So, I only started keeping track about a third of the way through Diabolical Box so I'm missing any wisdom from the beginning of that game/Curious Village, but according to Professor Layton and Luke, a true gentleman...
Pays attention to his manners in every setting
Does not pry deeply into other's affairs
Always remembers to treat a lady with kindness and respect
Never takes off his hat
Never forces a lady to say more than she wants to
Always helps a lady in trouble (Get ready, they say this one in like fifty different ways)
Helps those in need
Helps a cat in need
Shouldn't glare at people as if he wants to hit them in the face
Should not go around threatening people with knives
Should not take what does not belong to him
Never, ever makes a lady cry
Admits his mistake rather than trying to cover it up with an unconvincing excuse
Always fights for the truth
Always remains kind when conversing with a lady
Can't walk around with his head bare
If your future self has become obsessed with completing a time machine and has been kidnapping scientists from the past, then stopping your future self is your duty as a true gentleman
Keeps his promises and solves the problem
Always express gratitude for the. hospitality of others
Never plays his ace in the hole until absolutely necessary
Again, if your future self has turned evil, you must meet that challenge and stop him
Keeps his secrets
Has his hobbies
(As an aside, the violin is a very gentlemanly pursuit)
Cannot allow another to follow you into a dangerous situation
Keeps calm and carries on, even under duress
Never rushes a lady
Breaks into a house if he believes a young girl could be in danger
Always keeps his promises
Has good penmanship
Always keeps his word
Rarely resorts to punchlines
Is patient
Shows gratitude to one's teachers
When crafting a solution, always prefers the elegant one
Never refuses a request to help an old friend
Never abandons someone in need
Never neglects those in need
Finds peaceful solutions to potentially violent situations
Isn't suited for rides like a carousel
Never wipes dirty hands on his clothes
Must not jump over fences
Always obeys the highway code
Would never give a false statement to a police officer
Admires a fine collection of gloves
Always remains positive
Does not act arrogantly in the face of tradition
Treats his guests with the utmost hospitality
Always invests in a time piece
Conversely, a lady...
Never keeps a gentleman waiting
Always demonstrates good humor
Solves puzzles

Sooo... I just watched Labyrinth, and I remember seeing some posts of yours talking about how it's good and similar to other stories (like OTGW). And in some ways, I see that? But also like.... I need a little help making any sense of it, lol
Sorry, I know this is super random, but I was just curious to find out why you like it and what you see in it, so I thought I'd ask!
Of course, I'm happy to talk about Labyrinth! :) Thank you for the ask!
(Disclaimer that I haven't watched it in a year or two, but I still remember it fairly well.)
In terms of similarity to OTGW: both stories center on a teenage protagonist who is a dreamer, but too caught up in themselves, and to some extent running away from their life. This manifests PARTICULARLY in their neglected and/or rejected responsibility to their younger half-brother. They end up in a liminal, otherworldly space that operates on much more narrative logic than they're used to, and can only save their lives/souls and make it home again by saving said younger brothers first.
Sarah rejects her brother at the beginning of her story, while Wirt abandons his care for Greg near the end, but you can see the similar beats there, right? They're both dealing with normal teenage stress + the stress of parental divorce (probably) and remarriage, and seeing their younger brothers as an emblem of Everything Wrong In Their Lives. In reality, their younger brothers are forcing them to live in reality, where they have duties and connections to other people, and can only find maturity/fulfillment through embracing that.
Jareth and the Beast are also very similar figures, I think; Jareth is a more seductive tempter figure, playing to Sarah's ego and to romance tropes, while the Beast plays with hope and despair. But they are both trickster figures who use bargains -- seeming windows of hope -- to entrap vulnerable mortals (Wirt and Greg, in the Beast's case).
AND. Both Jareth and the Beast are defeated by someone calling them out as empty and powerless! Wirt says, "this is dumb," and demolishes the Beast's entire facade -- he's not keeping souls in the lantern, he's the one dependent on the lantern, and he can't keep Wirt or Greg if they're ready to go home. Sarah's "You have no power over me" has the exact same weight -- it's wrapped up in theatrics of these being Specific Magic Words, but it's the meaning of them that shatters Jareth's power and sends her and Toby home.
In both stories, evil tries very, very hard to convince these kids that they need it. Jareth wraps it up in a lot more complicated temptations -- I'll make you happy, I'll make you powerful, I'll give you glamorous parties and material comfort and everything you ever wanted if you fall down and worship me -- while the Beast sticks to a brute-force message of despair, with the crumbs he offers as all that there is -- "There is only my way." But in both cases, the message is: you need me.
And in both stories the protagonists go: No. I don't need you. I don't need anything from you. In fact, you have nothing to give.
At which point it's revealed that evil needed them. Needed them to buy into its strength, its ability, its substance -- or it doesn't have any. It crumbles away, and they go home.
...So! Those are the big similarities between them, I think, for me? I like Labyrinth, as its own movie, because I like the classic fairy-tale structure of "the fairies/goblins/elves took my loved one because I messed up, and now I gotta get them back the hard way." I love the atmosphere of the Labyrinth and Sarah's friends (though your mileage may definitely vary on this movie, depending on your tolerance for Henson Creations ;P). I love Sarah, who messes up, but who is still plucky and brave and kind through most of her trials! The friendship between her and Hoggle (...a Woodsman parallel?) is my favorite. And while I'm very much in the minority of this fandom in not really feeling Jareth's appeal, as a villain I think David Bowie does an excellent, glittery job. And we get music.

