Fandom - The Witcher (TV series)

Note that I haven't actually watched this show, I plan on watching it, but only the content that included Henry, because him getting fired for being "toxic" is total bullshit.

| How did Geralt first cross paths with you? |

• Exactly how you would expect, he saved you from being killed by a Noonwraith while trying to gather wild herbs for your elixirs.

• He'd been traveling for a fortnight, and he'd dealt with all sorts of trouble along the way. Who knew his chosen path would be so troublesome.

• The day had been relatively calm and quiet, which he was grateful for, he needed a break. Then a sound suddenly broke through the quiet, a woman's scream from further up the road.

• Geralt couldn't help the sigh that passed his lips, of course he wouldn't get to have a break from the chaos of the world. But regardless of that he urged Roach to trot faster so he could help whoever potentially needed his assistance.

• The creature had you by the wrist, trying to slash at you with its sickle, which you continuously managed to dodge in the nick of time. Another terrified scream ripping from your throat as the Noonwraith shrieked at you.

• Geralt unsheathed his sword and got to work, slaying the Noonwraith with a little bit of trouble, he was exhausted after all. All the while you had rushed around gathering the herbs you had dropped as they fought.

• "Those must be pretty important." Geralt had observed gruffly after he'd slain the Noonwraith. You ducked your head in slight embarrassment, feeling as if he was scolding you for it. He then turned to leave, not honestly expecting anything from you.

• "Wait!" You called out to him, taking a tiny step back when he turned to look at you. "Thank you... For saving me." He nodded his head without a word. "I... I don't have anything to give to you as a reward, except for a hot meal and a warm bath if you'd like."

• Considering the week he's had, that was the best reward he'd had in what felt like an eternity. But Geralt maintained his cold demeanor, and accepted the offer, following you back to your modest little cottage nestled deep in the woods.

| When did Geralts obsession start? |

• That evening when you invited him into your home, you fed him well, and explained that you are a "potion master" as you put it. After he'd finished his meal, you tended to the small injury on his forearm, then left him to tend to the small bathhouse, preparing a warm bath as promised.

• You'd mixed in a few fragrance oils and flower petals into the steaming water. Trying to make it as relaxing as you could, without being overbearing. Geralt had found it amusing when he'd realized what you'd done, but he was pleased with the claiming atmosphere that now filled the bathhouse.

• You'd left him be as he soaked, rushing off to your cellar to start working on the elixir you'd been gathering herbs for. And as he soaked he thought about you, about how tender you'd been with him, and how you'd treated him so endearingly. So much so that an onlooker would have assumed you were lovers with the way you fretted over him. It was nice.

• You'd offer him lodging after his bath, giving him your own bed, and stating you'd sleep in the upper loft. He'd tried convincing you to just let him stay in the upper loft, but you declined saying how he'd saved your life, and you intended on offering him the best comfort that you could as a reward. He accepted this offer when you sternly informed him that you wouldn't change your mind on the matter.

• So that night he lay in bed, surrounded by the scent of you, just thinking about everything that's happened in such a short time since he'd met you. You been grateful for his help, you gave him a hardy meal, a nice bath, and now let him sleep in your bed. And yet unlike so many others he's helped, you didn't want anything in return. He'd saved you, and yet you didn't request that he help you with whatever other troubles you had.

• He wondered why you'd been so desperate to gather those herbs that you'd risk crossing paths with a Noonwraith. Let alone why you were intent on collecting them all again as he fought the creature, not even waiting until he'd slain it, or given up on gathering them all together.

• He wondered why you lived all the way out here, seemingly all alone deep in the woods. How you managed to survive your day to day life. You had few animals, and no crop fields, only a simple garden. And yet you seemed to be living comfortably, he'd seen nothing to suggest you had much wealth, but you weren't miserable like so many others he's met.

• His obsession started growing from the moment you'd welcomed him into your home. And as the day progressed and his curiosity peaked that obsession grew. You were a mystery to him, and with how kind you'd been to him he found himself smitten before the night was even out. Making his departure that morning an unwanted but necessary venture, so he'd left before the sun had risen, and while you still slept.

| Does Geralt try wooing you in a healthy way before snapping? And how does he do it? |

• He didn't stay away for very long, showing up one evening with a large gash on his arm, hoping you'd assist him. You of course rushed to do so, gathering healing herbs, cleaning and dressing the wound, and assuring him that he was more than welcome to rest at your home until he was well again.

• You'd offered him your bed again, stating it was more comfortable, and would be much easier for him to get to than the upper loft with his arm injury. This time however he wouldn't let you do that, and when you argued against it, he'd suggest that if he'd struggle with the ladder leading to the loft, that you could simply assist him.

• You'd thought about it for a moment, and eventually agreed with a heavy sigh, knowing you couldn't convince him otherwise. And that's what ended up happening, he struggled with the ladder, and you quickly rushed to place yourself directly behind him on the ladder, allowing him to lean against you as he slowly climbed up, following his pace patently.

• He was larger than you, but that didn't stop you from doing whatever you could to help him. And Geralt came to realize pretty quickly that that's just how you are, always trying to help in anyway you can without expecting anything in return. That made his obsession grow of course, no one had really ever been that way with him, so the feeling was addictive.

• Witchers heal much father than regular men, and combined with the healing herbs you'd used, his arm was completely healed by morning. And Geralt was intent on repaying your kindness, subconsciously hoping it would woo you the way your kindness had wooed him.

