Perse: Hey kiddo, I've got a favour to ask. There's this mortal princess who just got abandoned by her boyfriend on Naxos. Can you go cheer her up?
Dionysus: I mean, sure, but isn't that more of an Artemis thing?
Perse: Nah trust me, this is perfect for you.
*one wedding later*
Aphrodite, wearing the smuggest grin imaginable: Does anyone else know Olympus has two matchmakers?
Perse: You will say nothing about this to anyone.
Aphrodite: Oh very well, but if you're ever interested a career change, you know where to find me~

one of the reasons why i love ToA so much is the little bits and pieces of the gods we get to see.
so i guess this is really more of a 'this is why i love the gods so much' rather than my usual 'this is why i love ToA' post lmao
but fr, the gods are just sooooo much more fleshed out in ToA. they're more complex, and have these layers to them that pjo and hoo just Did Not convey (and really, only conveyed those things post publication of ToA, which came with the tools on how to decode the gods and read between the lines).
and i'm not even talking about Apollo here. he is by far the most fleshed out god we have because he's the pov character, but i also mean all 12 of the other olympians - they're just so juicy!!
like okay, sure, in pjo and hoo we get glimpses that Dionysus may care more than he lets on, but ToA CONFIRMS this, but not in an 'in your face' way - but in the 'Dionysus picks at Apollo like a little brother would' way, and in that FIRST interaction between Apollo and Dionysus, we can SEE what their relationship was like!!
Hermes is another VERY layered god, ESPECIALLY with pjo's context. but that context ONLY gains its own importance BECAUSE of the story ToA gives us - we would NOT have 'resigned to fate' Hermes without it. or embittered at his favorite brother Hermes. we love this Hermes eheheheheheheh
Artemis also gains more character, and is no longer just the stoic cool badass #Girlboss she's largely presented as - she's scared, she fears for Apollo, so much so she SPLITS. she comes RUNNING to help him in TTT as soon as she could, giving her a softer side, while simultaneously expands on her previous appearances and allowing us to see how she is unconsciously enabling the abuse Apollo's experienced. LAYERS !! !! !!
DEMETER. OOOHHH DEMETER ILY, IN MYTHOLOGY AND THE RRVERSE. BUT FOR COMPLETELY DIFFERENT REASONS LMAO
we can infer Demeter has basically shot herself in the foot by obsessing so much over Persephone, where she NEGLETS her other kids (ex: Lityerses, Meg). myth Demeter would NEVER but rrverse Demeter is still a fav BECAUSE of how flawed she is.
ARESSSSS do i even need to say anything. we KNOW Ares and Apollo are bros because of how often Apollo takes pot-shots at him in his dialogue LMAO true brother behavior
Hades is a chill uncle with Apollo in particular. i mean. *gestures* he used to purposefully mess up Apollo's aim when shooting for no reason. need i say more?
looking back i'm also a little intrigued by how little Poseidon was mentioned - perhaps lending credence to the idea that he and Apollo grew apart over the centuries?
also Hestia's position as the goddess of the hearth and home calls into question how passive she is on olympus BECAUSE of the shitshow it's become!! she defends it!! what has caused the hearth and home, the FIRSTBORN OF KRONOS, of the ENTIRE PANTHEON to be so stagnant in the face of this toxic cycle? the people want to know and so do i.
Hephaestus is trickier to pin down for me because he has little mention, but there's one SPECIFIC one that has stuck in my brain and its the "apollo missed an entire decade watching Hephaestus's newton's cradle INSIDE HIS OFFICE"
what was apollo doing in his office. and why did hephaestus - notorious introvert - let him stay in there. these are the questions we are all dying to know.
ATHENAAAAAAA !! !! !! !! !! that nod she gives apollo at the end. her bet on his SUCCESS. need i say more? she's bros with him trust <3 add in the mythology and it gets SPICY
Aphrodite is arguably a tricky one to pin down too, and honestly we as a fandom have probably taken more from the mythos to pin down her character than with the others, but she's sooooo interesting too!! the eldest olympian. powerful goddess. extremely cunning and ruthless. and yet she's seen as airheaded and vain by practically everyone.
makes you wonder who else is like that. *quick glance at our favorite god* i dunno who that could be. *whistles innocently*
and do i need to say anything about Zeus? about the tragedy of him falling into the cycle he was meant to break? ABOUT THE TRAGEDY OF HOW HE DEF WANTED TO BE A FATHER BUT HIS PARANOIA GOT THE BETTER OF HIM UNTIL HE NO LONGER WAS ONE??
*seizes you by the shoulders* HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO BE NORMAL ABOUT THIS. HOW.
and ofc. one of my FAVORITE gods...Hera. oh, ho ho Hera. you do NOT deserve the hate you get <3 okay maybe a bit of irritation is warranted because you do pull off risky things in hoo but we stan a goddess who takes charge in this house.
YOU CAN'T CONVINCE ME SHE'S GONNA BE - well, nicer? is that the right word? - BETTER WITH APOLLO POST-TOA. AFTER SEEING EVERYTHING HE SUFFERED? AFTER SEEING HIM SHED THE MASK? AFTER JASON GRACE?
*pounds mercilessly on the table* I WILL NEVER NOT BE ANNOYING ABOUT THEM I LOVE THEM ALL INCLUDING THE BITS OF CHARACTER FROM THE MINOR GODS WE GET TOO!!
#ramblings of an oracle#the trials of apollo#I WILL NEVER SHUT UP ABOUT THEM#this came on to me after i thought to myself “man why are you so obsessed with the gods more than the demigods?”#and to that i was like "well probably because there's deeper meaning behind their characters even between the lines.#the demigods' stories are pretty much wrapped up. but the gods? they're fresh. they have CHARACTER now. they're so dysfunctional.#but that makes them INTERESTING! it's a breath of fresh air to explore these more “adult” topics esp in a series typically aimed at kids!“#i love them your honor#trials of apollo#pjo apollo#toa apollo#pjo artemis#pjo hermes#pjo dionysus#pjo hephaestus#pjo ares#pjo aphrodite#pjo hera#pjo zeus#pjo hades#pjo demeter#pjo poseidon#pjo hestia#percy jackon and the olympians#the heroes of olympus#heroes of olympus

