Girls, Girls, Girls - Who is who?

This is an overview of the most talked about girls on this blog, who are or were in Kells’ life one way or another. (It isn’t finished yet and I’ll update it whenever I can, next girl will be Sahara.)

Relationship to Kells: Probably dated from the beginning of July 2019 towards the end of October 2019.

Summary: I don’t recall the exact date when he followed Chantel or if she was already following him on Instagram, but publicly it all started when she attended his concert at The Wiltern in L.A. on June 30th 2019. Shortly after, both were seen at the Peppermint Club in L.A. to watch Dave Chapelle, where they were being filmed and photographed by paparazzi and afterwards had dinner at the Nice Guy. On July 4th Kells announced that he smashed Chantel and did the walk of shame, the same day they were at the 6th Annual 'Red, White & Bootsy' 4th July party in Malibu, where Chantel was djing and Kells performed as well. However he did the walk of shame actually multiple times according to an anon. Despite many fans complaining about her not being supportive, she did at least post about ‘Hotel Diablo’ on it’s release day. In the beginning there were many paparazzi pictures and videos taken of them (I let you guess who called them) for example when they were having lunch with Chantel’s friends or dinner and one time they even met up in New York, where he did some interviews for his new album ‘Hotel Diablo’ at the end of July. Chantel’s favourite paparazzo even got to asked both Chantel and Kells about their dating life, but neither of them really admitted to anything yet. He also caught them talking to fans or picking up clothes, although not for Jake Paul’s wedding as the title suggests. Jake Paul actually doesn’t like Chantel much and completely exposed her once (around 12:50). Anyway Kells also drove Chantel and her friends to Comic Con in San Diego, where he posted Chantel’s feet on his steering wheel and lap, while he was driving the car. Apparently Chantel didn’t see anything wrong with that and a week later she even joked around with Kells about him driving without a license. So for a month they spend a lot of time together, but since August he was touring again and went to Japan and Europe, so it seemed like they only saw each other a couple of times for example in London, where Kells took a flight earlier than his band mates, while Chantel was again with two friends there. Allegedly when he was in London with her, they started following each other, after many fans were speculating why they weren’t following each other already, however he allegedly removed some of his likes on more sexual posts, some thought that she might have told him to do it. Twitter was in general a medium for Chantel to subtweet about Kells all the time and having extreme changes in her mood. Especially since September their relationship seemed to go downhill. She tweeted song lyrics about lovers becoming strangers and missing someone, but also starting to forget about him. But around the middle of September, they seemed to be fine again, because Chantel posted a picture of two lovers in a bad on her Instagram story, which she captioned with ‘us’. By the way she previously posted another picture, where the couple resembled her and Kells back in July. However they seemed to have had a fight, maybe even took a break or called it quits, only a couple of days later. Chantel posted about the perfect song for an afternoon cry, while Kells told everyone that he’ll date himself. Two days later he was still in a bad mood. Nevertheless around a week later, they were still or back together and Chantel made their relationship public by posting a paparazzi picture of them in Kells’ car and calling him her baby. Kells took his time until he reposted the picture on his Instagram story as well only to delete it briefly after and then posted it again hours later. He seemed a bit unsure of this whole thing. And I honestly believe that Chantel didn’t post it, because they were so in love, but because it was the last thing she felt she could do to try to keep their relationship going. For her birthday Kells commented nothing special under her birthday picture, but her sister reminded us all that Chantel was still in his life by congratulating her with a picture of Chantel next to Kells’ yellow car. Around that time he fully stopped occasionally liking and commenting on her Instagram pictures and their relationship seemed quite done and over based on the cryptic tweets Chantel wrote in October about him. There was for example her very insensitive tweet about Kells choosing to be sad, which she was called out for by other fans, because it was obvious that she was talking about him or her liking tweets about being ignored. Shortly after that she claimed to have an existential crisis, I assume because of Kells, while he opened up about feeling hurt all the time, but blamed himself for it. The next day he unfollowed Chantel, so it seemed like they broke up for good and the same day he lost control on stage and explained that personal frustration was the reason for it, but that he wanted to get help after the tour ended. Chantel stayed quiet about it, but after a video appeared in which a guy was touching a girl’s ass and then showing the middle finger, while the girl and her friend were dancing on the Tour bus and Chantel and her sister were the only ones tagged on the post, she unfollowed him as well on October 29th. But that wasn’t the end yet, because now she had some things to say in her typical cryptic tweeting style. A day after she unfollowed him, she started with saying that hurt people hurt people, which was a tweet that Kells liked, continued with that she has questions and I assume that Kells made her feel something again. However Kells kept being petty towards her as well with Sahara (see below) and after that ended, him and Chantel refollowed each other on Instagram again and ended up partying together into the new Year 2020, but Chantel seemed to have moved on with Diplo for now, while Kells is in love with the music.

In my opinion these two didn’t fit at all and I talked in more detail about it here, but from the beginning it was clear that they wouldn’t work out, because Kells usually preferred his privacy while Chantel seemed to be someone, who needed and enjoyed the media attention and had no problem with publicizing her relationships. Also Kells was and still is struggling with his own demons and Chantel seemed to lack empathy and understanding for it, accusing him more than understanding that he isn’t in the right mindset for a relationship. I don’t know if this relationship was supposed to be exclusive, because Kells hooked up and wanted to hook up with other girls on tour, but he said before that girls know what they’re getting into, when they’re dating him and Chantel’s own friends literally joked about how Chantel’s bad habit is that she doesn’t know that she has a boyfriend (around 08:04), which was Kells and I also doubt that Chantel was completely focused on him either, although it might have looked like it. She’s a calculated person and knows how to climb up the social ladder and how to play people and present herself in the public eye. I’m sure she always has an eye on other celebrities, from whose relationship she could benefit.