• In doing so Geralt worked on many chores around your homestead. Chopping wood, feeding your animals, repairing the damage he'd noticed to your home, even going out and hunting some game for you, which he later skinned and cured for you. Because of how much he was intent on doing for you, he had stayed with you for a few days.

• He would offhandedly praise your beauty, and often praised your skill crafts. He'd offered a helping hand with some of your elixirs, and went out and found some of the more rare ingredients you'd gotten low on. Most of which were only found in dangerous places. He assisted with cooking as well, and made as much small talk with you as he could.

| What happens when you politely reject Geralt for another man? |

• He'd learned so much about you in such a short time, and he found his heart felt lighter at the mere thought of you. So he decided he'd take a chance with you, feeling as if he'd never be the same without you in his life. He'd grown to love and adore you in so many ways, you were all he dreamed of, all he could think of, he needed you to be his.

• That evening after cleaning up after dinner, Geralt had taken a chance, and cupped your face between his hands. You looked at him with curiosity, then a surprised gasp escaped you when he suddenly kissed you. He all but melted into the kiss, but you remained stagnant, eventually pushing on his chest to get him to stop when he didn't seem to notice your lack of enthusiasm.

• He of course released you in an instant, worry and confusion etched onto his face. You then sheepishly explained that you were already betrothed to another, and you wouldn't accept his advances. You also explained that those elixirs that were so important for you to make were actually meant for your betrothed, who was suffering from a ailment you couldn't cure, but at the very least you could slow its progression.

• So you'd rejected him for a dying man... That hurt, much more than he'd ever admit. So he'd left without saying much, he needed to think, he needed to get away and let out his heartache. Which came out of him in a fit of rage as he brutally slain some bandits that he later crossed paths with.

| How bad will things get when Geralt does finally snap & become Yandere? |

• It's all he can think about anymore, you'd rejected him for a dying man, someone weak and unworthy of you. And his obsession starts taking a dark turn as that thought consumes him, and he allows that pent up rage to take over from time to time, which usually resulted in bloodshed.

• Eventually he finds his way back to your cottage, but he doesn't make his presence known to you. Instead he watches you from a distance, and follows you as you make your weekly trip to your betrotheds home. A basket containing the vials filled with your most powerful healing elixir hanging from your arm.

• The stone home was shabby, and in Geralts mind a pitiful excuse for a home. The dense woods surrounding it allowing Geralt plenty of cover to hide behind. And later into the evening, still early enough so you would get home before the sun went down, you'd left with an empty basket and a promise to return soon.

• Geralt stayed where he'd been hiding until the sun had set, and he knew you were long gone. Then he made his way into the stone home, breaking the door down in order to enter. Inside sitting at the table was a sickly man who wasn't nearly half the size of Geralt. He'd been eating salted meat and bread, a coughing fit taking hold of him as Geralt entered.

• The sudden of it all clearly terrifying the sick man, who through his coughing pleaded for his life. Geralt ignored him and walked around the little home, finding the vials of your elixir on the table beside the shabby bed. "Who are you?" The man asked once his coughing subsidized, Geralt looked to him with dark uncaring eyes.

• "You're the Witcher that saved (Y/n)." He realized quickly. That made Geralt smirk as he shoved the bedside table over, the vials breaking as they hit the stone floor. "What are you doing!?" He'd asked in a panic. "Cutting loose ends." Geralt stated calmly before leaving the man behind, knowing that without the elixir he'd die slowly, painfully, and all alone.

• That night Geralt showed up on your doorstep, a dark aura about him, making you nervous. Despite this nervousness however, you foolishly opened your home to him. And Geralt took full advantage of that, making it much easier for him to steal you away and runaway into the darkness. No one would ever come looking for you, and on such dangerous roads you'd never dare trying to run away from him.

| So what kind of a Yandere is Geralt? |

• Obsessive, possessive, jealous, and manipulative. He adores you, and he wants you all to himself. He's greedy and he'll kill anyone that might come between you, finding cleaver ways to cover the murder up.

• He would never harm you physically, but he will break you mentally. Then he will mold and reshape you into his perfect little obedient lover. You will love him the way he loves you, sooner or later, with or without the help of magic or potions.

• He will remind you constantly that without him you would be dead, that without him you would be nothing but meat for the crows. Sometimes he'll test you and pretend to leave without you in the night, if you run he will find you and punish you, if you cry out for him, he will come to you in an instant.

• Punishments from Geralt are usually being denied food and water for an extended period of time. Other times he'll make you walk as he rides Roach, and he won't allow you to take a break, making you walk for several days at times. Sometimes it'll be as simple as denying you things like, the warmth of the fire on a cold night, or a bedroll, leaving you to sleep on the hard icey forest floor.

• However when you are good Geralt is very tender and sweet with you. Making sure you are well sated and hydrated. Holding you lovingly in his arms as you ride together, his arms around your hips as you practically sat in his lap. Keeping you warm and comfortable on chilly nights, cuddling with you by the fire on a fairly comfy bed he'd made with things from the forest.

• When it's just you two he's easier to keep satisfied, simply do as he asks, do not fight him, praise him as often as he praises you, and never try running away.

• When others are around he's much harder to keep satisfied, as his jealousy knows no bounds, anyone and everyone is a threat in his eyes. So it's best just to stick with him, particularly right up against his side, with his arm around your shoulders reminding everyone you are his.

| Is Geralt worried anyone will find out? |

• Not in the slightest bit. Before ever taking you anywhere near other people, Geralt broke you to the point where you wouldn't try running away, or beg anyone to help you.

• In the beginning of it all he would chat with Roach about you, and as time went on, and he became more and more obsessed and deranged, he would loose his hold on morality of the situation, talking about it all allowed him to accept it much easier.