HEADCANNON
All of the Demigods in camp-half blood have some sort of useless power.
Zeus: Can (kinda) predict where lighting will strike
Poseidon: Always get the best waves when surfing
Hades: Don't feel sick looking at pictures of dead bodies
Demeter: Make a BANGING fruit salad
Apollo: His kids can -and will- stare at the sun (just to freak their dad out)
Hermes: Can always bond with middle children (even if not middle child themselves)
Athena: Never get papercuts
Ares: Can always get people angry enough to fight. (Only if it's a topic their passionate about)
Aphrodite: Never get frizzy hair.
Hephaestus: Always screw, screws the right way first time
Dionysius: Stage changes!?!?! They can literally do them in like a blink of am eye. It's scary.
Hestia: Can cook food perfectly on a raw fire
(Minor Gods)

So like, you know how in the Percy Jackson books, Athena creates her demigod children by thinking them into existence, mimicking how she herself was born from the skull of Zeus?
You think Aphrodite ever makes kids like how she was born? Chopping off some guy's nards, yeeting them into the sea, & pulling some progeny out of the sea foam?

There's something about the idea that gods change according to belief.
There's something about Aphrodite having to drop her sword and shield and pick up a makeup brush and mirror.
There's something about Zeus's Crown overtaking his hospitality.
There's something about Ares being scrubbed of his care with blood.
There's something about Hera's care being thrown in her face because of her cruelty.
There's something about Dionysus having his artistry and wildness ripped away from him due to his partying.
There's something about Hermes losing his chthonic connections in favour of his trickery.
There's something about Demeter surrendering her fierce, protective love and power over life and death to become a hysterical mother.
There's something about Athena's femininity and protectiveness fading to make her grip her spear and grasp her thoughts tighter.
There's something about Hephaestus forgetting his creations' finesse and intricacy to focus on pure function and efficiency.
There's something about Poseidon's earth-shaking rage that causes waves to rise above the tallest mountains being reduced to occasional vengefulness.
There's something about Apollo giving up his herds and truth and wisdom and plagues to speak the future and heal the wounded through song.
There's something about Artemis turning from children and childbirth to fixate on the wilderness.
There's something about the idea that gods change according to belief.

