Rhysand Week Day 4 : Lord of Night

Summary - High Lord, Husband, father. Rhysand's plate is just far too full, leading the Inner Circle to take over some duties.

“Please just let me handle this for you,” you were firm in the request, hand still on the request of approval to renovate the Opera house in the Rainbow. “We both know this project is completely unneeded. There is no reason for you to waste your time penning the letter.”

Rhysand stared at where your hand met the paper. His eyes were heavy with exhaustion, “I-”

“No. It's time for us to have a serious discussion.” You took the paper from him and then held his hands. “Rhysand, you have spread yourself far too thin. You are not sleeping well with a newborn, you are helping Feyre as she's healing, you are recovering from trauma. Let me help you by organizing the report by who should actually be handling them.”

Rhys seemed to consider your words before nodding, “I want final-”

“Rhysand, we have known each other for 500 years. Do you truly not trust me enough to make a decision based on your preferences?”

He tugged that power exchange bond between the two of you, silently asking for a bit of your energy. You offered it to him without hesitation, without even so much as thinking about your well-being over his. “I do not want the fae in this court knowing I'm not the one running the court.” You couldn't help but sigh and roll your eyes and stare at him, blinking as if to say, “Duh.” His lips twitched into a smile at you, “What are you going to do, sweetheart? Forge my signat..” His eyes went wide as he realized that was exactly what you had planned. “I expect brief rundowns first.”

“And you will have them. Now go take a nap.”

The Inner Circle gathered in the new father's office claiming reports left and right. Cassian took anything involving Illyria and the training camps. Azriel took anything involving newcomers to the City of Starlight, border related issues, and requests for visiting. Mor and Amren split Hewn City. Dividing those reports among issues relating to rumors of uprisings or requests for help and sanctuary from tortured females. It left you with things regarding the inner workings of Velaris. You were curled in your own office, writing the rejection letter for the Opera House Project. The Opera House had been a gift to Velaris after Rhysand's return home. It was barely more than a few years old and every single feature had been planned to perfection by you and Rhysand as a way to heal the odd bind that tied you two together. The wealthy fae of Velaris were asking to redo the seating. Specifically, they wanted the seats to be made larger. 

You knew this wasn't for comfort. You had fallen in love with studying the patterns of consumerism throughout Prythian history. You knew this project was aimed at accessibility. Less sears meant higher prices for shows. Higher prices meant exclusion of the middle and lower classes. Exclusion from the arts was dangerous, though. Something you, Rhysand, and Feyre stood firmly against. 

Hours seemed to pass as you finished one thing and moved to the next, realizing how far behind Rhysand had gotten. He was hardly sleeping, rotating nights with Feyre, or just forcing her to sleep while he handled nights with a newborn alone. He was being the father he never had. One who earned the title of Dad, and you knew the last thing he'd want was the fae he cared so much for to suffer because of it. 

The sunset when Cassian arrived, his work completed. “Rhys has been given the gist of everything. I am to only have to send one thing to the camp leaders,” Cassian slid a letter, one penned by himself over to you. “Rhysie is having them start to direct all issues to me first. Using your whole chain of command idea.” 

Silence. 

Cassian's words were met with silence as you swallowed hard, holding in tears of pride. “He's delegating?!”

The commander nodded, scarred lips twitching to smirk. “He is.”

You'd never faked his signature so fast, quill flying across the parchments, “This is good.”

Azriel was next with Nuala and Cerridwen in tow, “City guard is to report issues to the twins from now on,” he leaned into his chair. “If they deem it serious enough, they will handle it unless I need to get involved.”

“And if you can't handle it,” you questioned as a joke. 

Azriel scoffed before schooling his reaction to your jab, “Then, and only then, is Rhys to get involved. My part of his reports are done and sent. I didn't think anyone would have issues with me answering security related issues.” 

They'd be a fool to, is what you wanted to reply with. Azriel was not the type of male to fuck with unless you had a death wish. He was petty at times and loved to plot. 

Mor came next, throwing herself dramatically into the chair. “I hate how your Office is a dry zone,” she groaned. “I'll be visiting daddy dearest.” 

