Our Flag Means Death & “The Hamilton effect”
Or: why you should not take media (of any kind) at face value.
Note: I wrote this well before OMFD got big, and some years before I rejoined the history fandom, I've always been a historical fiction writer to a degree. I am also not strictly anti-Hamilton and I'm definitely not anti-OMFD, this is just elaborating on why you should do your research and why historical fiction is complicated, and should never be marketed as historical fact.

Introduction to this blog
Tumblr media
Hi! I'm Ash Shepard, I'm a genderfluid British autistic person, I'm 27 and I love to write short stories, novels, fanfiction and everything in-between.
I love to diamond paint/ do diamond art and other arts and crafts stuff.
You may also call me Hal or just Ash if you want to, I appreciate that. Most of my works are about Angels, Demons, Gods and Reapers though I am branching out to other things.
I have a Ko-Fi if you would like to support me
Here's my WordPress blog where you can read free short stories
I write for adults mostly, though some of my writing is also pretty tame. Just expect a lot of swearing and violence, amongst other things.
I love to watch things like NCIS, Gravity Falls, Supernatural, Pirates of the Caribbean and a host of other things.
I do not have a job because I'm disabled, an insomniac and chronically ill, so I consider my writing my job. I am here pretty much 24/7 unless I'm sleeping.
Inbox is always open for asks about my wips, life, my arts and crafts and so on and on. Come say hi!

do you have any basic pointers for writers who might want to try out doing a serialised story online but have no idea where to start?
I'm hesitant to give too much general advice because every situation is specific - what you should do depends on what you're writing, your goals with your book, and where you're at with regards to community, connections, and followers. There isn't a lot of one-size-fits-all advice I can give that isn't me making up scenarios and speculating about them. That being said I can point you towards a couple platforms.
I serialize my novels via a newsletter hosted on Substack, though I have VERY mixed feelings about Substack as a platform. I am a fan of newsletters in general though. They have some significant benefits - for instance you can download and keep your subscriber list, so you don't have the problem of being trapped on any individual platform. They're free below certain subscriber thresholds, however most services do cost money once you get a large enough audience, they can be a bit involved to set up, and you have to do the heavy lifting of getting people to subscribe. Off the top of my head, newsletter hosts include: Beehiiv, Buttondown, Ghost, Substack, Mailchimp, GoDaddy, and ConvertKit, but there’s loads more out there.
I am aware of Wattpad, Ream, RoyalRoad, and Radish as serial platforms but have not explored them and cannot speak to how they work. Some of those cater to specific kinds of books. Wattpad is the biggest and most general one.
If you consider your book broadly "fannish" you can serialize it on AO3 (it's a grey area, I would read that page before deciding.)
You can also always host it on your own website and link to there from whatever social media you use. I'm less familiar with web hosts though. (Neocities is popular but you'd have to want to play with HTML. If you don't want to do that, maybe Wordpress?)
I hear a lot of people talking about feeling abandoned and ignored when making the jump from fanfiction to original writing. So, breaking my own rule immediately, (you can see I'm making an assumption here based on this being Tumblr) one piece of advice I'll give is that if you're starting from scratch BUT you're in a fandom, writing something original that still appeals to other fans is a good way of bridging the gap between fanfiction and original writing - e.g. if you're into OFMD and you write an original novel about gay pirates, you're a Good Omens fan and you write a novel about angels and demons, etc.
Oops that ended up super long. Followers let me know if there are any platforms I missed!

Peregrine Seas by R.C. Ballad (July 1st) Prince Peregrine couldn’t be happier to be kidnapped by pirates. Plu's 2024 Writeblr Intro
Hi!
I'm Aurora but I go by many nicknames. Plu is a popular one. I'm a writer in my 30s who's been writing since I could put pen to paper. I've been on writeblr for a long time so I make new intros now and then.
What do I write? Fantasy! My goal isn't to be published but simply to write because it brings me joy. I've been working on my series since I was ~12, but I've also got stand-alones in the making.
My cast is primarily ace and aro, so if you want romance I am not your gal. Unless you want (gay) soulmates doomed to tragedy because I do got that wip.
Besides tragic soulmates I've got mermaid pirates searching for a sanctuary away from humans that have been hunting them for ages, a futuristic wip where the humans are gone so the dragons are returning or supposed to but only one does, and a dad who gets kidnapped by aliens.
My series is about alternate worlds/earths and the barriers between these worlds cracking, with monsters slipping through the cracks. Infected worlds are eaten by a colossal fog named Nothing. Three factions have risen to fight this.
We have Siruna, the mighty army faction. U.N.I.T are agents hiding in the shadows. The Rebels rose to protect the innocent with no one to protect them in this war.
And, now, we have space elves. They are not from any alternate worlds or on the side of any human.
დ WIP Intros დ
Fantasy Series:
Toy Soldier
»[...] First novel in my fantasy series centred around the consequences of the veils between worlds breaking. Not only are monsters seeping through the cracks but a massive fog rolls in on worlds overtaken by monsters and devours them.«
Förtrollade Omständigheter/Witches be Witchin’
»[...] Second novel in my series. In this adventure, inspired by the joy of playing D&D for the first time, we meet new characters and follow their journey.«
What Binds Us
»[...] Third instalment of my fantasy series. In this one, we follow an agent from what has been assumed as the “good guys”, and find out that maybe they’re not so good after all.«
Stand Alones:
Mermaid Pirates
»[...]The Lost Lenore is another character’s deceased love interest. This kind of tragedy is one of The Oldest Ones in the Book and named for the famous deceased in Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven”«
Dragons Are Back
»[...] Determined to find out why they are the only to return, they set out to wander this earth for answer. A bird named Pip joins them on this adventure across the globe.«
(Gay) Tragic Soulmates
»[...] A story where soulmates are born again and again, searching for each other, only to be pulled apart by greater forces pulling the strings.«
You can find my fanfic on Ao3. My current obsession is Steddie. Other than that I'm also on Bluesky, myWriteClub, Instagram, and Wordpress where you can read snippets and lore from my fantasy series.
I created the writeblr trick-or-treat event that runs in October. The post for 2024 is up so check it out if you wanna join in on the fun!
Thanks for reading!