Demi-god son of Hera [name]: My baby is so amazing. He's the most beautiful man I've ever seen. I'm going to make him my husband, he's so wonderful! (Insert heart eyes)
Apollo: ...Are we looking at the same person here?
John Constantine, in a toga, loudly snoring with drool running down his face, VERY drunk from Dionysus' wine:
Diana (Aka Wonder Woman), whispering: I think he's been cursed by Aphrodite, brother.
Apollo, cringing as he watched [name] fawn over his lover: That seems very likely...
Aphrodite, appearing out of nowhere: I'll have you know, I didn't do anything. This is all him... He and his mother have horrible taste in men (insert scoff)

I've done minor character headcanons so prepare for my gods headcanons
Apollo naturally has golden eyes but he realized his father hated his eyes because they where the same shade as kronos. Because of this he tries to always have sky blue eyes in honor of his father. He also tries to pass it on to his kids in hope his father will be kinder to them......it has never worked but he doesn't plan to stop trying.
Hermes and Dionysus were very close during the prohibition era. Dionysus threw the parties and Hermes supplied the alcohol their fake mobster aliases are still well known in New York to this day.
While Hermes was the one to invent the internet many of the other gods were trying to race him to get out their versions first but you cant beat Hermes in a race. Athena is still salty to this day
In the old days Artemis would normally stay in a form that was the same age as her brother but when she realized that Zeus and her brother took her side more when she wore a youthful appearance it became her main form.
Zeus favors his daughter more because he doesn't think they can over thow him.
When it come to daughters Persephone is Zeus' least favorit because of all the chaos her marriage caused. its why he sits her next to his least favorite son (Apollo)
Aphrodite was very vocal in the civil right movement because she is love and beauty for all aspects and races.
These are it for now <3

Pjo AU, but the plot stays more or less the same, the only difference is that pjo!ares is replaced by myth!ares
So onto the differences:
Ares is a girls girl. He goes to feminist protests and pro-choice protests. Is the kind of person to beat up a guy who tried to drug a girl. Will pretend to be a girl's husband if sees her being harassed by a creepy dude, after the guy leaves calls an Uber for the girl.
He's a girl dad, despite having very few daughters over the last couple of centuries. Clarrise, and everyone in camp, know that she can ask him to become a goddess and he will make her one. Because she usually gets mistaken for a golden child some new campers think she's weak and is a counselor because she's Ares' favorite. They quickly find out that she can, and will, beat your ass if you try mocking her.
And don't think that just because Ares is a girl dad he doesn't love his sons. He's the kind of dad to have pictures of his kids in his wallet and tell about their achievements to anyone who'll listen.
He has a tradition of hosting a party for his children's birthdays(which he remembers) and he gets them gifts.
At some point after tlt he learns what Sally did to Gabe and immediately starts fangirling after her. They become friends. He's her maid of honor at her wedding with Paul.
Clarrise also has beef with Percy in this AU, but not why you think. Annabeth tells Luke she thinks Percy might be the son of Poseidon and this idea spreads among the counselors and gets back to Clarrise and she's mad, because she knows the story of Alcippe and Halirrhothius and automatically doesn't trust any children of Poseidon, so she has beef with him in the beginning, that goes down the same way, and that's why Ares has beef with Percy later on.
Because he's friends with Sally, at some point, after her and Paul start dating but before she tells him about the whole "my ex is a greek god" thing, she gets Ares and Aphrodite go on a double date with them, because in her eyes there are no better judges for her new boyfriend then the goddess of love and the god protector of women.

If we got to see in depth, the repercussions of any of the demigods in pjo i think it'd be interesting to see Will's.
Will, who heals people, absorbing their pain, their wounds eating away at him, literally.
He can calm people down but at the same time, takes in their anxiety, causing him to go into panic attacks at random and develop anxiety himself.
His vein's turning dark as he's overworked by healing, his body growing weaker and weaker until his skin turns an ashy gray.
His body, littered with scars from the moments in battle where he cannot heal them and must bear the reminder of them forever.
He can heal wounds but not scars, he's terrified when he finds out at 12 years old, when he's healed an Aphrodite kid and they get upset with him because there's a deep scar left over on their skin, he's terrified at the reminder that, although he is half god, at his core he is human.