You gagged at that and the two of you launched into a gossip session. Turns out, her father had taken Rhysand's recent absence in Hewn City as an open invitation to run a few illegal trade rings. Rings Mor was all too happy to be putting an end to. 

“That summarizes what Amren and I will both be dealing with,” she yawned, perfect red nails flying to her lips. “I'm going to bed.”

Midnight.

2am rolled around and your door opened again, a sleepy Rhysand carrying a sleeping Nyx. “Go to bed,” his tone was commanding but held an air of affection to you. “You're no better than me.”

You only maintained eye contact, smirking as you put his name on a document approving a community vegetable garden and greenhouse, “Yet here we are,” you whispered. “All your reports, acquisitions, and petitions done and handled.”

His face fell, eyes shutting as he nodded, “You all got me caught up?”

With a wave of your hand, all the stacks vanished to their proper locations where they would sit and wait to be opened by their receivers. “We did,” you stood as silently as possible and moved to him and Nyx, “Do you want me to go lay him down?”

Rhysand only responded by pulling you into a tight side hug, his face burying in your hair, “How can I repay you for this? You have no clue what this meant to Feyre and I.”

The hug was payment enough. Contact with your best friend making that power bond hum as you hugged him back, “No repayment is necessary, Rhys. We all need help sometimes.”

“But-”

You whispered again, interrupting him, “We all need help sometimes.”

Understand, gratefulness, and admiration filled his almost violet colored gaze, “How did I get blessed with Feyre as my mate and you as my carranam?”

“Good question,” you shot back. “Maybe it was so we could keep you humble.” You took Nyx slowly, moving to walk the little heir back to his nursery. “Or maybe it was to keep you from dying in your office. Goodnight, Rhysand.”

You could tell he wanted to sass you back, to have the last word. It had been so long since that side of him came out, and you were glad to see a day of rest brought some fire back to him. He seemed to settle with nodding, walking backwards as he watched you take Nyx, “This isn't over. Once I wake up refreshed tomorrow, it's on. Goodnight, Y/n.”

i actually think i have some sort of brain damage from chapter 403 because now ive taken my bkdk obsession to a whole new degree. like, i was insane before, but now i feel as if i should be genuinely put into an asylum.

ive gone through a full on awakening.

before this chapter i refused to believe that bkdk would become canon/hinted bc like its wishful thinking. but now? ive fallen into the fucking deep end. i am of full belief that bkdk will become canon or at least be hinted bc horikoshi is cooking something and im so glad im not the only one to see it.

there is no way that man doesnt know what hes doing. bkdks entire arc has been fucking perfect and this man just keeps BUILDING UP. like all this talk about feelings, and how bkdk have never really spoken about them to eachother before??? this is like, building up to a fucking love confession i swear, because katsuki DIED for izuku, and izuku cant control his heart when it comes to katsuki, and like… what other explaination is there? atp i consider it canon that theyre in love with each other.

and the other most likely ship that i thought was gonna be canon, izuocha, just is not feasible. its not like i dislike the ship, no hate to it at all, but making it canon would be so fucking harmful to izuku and ochakos characters and we dont talk about that enough. it would a dissapointing, flat conclusion with barely any build up and itd be the bland, predictable formula. like, ochako has already basically wrapped up her thing with izuku with that entire fight with toga. shes admitted herself that her crush on izuku was more admiration than anything of massive substance. and dont even get me started on izuku. barring some fluster and embarrassed blushing in the early seasons, this boy has NOT reciprocated AT ALL. its actually ridiculous. izuku has been focused on like, two things only: hero work, and kacchan. izuku does not show ANY romantic feeling to ochako whatsoever.

surely, surely if horikoshi were to make this canon, he’d put in a little more effort? add some more chemistry, more development, more than just ‘boy meets girl. blush and get shy. little crush. get married. the end’?

that is bad storytelling, and horikoshi is anything but a bad storyteller. this guy adds foreshadowing YEARS before the chapter. horikoshi is INSANE when it comes to character + relationship + plot development. if horikoshi throws all that out the way, and makes izuocha canon, id be extremely, extremely disappointed. not because i hate the ship, but because itd be out of nowhere, disregard practically ALL development, and be nauseatingly dissatisfying.