• If anyone tries to ever take you away because they know something is wrong, they'll vanish from town without a trace, along with the witcher and his female companion. You'll both become a ghost story in most of the settlements you pass through.

• Geralt is very good at manipulating people, and if that doesn't quite work he'll try to intimidate them, though it's rare but if that also fails then he'll simply kill them and anyone else that might get in his way.

• And considering how long you've been on the road now, he knows your betrothed is long dead, and you didn't have any family left, or any friends. No one knows who you are or where you came from except for him. No one cares about you anymore except for him, and he's sure to remind you of that fact until he's achieved breaking you completely into submission.

| What happens when/if you are ever hurt? |

• It was bound to happen sooner or later no matter how hard he might try to prevent it. You travel all over dangerous lands, and stay on the sidelines as he slays any beast or men that poses a threat. He really should have allowed you a dagger, or at least hide you somewhere safe when working a contract.

• He'd heard your panicked scream when one of the wolves managed to get passed him and corner you. It was as if his heart had been ripped from his chest, and the world was moving in slow motion. In reality he'd spun on his heel in an instant and thrown a knife into the wolfs throat before it could do anymore harm to you.

• He dispatched of the rest of the wolves, and rushed to your side as you sit on the ground, leaning against a tree and cradling your bleeding leg. He'd been making you wear trousers, as they were easier for you to travel in, but now he wished you'd had a dress on, as it would have been easier to get to the gash without causing you anymore pain.

• But that wasn't the case, so Geralt had to unlace the pants and pull them down until he can reach the gash. Cleaning it and dressing it as best he could, even taking advice from you when you told him what herbs would be best. Afterwards he pulled the pants back up as gently as he could, and pulled you up into his arms.

• After finding a safe place in the woods, Geralt set up a large camp. Somewhere for you to rest until your leg was healed, and where you would later train with a sword. He wouldn't make this mistake again, so he will make sure you can protect yourself properly if he cannot. While your leg is injured he would carry you everywhere, or let you ride Roach while he walked beside you to catch you if you fell.

| Is Geralts obsession in any way sexual? |

• In the very very beginning it wasn't sexual to him, you were to pure in his mind in the very beginning. But as time goes by, his love blooms into desire, which will deepen as his obsession grows, and even more so when he sees you bathe after he's taken you captive. He had to make sure you wouldn't run, and sometimes he couldn't help but look at you.

• He may be yandere and at times cruel, but he will not force himself onto you. Not for a kiss or anything else. Even when he wants to cuddle at night, he lets you initiate it, which due to the cold you did so often even when you were still fighting against him.

• But when you finally give into him, and begin to see his love and begin to love him in return. He's like a starved beast, everything is so fierce and intense, yet he is still gentle with you, knowing if he took it to far he could seriously hurt you, and that's the last thing he'd ever want.

• No one and I mean no one but Geralt can see your naked body. Not even the female maids you cross paths with in castles or keeps. If you need assistance in the bath or with your clothes Geralt will be the only one to help you. If someone barges in while you're in a compromising situation, he'll dispose of them for ever looking at what is for his eyes and his eyes alone. Doesn't matter to him who it is, and this could really prove to be a problem if it's someone of great importance.

• He's addicted to your taste, from the taste of your kisses, to the taste if your dripping pussy. Geralt would spend all day and night with his head buried between your thighs if you allowed him to. By the time he's finished with you, he'll be the only god you'll ever pray to.

• Geralt also fucking loves watching you ride his cock, and he doesn't care where you are when you do it. In the woods, an inn, a castle or keep, doesn't matter in the slightest. I've been attempting to shift since 2020, during the pandemic and my own personal crisis that made that year likely the most miserable point in my life. I have not yet shifted, but I have come very close, especially recently.

I have looked at dates of books and fics published and found barely anything before 2019. thank you and apologizes for bringing it up

hi hello! please don't apologize, i bitch about the show but i really am fond of it in a "monster hunter named geralt and his singing buddy that pals around with him while they have adventures" sense. i just pretend it isn't supposed to be sourced from the books!

i am super new to this fandom (comparatively i think lmao - i got into it in like january of 2024) so i'm sure there are people with way more background knowledge than me - but no, i think it was a Thing before then, just not nearly as much of a Thing. the show made it way easier/more accessible for people - both actors are beautiful (whereas game geralt isn't everyone's cup of tea and book geralt is up to the reader's imagination outside of some descriptions), costuming is way less silly than in games/books, and joey batey's jaskier looks at geralt like the sun rises and sets on him in a way that book dandelion doesn't really (they love each other & are fond of each other but jaskier is imo an entirely different character and it is definitely for his benefit lmao). also, dandelion's penchant for chasing skirts is alluded to but not nearly as explicit on the show, which i think makes it a lot easier for people to direct his romantic attentions towards geralt.

but! it's mostly that show witcher fans and book witcher fans are just very very different groups of people. the books are long and there are a bunch of them, which a lot of people just don't have time for, and from what i've been able to tell on places like r/wiedzmin it feels like the demographics skew heavily male, which don't tend to be the kind of media consumers that write fic, let alone m/m fic; meanwhile the show is significantly easier to consume because it's visual and a very simplified version of the actual story - i'm like 30k into a fic right now and when i tell you the fucking timeline is killing me i MEAN IT - and that means there's a lot less pressure to write fic for it. plus like i said in the opening paragraph of this absurdly long answer, the show is very easy to create fic for when you think of it as two handsome dudes roaming the countryside killing monsters and shacking up in lots of inns where there's only one bed.