Relationship to Kells: casual dating that turned into an open long-term toxic relationship from probably around the end of 2015 till the beginning of 2018

Summary: They met through their mutual friend Taav Cooperman. At first it was only casual between them until they realized that it was time to stop fucking around. They dated till around his birthday in 2016 and were on and off till 2018. Although Hedi has been described by various people as a toxic person and she went back and forth between Kells and her ex(-es), she seemed to be one of the few woman, he caught feelings for and was also one of the few, who he posted about on his Instagram page. He also knew family members of her, who liked him as well. But apart from that they kept their relationship low-key and most pictures of them were posted by friends. She was also the one, who got him more into fashion and I believe even had some connections for him. It is believed that his songs ‘Let you go’ and ‘The Break Up’ are about her. I don’t know if they’re still in contact, because they run in the same Hollywood circles, but I hope that she will never be a part of his life again, because she seemed to only want to play with him and keep him as her plan B, when she can’t date someone else.

In my opinion she never really loved him, because you wouldn’t play with someone you love and respect. However I think that Kells was in love with her, because she’s actually a mum, who takes care of her son and Kells never really had a mother, so he probably saw her as a caring and nurturing woman. She also fits to his preference of an independent woman, since she runs her own business and was fine with him sleeping with other girls.

Relationship to Kells: I believed that they were dating, others thought that they weren’t, but after writing this, I changed my mind. It looks like she wanted them to become something serious, while he preferred to keep it a casual fling from around January till the beginning of April 2019.

Summary: Publicly it all started after she commented a black heart under a picture of him around January 14th 2019, which isn’t on his Instagram page anymore. However you can still see the picture on the photographers Instagram page (melimelzone). The only pictures of her and Kells were taken on January 28th, where she went to Sundance Film Festival as well, I assume as his plus one, where they showed Big Time Adolescence. And on February 1st both of them attended Pete’s comedy show in L.A. After that they weren’t publicly seen together anymore, but she was busy on social media liking pictures of him on his fan pages and posting about him and the guys on her Instagram story, while Kells was very likely hooking up with Paris Hilton and partying with Katie (see below). At a mutual friend’s birthday dinner, that happened in the beginning of April, they were already not sitting next to each other anymore (Josie was wearing the grey cap and white shirt) and like 2 weeks later she unfollowed him finally. But that isn’t really a surprise, considering that she unfollowed and refollowed him so often during this short time to the point where fans couldn’t take it seriously anymore. She also wrote many cryptic tweets about him and allegedly deleted tweets prior to being with Kells, in which she was siding with Eminem and agreeing to everything he said about Kells during their beef. She’s also known for posting Eminem songs whenever she’s unhappy with Kells (till this day) and allegedly talked shit about him before, during and after their fling. I guess because he attacked Eminem and then she was unhappy, that he didn’t want to be in a relationship with her. However they seem to be on friendly terms now. Recently she even tried to flirt with him on Twitter again, but he still didn’t seem interested in her like that.

In my opinion Josie is probably too childish for Kells and brings too much stress. Kells is actually a chill guy and Josie seems like things need to go her way or she would throw a tantrum. She also has no problem with pda and publicly living her relationships, although I don’t think that’s so surprising, since she was part of reality tv shows before.

He offers to help you with homework that you don’t get done right away, so that way the stuff you do get done you have to be proud of, while the rest actually does get done

You take him up on that

And you guys start a series of study dates!

But then one day the 1-A living room that you guys had planned on taking is conquered by the ladies

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 14th July 2019 (Post Malone, Young Thug, Lizzo, Dave)

Top 10

This week, we actually have a new number-one, but I find it hard to be invested in “Senorita” by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello hitting the top after moving up one spot from last week, especially because their limelight will be taken back by Ed Sheeran next week with the No. 6 Collaborations Project, although again, Sheeran has ran himself into a corner if he wants an album bomb (None of his singles released between “BLOW” and “Antisocial” could have possibly charted in the UK). This is Mendes’ second UK #1, his first since “Stitches” in 2015, and Cabello’s second as well, her first since “Havana”. It shouldn’t matter, it’ll be Ed’s next week.

After eight weeks at #1 since its debut, “I Don’t Care” by Ed Sheeran featuring Justin Bieber, a pretty pathetic song in my opinion but far from the worst on the project, is now down one spot to number-two. Once again, it’ll rebound, and if it doesn’t, there’ll be a Sheeran debut to replace both this and “Senorita” pretty quickly.

Oh, yeah, speaking of an Ed, “Beautiful People” featuring Khalid has surprisingly kept steady from its debut last week at number-three.

“Hold Me While You Wait” by Lewis Capaldi is up a single spot to number-four... why?

We also have our first and only top 10 debut, “Goodbyes” by Post Malone at number-five, featuring a verse from... Young Thug. I couldn’t tell you if this is Young Thug’s anything since his Wikipedia discography page is incredibly uncooperative, but this is Post Malone’s tenth UK Top 40 hit and seventh UK Top 10. We’ll talk more about it later, and I have some things to say about it to say the least.

“Crown” by Stormzy takes a two-space hit down to number-six.

Somehow, whilst now assisted by a (Pretty bad) remix with Young Thug and Mason Ramsey, the kid who yodelled in Walmart a couple years back, and a new animated music video about Area 51, “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, etc. is still at number-seven for like the fourth week in a row. We’ll see if this is in freefall or not next week.

Oh, and “Cross Me” by Ed Sheeran featuring Chance the Rapper and PNB Rock is down two spaces to number-eight. Whether this means it’ll rebound or be completely replaced by another Sheeran track like “Antisocial” or probably “Take Me Back to London”, again, we’ll find out next week.

“Wish You Well” by Sigala and Becky Hill isn’t moving at number-nine.

Finally, Mabel’s “Mad Love” has dipped down two spaces to #10 but I don’t think this is the end of this song, this can be a genuine summer smash; it fits all the requirements.

Climbers

We have a couple of climbers within the UK Top 40 but not many and none of these are even all that good. I mean, I’m not complaining about “Higher Love” by Kygo and Whitney Houston jumping up ten spaces to #26. Oh, yeah, and by not many I meant none at all, this is the only climber above five spaces in the entire UK Top 40.

