This coord is from March of 2023. Another back-log post haha. Some friends and I went to a Pokemon themed maid cafe/afternoon tea at a local-ish cafe that does little themed maid events with a local idol group. They had also done a really cool Sailor Moon one we went to around a year before this that I sadly don't have coord pics from! I decided on this kinda punky coord with my heart shaped putumayo eyepatch cus I didn't really have anything on theme so I just went for something I liked!
Should I be adding coord rundows to these?

Sweet Lolita through the years
Part 1: Late 90s-2005 (ish) “Oldschool”
Oldschool sweet is the first truly recognizable form of sweet Lolita
Though during the Oldschool era the substyles had far more crossover and less individual traits I think there’s just enough that you still label coords from the time. When most people think of Oldschool they think of a solid color main piece with lace topped otks and a rectangle headdress… but Oldschool is so much more than that.

Oldschool in general was simpler, though some brands like Metamorphose Temps De Fille , Emily Temple Cute, and baby the stars shine bright were already making prints
Printed fabrics of fruits or florals were very common, but you did see a good amount of screen printed and appliquéd pieces coming out at the time too. Some very common sweet motifs in the oldschool era were:
•cats
•fruit
•alice in wonderland
•bunnies / rabbits
•bears
•alphabet / letter prints
•music notes
•hearts
The closer to the end of the identifiable oldschool era the more prints became popular! Though through most of the 2000’s prints would remain more minimal with the focus being on more structural elements like lace, bows, construction, and interesting fabric choices.
Due to the image limit on tumblr here’s a link to the correct sorting to see examples on lolibrary with examples of some early sweet prints and patterns. If you click the link on any of these items you’ll be able to view their lolibrary entries as well if available
Color balance wasn’t considered as highly as it is today, the overall vibe of Coords was more chaotic and experimental. A very make do attitude can be seen in many street snaps.

Patterned main pieces were another popular alternative to prints, things like gingham, stripes, tartan/plaid.

Bag choices were pretty varied, honestly in a lot of oldschool sweet coords people would use unique bags as the visual interest / focal point. You can already see that in someone of the coords above. Faux leather shaped bags like btssb’s heart bags weren’t very popular yet. A few brands had put out heart bags, such as milk, but they were much simpler and often real leather in limited colors. You also didn’t see usakumyas in their modern iteration until well into the 2000’s towards the 2010’s. Plush bags of the era did not have the same clean marketable look. Some common / popular bags were:
-basket / wicker purses
-plush animal bags
-tote bags
-matching fabric bags
-leather handbags
-designer handbags

Shoes at the time were much chunkier and much less cutesy even in sweet styles. Tea parties didn’t exist until a good deal past this time period- honestly most popular modern Lolita shoe styles weren’t really seen. Real leather was far more common, in a much more limited pallet. When you did see colored shoes they typically weren’t used to color balance a coord like we do now a days. A lot of different styles were worn though, including:
-Mary Jane’s
-Platforms
-Rocking horse shoes
-Boots
-Oxfords
-sandals

Socks are often overlooked in oldschool. I’ve seen so many people say printed socks weren’t worn even though they absolutely were and many brands made them. Sure, lace topped otks were the trend and the most popular option but simple motif printed socks absolutely existed and were worn!

Headpieces were one of the most varied category. So many different styles and kinds were worn.
-mini crowns
-hair ribbons
-hats
-bows
-canotiers
-mini hats
-lace headdresses

Jewelry / Accessories were one area that Oldschool definitely was simpler. However brands were absolutely making both jewelry and other accessories. Plain metal necklaces with various motifs were common, lace chokers, faux collars, capes, ties, and though extremely uncommon you do sometimes run across wrist cuffs. Hopefully there’s more of an effort to start documenting jewelry and accessories from this time since it’s quite lacking

Makeup and hair were something that like all eras of Lolita followed the over all cultural trends of the time. More minimal make or simple 90’s - early 2000’s makeup is seen often. As for hair there’s so many different styles that really it would be impossible to list them all. In older magazines there’s often sections with hair tutorials and makeup tutorials!

Common lace styles included Torchon, Cotton, Eyelet, and Raschel. Many different trims and such were used in addition to these.

GUIDE TO LOLITA VS HIME GYARU
I’m going to break down the differences of Sweet+Old school Lolita and Hime Gyaru for any J-fashion enthusiasts In this post.