I wanted to share the new "Kill Me Not" Collection:

This collection centers around the "Non-Human & Witcher" trope. I'd like to invite you to contribute if this trope inspires you:

It can be anything from fluff to angst. Although originally the idea was angst based (hence the Kill Me Not title), I've decided to open it to interpretation, because i just love the trope in general.

The main prompt circles around:

Character A is hiding being non-human, due to being scared of being killed by a Witcher, who is character B.

But can be interpreted however you'd like. [maybe Witcher knew all along? Maybe Witcher contemplates killing them and ends in a moral dillema?]

We're currently making up the rules as we go a bit.

Hey, I love all of your witcher book/show/game difference analyses and canon vs fandom posts! Aside from Valdo and Aiden do you think any other minor characters in the canon source material will become more developed in fandom (maybe to a lesser extent)? I feel like Linus Pitt has some potential and we get a decent glimpse of his personality on the boat ride in Blood of Elves. Curious to hear your thoughts on this as well!

You know, that is such a crap shoot. The supporting and minor characters are (naturally) the ones they change the most, and then on top of that, so much depends on the actor. I feel like it is impossible to tell.

But you know who what extremely minor character we see only twice and who we know nothing about, that I would ABSOLUTELY FUCKING KILL to see, both in the show and in fic? Black Rayla. That woman is goddamn epic. Her actions are dark as fuck. But holy damn is her 'final stand' scene iconic as hell.

I mean, seriously, even for the people who have zero context, just read this scene and tell me it isn't amazing!!

Rayla and her men are surrounded by Scoia'tael. She has promised to kill her comrades before they fall into the hands of the elven commandos, because they are notorious for torturing captives. They are losing. Her comrade, Villis, has just fallen but is only wounded.

"Rayla!" he screamed "you promised!"

The mercenary, dispatching another elf, swung around.

"Farewell Villis," she said, placing the point of her sword beneath his sternum and pushing hard, "see you in hell!"

A moment later, she stood alone. The Scoia'tael encircled her from all sides. The soldier, smeared with blood from head to foot, raised her sword, whirled around and shook her black plait. She stood among the elves, terrible and hunched like a demon.

The elves retreated.

"Come on!" she screamed savagely. "What are you waiting for? You will not take me alive! I am Black Rayla!".

Then when they tell her to throw down her sword...

"The mercenary laughed horribly and and wiped her face with her cuff, smearing sweat mixed with dust and blood.

"My sword costs too much to be thrown away, elf!" she cried. "If you want to take it you will have to break my fingers! I am Black Rayla! What are you waiting for?"

One of the most exciting and emotional battle scenes, and given that we don't even know her, and she isn't a hero either, that's an amazing feat.

Other than her, I would love to see Keira Metz with her 'severe male clothing' and her brass fucking knuckles. She deserves more prominence too, and will hopefully make a splash in the fandom.

As to your suggestion, Linus Pitt is so much goddamn fun. His scene with Geralt is one of my all time favorites. Please indulge me because I am going to talk about his scene for the people reading who do not know him.

For those who haven't read Blood of Elves, Linus Pitt is an Oxenfurt Master Tutor of Natural History, who Geralt meets aboard a ship. Geralt has been hired to be on the ship to protect them from a potential monster attack. (An Aeschna, as Geralt calls it)

Master Linus is SUPER enthusiastic about biological classification of monsters and wants to pump Geralt for information. It turns out, Linus's book learning differs SIGNIFICANTLY from Geralt's real life experience. (ain't that the way it goes)

He provides such a fantastic opportunity to explore Geralt's ethics, his sense of humor, and to get a more in depth glimpse of how others see him. I love contrasting Geralt, a highly practical working man with a ton of real world experience, with academics and their theories and conceptual ethics.

And Geralt 's dynamic with Linus, and the way he just teases the hell out of him is hilarious. They first get off on the wrong foot, because the scholar insists that the aeschna do not exist, and he laments Geralt's lack of scientific specificity in his monster naming conventions.

So Geralt goes full strength Geralt sarcasm. It is glorious.

For moment, both men saw a twenty-pound or more specimen of the king pickerel swallowing a dead rat...

"What was that?" The Master Tutor shuddered.

"I don't know," Geralt looked at the sky. "A penguin, maybe?"

Bahahahaha. And Linus knows he's being made fun of.

"I have been told that witchers possess considerable knowledge about some rare species. But you, you not only repeat rumours and tales, but you are also mocking me in a most crude manner...are you listening to me at all?"

The Master Tutor "pouts" and bites his lips, and stares at Geralt quite a bit.

Geralt's continued sarcasm drips from the page.

"Enlighten me, Master Tutor, expound a little upon your knowledge of aquatic predators..."

"Are you making fun of me?"

"Not at all. I would honestly like to fill the gaps in my education."

But then when Linus goes on and on, then pauses, asking Geralt if he wants to add anything, Geralt is like:

"...I'm listening with bated breath."

Linus is suspicious, but chatters on. Geralt finally interrupts him to correct him. Linus objects to this...

"Indeed, your lack of knowledge disappoints me. Truly, I am amazed--"

To which Geralt replies with...

"I know," interrupted Geralt. "I lose a great deal of my charm when one gets to know me better. Nevertheless, I will permit myself to correct your theories a little further..."

Wilting sarcasm, weaponized self deprecation of questionable sincerity, and monster nerdery....this is full strength Geralt, firing on all cylinders. God I love him.

