2020 Fic Highlights

Thank you for tagging me, @alystraea!  Your beautiful artwork always brightens my day. Rules: It’s time to love yourselves! Choose your favourite works you created in the past year (fics, art, edits, etc.) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you brought into the world in 2020. This has been a year of short-ish stories for me.  In picking my favourites, I realised that all of them, in some way, deal with life, death, and renewal or acceptance - perhaps appropriate, after what we’ve all been through over the last 10-12 months.

So without further ado, here’s my “best of” for 2020... Undómiel.   Of the banner that Arwen wove for Aragorn, and of the power, history, and craft behind it.

Come Away, O Human Child and its companion piece, With a Faery, Hand in Hand.  A pair of fics about the orphaned twins left behind at the end of Tolkien’s The Lay of Aotrou and Itroun.  Dark-ish fairy tale elements and post-canon extrapolation.

This is, Mingjue thinks, still his favorite person to spar with. The only one he doesn’t have to hold back with. The only one who challenges him. 

Even though lately, Mingjue reflects, watching Xichen pull off layers of delicate Lan robes as he strips to the waist, he has begun to cheat. Mingjue sighs and pulls off his own shirt and drapes it over a sword stand. No use losing any more clothes to sword cuts.

“Jian or dao?” Xichen calls from the other side of the courtyard.

Mingjue answers, “Dao.” He may as well make it harder for Xichen.

Xichen laughs and pulls a training saber from the stand, tossing it to Mingjue, before he picks another for himself. “Worried you won’t win with a jian, Chifeng-Zun?”

Mingjue only grunts, refusing to dignify that with an answer.

And then Xichen is there, blade flashing high, not even waiting to observe the formalities of a sparring duel. Mingjue blocks, the clash of the swords reverberating, filling him with the familiar blend of pride and apprehension at how goddamn strong Xichen is, even with a weapon that is not his own. 

Now that the initial surprise of the first attack has passed, he sinks into the fight, letting his body react to every hard and swift blow. But he is waiting. He knows it’s coming.

It takes longer than he expects. At the end of a block against the flat bei of the saber, Xichen swings his dao through a low arc that allows him to shove Mingjue’s blade into the air with only one hand on the grip. He shifts to the side under Mingjue’s arm trailing the fingers of his other hand across Mingjue’s stomach. 

“You forgot to braid my hair today, Chifeng-Zun,” he murmurs as he reaches Mingjue’s back and kisses the space between Mingjue’s shoulder blades.

Mingjue growls and shoves aside the distracting curl of desire that snakes through him. He spins to chop his saber down in a sideways crescent, following with a quick upward intercept, forcing Xichen to dance backward. 

But Xichen isn’t off balance for long, using his speed to hack and slice forward, and it is all Mingjue can do to sweep the attacks to the side. He sees Xichen’s feet shift and knows he is going to change tactics. He grins. Xichen is not the only one who can cheat. 

Mingjue lets the momentum of Xichen’s next block swing his saber away from guard, knowing Xichen will convert the move into a two-handed stab. At the last second, Mingjue side steps, grabbing Xichen’s hands on the bing and yanking him forward into Mingjue’s chest. Surprised, Xichen looks up, and Mingjue shows no mercy, kissing him hard, biting into his lip and relishing the hot salt taste of blood and exertion. Xichen laughs into his mouth and surrenders the fight immediately, dropping his blade and pressing his sweat-slick body against Mingjue.

“You win, Chifeng-Zun,” he says, as he wraps his arms around Mingjue’s neck, returning the kiss with such ferocity they topple to the ground in a tangle of limbs and love.

And in fact, Mingjue agrees.

Summary: Finrod is fascinated by the way Edrahil's eyes shine green only in certain, sudden light. He observes this strange and interesting fact in many unusual circumstances, but it is hardly the most unexpected thing his lover brings into his life. That would have to be the stories, or Edrahil's unwavering loyalty to Finrod himself, or perhaps the ways in which, because of him, Finrod will consider things he never thought possible before. Happy pride month! (Vichris OS)

I got inspired by this amazing fanart by @piyo13sdoodles!

It’s basically just 600+ words of fluff

“What the fuck are you doing this lei with, Chris?” Victor suddenly said, breaking the sweet silence that accompanied them while they worked.

“Don't tell me you don't know what this is.”

“I know exactly what this is.”

“So don't act so surprised?”

“I'm not surprised, I'm just mad I didn't think of it before finishing my own.”

Victor showed his lei to go along with his words. His was so clean, the flowers quite small and the colors followed the rainbow. Chris went with bigger flowers, as for the colors he did the same, except he added some condoms here and there. This may made the lei less beautiful, but way more fun to wear.

“It's okay, yours is extra pretty like that, it goes with your face.”

“Are you using compliments so I don't steal your lei?”

“Obviously.”

“It's working.”

It always worked. Chris finished his lei as Victor took the paint. They already got a huge rainbow flag, and two little bi and pan ones. But wearing their pride colors on the cheek was something else. Also Chris didn't have any ace flag – it's not that easy to find, so let's not even talk about finding a demi one.

“Is it gouache?” asked Chris glancing at the paint.

“Yep.”

“It's gonna hurt once it's dry.”

“Yep, but you'll never get a decent white with a felt pen. It's worth it.”

Victor had a point. Last year, they went with felt pen but the colors weren't bright enough and it quickly went away. At least with that, it'll stay. Chris offered his cheek to Victor who just lent and kissed it.

“Thanks, laughed Chris, but that's not why I was holding it out to you.”

“I'm using kisses in case I fail your flag. Is it working?”

“Hm yes, you'll be forgiven.”

And Victor started painting. The brush was smooth against the skin, one stripe after the other. It was so calming he could have done that for hours – and Chris wouldn't be the one stopping him.

“One more to go, he said once he was done.”

“Don't mess up the triangle, or you'll need more than kisses to be forgiven.”

“Shut up, I want to fail it on purpose now.”

But he didn't. Carefully, he drew the three stripes, then the triangle and it was done.

“That's the best I've ever done.”

Chris took his phone to see how it looked and nodded in agreement.

“Perfect. Which flag do you want?”

“Rainbow one, but shaped as a heart!”

“Here you go, russian boy.”

Sticking his tongue out of his month, Chris focused on his task. They both became actually good at that, pride after pride, but they kept playing as if it was the first time – maybe because it always felt like the first time. The atmosphere was mostly the same, but each time they went out, showing their colors as much as they could, being as loud as their voice allowed them, being as proud as ever, it felt like a rebirth, like if they were themselves after months of wearing a mask. They didn't even care if someone recognized them – worst, if journalist saw them – which would force them to officially come out. They never really hid it, but it was no one's business in the skating world.

“Done!” finally said Chris, handing Victor his phone for him to look at his art.

“Let's take a selfie!” That wasn't even a question. Chris got closer, always down for pictures anyway, as Victor opened his frontal camera. “Say: ‘Happy pride month!’”

“I don't think you get the point of saying something while taking a picture.”

“You just have to say it with a smile, it'll do. 3..2..1..”

They shout at the same time: “Happy pride month!”