Depending on what sources you use, Aphrodite could be considered the daughter of Zeus and Dione. If that's the parentage you're using, then consider this:
Aphrodite, after emerging on Olympus naked, is found by Perse Kronide and given clothes and food and shelter from the male gods leering at her.
That isn't necessarily limited to the Zeus and Dione origin story. Picture this: Aphrodite is born by the fall of Ouranos, but decides to hide from the titans, fearing what they might do to her if she meets them. In an AU where Perse Kronide is the Princess of Othrys, perhaps they even meet before the First Titanomachy begins? Aphrodite might even provide background help to the gods during the events.
She makes her first public appearance on Olympus, this time protected from a marriage contract. I don't see her being married to Hephaestus in this AU (which I why I didn't mention it in my Judgement of Paris post) since neither of them were enthused about the idea. Perhaps Perse introduces her to Ares instead? Contrary to certain modern interpretations, he is depicted in the myths as a defender of women and honourable if somewhat violent man, plus Aphrodite does seem to hold him in high regard.

Why make this blog? To give us ToA fans easier access to fics that are strictly based on The Trials of Apollo!
The ToA Ao3 tag isn’t as bad as it once was, but it’s still incredibly frustrating to shuffle through fics that have nothing to do with our favorite books, so this is what this blog is for!
Who made this blog? Hi, I’m @firealder2005, though you may also know me as @apollosgiftofprophecy or Alder!
How are you doing this? With lots and lots of painstaking time. I work on this in my spare time between college, family, extracurriculars, and other hobbies of mine.
What will I find here? Anything ToA!
What qualifies as ToA? A few things;
Takes place during ToA/is directly influenced by ToA (ie, deals with aftermath of ToA)
Apollo-focused/plays a main part
Focuses on ToA-centric characters (ie, Meg or Lavinia)
Expands on past characters (ie, Reyna, Jason) and their lives due to ToA
What about minor ToA characters? They count too! Chiara, Damien, Valentina, Paolo, ect are all included, and more!
What does “anything” mean? Anything. Meaning, there may be ships you don’t like, but still qualify as ToA, so make sure your filter is on so you can enjoy your scroll! Everything is tagged appropriately.
What about fics that aren’t ToA-friendly? I will be skipping those. In my own personal perusal of the tag, I have come across some fics that are rather unflattering to our series, so I will not be adding them here.
What fics are those? This includes fics that make Apollo homophobic (wtf), ignores the characters’ development, has tags that is negative towards ToA, or denies ToA’s existence entirely. I am using my own judgment on this matter, so if you feel I have made a mistake, shoot me an ask!
What about crossovers? I have crossovers tagged accordingly!
How did you tag? I’ll have a guide below the cut!
Any Questions? Send them in!
Did I miss a fic? Send an ask and advocate for its addition to the masses! (Will not be taking any at the moment, since I’m still putting it all together)
Just come here to hate? Will not be entertaining.