And of course Linus begins to listen to him, and heed his warnings. He learns quickly that Geralt has the superior knowledge. And Linus's extreme passion for science and monsters is so entertaining and endearing.

When Geralt is actually in the water fighting with the monster, Linus is shrieking out scientific information to 'help' him.

"It's an anthropod! Order Amphipoda! Group Mandibulatissimae!"

Geralt violently thrashed his arms in the water, trying to yank his legs from the aeschna's claws as they pulled him towards the rhythmic snap of its jaws. The Master Tutor was correct once again. The jaws were anything but small.

Then of course Linus is like TRANSCENDENT with joy to 'discover' a new monster and wants to name it after Geralt. Geralt begs him not to and he consents to name it something else. (ETA because @ithoughtitwaspronouncedgeralt SO RIGHTLY points it out. Geralt insists Linus name the monster after a little boy on the ship who is like NONSTOP a brat. XD)

It's just goddamn classic witcher. Amazing. Hilarious. No notes.

Okay so this season kinda just pissed me off? For like a lot of reasons. Mainly that half of it makes no sense? I'll fluctuate between hating and loving things cuz there is a lot to love but also a lot to criticize

Let's start with one thing that I haven seen many people talk about and that's the witchers themselves?

So like in the finale a bunch of them die from like 3 monsters. THREE? Geralt defeated 2 of them without drinking his little potion yet everyone else got recked while on the potion? That makes no sense at all. Like Geralt isn't that OP and witchers in general aren't that weak? Like it took a whole army of monsters to diminish witchers in nightmare of the wolf? And it took 3 to take 10ish Witchers down?

Also Ciri is possessed and their medallions didn't ring? At all? And before someone goes it's cuz she's possessed and not a monster but it ringed when eskel got possessed? Sure Jan.

Ciri herself maybe it's just the directing but it didn't really make me feel anything for her? Could just be me but I feel like it didn't make me feel as sorry for her as I should've.

Moving on to Francesca and Fringillas story line. Only real quick

If Francesca had the power to pull a whole prince of Egypt killing everyone's first Borns and what not that energy would be better spent killing human army's? Not a bunch of babies? Like girl use your brain

okay memes aside I wouldn't have actually minded if it just made sense. Like yes there was buildup between season 1 and season 2 of her like vilgefortz, but her betraying her babies FOR HIM? YEAH NO... Like that scene with Triss where he yells at her nope.

It makes no sense too because she's literally one of the oldest people on the continent? Like she should be able to theoretically see through the BS? Like dude had SUS written on his forehead? He literally smashed a dudes head in? (Mainly the fandom seems to have forgotten that). Maybe it's just cuz I know book spoilers and I know in the book he laughs at her b4 well ya know... So I personally think Lauren is trying Todo this whole one-sided romance so when she.......(I'm not saying if you know you know) it's partially cuz of heartbreak and yada yada.

But overall it just feels like they dumbed down her character this season? Like her thing is hard on the outside soft on the inside and willing to do anything for her students? And she just kinda crumbles this season. If she still thought yennefer was dead that might make more sense? But that's not the case?

Honestly if they were going to pair her off with someone I think Vesemir would've been a better choice just logically? Maybe that's just me..

But yeah pairing her off with vilgefortz just rubbed me the wrong way, as she's supposed to be as rock solid as Vesemir. And if Lauren is going to stick her in a shitty relationship for some sort of narrative element yeah no...

Also her at the end putting a bounty on Ciri? And everyone who protects her? That just felt weird? Made no sense? People are making theories she's playing a long con but I think it's just bad writing

I wanna ship cloqwork because I like their character dynamic, but at the same time I get uncomfortable because when Qrow enrolled at Beacon (at "the right age," as specified by Raven) he would've been 17 - legally not an adult. Ozpin would've had a disproportionate amount of power over him, both as a legal adult and as his teacher.

I apologize in advance that this response is probably going to be all over the place. I’ve got a lot of thoughts about this and very little ability right now to put them into a cohesive order. So we’re just chucking it all out lol.

First, there’s absolutely no need to apologize for being on anon. That’s what it’s there for! I think tumblr has developed a view of the anonymous option that, on the whole, isn’t particularly useful. In our efforts to call out those who are sending flames/hate under the comfort of anonymity (which you obviously are not), there’s no need for anyone to “prove” themselves by going off of it. You’re using anon because you (justifiably) fear how the fandom might react to these questions. I often use anon because I abandoned my “main” account years ago and dislike sending messages from it. There’s a huge range of reasons why someone might want to be on anon and ultimately it doesn’t matter why we use the tool that’s been provided to us. It’s there, so never feel bad about going anon for any reason :)

Onto the ozqrow! Or yes, onto the cloqwork. I learned “ozqrow” first so it’s pretty embedded in my head, but I agree that “cloqwork” is the more sophisticated of the two ;) Anyway, yes. There are potentially ways that we can view the relationship as unhealthy… with the key word there being potentially. AKA, as headcanons. No, Qrow wouldn’t have been an adult when he entered Beacon, but who’s to say a relationship began then? Some fans might like to imagine that despite the real world issues attached. Others—like you and me—would not. The important thing is that we both have the space to achieve whatever interpretation of the relationship we please. Far as I can tell, Qrow is 37 at the youngest. Four years at Beacon (17-20), 15 years after Summer’s death (35), and then roughly 2 years of in-canon present time (37). Realistically, he’s probably older than that. Based on the relationship dynamics it seems that Tai didn’t date Summer until he broke up with Raven and given Yang’s age compared to Ruby’s, that adds two years. So Qrow is probably around 39. Even that’s assuming that Raven had Yang right after Beacon. If she didn’t we could push the timeline another year or two, putting Qrow in his early 40’s. I lay all this out to demonstrate that… that’s a lot of time. How old “should” Qrow be before he enters a relationship with someone? Obviously that answer differs from individual to individual, but let’s say for the sake of argument that he should be at least 25. That puts him 5 years out of Beacon, potentially older than when Raven had Yang, and roughly 6 years older than most of our main ships right now (Blake/Yang, Jaune/Pyrrha, Ren/Nora etc.) where fans argue very strongly that at 19 they’re already adults and are able to make informed decisions, be it about relationships or world-shattering secrets. So we’re already holding Qrow to stricter standards than other characters and that still leaves roughly 15 years for him and Ozpin to start something, all of which is time that takes place outside of the Teacher/Student dynamic. It’s a choice to prioritize “But he was his headmaster for 4 years” over “But they were equals for 2 decades.”

