October 10, 2024 - Pale-headed Rosella (Platycercus adscitus) Found in parts of northeastern and eastern Australia, these parrots live in woodlands, cultivated areas, and shrublands. They primarily eat the seeds, blossoms, and fruits of a wide variety of plants, foraging on the ground and in trees and shrubs. Breeding from February to June in the north of their range and September to December in the south, they nest in cavities in trees, stumps, or fence posts, frequently near water. Females lay clutches of three to five eggs and incubate them alone. They sometimes hybridize with other rosella species.

Pretty Parrots
It’s been a while since we’ve celebrated #Feathursday, so please enjoy these brilliant hand-colored Psittacidae from Sir William Jardine’s The Naturalist’s Library!
Tumblr media
Current common name: Major Mitchell’s cockatoo; pink cockatoo
Current scientific name: Lophochroa leadbeateri
Plyctolophus leadbeateri or the tricolor-crested cockatoo, as the bird is descriptively named in this book, is a native of Australia. The ornithologist Prideaux John Selby, author of the parrot volume in The Naturalist’s Library, admits he doesn’t know very much about this cockatoo’s behavior but notes that “its tricoloured crest of scarlet, yellow, and white … of long acuminate feathers, with the tips directed forwards … can be erected and expanded like a fan, or depressed at the pleasure of the bird” (p. 126).
Tumblr media
Current common name: Burrowing parrot
Current scientific name: Cyanoliseus patagonus
Arara patagonica occupies the South American region of Patagonia, which includes parts of Chile and Argentina. Today, the bird is known as the burrowing parrot because it nests in the “holes of trees and rocks.” According to Prideaux John Selby, the avian “is said to be of a bold and fearless disposition, admitting of near approach” and “is continually uttering its piercing screams, as well when perched as upon wing” (pp. 79-80).

Current common name: Pale-headed rosella
Current scientific name: Platycercus adscitus palliceps
The pale headed broad-tail is the only member of the genus Platycercus depicted in this volume of Jardine’s Naturalist Library. These Australian birds are named for the shape of their tail feathers (Gk. platys (broad) + kerkos (tail of a beast)). Sadly, Prideaux John Selby does not have much to say about this beautiful bird in the accompanying text. However, as a linguistic sidenote, Platycercus birds are more commonly called rosellas. Rosella refers to the European settlement of Rose Hill, New South Wales, where there was a significant population of Platycercus eximius. Europeans called the parrots “Rosehill parakeets,” which evolved to “Rosehiller,” which ultimately became “rosella.”
Tumblr media
Current common name: Palm cockatoo; Goliath cockatoo; Great black cockatoo
Current scientific name: Probosciger aterrimus
This gargantuan avian, which Prideaux John Selby names the goliath aratoo, inhabits the island of New Guinea and the Cape York Peninsula in Australia. These cockatoos can reach an astounding 2 feet in length. This plate caught our eye for the way the colorists brought out the subtleties in the Goliath cockatoo’s coloring as described in the text: “The whole of the plumage is black, but glossed with a greenish-grey tinge in the living bird, from the quantity of a white powdering substance interspersed among the feathers” (p. 139).

Current common name: Alexandrine parakeet
Current scientific name: Palaeornis eupatria
Last but certainly not least, the Alexandrine parakeet is named for none other than Alexander the Great. Indeed, its illustration in the Naturalist Library is distinguished for being the only one showing a parrot with human-built structures in the background. Perhaps in reference to its namesake, the Alexandrine parakeet visually overtakes an ancient cityscape. According to Prideaux John Selby, this bird was the first and perhaps the only parrot known to the ancient Greeks. The parakeet was supposedly introduced to Europe after Alexander the Great’s conquering armies encountered the vibrant avian in Sri Lanka.