Fallers

We have a lot more of these, though; in fact we have plenty here to talk about. “Kilos” by Bugzy Malone featuring Aitch is once again down ten spaces, this time to #40, so sadly Bugzy doesn’t get that summer hit he was expected to reach in terms of longevity but I’m sure a top 20 hit will look good down the line, and we should be thankful it didn’t drop out from the debut entirely, because honestly I expected it to. Elsewhere at #33, “Summer Days” by Martin Garrix, Macklemore and Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy (Yes, that’s how it’s been credited since release) is down seven spaces, nearing “Piece of Your Heart” by MEDUZA and Goodboys at #32, down eight spots from last week. Billie Eilish’s “bad guy” is slowly making its way out now, down five to #23, with Drake’s “Money in the Grave” featuring Rick Ross doing the same, but prematurely at #22. Otherwise, yeah, there’s not much to speak of here, so let’s move on.

Dropouts & Returning Entries

There’s one drop out here that’s gone from the top 75 here and it’s unfortunate but seems to be because of streaming cuts, and it’s “Guten Tag” by Hardy Caprio and DigDat, out from #35 after nine weeks, but it had its run and never really exploded as much as it could have, but again, top 20 hit for a week, nobody’s complaining, The biggest fall otherwise is “If I Can’t Have You” by Shawn Mendes which probably also had that streaming cut in its tenth week, falling out from #19. Elsewhere, “Don’t Check on Me” by Chris Brown featuring Justin Bieber and Ink is out from the debut at #29, “Easier” by 5 Seconds of Summer is finally out from #37 and the deplorable “Heaven” by the late Avicii featuring Chris Martin is out from #39. Oh, and “Giant” by Calvin Harris and Rag’n’Bone Man is out from #40 AGAIN. It’ll be back next week or in a couple of weeks, but its chart run has been pretty interesting to follow recently. There aren’t any returning entries, so let’s get straight to the new arrivals.

NEW ARRIVALS

#37 – “Truth Hurts” – Lizzo

Produced by Ricky Reed and Tele – Peaked at #5 in New Zealand and #6 in the US

Our first two new arrivals are songs that are at least two years old and are just now charting for various reasons, and I’m just glad the UK Top 40 has no recurrent rule because there are some chart moments that could never happen in the US without Billboard getting a bit stingy and inconsistent about what’s allowed and what’s not. This song in particular was dropped in 2017 with a music video and didn’t exactly make waves, mostly because Lizzo wasn’t as known but she does well critically (And did at the time too with her two studio albums she abandoned once she blew up and the image changed), and it was never planned to be on an album. When the song was featured in a Netflix film, Something Great, it clicked with audiences, who would later use it as a TikTok meme because of course they did, and then it replaced “Juice” as the promoted single. Viral sleeper hits from years ago in your career breaking out in the midst of an album cycle is naturally pretty awkward. Anyways, this eventually debuted at #50 on the Hot 100 and became an unexpected massive worldwide smash for the rapper-singer, becoming a US Top 10 hit and now entering here in the UK charts, becoming her second UK Top 40 single after “Juice”. And now for the song itself, I’ll try and keep it brief because I don’t have much to say about it. My stance for now is that it’s pretty good, I like the gliding strings and synths that build up to a pretty fun drop, especially with Lizzo’s vocals and lyrics, which are about boy problems but in a way that’s very sassy and seems oddly personal, directed to someone from Detroit, who she replaced with someone on the Minnesota Vikings team. Some of these punchlines are pretty witty and especially well-delivered with her messy, off-key singing and constantly shifting flow, often with janky overlap between bars. The chorus is really catchy, like it’s not “Baby Shark” level infectious but it’s up there, especially with the little backing vocals accentuating the lyrics. I like the voice cracks in the second verse, and it demonstrates a point where I have an issue with the song, but that may be the point. For a song that seems so confident and full of braggadocio, everything around it wants you to think it’s a lot less stable, with synths that kind of just glide in, the off-key singing, and the badly-mixed trap percussion that’s especially noticeable when watching the video. That could be really clever as it shows the lyrics are mostly a front to cover how pained Lizzo is after this break-up, or maybe I’m completely over-thinking a trap-rap song about being “100% that b****”. Probably that one.

#36 – “Thiago Silva” – Dave and AJ Tracey

Now, this is a less gradual rise to popularity. It was released all the way back in May 2016 by the two UK rappers who have later blown up and made separate names for themselves. It didn’t get much notice in the mainstream because of course it didn’t, it was 2016. British hip hop was only starting to get more chart presence, and the general public isn’t going to gravitate to two newcomers without an album out at the time, more likely a legacy artist who makes safer variations of grime and trap. Nevertheless, Dave and AJ Tracey are now pretty massive, so their collaborative single from three years ago was later certified Silver (No pun intended) in December of last year, and eventually charted because of a viral performance from Glastonbury 2019, where in the June festival, because AJ Tracey couldn’t make it, Dave called up a fan called Alex who knew all of the lyrics to recite them with Dave. He killed it, did an incredibly awkward interview on Good Morning Britain afterwards, and here we are, with Dave’s twelfth UK Top 40 hit and AJ Tracey’s sixth. I have no idea who Thiago Silva is or what his prominence is, but I know he’s a Brazillian footballer and that the song isn’t actually about Thiago Silva, it’s actually surprisingly generic coming from Dave, but you shouldn’t expect much substance from a grime track made for clubs, and he still has his typical puns that are almost so awful that they tread the line between being so bad it’s good and just circling back around to being awful again.

True say, I ain’t really a drinker / But I got love for brandy like Ray J

The beat is a re-work of influential grime group Ruff Sqwad’s song “Pied Piper”, and I always like when artists of a similar genre call upon some of the works that inspired them for samples... the instrumental takes that low-fidelity sample, add some bumping 808s and trading verses from Dave and AJ. AJ Tracey kills it, and you can tell he was perfectly prepared for “Ladbroke Grove” years later, because he knows how to flow on a grime beat, and actually sounds quite professional. You can’t really blame Dave since he’s very young at the time this was recorded and released, but his verses all suck here, his performance overall is often somewhat off-beat, and sounds really janky anyway, mostly because of how it’s mixed (Badly, if you couldn’t figure that out) and how Dave isn’t recognisable, he sounds like AJ a lot of the time and switches through a lot of different simple flows and cadences without ever keeping his character. The lyrical content is nothing to speak of either. I wish I liked this a lot more, to be honest, but it’s not bad at all.