Now granted, there’s more to this relationship than just Qrow’s own age. I’ve also seen people bring up the age gap and, more recently, Ozpin’s “manipulation” of Qrow. In regards to the former, we simply have to acknowledge that Ozpin is screwed in that regard. Everyone is younger than him. Almost the entire cast. At some point nearly everyone we meet will have, at some point, been a child while Ozpin is an adult simply by virtue of Ozpin being a reincarnating wizard who has already lived at least a thousand years. The only exceptions to this are Salem, the Gods, or Jinn, all of which are more “problematic” partners to my mind. Which again, isn’t to say no one can ship them together, just that it seems ridiculous to me that—if we’re really going to “justify” an in-canon relationship—we’d prioritize “Salem and Ozpin are the same age that’s so much healthier!” over “Salem abused Ozpin, killed their kids, and has hunted him for years on end. That’s... kind of not great!” It’s a matter of what parts of each relationship we choose to emphasize. And ozqrow is far from the only ship to grapple with this. In the witcher fandom I adore both Geralt/Jaskier and Geralt/Regis. Both of those ships have “issues” in regards to age. Is Jaskier not allowed to be with Geralt because he’s in his 30s and Geralt is in his 80s? Is Geralt not allowed to be with Regis because he’s in his 80s and Regis is in his 400s? When we talk about fantasy series we’re talking about species/races/abilities that are, obviously, fantastic. They don’t exist. Which means that real world concerns can’t perfectly map onto these scenarios. The question is not “Is a 1,000 year age gap problematic?” but rather “Are these both consenting adults who are in a position to make their own informed, romantic decisions?” To which we answer for ozqrow: yes. Unless we specifically imagine that the relationship began when Qrow was just a student but again, that’s purely headcanon. Emphasizing that non-canonical imagining of how a relationship might have started over the canonical years of working together as equal peers makes no more sense than going, “Yeah but there was a time when Regis was an adult and Geralt was just a kid, so if they’d met then it would have been super unhealthy so you shouldn’t ship them :/” They didn’t meet when Geralt was a kid. In the same way, Ozpin and Qrow didn’t start a relationship when Qrow was a kid for the simple reason that they have no canonical romance at all. That puts the power entirely in the viewers’ hands to imagine when/how such a relationship occurs. 

Which leaves us with second issue mentioned: power dynamics and Ozpin’s “manipulation.” Take everything said above and apply it to this point too. That power dynamic only exists if we imagine a relationship while they’re headmaster and student. Which you can! Plenty of people want to write/read about such “problematic” stuff. That’s partly what fandom is for. But again, if that’s not your cup of tea there’s no reason to prioritize those 4 years over the 20 years we get later. I have heard some people say that the relationship is indefinitely imbalanced because of Ozpin’s age/power/leadership/whatever but… that simply makes no sense to me. Or rather, it seems hypocritical. Does that mean it’s “problematic” for Weiss to be with Ruby? After all, Ruby is the leader of their team and calls all the shots. What if Weiss feels like she can’t say no to her?? It’s terribly unhealthy. Does that mean Weiss can’t be with Blake? She was racist, after all, and comes from such a place of privilege. I’m not sure Blake is educated enough to hold her own with Weiss. Does this mean Blake can’t be with Yang? Blake comes from a very rich and powerful family whereas Yang is just a country girl… what if Blake uses that power against her somehow? Does that mean that Nora can’t be with Ruby? Or again, Weiss with Ruby? I mean, Nora is homeless and Weiss has been cut off from the Schnee line, so they might stay in a relationship purely out of fear of being abandoned--super unhealthy. These are all revised versions of things I’ve heard applied to ozqrow: Qrow shouldn’t be with Ozpin because Ozpin is his leader (Ruby/Weiss), because Qrow grew up in an “uneducated” tribe whereas Ozpin is clearly so sophisticated (Blake/Weiss), because Ozpin has power and connections that Qrow could never match (Blake/Yang), because Ozpin is tied to the life Qrow has built and breaking up supposedly threatens that. Which means he can’t ever break up. Which means Qrow is trapped. Which means it’s unhealthy (Nora/Ruby or Ruby/Weiss). They’re all warped, assumption based arguments that are only taken seriously when they’re applied to a ship that people are already inclined to dislike. The takeaway is that every relationship has power dynamics and every relationship has the potential to be “problematic.” Literally everyone. Give me any two people and I can spin some yarn about how one holds too much power over the other for the relationship to be healthy. Which isn’t to say that real power dynamics don’t exist that should be avoided (like a teacher/student relationship as you point out), only that fans are inclined to extend that past the point of logic in an effort demonize ships they don’t like. Someone having trauma in their past (which, again, is everyone at this point in the series) is not the same “power dynamic” as an adult grooming a child (which, again again, Ozpin didn’t do). So when we’re left with the acknowledgement that any relationship has the potential to be unhealthy, we have to ask… is it? And the answer is no. As you say, “We all know that canonically Ozpin ISN’T that kind of person.” That’s what trumps every headcanon and negative assumption. I could headcanon/assume that a Weiss/Blake relationship would be horrific because Weiss would be a racist ass to Blake and Blake would only stay with her because she’s determined not to “run away” from something again… but we don’t see evidence for that on screen and it literally never happens. In the same way, some fans like to headcannon/assume that a Qrow/Ozpin relationship would be horrific because Ozpin would use his power over Qrow in various ways… but we don’t see evidence for that on screen and it literally doesn’t happen. 

