Spiced Right #2
Who knew that barbecue and a bunkhouse cook showdown could be so HOT and the food produced in a pit so delicious sounding! Oh…and the romance was spiced just right, too!
What I liked:
* Returning to The Triple R – Reed River Ranch and spending time with this wonderful supportive group of people
* Avery Reed: award winning pitmaster, bunkhouse cook ranch cowboys, integral member of the ranch, abandoned by his mother, abusive father, loves his family, rather taken with Layla
* Layla Jenson: YouTube cook-off host, influencer, grew up on a farm, had and has big dreams, survived abuse to reinvent herself, good friend, loves the ranch and is rather taken with Avery
* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing
* The delicious sounding food created by Avery and wanting to taste it all
* The sidebar regarding Avery’s father and wondering if he will show up in a future book
* Trying to figure out how two people with such different goal will manage to find a happy ending together
* Wondering which of the potential single people mentioned might have their story told next: Ritchie, Chance, Luke, Riley, will Todd and Brodie end up together, and perhaps there are others
* That Karma managed to deal with Layla’s abuser in just the right way
* The scene with Layla and her father toward the end – would have liked more about them
* All of it really except…
What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* The abuse experienced by more than one character and wishing it had not happened
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series/by this author? Yes

O que define um pitmaster? Uma das principais dúvidas de quem está começando é saber quando ele pode se considerar um pitmaster! É só ter um Pit, uma garra de urso, uma faca bacana e um avental? Eu acredito que não, o que nos torna um pitmaster é a experiência, o pitmaster é aquele que domina o Pit, entende o que o smoker está mostrando, masteriza o seu equipamento e a técnica. Não é o equipamento, a faca ou o avental que faz o pitmaster, e sim o domínio que ele tem sobre o fogo, a carne, as temperaturas e as texturas. O pitmaster é como um piloto de avião, que quanto mais horas de voo ele tem, melhor ele fica! No caso do pitmaster quanto mais horas de fumaça ele tem, e quanto maior for a pilha de cinzas que ele já gerou durante a sua vida, mais completo ele se torna. Algumas coisas são muito interessantes quando você entende isso, hoje só pelo cheiro eu sei que meu Pit está frio ou quente demais, só olhando para o fogo eu sei se já está na hora de colocar mais carvão ou mais lenha, e isso só se ganha com a prática, com horas ali do lado do pit, observando cada detalhe, atento ao que o fogo, a carne e o equipamento estão falando pra você! Eu não sou quem vai dizer se você é ou não um pitmaster, isso você vai saber ao natural, vai sentir no seu coração. Você já se sente um pitmaster? I watch a fair number of cooking completions, including Barbecue Showdown on Netflix. They released season 3 recently and I was impressed with cheftestant Slone Rinaldi, a fourth-generation pitmaster from Texas.
Rinaldi made no secret of her personal life, she proudly spoke about her “wife” Connie. For a show that leans into good-old-boy territory is was terrific to see the LGBTQ+ community represented.

A true entrepreneur, after a 30+ year career in commercial landscaping, Rinaldi was inspired to return to her family roots and become a pitmaster. She started entering BBQ competitions and placed 17th out of 250 entrants in her second try. Fuel by her successes she then developed her own Texas barbecue sauce (based on family recipes) then convinced the H-E-B grocery chain to sell it at all of their 270+ locations.
Her successes led her to be selected in 2018 to represent Texas on Food Network’s Chopped Grillmasters Tournament.
Rinaldi is advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, something she proudly showcases on social media. She celebrates and raises awareness about lesbian identities.