#34 – “Castles” – Freya Ridings

Produced by Dan Nigro, Mark Crew, Dan Priddy and Yves Rothman – Peaked at #3 in Scotland

Remember Freya Ridings? I sure don’t, she’s boring and unrecognisable from a set of “genuine, down-to-earth” singers, and not just female singers; she’s very much from the same strand of bore as Lewis Capaldi. Her last two singles, including UK Top 10 hit “Lost Without You”, were pretty, I guess, and that’s the main reason I tend to give her a pass over Capaldi – her singles actually sound decently produced and competent, despite overly breathy singing and mostly consisting of a few piano notes and string loops. Her writing isn’t recognisable at all as I said and she doesn’t have a signature style, but she doesn’t need to be. Just deliver it well, and that’s all that should matter, but she’s not convincing. She’s also not everywhere like Capaldi, so I guess that explains my preference. Anyway, this is her second UK Top 40 hit and I don’t care. It’s cut from the same cloth as a lot of indie-rock, which I’m surprised by, but it lacks any weight and gut, it feels like it doesn’t have much grandiosity in its production as a build-up until that chorus comes in, and to be fair to her and her writers, it’s a pretty incredible chorus. I feel like Ridings’ vocals aren’t mixed all too well, they’re a bit quiet until they become multi-tracked in the pre-chorus. That’s enough complaining though, because honestly this is a pretty good song. The use of Ridings’ vocal runs as a synth that goes from the left to right channel in the post-chorus is inspired, the addition of the children’s choir is nonsensical but as a kiss-off that is not grounded at all, hell, I’d be surprised if Freya Ridings literally didn’t build a castle out of this guy’s love, or whatever she’s saying, she has a bit of indie girl enunciation syndrome. Overall, it takes a while to get going and there a couple of nitpicks but this is pretty above average at least and it might grow on me.

#20 – “Home P***y” – D-Block Europe

These guys suck. Young Adz and Dirtbike LB, because, yes, those are their names, are pretty painfully bad singers covered in cheap auto-tune with bland trap or Afroswing beats leased off of YouTube, and have a name as a collective that they’ll probably have to legally change after Article 50 kicks in. I don’t hate these people directly, obviously, but their music bothers me mostly because British hip hop is peaking right now in critical acclaim and popularity, and there’s a bunch of these no-names like B Young and Aitch taking advantage of that. Aitch has charisma and unwarranted enthusiasm, B Young is an awful songwriter and is unintentionally pretty hilarious because of that... so what do these dudes have? Anyway, this is their third UK Top 40 hit (Second UK Top 20) and I feel like I should explain the name first, and that’s because this song is about getting all types of girls as you’re on the road touring, but the sex from your girlfriend, or alternatively, from people in your hometown, keeps you “safe”. That’s kind of creepy and also kind of... sweet(?), but who cares? This is trash appealing to the lowest common denominator with barely any thought put into it that’ll be out of the charts in four weeks and that’s being generous. What’s funny enough here to mock then? Well, they start the song with “This ain’t no love song, this is a thug song”, in a childish inflection with a lot of reverb as if it’s some kind of dramatic profound quote, before he makes an incoherent noise and the producer tag shows up, and it’s one of those tags you can get for cheap, I imagine, it’s that robotic female voice you hear on a lot of no-name producer tags. The way Young Adz says anything is in a very childish manner, so it’s always really odd when he says he’s got hitters, or just the words “home p***y” in general. It fits when he’s shouting “skrrt skrrt” ad-libs over the whole track, because his multi-tracked vocals clip and there are no dynamics here at all. Dirtbike LB gives up his rhyme scheme with an Auto-Tuned moan two bars into his verse. Here are some stupid lyrics.

Talkin’ on the net, you’ve got a voice now?

Why are you angry? It’s a sex song about people you trust, why would you go off on women you don’t trust? This is a pretty toxic attitude to have too, that people can’t speak up about relationships after they’ve ended because they stayed quiet and subservient throughout, and that’s not just women, that can be anyone in a relationship.

I hate your friends, I think they’re fake, I hope they all down

Oh, Jesus, okay, well, on that note, I’ve got to stop talking smack about Young Adz.

#11 – “So High” – MIST and Fredo

Produced by Preditah

Okay, this is another trading-bars cut from two British rappers that are very similar musically and in terms of media personality, image, popularity/status and everything else. Essentially, this is our third twin-rap cut that debuted in the Top 40 today, and it’s MIST’s second UK Top 40, first Top 20 and highest-peaking song ever, as well as Fredo’s sixth UK Top 40 and third Top 20. I’m not expecting this to be anything good but I am expecting it to be much more professional in comparison to our last song, and I’m really not surprised that I have next to nothing to say about this song, like at all. It’s not bad, and I love how Fredo flips Fred Gibson’s “Fred again” producer tag in his voice, with the vocal sample acting as the refrain being actually pretty crisp, but MIST is kind of off-beat and the lyrical content is really uninteresting, it’s about treating a woman right but still being a boss or whatever, I don’t know, it feels very much like an early-mid 2000s rap/R&B fusion. I don’t care, though, because I can’t tell MIST and Fredo from each other and wow, this write-up is short.

#5 – “Goodbyes” – Post Malone featuring Young Thug

Produced by Brian Lee and Louis Bell – Peaked at #1 in Belgium and #3 in the US

This is the new surprise smash single from Post Malone, “Goodbyes”, and I said on Twitter the day this was released that it was exactly what I expected from Post as I follow his career path, becoming less of a trap-R&B crooner and much more of a massive pop star who incorporates a lot of hip-hop flows into his brand of depressing, alcohol-induced bouts of strained vocal performances, as well as trap percussion into his often kind of bubblegum pop hits. He hasn’t walked too far away from trap yet, so I think this is where he takes himself away from the SoundCloud rap scene he burst out from, as he uses somewhat of a rap flow in the verses but it is definitely infused with melodic inflections and some syllable-stuttering that reminds me of an awful emo-pop or pop punk song that Post probably would have been into.