I am legit sobbing over this images I AM NOT OKAY
When a ship takes over my life that even just seeing the actors together makes me feel so many things
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Context: This are the live actions actors for Quan Yizhen and Yin Yu. The one with the hat in the first pic and glasses in the second one is Yin Yu’s actor (Wang Jia Yu), while the one being carried in the first and the one taking the pic in the second one is Quan Yizhen’s (Liu Zi Rui/Ray Liu)
The second pic is from Liu Zi Rui’s weibo while the first one is (from what I am assuming) a fan account for Liu Zi Rui.
Tbh, at this point I just want Eternal Faith to release just for the QuanYin crumbs. I am starving over here and just need some QuanYin content in my life.
I would also love it if any fan artists decide to draw these as QuanYin. Especially the first pic

Just to elaborate on why I think purgatory was enough of a punishment; I believe it acted as an "eye for an eye" for all of the lambs the bishops killed. In whatever time it took for them to be released from purgatory, I would wager that the bishops (collectively) died once for every life they took. And if that number was not equal, the brutality of the bishop's death loops would certainly make up for it. With the combination of purgatory, the mental consequences afterwards, and the newfound permanence of the Bishops' injuries/disabilities, I consider them to have served their sentence. I don't feel the need to torment them once they are indoctrinated, unless they give me a reason to. And I project this belief onto my Lamb as well.

I get the whole thing about self-deprecating jokes and things not being laughing matters and there are some really fine lines there. And that this is probably some cultural or generational thing, snd so on.
But there's something so deeply normalizing and freeing about taking the piss out of something that feels like it should ruin you.

It is fun and interesting when even heroes do bad things or do bad things with good intentions because it makes them more human and psychologically complex and makes more story happen. I'll never understand members of the audience who want to live in moral paradise where nothing ever goes wrong and only evil people ever do the wrong thing and once you kill all the evil people evil stops existing and to ever dare insinuate heroes could do wrong is blasphemy and "shifting the blame". I'm not playing that game. It's not about which character has the mandate of heaven.
I just don't get it and I will never get it. Is it fear? Is it a desire for absolute simplicity? Is it my fantasy bristling against theirs? Is it the inability to win an online argument about your character being the most moral and pure in the whole world? Because it seems to me it often comes down to "xyz villain is more evil, stop coping" which is like... okay... if you have a flat view of storytelling, sure (oh God, I used to get into so many arguments about daring to compare Cinder-Pyrrha and Jaune-Penny). Of course, the most fun thing about I/ronwood's character arc is that is exactly his whole deal in relation to Salem, and exactly how he justifies what he does, which is kind of ironic in how people miss the point. But I wasn't even vagueing about him in the first place! I just remembered why I love R/WBY because this is an actual idea explored in the story. I love storytelling.

if i thought the witcher was painfully realistic. i was wrong. it is a very clear fairytale that comforts and soothes. even in its realistic take on the genre, it inspires, even in its tragedy, it comforts.
evil is defeated epically in a final battle in the darkness, the valiant heroes fall together, the lovers die united, and all pass into legend and are remembered for ever and ever. and the spirit of our hero returns now and again to save and deliver us from evil… they become legend and in that legend they are immortal…
#txt#the witcher books#OK HUSSITE TRILOGY SPOILERS IN TAGS:#like i cant say that evil WASNT defeated in the hussite trilogy because he definitely was but not in an epic final battle but#the fact that its like in the very penultimate bit and its not reynevan who does it but his NIECE it is just so…#we came all this way and there was no ultimate showdown#i mean there kind of was but not in a big castle but in some plains with a windmill and#it wasnt really a final battle but a kill-eachothers-girlfriends bit#birkart didnt even get his hands NEAR samson before he died#scharley and reynevan just left… at the end… just like in the beginning of the first book EXCEPT NOT because everything has changed them#well has changed reynevan. kind of dandelion and geralt in that way as the second man remains a constant#reynevan no longer being like a young man but a. man. but this didnt come with grand heroism and valour. it just came with. pain and#the eventual wearing down and tarnishing of his zeal and belief and love#thats … literally so fucking dark but also so realistic and it scares me lmaooooo#and people say the witcher was anticlimatic and sad at the end LMAOOOO OHHHH NOOOOO#lux perpetua like damn that dude really was walking in darkness groping along like a blind man after losing his eternal light#ohhhhh i get it now so god has abandoned us and he also never really existed ohhh okay#his love died as he was helpless to save her and he didnt even avenge his brother and his friend trio crumpled#like like. just trying to put this all into perspective