If anything, post-Volume 6 I’d say there’s more of a potential problem with Qrow being with Ozpin. Meaning yes, as you point out Qrow has a lot of stuff in his past that makes him potentially vulnerable—toxic family environment, drinking problem, etc.—but we learn irrevocably in Volume 6 that so does Ozpin. He was manipulated by the Gods into accepting this “impossible” task. He was in an abusive relationship with Salem and, quite literally, didn’t survive it. He’s lived a thousand years of unimaginable trauma. He arguably was also an alcoholic at one point given the drinking we saw in Jinn’s flashback. He’s been betrayed time and time again by his allies… of which Qrow is a part. Arguably Ozpin has even more vulnerabilities than Qrow but both characters are in a position to hurt one another with those vulnerabilities: Ozpin could play on Qrow’s desire for family and Qrow could play on Ozpin’s need for support. That “could” is, again, important because it’s mostly headcanon speculation that chooses to see the relationship as inevitably negative… with the exception that canonically Qrow is the only one who we see using these vulnerabilities against Ozpin. The fandom likes to assume that Ozpin “manipulated” Qrow all these years but we simply never see that happening. In true RWBY fashion, RT gave Qrow a very damning sounding line—I gave up my life for you—and then let the fandom assume really negative connotations. In reality though what that line translated to was, “You trusted me despite the fact that I entered your school to learn how to kill you and your allies, then taught me how to be a better person and gave me a purpose in life: to help others, even if I’ve now learned I can’t fix it all in one lifetime.” Like yeah, what kind of horrible “manipulation”?? Ozpin’s supposed power over Qrow has only helped and benefited Qrow, despite how Volume 6 tried to paint that relationship as suddenly negative. What is said doesn’t align with what we’ve seen. In contrast, we do see Qrow using Ozpin’s vulnerabilities against him. He does betray him. He does punch him into a tree. He does help perpetuate those same lies to Ironwood. He does absolve Ruby without offering the same to Ozpin. He does then plant the seed—with absolutely no evidence—that he had a hand in Summer’s death. To be frank, Qrow has treated Ozpin like shit lately and it’s one of the (many) reasons why I hate Volume 6 and 7. Ozpin is coded as the perpetrator, but we never see him taking advantage of Qrow. Meanwhile, Qrow is coded as the victim, but we do see him taking advantage of Ozpin’s vulnerability. One character has helped the other flourish, the other has abandoned him in his greatest time of need. Right now I’d argue that the in-canon ship potential is “problematic” due to Qrow… but that doesn’t mean any of that has to impact fandom shipping. For me personally, I prefer to keep to Volume 1-5 material or AUs up until Qrow (hopefully) apologizes for his actions. Then I might feel inclined to write canon-based ozqrow content for Volume 8, or whenever we re-establish that respect (with AU elements involving giving Ozpin his own body. The Oscar situation is a whole other thing I’m not going to delve into here. Suffice to say, I’m considering Qrow and Ozpin as separate people right now). But even if they never make up, even if Qrow, or Ozpin, or both of them end up being completely toxic for one another, that doesn’t stop anyone from imagining something better for them in fandom. Fandom is transformative for a reason.

All of which isn’t to say that people have to like the ship (obviously) only that in the same vein it means that no one has to justify liking the ship either. Again, for me personally, I usually need some in-canon, healthy dynamic to work with in order to enjoy a ship. It’s why I love ozqrow because we did see that for 5 volumes and may indeed see it again. In contrast, it’s why I don’t love pairings like Yen/Geralt or Bakugo/Izuku because I don’t feel like I have a healthy foundation to work from and, for me, a healthy foundation is usually necessary (with some exceptions like my childhood love of Erik/Christine). But all those are preferences. They don’t—and shouldn’t—dictate anyone else’s enjoyment. Which is the problem when people don’t just assume that ozqrow is inherently unhealthy (which I hope I’ve somewhat helped to disprove here) but likewise assume that that’s necessary for anyone else to ship them. For you that potential coding of teacher/student and power dynamics might outweigh otherwise liking their dynamic and that’s fine! That’s a preference! But a preference doesn’t give anyone the right to throw shade at others for enjoying something different. 