Me and Kurt feel the same / Too much pleasure is pain

Yeah, emo-rap guys tend to cite Kurt Cobain although I see more resemblance in Sum 41 than I do Nirvana or any grunge band for that matter. “Need to take off the e-e-edge,” “I’m addic—I’m addicted to you”, it’s one in the same. Anyway, after an unnecessary bout of silence, the song starts with some wavy, dreamy synths, before Post comes in with that “rap” flow that sounds great in that raspy voice he can put on, but that pre-chorus that slowly quiets down and drifts off at the end of each line is perfect as it shows a muddled mindset when a break-up happens, and that’s why some of the lyrics here are janky or even toxic, it’s the initial jerk reaction and all of the awful flaws that Post can think of are coming up at once because he’s confused and just wants this woman out as soon as possible so he doesn’t do something on impulse that can be dangerous, and he knows that he’s not in a place where he’s safe and he could hurt someone, he’s mentally unstable, and is almost scared for the girl he’s breaking up with, which is all heavily implied by the chorus, which by the way when that hi-hat kicks in and later the sub-bass with the contrasting synth melody, oh, man, that’s great. The drop is effective too, and I love how Post flip-flops tonally, from the silly e-e-edge refrains to precision f-strikes in such a way that is as messy as the relationship. God, and then Thugger comes in. Now, I thought he was jarring at first but after having this in rotation, oh my God, this verse is incredible. Thugger’s verse is more generic about these struggles and uses some... questionable language about slicing and dicing this woman, but those first two lines are perfect.

I want you out of my life / I want you back here tonight

It demonstrates greatly in an almost bipolar fashion how unstable this relationship and by extension, Post himself, is in this song, and pretty much sums the whole song up. Then Thugger starts belting about not wanting her to turn the TV off because he’s watching a fight, because, he’s Young Thug. The way he just yells all this mundane problems he has with this woman is cathartic in a way I didn’t initially expect it to be, and it’s actually really powerful, especially that last “YEA YEA YEAH”. It’s a bit dodgy structure-wise, though, and the mixing is actually pretty awful, with the trap percussion sounding quite cheap, Post’s wailing sometimes being overproduced, the clipping on nearly every instrument here showing how rushed it was and it’s essentially unfinished mixing and mastering-wise, but God this is a perfect song otherwise. I love this, I hope it gets a remix but when everything’s peaking in the mix, honestly, it might just add to the power of the lyrics. I’ll be talking about this more in my best list, I’ll elaborate then.

Conclusion

It should be pretty obvious that Best of the Week is going to Post Malone and Young Thug for “Goodbyes”, with Honourable Mention being Freya Ridings’ this week for “Castles”. I know, I’m surprised too, but it’s slim pickings and while I think “Truth Hurts” is probably a better song, I want to shout out the lesser-known song. My goal here is to talk about British pop music critically because there’s not many people who do as regularly as I do, and honestly I’ll be biased to British artists due to this. Lizzo is still cool though. Worst of the Week goes to D-Block Europe for “Home P***y”, with Dishonourable Mention going to... okay, well, there’s none this week and the Honourable Mention is tied with Lizzo for “Truth Hurts”. writing this on saturday january 12

today i:

- woke up at 10:30am ish. then snoozed until like 11am. then i was browsing on my phone and got sucked into tinder/CMB/hinge. i was mostly updating my hinge profile and sent out a message to two potential girls that were cool that are probably out of my league but oh well. shoot your shot right

- i got out of bed around 12:15pm and then went downstairs to eat dunkin donuts. sheena had to get her blood test taken again so dad took her there and got dunkin on the way back. i ate a raspberry filled donut and chocolate icing with sprinkles. then i made two more egg + spinach + cheese + ham on whole wheat toast and watched S2E4 of scrubs

- went back upstairs and typed up yesterday’s blog post in detail about the dermatologist appointment even though it was so short

also officially registered for the tourney! hoorah

- jwoos and i did some trip planning from 3:30-4pm. super short and just over text cause he couldn’t call in a cafe/didn’t want to be obnoxious. we just shifted everything by two weeks and everything else was the same LOL. and we saved money. booyah

- i practiced falcon in training mode doing short hop rising nairs, short hop falling nairs, bairs, bairs out of shield, nairs out of shield, and some other stuff. then i played a few games against the falcon on CPU. just to try to get warmed up i was expecting to get bodied at the tournament so i just wanted to at least be ready

- around 5pm i took a long shower, then left home around 5:40pm. dad had come back with the car by then

- i drove 20 minutes over to the venue and parked in an open parking lot across and then walked in. i checked in at registration and people were already playing doubles/friendlies. doubles started around 6pm (i got there around 6:15pm). i checked in and asked the guy to explain to me what the rules are of a set, with stage selection and character selection. then i kind of just walked around looking at people play

it was kind of socially awkward cause i was there by myself. but i read online that you can just ask people if they want to play friendlies. so i asked one guy who was just hanging out if he wanted to play and he was like sure. but he seemed kind of uninterested/annoyed i approached him. so we hopped on a set up but then the controller inputs didn’t seem to be working for some reason... so he was like “if we find another setup i’ll hit you up”. sooo rip. but then i found another kid playing by himself on a setup and was like “hey you mind if i join you?” and he was like “yeah sure”

so i played a bunch of friendlies with him. his name was james and he was like 16 years old :o he played a bunch of smash 4 before and was trying out smash ultimate. his dash dancing game was pretty good, i got baited a lot. he said he mained roy and wario i think. after like 8-10 games we stopped and i just went back to walking around the venue spectating. he taught me an infinite ledge trap with king k roll’s suction cannon which was interesting. and it only works on pokemon stadium so that’s good to know. i ate a granola bar i brought cause i wasn’t sure when i’d have time to eat. also i gave deepak and tyrone the stream link and they saw me on camera LOOOOL