Yuki:Yes.
Hyunwoo:What are those like?
Yuki:Christmas is a great time.
Hyunwoo:You know, I should explain why I have the feelings I have about christmas.
Yuki:Might be a stupid question, but do you not have a korean santa?
Hyunwoo:I often bring up my parents, but my mother announced she was leaving my father on christmas morning.

The Soul who Sins will Die
Just as we will die because of Adam, we will be raised to life because of Christ.

Tag drop: Guizhong (don't mind me re-dropping this with the fixed ones, shh)
#tag drop#[ guizhong. ] many things only seem to surface beneath the moon's poignant glow. wherever its light shines; the heart is wont to follow.#[ guizhong: ic. ] wherever her spirit may be among the countless grains of sand and specks of dust between the harbor and the mountains.#[ guizhong: inquiries. ] hmph. she always had a way with words.#[ guizhong: countenance. ] and because they are afraid; they try so hard to become more intelligent. this i understand.#[ guizhong: introspection. ] although she did not live to see the splendid sights of today: she was as much a hero as any other.#[ guizhong: etc. ] it took an elaborate treasure hunt to preserve the commandments that were once the lifeblood of a whole civilization.#[ guizhong: mortals. ] at their full potential; they could be her equal. a human who has as much to teach an adeptus as to learn from them.#[ guizhong: guili plains. ] as guizhong once said: “it takes every blade of grass and every flower to make a homeland.”#[ guizhong: liyue. ] perhaps she will look at the liyue of today and steal a smile when she sees the prosperous land that it has become.#[ guizhong: realm of clouds. ] a voyage to a sanguine sky.#[ guizhong: mechanical arts. ] in one's heart; i knew that she was indeed the superior talent in the mechanical arts.#[ guizhong: glaze lilies. ] they were far more abundant back then. entire fields would appear to the eye as a veritable sea of flowers.#[ guizhong: adepti. ] until the moon set and the sun rose. and only then would the banquet finally come to an end.#[ guizhong: morax. ] whoever it was that revered her so much was very clever indeed.#[ guizhong: morax. ] when our eyes meet; eternity is defined. [ delusionaid. ]#[ guizhong: xiao. ] if darkness comes; colors you with fear; be still and know that i'm with you and i will say your name. [ apocryphis. ]#[ guizhong: marchosius. ] who would dare snub the stove god and his wondrous creations? at the sight of him: we would drop any argument.#[ guizhong: streetward rambler. ] it almost felt like she was back again. sitting right there on the stone stool next to me; chatting away.#[ guizhong: cloud retainer. ] we each had our ideals; and neither one of us would yield to the other.#[ guizhong: osial. ] she would disrupt the silence around them with a hum; as if to sing to the harmony of the water. was this his song?#[ guizhong: sea gazer. ] he was quite the braggart when it came to those collectibles he was so fond of; he always loved to show them off.#[ guizhong: skybracer. ] to who lived by the mountain; he was their savior. in fact; they thought higher of him than the lord of geo.#[ guizhong: ganyu. ] if we planted flowers in the guili plains; do you think that one day we'd be able to recreate the sea of glaze lilies?#[ guizhong: v. descension. ] she descended whose dominion was over dust; and whose reach shrouded the skies for thousands of miles around.#[ guizhong: v. guili assembly. ] it's great to have it back but i want to go back to the world. and start with guili plains.#[ guizhong: v. archon war. ] they fought upon the plains; where black dust choked the heavens and a thousand rocks splintered.#[ guizhong: v. present. ] all wrapped up in a city that has existed for many moons to date. all these things: they are why people chase it.#[ guizhong: meta. ] her manuscripts lie unfinished in her abode. the blank pages give cause for contemplation on what might have been.
