Now that you're more than halfway through your fic marathon, are there any fics that you want to read but seemingly don't exist? What are the gaps in terms of fan content?

ooh! thank you for the question, it's an interesting one with a maybe weird answer from me!

this fic-craving is something i've like given a weirdly passionate rant about to a friend that's only partway through the podcast: I want to see fic where Hadrian cheats on Rosana. please bear with me!

see a pattern I started to notice emerging in "Hadrian fucks Samot and/or Samothes" fics was that it would either not acknowledge Hadrian's marital status at all (tbh, fine with me), or have some throwaway line or two like "oh Rosana would be fine with this!"... those throwaway lines haunt me...

because sure. somehow, two heterosexually married people in an extremely moralizing religious context, where a significant part of their relationship on screen is Hadrian's constant absence, would totally be practicing ethical non-monogamy (sarcasm).

so like, i have a preference for the option of not mentioning Rosana at all because I am just So Not Convinced by this fanfic version of Rosana where she's totally chill with her absent husband fucking a couple gods! but yknow, the not mentioning Rosana at all is still sorta weird, when she is Hadrian's Wife! so this is what I want:

in addition to all the "i'm sad about my estranged husband, whom I have ideological disagreements with" angst that samsam have going on, and Hadrian's extreme commitment and devotion to his faith mixing with sexual desire for some super sexy gods, i want to see Hadrian grapple with his own values and desires, and have his attraction/religious fervor/duty toward Samothes and/or Samot win out over his vows to Rosana. and then make him feel super weird and guilty about that!

there's like. one fic that comes even close to what i want, and tbh I am going to have to reread it when I finish the marathon and that is Heavy by placentalmammal: Adaire pov, set in WiH, with Adaire in unrequited love with Hella, wherein Hadrian and Hella have been having sex, and Hella finds out that she's pregnant. this is the only fic to my memory where Hadrian is actually textually cheating on his wife, and he doesn't even have a speaking line in it!

give me more of that! make Hadrian worse!! that's my pitch!!!

One thing I've noticed: there are a lot of queer white folx who insist that the only virtuous ships are m/m (anything with woman is problematic because Reasons) and a lot of the time they end up slinging shit at qwoc who write m/f pairings about woc because how DARE non-white women want to explore relationships like their own, about women who look like them. 

This shit is all Bad and the second you bring non-white characters into the equation suddenly the gloves come off

Yep, there’s that and there’s the flip side of it and the only way to win is not to play.

(And it’s interesting, if tangential, how m/m is problematic when women write it while f/f and f/m are problematic no matter who’s writing them. Funny how that works.)

Samothes wears shirts under great duress and prefers, when wearing them, to wear them as badly as possible, they are always unbuttoned or sliding off his shoulders or tucked in but loose around his hips like a jumpsuit or some other nonsense, Samot is exasperated but also cannot bring himself to fix the issue

like, CANONICALLY, we were introduced to god and then immediately told about divine chest hair. so i also cannot in good faith but a shirt on god.

Hydrangea and lavender!

Hydrangea: what inspired you to begin writing in the first place? Wow, ‘in the first place’ is such a weirdly loaded question for me. As a kid, I just wrote because I loved stories and telling them and retelling them and figuring out what made them tick, the characters I loved and the tropes that provided me with emotional comfort and satisfaction.

And then I stopped.

(It wasn’t like… one big dramatic ‘I’m putting down the pen, I will never write again!’ but internalizing a lot of the messages that there wasn’t money in creativity, that a ‘real’ writer should be able to financially support themselves solely through their writing, and some adolescent angst and realization that I was full of tropey bullshit and pretension. I still wrote in journals, I did some play by post and tabletop stuff, but I stopped writing stories.)

Then in my last year or so of grad school, I was just. I was exhausted, I was burning out, I had failed a class and had to repeat that and all my friends had gone ahead of me with graduating and getting their lives in order. What little free time I had was usually at weird times when other people were unavailable, so I was playing a lot of video games and reading a lot of fanfic because I was having a hard time sitting down to parse longer stories or novels.

I started writing again because I wanted to see more stories featuring the kinds of characters I liked. I wanted to write in the missing emotional beats in a narrative. I wanted happy endings and happily ever afters and friendships and connections. I wanted laughter and sex and escapism and yes, I really, really wanted to write giant mutie porn because my tastes are Very Particular. :P

Lavender: what is the most important thing to you as a writer? Having fun. Related to the previous answer, if I’m not having fun, then there’s no point. I might as well do something else I enjoy.

Though most important thing for me in my own writing? Hitting those emotional beats, creating a resonance and warm feeling and being able to tell a story warmer, gentler, softer, add some hope and healing where I can. There’s a place for angst and sadfic and all sorts of wonderful playful campy tropes, but I know the things that bring me home.

People can be triggered by the word “gay” too. Gay is still being used as a homophobic pejorative the same way queer used to be:

This is a serious question that I want answered by somebody who doesn’t like “queer” as an umbrella term. Why is “queer” somehow unacceptable when it has been reclaimed as much as gay, lesbian, fag, or dyke? There is literally no descriptor of a person who experiences same-gender attraction that has not been weaponized as a slur. We don’t have words to describe ourselves if we don’t take them back from the kyriarchy. But this is the one people have decided to pick on.

Two prompts, because I say so: Danse meets Lily Bowen, and/or Danse staying at the Casa Madrid and completely failing to realize that it's a brothel.

“Jimmy, finish your veggies,” rumbles the elderly mutant— no, nightkin, Danse reminds himself— in the flowered dress.

Danse’s mouth twists. Bad enough to sit on this ridiculous stool, melamine plate carefully balanced on his knees, and struggle not to drop everything. But to finish these? Green beans boiled until yellow?

Danse has suffered through enough Brotherhood mess hall meals to recognize a hard limit.

“Children who don’t finish their veggies don’t get snack cakes,” Lily cajoles, the effect something like molasses over gravel. She raises a callused hand the size of a shovel, shaking a battered white box with a familiar logo.

Danse swallows. Sighs. Scrapes his fork across the plate. Mechanically opens his mouth to chew.

Danse purses his lips, pulling himself to attention. Heels together, shoulders back, gaze forward. He is fully aware of how ridiculous this will sound to anyone of reasonable mind, but he has gathered sufficient evidence to make the case.

Pretty Sarah cocks an eyebrow at him, waving her hand in a clear get on with it gesture.

“I believe the Casa Madrid is haunted,” he says crisply.

Pretty Sarah blinks. “What.”

Danse unfolds his notes, the meticulous bullet points of time and observation in narrow lines across the page. “I have observed supernatural phenomena for my last three nights here. Rusty creaking, strange wailing, walls rattling. On the first night, it commenced at twenty-three hundred…”

Pretty Sarah taps her foot through his recitation, but at one point crosses her arms as if struggling to hold herself together. Her gaze never leaves his.

“��therefore, in light of all these occurrences, there is only one conclusion: the Madrid is haunted.”

A long pause. Danse’s nose itches, but he struggles not to sneeze.

She swallows. Sighs.

Finally, Pretty Sarah says, “You do realize we’re a whorehouse, right?”

Placentalmammal 

A great source of Fallout Femslash! I love some of their older stuff, but they wrote a really cute Moira/Reilly fic for this year’s Femslash February (linked below). They also wrote a Christine short fic that I still fondly remember to this day, and a smutty Beatrix/Gloria Van Graff one that I also enjoy.

A must-have for cute pairings between canon female characters.