- singles bracket started around 8pm. my first match was up against a megaman. i was expecting to get 0-2′ed cause i was going in with falcon and falcon is not great with projectiles. i lost the first game. then i actually won the second game. when i got the last stock during the game i was like... ??? holy shit LOL. now i can lose the 3rd game with dignity. and so i lost the third game and the set ended 1-2 so i got put into loser’s bracket. that was still pretty cool though. we did the rock paper scissors thing and did stage banning and such

i waited around for maybe 40 minutes until i got set up with someone in loser’s bracket. i could’ve gotten wawa and eaten dinner :p i was waiting from like 8:40-9:20 according to my chat with deepak and tyrone. they asked me to wave on cam and saw me waving on twitch lmao. i just kind of watched the matchups on stream while waiting

then my second set in loser’s bracket i played against a guy named james who used snake. i lost the first game, but then the second game i won. i was surprised i was able to win a game and was expecting to lose the third game like i did the first set to the megaman. then in the third game he switched things up to lucina because the matchup against snake with falcon was in my favor (at least for edge guarding). i got the first stock off of him and i think he felt a bit rushed and accidentally sd’ed his last two stocks edge guarding me :/ it was still in good fun though, he seemed a bit annoyed but we talked afterwards and it was fine :p

i waited around for maybe another 30 minutes and then got matched up against a zelda. he was a really friendly guy named duncan. falcon against zelda also isn’t that great of a matchup in my favor so i was expecting to lose this set. i lost the first game because he was using the knight and side b to edge guard me really well. when i approached him his f-tilts were also getting me a lot. but then i slowed down and took my time, waiting to find openings and then i actually won the second game. i was surprised again that i won a game. then in the third game, i won as well, taking my time to slow down and find punishes! duncan was really friendly and we hopped off the set up

i waited another 30 minutes to play the next person in loser’s bracket, who’d be determined by two people playing on stream. it was a megaman vs incineroar. i was hoping the incineroar lost so i could play incineroar because my matchup against megaman with falcon is just not great. to my luck, the megaman lost so i was going to go up against him :p

around 10:30pm we started playing, the guy’s name was junior. we played the first game and surprisingly i won. i was so confused. but it was still a close game. the second game he adapted a bit more to my gameplay and although it was a close game, he won. then in the third game, i started overextending trying to get back to stage with an aerial when i should’ve just gone for ledge (i think i was starting to get impatient when i should’ve just slowed down). he also started avoiding my grabs better with his aerials, so i lost the third game as well :’( so i lost the set 1-2

i was knocked out but had a good run. lost the first set, won two sets, then lost the second set (double elimination). i talked with junior afterwards though, he was really friendly. he said i had a good falcon for starting out at my first tournament and the way to get better is to just continue practicing on my own and continue playing against other people at these weeklies. he told me about the fb page to follow and how tight the community is, which is great to hear. he suggested i stick around for friendlies cause that’s how you learn stuff by playing other people (which is also what i read online). what a cool dude

so i walked around for a bit after i lost the set (it was around 11pm by now). i found a guy named muhammad. we played a bunch of friendlies until 12am. i used falcon for a bit, then snake, then ganondorf. we were just kind of messing around. he played young link, little mac, lucina. i think we were on the same level of gameplay. we had some good mixups against each other. he also told me how to DI out of young link’s grounded up b (by DI-ing against the way he’s facing). it was really cool and fun. i feel like i learned a lot from friendlies than i did playing the sets to be honest. cause i talked with james and muhammad while we were playing whereas sets you play and then leave. it was pretty dope though

- around 12am i called it quits and they were streaming winner’s semis or winner’s grand finals. i said bye to junior and john and then drove home

- stopped by wawa to get a club sandwich for dinner LOL and get some gas for the car. then came home and watched an episode of scrubs S2E5 and also ate a dunkin donut. sheena came downstairs and talked to me a bit about a mini existential crisis she was realizing (everything that we do is built upon everything other people have built). she also told me about her blood test results and how they found that some hormones were being produced more that may lead to anxiety, depression and mood swings. so it seemed more like a biological thing that is treatable and i think she was in a really good mood knowing that fact

- went to sleep around 1:30 or 2am, feeling content with the day. i looked back on the bracket to see how i did and apparently placed 33rd out of 98 attendees. i’m definitely going back to the tournament next week. so cool :D

This is what happened when Lizzy and Shiro made plans for bowling.

(( OOC: Sorry, for posting this after so long. We had unexpected plans pop up and were not able to role-play. This happened the day before Lizzy’s nose job. Also, excuse our role-play skills. We are not the best. Hope you guys like it. Sorry again. ))

At around 4, Shiro arrived at Lizzy's drive way, waiting for Liz. Incase Liz did not notice the car, Shiro texted her that she arrived. After about 7 minutes, the door of the house started to open and Lizzy ran out

"Sorry I'm late I had to publically kink shame Jamie" Lizzy explained

"So how do you feel about dogs"

With one elbow out of the window, " Dogs....what do you mean?? I am fine with dogs.....why??" Shiro was puzzled.

"Well I was thinking, 'you know dogs are great. I love dogs. And there is an animal shelter filled with dogs nearby.' so yeah. we should go look at dogs" Lizzy rambled, getting into Shiro's car

Still in the driveway, Shiro looked the directions to the nearest animal shelter. She had no problem with dogs. All she wants is to waste time before going bowling. " You can control the music. If you want, you maybe won't like the songs that I listen to." Shiro said as she handed Liz the aux cord.

"Whoo, fun times, i'm playing garbage so feel free to take away my privilege." Lizzy said. Being the little shit she is, she started playing hell fire from the hunchback of notre dame

For the whole 20 minutes, songs from the Hunchback of Notre Dame were playing. Lizzy seem to be having a blast just listening to the songs. As for Shiro, she did not care the least bit. Actually, Shiro was into the songs and wanted now to watch that movie. Shiro never watched any Disney movies except Mulan. They finally reached the animal shelter,and Lizzy was out the car in seconds.

"Are you excited to see puppies cause i am excited to see puppies best early birthday ever!" Lizzy shrieked like the child she was.

Shiro paused just as she was closing her door. "Your birthday is coming. I guess this is a early birthday present from me. When is it actually??" She asked then closed the driver's side door, locked her car, and slipped her key in her jacket pocket.

"It's the 20th. But yeah. You know" Lizzy said, skipping toward the entrance

As we entered the building, a old woman with blonde hair at the reception desk and the smell of dog food greeted us. " We..." Shiro was cut off by Liz who was practically bouncing up and down ready to meet some puppies.

"I WANT A PUPPY WHERE ARE THE PUPPIES?"