Which finally brings me back to the hypocrisy in all this. Ozqrow (and Blake/Yang) are the only ships I’ve come across in this fandom where the fans have to continually “prove” why their ships are valid. Not as potentially canonical relationships, but just as fandom-based ships. Just as fictional preferences we enjoy as a hobby. It says something about the fandom’s bias that we can watch Ilia, on screen, be one of the bad guys, kidnap Blake, try to murder her parents, try to ship her off to her abuser… and despite all this the fandom went, “Oh yeah. I could see them together.” But Ozpin and Qrow, who have supported one another for the vast majority of the series, suddenly need to provide receipts for how healthy their relationship is and if you don’t do a good enough job proving that, it’s cancelled. That’s messed up. None of these ships are “bad.” Ilia/Blake shippers should go wild with that potential! It’s just an issue of comparison and applying different, rigged standards to certain ships. This is a fandom where people ship the heroes with the likes of Cinder, Roman, Raven, Ilia, Salem, Tyrian… tons of killers and would-be killers, characters who have done objectively horrifying things. But it’s when two loving adult men might get together that it’s suddenly too “problematic”? That says more about that bias than it does the ship. For you, anon, if I’ve failed to alleviate those concerns and that coding means ozqrow isn’t really your thing? Great! You can drop the ship, involve yourself only in AUs, or anything in between. That’s how fandom should work. The problem lies not in asking polite questions about how we might interpret a relationship in canon (which as said in the original reblog I greatly enjoy doing!) but rather in some fans’ tendency to demand a moral standard from a ship that none other is held to and then when fans inevitably fail to meet that standard, they’re criticized for daring to like the ship in the first place. Ultimately whether you end up shipping/liking ozqrow is up to you—which is precisely where the power should be. In your hands, not the hands of someone on tumblr trying to make others feel guilty.

Valdo would never admit it aloud but Jaskier de Lettenhove had figured out something genius when he took up with Geralt of Rivia. It was a formula for success, staying with a person who could both keep you safe and keep you in stories that would enchant all around. Taking that formula and adding his own immeasurable talent would lead to riches and fame beyond Jaskier could ever hope to achieve and it was this thought that kept Valdo warm at night as you froze him out. He’d felt blessed to find a witcher, a lady witcher at that, but you were not an easy person to win over. You were brusque and stubborn and had not only a wall built up around you but a moat and at least twenty crocodiles snapping from its depths, but Valdo was a determined man and he found crocodiles rather cute if truth me told.  

You found him gorgeous. Gorgeous and funny and talented and strangely perceptive in a way that unsettled you but also made you enamored of him. You felt torn between conflicting urges to pull away and cut him out of your life or keep him safe and close. You wondered if Geralt ever felt this way with Jaskier. If he ever found himself snapping at the bard because he feared for his life if he remained by his side. And because despite it being a cold and miserable existence, isolation had become a space where you knew you could survive and in this life survival seemed to be the best possible outcome.

“Why do you hate me so?” Valdo asked, a dramatic tone in his voice but the question sincere. You were making camp and when he’d offered to go off and look for firewood you’d all but tied him to a tree to make him stay by the campsite.

“I don’t hate you, Valdo,” you replied with a bitter sigh as you set the firewood ablaze with a quickly thrown Igni.

“Well then what do you feel, witcher? Because I’ve been trying but I cannot figure you out,” Valdo said, watching you intently as you slowly divested yourself of your armor to sleep. Valdo admired the ripple of your muscles beneath the thin chemise and closely fitted vest. He watched raptly as you undid the braid you usually kept your hair in to braid.

“May I?” he asked suddenly. You looked up in surprise and to your even greater surprise you found yourself nodding in agreement. He crossed over to you quickly, settling behind you, his body warm and closer than it had ever been besides the moments you’d hauled him over your shoulder to get him away from bar fights he would lose terribly. You instinctively shied away but he stilled your movement with a hand resting just against your thigh, a light touch but one that commanded your full attention.

“Don’t be nervous,” he said, “You can come closer.”

You slowly slid back to where you’d been and he made a satisfied noise. He took the comb from your hands, nimble lute-calloused fingers brushing against strong sword-calloused ones. He gently slid the comb through a lower section of hair, slowly and carefully so as not to snag on tangles. He memorized everything from the color to the texture, to the soft scent of honey from when you’d recently washed your hair. He acted as if he were restoring a delicate piece of art, methodically and reverently and with such tender care you were startled to find yourself getting teary. His hands brushed by the sides of your neck as he pulled back the hair and though still fully clothed you felt strangely naked and vulnerable before him. You never let anyone get this close, physically or otherwise, but you let him and he hadn’t hurt you.

“Fuck,” you bit out as he pulled something out of your hair.

“Oh gods I’m so sorry, my lady, there was a bit of branch,” Valdo said, “Here – I’ll make it better!”

Before you could laugh off his concern or argue that you weren’t a Lady you stiffened as you felt his mouth press a soft kiss against the crown of your head. You tilted back, your amber eyes meeting his emerald ones, and a breathless moment passed between you.

“Oh, there you are,” he breathed.

“What?”

“I see now. I’ve figured you out,” he continued, a soft smile settling over his lips.

“What? No you haven’t. Have not. What? No,” you protested, your words a babbling stream that he paid no heed as those damn eyes swept over your face as if every inch of skin held a confession.

“You’re lonely. You’ve been lonely for so long you don’t know how to let anyone in. But… I’ve slipped in, haven’t I?” his words were confident but at this last question you saw a bit of uncertain vulnerability in his eyes and you swallowed hard, torn again between what you wanted and what would keep you safe. But his arms were warm and he’d been so soft. He’d seen you kill things viciously and without remorse and he’d cleaned the blood from your face and tutted over the state of your bracers and there was no part of you he hadn’t known. Except for the tender ones, the ones you weren’t sure existed anymore until you met him and he’d made them all come alive again.

“Haven’t I?” he echoed.

You could tell a lie and save yourself or you could tell the truth and put you both at risk. Then again, what was life if not one big, terrifying, beautiful risk?

“Yes.”