The reasoning for Hermes' absence in Luke's life is not adding up
So Hermes says he can't interfere in Luke's life due to the Ancient Laws (are these laws ever clarified somewhere??):
"Luke, I care very much," Hermes said slowly, "but gods must not interfere directly in mortal affairs. It is one of our Ancient Laws. Especially when your destiny . . ."
And we know Hermes loves Luke. Luke is described by Poseidon and Hermes himself as a favoured child. Plus Hermes is really distraught by everything going on with Luke:
His voice broke, and he shrank back to human size. "My son, my greatest pride . . . my poor May . . ." He sounded so devastated I didn't know what to say. One minute he was ready to vaporize us. Now he looked like he needed a hug.
We do see Hermes try to "help" his son by giving him that quest and asking Percy to talk to Luke. Not sure what Hermes was expecting from Percy speaking to his son. It would have made more sense for Hermes to ask Annabeth to do so. But anyway...too little too late either way.
I was reading Titan's Curse and there are multiple actions taken by the gods in that book that directly contradict what Hermes is saying or at the very least could have provided a loophole for Hermes to help Luke in some fashion earlier in life.
Let me go over one by one:
1) Gods can interfere if it relates to their domain (Artemis)
The monster wailed. "This is not fair! Direct interference! It is against the Ancient Laws." "Not so," another girl said. This one was a little younger than me, maybe twelve or thirteen. She had auburn hair gathered back in a ponytail and strange eyes, silvery yellow like the moon. Her face was so beautiful it made me catch my breath, but her expression was stern and dangerous. "The hunting of all wild beasts is within my sphere. And you, foul creature, are a wild beast." She looked at the older girl with the circlet. "Zoe, permission granted."
By this logic, Hermes should be able to interfere if Luke is actively participating in his domain. As a runaway kid, Luke comfortably would be under his jurisdiction as god of travellers or god of thieves/tricks. When Luke was on the Princess Andromeda, a mode of transport, Hermes should have been able to intervene here too. Even if Poseidon could not due to other sea deities.
2) Gods can interfere through prayer (Poseidon, Zeus)
"The blessing of the Wild," Grover said. "That should help with safe passage. Percy, pray to your dad, too. See if he will grant us safe passage through the seas."
"Thalia," I said. "Pray to your dad." She glared at me. "He never answers." "Just this once," I pleaded. "Ask for help. I think… I think the statues can give us some luck."
In Poseidon's case, Percy also needed to make a sacrifice. For Zeus' case, Thalia's life was in danger. Those are some important caveats.
Now Hermes does claim that he answers Luke's prayers:
Hermes readjusted the mailbag on his shoulder. “Percy, the hardest part about being a god is that you must often act indirectly, especially when it comes to your own children. If we were to intervene every time our children had a problem … well, that would only create more problems and more resentment. But I believe if you give it some thought, you will see that Poseidon has been paying attention to you. He has answered your prayers. I can only hope that some day, Luke may realize the same about me...”
Will talk about this at the end...
3) Gods can interfere if you straight up ask (Dionysus)
"You could ask for help," Mr. D murmured to me, as if this were an amusing thought. "You could say please."
Bro, Percy was straight-up disrespectful from start to finish. AND STILL! Mr. D helped after one pathetic, low-effort "please"! COME ON!!! What are we even doing here!?
4) Gods can interfere if they feel like it (Apollo, Ares/Aphrodite)
He put his finger to his lips. "I'm incognito. Call me Fred." "A god named Fred?" "Eh, well… Zeus insists on certain rules. Hands off, when there's a human quest. Even when something really major is wrong. But nobody messes with my baby sister. Nobody." "Can you help us, then?" "Shhh. I already have. Haven't you been looking outside?"
She made a tsk-tsk sound. "Percy, I'm on your side. I'm the reason you're here, after all." I stared at her. "What?" "The poisoned T-shirt the Stoll brothers gave Phoebe," she said. "Did you think that was an accident? Sending Blackjack to find you? Helping you sneak out of the camp?" "You did that?" "Of course! Because really, how boring these Hunters are! A quest for some monster, blah blah blah. Saving Artemis. Let her stay lost, I say. But a quest for true love—"
At least Apollo's motivation was out of love for his twin. Aphrodite's motivation was so shallow it's embarrassing. No wonder her cabin is such a disgrace.
I'm only looking at book 3 but Hera is a notable mention from book 4 and the sequel series as well.
Now let me mull over Hermes answering Luke's prayers -
With how bitter Luke has been towards Hermes, I doubt he was still praying to his father after his failed quest when Kronos began whispering to him. And that's being generous. I bet Luke stopped praying to his dad after he met him the first time.
But we know Luke prayed and asked Hermes for help as a kid:
"Why show yourself now?" Luke demanded. His shoulders were tense, as if he expected a fight. "All these years I've been calling to you, praying you'd show up, and nothing. You left me with her."
My problem here is that we see absolutely no evidence of Hermes ever helping Luke. I bet Hermes was probably guiding Luke subtly while he was on the run but that's up to speculation because I never saw any hints from the Diary of Luke Castellan. There were at least two moments where it could have been clear that Hermes was helping Luke:
How had I known to search for it? Perhaps my dad, Hermes, the jack-of-al-trades god, was guiding me, since he’s got a way with potions and alchemy. Perhaps I’d seen the recipe somewhere before, and searching the apartment had triggered that memory.
I tried to focus on my work. I didn’t realy know what I was doing, but I had no choice. Maybe Hermes was watching out for me, lending me some of his alchemy know-how. Or maybe I just got lucky.
I just wish the signs were a lot clearer in these scenes. We don't know if Luke truly got lucky - we don't attribute Percy's wild ideas and feats to Poseidon, do we? - or Hermes was nudging him. Could be both for all we know but Hermes never brings this moment up.
What prayers exactly had Hermes been answering? We'll never know!
I just think Luke got the short end of the stick. Sometimes I don't know whether Hermes' actions - or lack of - should be attributed to tragedy or Rick's bad writing. How can Hermes see the other gods interfering every other second and truly believe he can't do the same?
Luke baby, you deserved so much better.