Patting Liz's head to calm the fuck down, " What she means is we want to meet some puppies if possible?" The receptionist told us to follow her, and she lead them to a glass room filled with puppies. Liz was about to shove the old woman out the way and knock the door down for some puppies. Before she could Shiro stepped in front of her and Liz's face was smashed into Shiro's shoulder. " Calm down a little. It's just puppies." Shiro scolded her before they stepped into the room.\

"There is no such thing as just puppies shiro they are holy beings" Lizzy huffed

"Really. Holy Beings holy beings. Well anyways we have a hour till bowling. Have fun." Shiro commented sarcastically as she was swarmed by the tiny holy beings.

Spoiler alert: Lizzy did have fun.

She was covered in a pile of puppies. How could it not be fun?

At one point, Shiro was overpowered by the holy beings and was being trampled over on the floor. Somehow, a chubby blonde puppy nested in Shiro's jacket hood. When Shiro got up on her left shoulder was the head of said puppy. It was just chilling there with its tongue out. " Liz, look isn't this puppy cute? I'm gonna take a picture." Shiro asked as she got her phone out.

"Or you could take it home. Just saying" Lizzy suggested. she studied each puppy and tried to figure out which one would be the easiest to sneak out

"We could hide one in my jacket and leave. But that is wrong." Shiro replied.

"that's be wrong" Lizzy muttered in a poor imitation of Shiro

Just after she took a photo of her and puppy. Shiro noticed the time. It was 5:27. " We should go now. It will take us about 30 minutes to arrive at the alley. Right now, the time is 5:27. And help me take one of the holy beings out of my hood, please." Shiro requested

Lizzy pouted but complied with the request

Lizzy was so sure she would have been able to steal a puppy

After about 30 minutes of arguing how to steal a puppy in Shiro's car, they finally arrived at the bowling alley. Shiro was the one who did the talking at the desk while Liz was trying to find a bowling ball she could hold. Shiro got her bowling shoes. " Liz, what size bowling shoes do you wear?" she shouted loud enough that it could reach Lizzy.

"9's" Lizzy chirped. Lizzy was glaring at the bowling balls with a look of false seriousness. "Do you think we could steal one of these?

Shiro payed for everything. Grabbing their shoes, she rushed over to Liz. " Well, it is possible.... Wait .. Why do you want to steal it?" Shiro questioned. "Our alley is number 5."

"murder" Lizzy whispered, making direct eye contact with shiro. She then giggle, booped Shiro's nose, and skipped off to their alley.

Shiro was just standing there for a moment with the weirdest expression then headed over to Liz. When she reached, Liz was typing in our names. Shiro found a spot to sit and started to change shoes after she set Liz's shoes beside her. Wanting to add a little pressure to the game, " Yo. Lizzy, do you want to make a bet?"

"what kind of bet" Lizzy asked with a look of wide eyed innocence. Little did Shiro know, something wicked this way comes. And it's name was Elizabeth

"Well, you know the classic bet. Where the winner makes the loser do whatever they want. Why not make it inter..esting? The winner makes the loser do whatever they want for a week and has to posted what and how they do it on Tum..b..lr. " Shiro offered with a quiet and persuading tone as she inched closer towards Liz to intensify the pressure with a smirk on her face.

"Well, i guess that couldn't hurt Shiro. Do you want to start?" Lizzy batted her doe eyes at Shiro and made a gesture towards the alley.

"Let the games begin" Shiro said confidently as she stood up and glared at the pins waiting to be toppled over.

"go easy on me, its my birthday" Lizzy pleaded.

" I can't and won't. It's a game. There is no holding back." Shiro was serious and had her game face on.

"Ok Edgelord time to chill. Fine, make the birthday girl cry. See if i care." Lizzy huffed. She looked just a little pathetic with her braids and pastel blue dress. like a ugly version of those pouting little girls in motivational posters.

Before finding the perfect bowling ball, Shiro took off her maroon jacket which revealed a dark purple tank top with Lilo and Stitch on it. Her tank top was tucked in with high-waisted black jeans and a white belt. Shiro's hair was down like always. After about 5 minutes, she found the perfect ball, and Liz was the first one to go.

Lizzy scanned the bowling balls before picking up a navy.

She took a deep breath before rolling. She managed to down 7. She shot Shiro a wide grin.

Lizzy waited to roll before knocking two more down. She did a slightly dorky happy dance before turning back to Shiro. "Its your turn hot stuff" Lizzy grinned before plopping down on a seat.

"Hot stuff." Shiro repeated. Waiting for the pins to realign, Shiro was stretching out her right shoulder. Grabbing a ball, she was ready. "Stance, trajectory, force, speed, and curves" Shiro was whispering this to herself as she rolled the ball. The ball also hit 7 pins. Glancing back at Liz with a smirk, she rolled again and 3 pins were knocked out. "Spareee" Shiro whispered when Liz and she passed each other.

"You're a child." Lizzy called behind her. Little miss competitive wouldn't get to rain on her parade. Lizzy rolled and got an 4. She frowned but waited for her ball again none the less. She rolled a 5 next and squealed happily.

"I am no child. I don't know about you." Shiro remarked. With the same ball, she knocked down 9 pins but could not finish the last one. Putting her hands in her jean's pocket, Shiro strolled back to her sit while whistling.

"Excuse me, but I'm almost 15, thank you." Lizzy answered idly. Lizzy thought about rubbing that last pin in her face but decided against it. Lizzy rolled an 6 and managed to get 3 more afterwards. She smiled at the score and pranced back to her seat.

"You are excused. To add, I am turning 17 next month. For your information." Shiro added. Strolling to get her ball, she decided to change which ball to use. With the new ball, Shiro scored a strike. Slowly turning with a smirk on her face, she with hand motions portrayed as if she had a cowboy hat on and pulled it down. "Howdy" Shiro said just for fun. She is not a cowboy.

"you are a child." Lizzy huffed

Lizzy rolled a 8 and scored a spare afterwards. She, an adult, stuck her tongue out at Shiro

Sighing because she was fed up of being called a child, Shiro asked, "Why not we talk about something else?" Not looking or paying attention at which ball she chose, Shiro took down 2 pins then 3 pin

" Ok. I want to be a ninja turtle when I grow up." Lizzy said.