At first glance these styles can look very similar with the joint goal of looking like a feminine “aristo doll” in rebellion of social norms of conformity when it comes to getting dressed but appearance wise they are different.
( I’m only going to talk about the visual differences here but there are other great sources for history )
Silhouette —
Lolita: What makes Lolita fashion so recognisable is the cupcake silhouette of the petticoat underneath the skirt, how the skirt has lots of volume at the top and stops 1/3 down leaving the the rest of the skirt’s curve to slow down.
Hime Gyaru: Hime Gyaru dresses and blouses do not have petticoats or if they do they are thin and flat. Because of the babydoll style of the dresses they have a more loose fit.
Colours —
Lolita: In Sweet styles the colour palette of most coords are pastels with pink, blue, yellow, purple and some green, Old school has more bold colours with darker reds, greens, pinks, whites, blacks and blues but with white accents with lace.
Hime Gyaru: Colour palettes are relatively the same for every Hime Gyaru coord with cold pinks and white with occasional accents of black.
Modesty—
Lolita: Most Lolitas wear a blouse underneath their dresses but in summertime some Lolitas wear their dresses with out a blouse. Their skirts tend to be above knee height and will wear knee or thigh high socks or patterned tights.
Hime Gyaru: Hime Gyaru tends to show more of the shoulders because of low necklines. The skirt normally reaches its end before the end of the hand and socks normally aren’t prevalent in Hime Gyaru fashion.
Prints —
Lolita: With Sweet Lolita prints you can find florals, animals, food, drinks and sometimes buildings. With Old school you can find prints like plaid and tartan. It is important to note that it’s mainly split down the middle with Lolita dresses having prints or being plain.
Hime Gyaru: Almost every Hime Gyaru dress will have a floral print ( this being roses ).
Misc —
Lolita: While some Lolita’s wear colourful wigs it isn’t needed for a Lolita coord. Makeup can vary from rather subtle to pink blush and gloss.
Hime Gyaru: Hime Gyaru is known for their dirty blonde Goldilocks wigs. Will commonly sport a fake tan although it may not be as dark as other Gyaru sub styles. Lipstick and blush is a light cold pink and they wear large false eyelashes. Long acrylic nails are a must.
Please note that there are exceptions to all of these and there are no rules to these styles and the most important thing is having fun! :))

It's February in Idol Land PriPara! And what does that mean?
Birthday Extravaganza 2025!!!
That's right, February has more PriPara birthdays than any other month:
2/5: Dorothy and Reona (twins day: futa-go) 2/9: Pepper (meat day: ni-ku) 2/13: Pinon (all Triangle bdays have 1, 2, and 3 in them) 2/22: Ushimitsu (nin nin ninja day?) 2/29: Amari and Mario (leftover day of the year)
So far for Pepper, her character parts have been released:
But Dorothy and Reona get their own birthday festival!
First of all their gatchas are up!
Plaid seems to be a common theme in the 2024-2025 birthday coords and I am here for it.
Although the twins' individual birthday coords are unique to each gatcha, they each have both of their season 2 CRs. They also have Pepper's CR and... Cosmo's for some reason? (They took out the Triangle CR... why... Cosmo's birthday is in September.)
Dorothy and Reona's birthday promises are up too!
Dorothy gets After School Heartful Dash.
While Reona gets Gamusha Ranhoi! (It amuses me how much harder Reona's birthday song goes haha.)
Something interesting I noticed. It appears the Cyalumes are different here? Could it be that Reona's birthday coord turns into Reona's CR, but her birthday t-shirt coord turns into Dorothy's CR? That's kinda funny if true.
Anyway, if you play these promises you will find the twins' respective Idol Key SCRs in the premium shops.
Also, apparently if you are lucky, you might run into Dark Dorothy on your home screen!?
You may remember her from episode 10 of Idol Land PriPara.
And finally, there is a whole new event type!?
But as this post is getting too long already, I've decided to split things up and attempt to explain this event in a second post. Stay tuned!

Someone retweeted my 2019 birthday piece of Mizuki a day or two before her birthday, and I thought "Oh, I should draw her again."
Something about this kind of coord in a simple plaid (tartan? sure) pattern on an idol is so timeless. You can't go wrong with it. 😌

i think cosplaying yuuka touhou might be fun mainly bc of the parasol aspect — i did a sculpture project in the past with an umbrella, and it seems like it would be an interesting project at the least altering an umbrella/parasol prop with the idea of suspended petals in tulle being a kinetic element
idk when this would happen though.. it should be after i work on sandy cos, since i want to make alterations to the armor and figure out wings for him (which im sure will be a pain in the ass).. it does feel like a project id find satisfaction in, but ofc its difficult to say what i enjoy
typing it out does solidify yuuka as a project after sandy though, since id have to sew her clothes by hand due to the plaid fabric... and this isnt even accounting for my catherine cos wip and my wedding coord (though the latter seems like a further and further away fantasy..)

Y’know who’s the real sneak of the alt fashion scene? Hellbunny. They’ve literally made something applicable for every style.
Currently wearing a layered skirt I got second hand and when I saw the tag I couldn’t believe it cause what do you mean the only prominent rockabilly brand made a two tiered plaid skirt that suits mori to a t? Like even lolitas have a second hand market for their coats cause they’re apparently great with egl coords??
