in a distant universe… itoshi sae—as blunt as he is—won’t outright admit his feelings towards someone (assuming they didn’t fall for him first 😭🙏) until they confess first.

when your last boyfriend broke up with you, you were obviously more than just heartbroken. you’d turn to sae and just cry in his arms. “he was an ass anyway.” sae says while you’re bawling your eyes out yet you still had the energy to say “like you’re any better…” to which he deadpans at. he shrugs at your insult, not like he could say much anyway because that was a great retort.

the crying eventually turned into slow sniffles and you’re gulping down glasses of water (it was actually sae’s water bottle). however, it was obvious you were just having a breakdown. eyes puffy and bloodshot, 70 million tissues literally everywhere around your face. “you look like shit.” there he goes, back to his straight-forwardness.

deep down, you’re still pretty—call him some kind of sadist or whatever but that won’t stop him from thinking such. you’re frowning and it’s like you were going to cry again and sae actually initiates a hug (he hasn’t done that in forever). “sorry. didn’t mean to make you sad again.” it sounded real and not like some kind of half-assed apology he normally does. he wants to scratch his scalp in annoyance until you hug him back.

“…that is the nicest thing you’ve said to me.” you sob out and now he’s pulling himself away from the hug. he hates this. grabbing another tissue to pound onto your face, effectively hiding it from his tense gaze. “i’m gonna take it back.” he’s still staring at you with his arms crossed as you go wasting another box of tissue. you shake your head frantically. “don’t.” you say, removing the thin paper. your eyes are glassy and red but you’re looking up at him. and the way you’re looking, he just wants to tell you he likes you in the way you liked your ex. it’s like you can tell sae is going too crack soon because for the first time since the breakup, you grace him with a smile.

“i love you, sae.”

“don’t say that. you don’t mean it.” he looks unamused (his eyes widened for a second).

you shook your head once again. “i do mean it. i love you, sae.”

“…i love you too.”

and for the first time, he smiles back at you.