She rolled a 7 and then a 1.

" Do mean turn into a genetically modified turtle or have a suit?" Shiro questioned as Liz sat back down.

Standing up and grabbing the right ball, she rolled a 5 and then a 3.

"turn into a genetically altered turtle. Why would you half ass that?" Lizzy asked

Lizzy rolled a 7 then missed.

" Well, I was not sure what you meant, so I said all ways that you could become a ninja turtle. Anyways, which ninja turtle would you be or be a new addition. ? " Shiro puffed out and scored a strike.

" well, I relate to Donnie on an emotional level, but i'd be a new addition." Lizzy chattered as she rolled. Drat. a four. She managed to knock another pin down

After knocking 7 down then missing, "What would be your name? Lizzy or another name?"

Probably Eliza to stick with the aesthetic" Lizzy muttered. STRIKE LIZZY MADE A STRIKE

"Nice going" Shiro offered a high five but was declined. "Just wondering, why do a lot of people do things that is based on an aesthetic?" Shiro was walking backwards asking that question. She grabbed the right ball and knocked 8 down. " I mean you don't have to stick with it." Shiro rolled again and managed to hit one more pin.

Lizzy, who was too busy celebrating to even take notice of Shiro, rolled. "stick with what?" Lizzy asked before scoring a 8. she hit the last two and took back her seat.

"Why do people decide on things that stick with aesthetic?' Shiro repeated while moonwalking to the ball return. This was the second to last frame. Shiro had to be serious because she did not want to lose the bet. Thankfully, she knocked down all 10 pins.

"To stick with the aesthetic. As a faithful aesthetic hoe, you gotta stay faithful man." Lizzy answered. She rolled and landed a 9. She missed the next pin.

"What the fuck do you mean?" Shiro whispered to herself. Confused, she hit pin 5 pins then 1 pin.

"Don't question it." Lizzy chirped.

Rushing over to see the scoreboard, it said that "Edgelord Won!" From behind Shiro, Liz was giggling. Shiro never payed attention to the scoreboard because where is the fun in that.Turning around " You put my name as Edgelord. Really. I am no lord of the edge. Anyways, I won and you lost. Now what will you have to do for a week everyday?" Shiro first scolded her then intimidated her.

"I mean ok man but i'll have a reconstructed nose so I won't be able to do much." Lizzy said with a shrug.

Shrio's stomach growled as she was putting her jacket back on and changing her shoes. "First let's eat. Where do you want to go? Afterwards, We gotta get some brownies and cinnamon rolls.''

"I like pasta. Know any good places?"

" Do you want fancy restaurant food or like fast food kinda?" Shiro replied as they gave their shoes back and left the bowling alley.

"Fast food. No need to spend forever right?" Lizzy said as they walked up to Shiro's car.

"Ummm...How about Fazoli's? I heard they have very good pasta." Shiro offered while turning her car on.

"I'm down" Lizzy said while bucking up. She didn't know what Fazoli's was but it sounded good

'' Okay. Fazoli's it is. Now, who will control the music??"

"ME" Lizzy shrieked as she put on Be More chill

" This is a musical, right?" Shiro really did not listen to the songs instead focused on driving.

"Yeah. Its about a computer that lives in his head. Its pretty good and Michael is the best character."

" A computer that lives in someone's head...nice..What is the name of this musical?" Shiro asked as she took a sharp left turn.

"Be More Chill. I have Rocky Horror if you'd prefer." Lizzy offered.

"This is fine." After 15 minutes, we finally reached a plaza that had Fazoli's in it.

"Whoo! Pasta!" Lizzy cheered as she hopped out of the car.

Shiro had the Penne with creamy Basil Chicken, and Lizzy had the Twice-Baked Lasagna. The food was very good. Liz, taking advantage that Shiro was paying, order more food and said that she would eat it later. Shiro thought that Liz loves this place so much, so she is planning her meals for days to come. " After ordering so much, are you just a little guilty that I have to pay for all of this?" Shiro questioned her while leaving the restaurant.

"I could contribute if you want"

'' It's fine. I was just testing you. By the way, I am rich like Laura, but I do not spend it like her. I make more than spend." Shiro countered.

"Ha, RIP. I'd think being rich would SUCK" Lizzy spazzed.

" Are you full now or have room for dessert?"

"I always have room for dessert." Lizzy said with a way to serious look.

"Okay.. conveniently there is a bakery right there" Shiro pointed at a shop that was in the plaza.

"Dude i am so excited for cinnamon rolls."

Stopping Liz from running off, "First let's put this in the car. Here give it to me and you can go admire the sweets. I will be right there." Shiro said as she took the takeout bag from Liz's hands.

Lizzy hopped into the bakery and completely disregarded Shiro's request to stay by the door. "Hello!" Lizzy greeted the person at the counter. "I'd like two cinnamon rolls and two brownies please!"

Shiro put the takeout in the back of the car and strapped a seat belt around it ,for safety measures. Then, she walked over to the bakery and saw that Liz was already eating a cinnamon roll. " Did you get some for me or is that all you?" Shiro asked while scanning over what the bakery had to offer.

"I ordered two. I'm decent" Lizzy said with a mouthful of cinnamon roll

While scanning over the sweets, Shiro's eyes found some macarons. "Yeah...I am gonna get some macarons." Glaring at the flavors, the person who was at the counter asked what she wanted. " May I have 4 pistachio, 4 almond, and 2 vanilla macarons?" Walking back Liz gave me a weird expression, " Half of these are for my mom. We love macarons!" Shiro said excitedly.

While at the bakery, Lizzy and Shiro discussed what should the bet be for Lizzy. Somehow, they ended up devising a plan to steal a holy being (puppy) from the shelter. It was not foolproof. In the end, they spent about a hour there. On the way to Lizzy’s house, Liz fell asleep in Shiro’s car. When they reached Lizzy’s house, Lizzy gave Shiro a hug and thanked her for that day. Reminder, the dare was never finalized. Shiro decided to reveal the dare a later time. First reason, she wanted to wait so that Liz will feel up to the challenge. She is getting a nose job. Second, Shiro had no idea what the dare should be. The suspense continues.
