever ever see it! It’s not like Akashik is a roaring success with thousands playing the game or anything. So here. Please enjoy a glimpse of my recent work. It’s 3D. I didn’t make the model (although I do sometimes do that). Instead I spent hours creating the settings that make it look how it looks. Yes I admit the look of it kind of reminds me of The Dragon Prince. But I was doing this LONG before the Dragon Prince came out. Which means great minds think alike.   I want a bottle like this in my house. LOL. But.. .not what’s inside of it. That would be bad.

Dean frowned.

Why?

Because, Sam - although being taken on a perfectly cheesy, romantic, share-a-fucking-milkshake date - was frowning, glaring down at his hand and staring solemnly at the ketchup as if it was the one to fling him from heaven.  Dean found the whole brooding thing quite offensive, and propped one naked foot onto the booth seats and leaned further into his brother.

“Hey, uh, Mister Tall, Dark, and Handsome, what’s with the long face?”  He asked, laying his head on Sam’s shoulder and Sam gave him a passive side glance.  The demon proceeded to then have the audacity to look around the mostly empty diner, as if Dean could have possibly been speaking to someone else.

“Yeah, you - the only ‘Tall, Dark, and Handsome’ around,” when assured he had Sam’s attention, he continued, although the demon looked to still only be half listening, “I have you here on this awesomely romantic, classic milk shake date, and you’re still all this.”  And with that word he gestured to his face, to the faux grim frown, and Sam’s eyebrow quirked.

“What ever do you mean?”  Sam drawled, resting his cheek on one fist and Dean found that better than Broody-Mc-Pouty-face.

“Oh, I’m sorry, were you not here for the last thirty minutes of me babbling about how weird human toes were?  Because I was legit doing that.  Hell - you agreed to paint my nails, and to let me braid your hair you were so distracted.”  Dean said, threw one hand out in exasperation, and Sam chuckled.  Improvement, at least.

“I was just thinking on how to rid myself of one certain destroyer of my ‘bad assery’.”  Sam quoted Dean’s previous words, and Dean gave him an amused glance.

“Oh, yeah?”  Dean asked, looking up into Sam’s black eyes - he noted how Sam stopped hiding them now, and that was something that made Dean’s heart flip more times than necessary - and Sam shot him a small smirk.

“Yeah, I figured if I’m to go all out, I need to really perfect my image.”

“Dye your hair black, that’ll help.”

Sam seemed to ponder that a moment, looking up to the ceiling and Dean near giggled at the serious look of contemplation.  “There’s a thought.”  Sam finally said, stroking his chin and Dean turned onto his knees, leaning over into Dean’s lap and hands resting on Sam’s knees.

“Oh, maybe file your teeth too, get them pointy - also, why not we get you some tear drop tattoos?”

“Black lipstick?”  Sam shot back, and Dean nodded with a hissed laugh.

“Oh, yeah, absolutely.  You’ll be on everyone’s fuck list.”

“Hm…”  Sam stroked his chin again, “well if I’m going all out then shouldn’t you do so as well?”  Sam eyed him, and Dean quirked a brow.

“Aren’t I already?  I mean, look at this face - totally innocuous and trustworthy.”

“Yes, but..”  Sam leaned forward, tracing Dean’s lips and cheeks.  “Why not a little bit of pink lipstick, maybe some rosy red blush for your nose and cheeks - become a pretty princess to stand for the ‘truly good’.”  Sam quoted that, scoffing, and Dean personally felt that one.  

Seemed these days the ‘good guys’ were all sorts of assholes.

“Okay, but - then you hafta’ buy yourself a nice leather outfit, complete with chains and choker.”  Dean said, eyeing Sam and trying - and failing miserably - to picture Sam in a gaudy trench coat littered with chains and upside down crosses.

“Then you’ll have to put on a nice, frilly pink dress.”

“Fuck you, I’d look fabulous.  You’d look like a giant poser dork.”

Sam pulled a face, thought a moment, then nodded, agreeing.  “You have a point, there.”

“Course’ I do, I’m always sorta right, in case you haven’t noticed.”  Dean said, tossing an old, soggy fry at Sam’s face and laughing when the demon threw a projectile of his own - a fry that had sat out even longer than Dean’s, resting so elegantly in the liquid that steadily perspired from their milkshake.

“Oh - yes, you’ve never been wrong before - that’s why your garrison almost caught you with me when you decided going to a fucking church to have your weird fantasies play out was a good idea.”  Sam hissed through his teeth, playfully glaring down at Dean and Dean couldn’t rebuttal that one as well as he would’ve liked to.  His face flared red, ears burning and he looked to the side, glaring a moment at the lovely family seated some tables away from them.

They all looked to be having such a nice time, perfect wife, perfect husband, perfect two kids and whatever amount on the way, and Dean childishly stuck his tongue out at the youngest child when it stopped smashing it’s pancakes with grubby fingers to look at them with wide eyes.

“Hey, Dean, you know I’m messing with you, right?”  Sam said, face worried and Dean turned to look back at him with a reddened face and mix of playful hurt.

“B-but, Sammy, you know I don’t kink shame you, a-and the thought that you -” he broke off there, pitching his tone high and stuttering for effect only to have the demon give him an unimpressed curve of brow.

“You’ll have to do better than that.”  Sam deadpanned and Dean’s face instantly turned sour, puckering his lips in a pout.

“What if I cry?”

“I’ll salt your wounds.”  Sam gestured dangerously to the salt sitting all innocent like on the table and Dean gulped, flopping onto Sam’s lap fully now and finding comfort in the dark trap between table and Sam’s jean clad thighs.

“Spoil sport.”

“Kinky fucker.”

“You’re kinkier.”  Dean shot back, all childlike-eloquence, and Sam could only shrug a shoulder at that.

“You got me there.”

“Yeah, and you got me here right now, so let’s go back to discussing how exactly I’m going to braid your pretty hair.”

“I didn’t agree to that-”

“Oh, but you did, now, do you want the dutch braid, or the french braid?”

“Neither.”

Dean just grinned devilishly, because Sam had to rest his eyes sometimes - humans had some things down correctly, and sleep was pretty bad ass when you needed a break from heaven-hell politics.

And the second Sam deemed it time to take a break?  Dean would so be ready with the perfect tutorials to have Sam waking the prettiest demon of the bunch.

Heheheh first of all, thanks @woozi-my-murderous-little-fluff for tagging me, I really appreciate it! I just haven’t been able to get to this until now.