talking of which, for the entire day ive been thinking about the foreshadowing for bkdk.

there. is. so. fucking. much. it feels like everytime i read like a new section of the manga, their relationship is described in the most frutti tutti rainbow gay way. im sorry, shigafo, did you just say that katsuki is closer to izuku than ANYONE else? excuse me, aizawa, did you just describe them as pair, a pair that the class revolves around? dont even mention the shit that izuku and katsuki say referring to each other. i cant even choose one to add in here, but every out of context bkdk quote has like these SEVERE more-than-platonic undertones, especially when you consider their past and their development. i feel like horikoshi has been doing some fucking insane foreshadowing for something MORE.

yk, i keep on thinking about how in the double spread in 403, the words ‘the beginning’ are displayed right over bkdk, as they find each other. call me delusional, but that has to be on purpose. i also keep on thinking about izukus green and orange gloves in so many official arts, and the light in both their eyes when they see each other, and the way theyre both always observing the other, never speaking about how they feel directly.

their relationship is just so, so……. and i feel like the only next step is for them to talk. just. fucking. talk. its been hinted at for so long, and horikoshi is doing SOMETHING.

them simply being together would be the most satisfying, developed, beautiful ending.

if they arent canon, i will die. ill say it now. bkdk canon. there is too much proof. as a writer, i know for a fact that i write everything for a REASON. why would horikoshi write this, if he wasn’t going to do anything with it?

bkdk will be canon. i dont care if i sound insane, or get proved entirely wrong. i now fully believe that the last page of the manga will be bkdk at a theme park eating crepes.

anspec / anattspec / absolspec / absolnispec : anattractional/absolnian spectrum.

So I use non-sam ace mainly, but anattractional fits me too. The problem that holds (or used to) me back from using it is the language, or lack thereof.

Like say, what is the -spec version of anattractional? I think most would just answer aspec (that's what I would say before too), but aspec isn't an anattractional specific label, it's for all a- orientations. That's like saying the spectrum version of aromantic is aspec, instead of arospec. It's correct in a way, as those identities would be included under aspec, but you could get more specific.

I don't think aspec should be redefined, it should stay a broad umbrella term, and I also don't think anattractional should just be a second definition for aspec, it should get it's own specific spectrum label too, like all the other a- orientations. I don't like the lack of clarity with using aspec for both definitions, I feel like it pushes anattractional to the side, and I still like aspec more as a general, non specific term.

(First) I came up with anspec. Based off of aspec, as that's what typically thought of as the spec version of anattractional. But with an- in front, like how anattractional is prefixed with an-.

(Later) I asked @isobug for a short version of anattractional, Isopod came up with anatt (and also anat, though I prefer the double T version because anat has other unrelated meanings).

Isopod later also came up with absolnian, an alt term to anattractional (similar idea to terms like anodiean), and the shortening absol/absolni.

I both terms, anspec for it's simplicity, and absol-spec/absolni-spec for how it matches with other aspec terms (like ace-spec, aro-spec, apl-spec, etc.), so I'm posting this with both names.

There are no specific stripe meanings for the flag. I just followed the general gradient style of other a-spec flags, and the way they're more colourful than their base flags (instead of using plain white, they use pastel coloured white, or dark colours instead of black/grey, for example).

Here's why I chose dark, almost purplish, blue: For main a-spec flag colours, like aromantic and aplatonic (purple blue green cream apl flag), the colours chosen are the "opposite" of their a-attraction (aromantic green is the opposite of red, which is associated with romance, and aplatonic uses the inverse of multiple colours associated with platonic). From there, I generally have this idea in my head that a- colours are cool/cold colours, the opposite of the warm colours colours associated with attractions. Of all the colours, all with the same value+saturation, the dark blue in between regular blue and purple is visually the darkest/coldest colour. So I felt that would fit as a colour to add to the -spec version of anattractional. (Colour wheel for reference)

Though I still think black is the best colour for representing anattractional. You could think of it like, black = no light, like how it's no attraction. Or subtractive colouring, where if you mixed all the main aspec flag colours (which is the probably the full rainbow at this point) together, then you get black (or at least a very dark colour). It's also just kind of iconic, like the more I look at it, the more I think the use of pitch black as the main colour is really unique/distinct/cool.

Urara has the chance of a lifetime to get closer to her late mother. So of course, Shibiretta conspires to prevent this. Let’s dig in!

The Plot

Urara is preparing for a very special audition: it will be the same show in the same venue as her late mother’s final performance, which left a big impact on young Urara and inspired her to become an actress in the first place. She approaches this with a rare seriousness, saying she HAS to pass. She primarily opens up to Syrup about the significance of this to her, but when she tries to sing a song, she can only cough. Suddenly, she and all the other main cast find themselves trapped under the sea, turned into mermaids and sea creatures.

At Eternal, Shibiretta was spying on Urara and concocting a plan. Anacondy visited her office and the two rivals butted heads, so Shibiretta sprang into action, sucking the girls into the story of The Little Mermaid and capturing Urara’s singing voice in a seashell. The witch offers to return Urara’s voice in exchange for the Rose Pact, and surprisingly, the girls seem to be willing to make this trade, but Urara refuses because their mission to the Cure Rose Garden is bigger than her personal life.

Nozomi convinces her that they can get the Pact back, so they give it to Shibiretta, who predictably double crosses them and refuses to return Urara’s voice. Cococtopus spews ink all over her, and Syrup grabs both the Rose Pact and the seashell with Urara’s voice in the commotion. Then Precure and Milky Rose transform, losing their mermaid tails.

In the course of the battle, Shibiretta tries to steal back the pact by attacking Syrup with the Stingray Hoshiina’s tail. He drops the seashell, nearly losing Urara’s voice, but Coco and Nuts manage to save it. Cure Lemonade then uses Prism Chain to grab the Hoshiina and swing it around before throwing it into the cliff face, and the team finishes it off with Rainbow Rose Explosion. Shibiretta flees and the story world fades away.

Urara performs her song “Twintail Magic” for her audition. Washio later shows up at Natts House to deliver the results. He looks sad at first, but then reveals she passed the audition and got the part.

Urara talks to Syrup alone and redeems the free ride coupon he gave her in episode 18. While flying, he says that the open sky feels nice, and admits that he may have experienced this sensation before…

The Analysis

What I Liked

It’s an alright episode. I enjoyed Urara’s strong determination, watching her work for her dream, because of the personal significance to her.

On the other hand, Urara’s unwavering willingness to sacrifice her personal dream for the greater good is very powerful and mature, it shows that she understands the big picture.

Urara has several flashbacks to recount her journey up to this point, including her singing debut at the mall. I also appreciate the payoff to the free ride pass she got in episode 18.

Urara and Syrup continue to develop a unique closeness. They’re a common shipping couple, though I think they come in last place behind the other three major ships of the series (Nozomi/Coco, Komachi/Nuts, and Karen/Kurumi) and their bond is still portrayed as very platonic, with no romantic signifiers.

While I am not advocating for it, it is a good thing that the Precure series features topics such as absentee parents or even deceased parents sometimes, and how the characters are affected and shaped by it.

The underwater forms for the mascots are funny. Coco becomes an octopus, Nuts is a pufferfish, and Syrup is a sea turtle.

What I Didn’t Like

I know that I said in episode 38 that I appreciated Shibiretta as a villain for the originality of the fairy tale worlds, and that’s true here to an extent, but it still has the problem of the writers and characters not taking full advantage of the setting. The girls are only mermaids for a few minutes and they don’t do anything as mermaids they couldn’t have done as humans. They don’t have to figure out how to swim with fish tails, they don't meet any other mermaids, there’s nothing to it. Yes, Shibiretta taking Urara’s singing voice is a parallel to the original story, and she spells that out explicitly for the younger audience members that may not be familiar with the story, but they don’t need to be mermaids for that. The only advantage of her storybook world is that the girls are stck there until they defeat her.

When the girls transform, they stop being mermaids, which seems like a real missed opportunity in my opinion.

The girls’ mermaid outfits are all identical patterned dresses, just colored in their respective theme color.I wish they’d been more unique. They didn’t have to be in seashell bras, they could have even been in their normal civilian clothes. It arguably would have been less work when making their control sheets to draw their usual tops and then have mermaid tails instead of legs, than redesigning them all in the aquatic dresses they had.

Yes this is petty, but I wish they had used a vocal-only version of Urara’s song for her audition scene. I know they want to get people to buy the single, but it breaks the world a little bit that she starts singing a song with a backing track in a room where she clearly doesn’t have a boombox or anything to sing along to.

Miscellaneous

The story of The Little Mermaid involves a mermaid who makes a deal with a sea witch to become a human, in exchange for her voice. At the end of the story she dies and turns into sea foam, but because of her good deeds she earns a soul and makes it into heaven. Obviously the 1989 Disney movie is the most famous adaptation, which deviates significantly from the story in the last act. It also got a live action remake last year, which I have not seen. However there are numerous other adaptations of the story, varying in their faithfulness to the narrative.

The only elements kept in this episode are the undersea setting, the presence of mermaids, a sea witch, and one mermaid (Urara) losing her voice, though here it’s only her singing voice and not her entire voice.

This is the first appearance of Washio, Urara’s manager, in a while.

We see Kurumi in mermaid form during her pre-transformation stock footage. None of the others get this luxury.

This is the first time the concept of Precures and mermaids are mixed. It will not be the last. I think there’s more episodes where the precures are trend into mermaids somehow, and then of course there is the mermaid-themed Cure Mermaid in Go Princess, and then finally an actual mermaid becomes a Precure in Tropical-Rouge.

I didn’t mention this in the plot recap, but at one point Nozomi gives Urara a bead bracelet that Rin made, and Urara is still seen wearing it and clutching it tightly for encouragement during her audition. So it’s a nice little nod there, and also a casual reminder that the bead maker exists. We’ll get another reminder of that next time.

There is an animation error when Urara’s mermaid form is shown off in full: the bottom of her tail cuts off above the bottom of the frame, leaving a gap.

Milk does not appear in her fairy form in this episode.

Conclusion

It’s an okay episode for Urara’s story but I wish she had been given more time to do her thing. I also wanted more in the setting of The Little Mermaid. The episode tried to do a few too many things but didn’t make the most of its ideas.

Next time, on Precure Daily: Rin has to contemplate the true nature of accessories and why people choose to wear them, and also maybe go on a date with Mucardia!? Look forward to it!

It’s cool that you like older dolls. I like fashion dolls, like from Mattel and MGA. Do you like any fashion dolls or those that are considered new like in the past 25-ish years? (I related so hard when you said you can talk non-stop about ocean liners to people, cause I’m the same way with toys).

You said you had an idea to write something of two yanderes with each of their darlings becoming friends, but not knowing how to write it. I love pregnancy tropes too. I also wish people wrote about it more and loved it as much as I. Pregnancy and children in general change so much of a person’s/couple’s life in real life, so it’d be so much fun to explore that new life change in stories more. @mamayan wrote a great baby trapping story, and a post-baby trapping story exploring a bit of the new family dynamic of a yandere, their wife, and their child. Hm, I think that those new rainbow high dolls are really pretty (along with the original monster high dolls), but it's not my taste in collecting. The newer dolls I can collect could be from the 70's/80's! Since you mentioned Mattel, do you collect Barbies? Are there any special/limited that you own in that case?

Yeah, I might actually abandon that story all and together. It's not something I have the energy or motivation to do right now. Since I'm writing the story with dr kry's twin girls, there's basically two (actually three) darlings, so I guess I get that kind of fill from there, even if it's only one yandere :) might try it out someday in the future, but probably not. Not my priority right now.

I absolutely love writing families, especially yandere families. There's just something about it. I am writing a story about Ludwig keeping an eye on his mother and little sister while Edmund is out on business, so you will most likely get to see Ludwig in action in the future :)