Writeblr Introduction
Tumblr media
Hello! It's time to properly introduce myself to the writeblr community. You can call me KC if you want. I am a full time specialist as my local library system and I have a Master of Letters in Fantasy Literature from the University of Glasgow. For now, this is my writing website, until an agent/editor tells me to build a WordPress or something. (I honestly hate traditional blogs. Weird quirk, don't know why. Also, links are underlined). If I get tagged in things, I will do my best to respond to them and share it forward.
Published Works- This includes my self-published 5e adventure and the two anthologies that include my stories. It will be updated and kept current as this develops.
Works in Progress- The main projects that I've been bouncing back and forth between. Most are world-oriented, meaning they have numerous interconnected stories within a single world.
Where to Find Me: Some of my other internet homes, including World Anvil, Pinterest, Twitter, and Facebook.
More Details Below...
Here are some more details on the different things I linked above:
Published Works
"Sofia Serrento's Flying Circus and the Sky Pirates of Shanghai" is published in the anthology Hell Hath No Fury: New Pulp Heroines. It's a New Pulp story set in 1930s Shanghai, featuring Sofia Serrento and her all-women aero-circus/spy ring.
"The God-Kings' Tomb" is published in the anthology Futures That Never Were, an anthology of original sword & planet short stories. This one is in the same universe as Sofia Serrento, so the two stories are... technically connected. This one involves an SOE advisor specializing in the occult and arcane who finds herself transported to a different planet in the solar system.
Siege at Oasis Butte is a standalone 5e adventure published through the DM's Guild featuring a desert town under siege by mercenaries with mysterious motivations.
Works In Progress
Iron Horizons/The Pilgrim's War: This was a NaNoWriMo novel from a few years ago that has since... grown. I've been calling it a Dieselpunk space opera, but alternate history/retrofuturism is also apt. Basically, humanity rapidly developed space flight in the 1920s based on some MacGuffin physics nonsense leading to the second world war happening on a solar system level using extensions of 30s aesthetics. Pilgrim's War is set roughly 400 years after that war ended, with the extensive resources from space maintaining the colonialist expansion into the stars and focuses primarily on a sort of... War of 1812 situation between a well-established independent government and their recently independent colonies.
The Centurion Club: My published short stories are set in this universe. Ironically, this is also an alternate history. It's the primary setting for my "New Pulp" fiction. It's mostly short fiction, with some longer projects in the brainstorming phase, and it focuses on the fictionalized city of Weymouth in New England and the members of the illustrious Centurion Club, a scientific society for explorers, scientists, freedom fighters, reformers, and others who push the boundaries of human society. Beyond that, a sword and sorcery setting in Mesolithic Doggerland, some privateers/mercenaries in the 17th/18th centuries, and a contemporary CGIS special agent in a Clive Cussler vein, plus a great many vigilantes and adventurers in the 1930s.
Sigil of the Sea King: A heroic fantasy which, also a NaNoWriMo project, is self-indulgence, where I throw together everything I've really enjoyed but could never fit in elsewhere. So there's an island kingdom ruled by merchant sea princes, flying air whales, nomads whose wagons are pulled by sails, cozy Forest Folk, a lone surviving heir to a crumbled kingdom, and lots of influence from Georgian/Armenian/Caucasian culture, mythology, and history.
Flintlock Fantasy: This is just the earliest stages of development, mostly just simmering, but somewhat Napoleonic secondary fantasy world. The main character is an elf named Lark, and I think she's sort of a janissary-type sent to work covertly in a border region between two empires. Random, Personal Information
You may have once known me as NovelistSpaceRanger, but that was like 8 years ago.
I'm a certified open-water diver and I'm working on my advanced open-water diver later this summer.
Also a whitewater rafter, backpacker, mediocre yogi, and rock climber.
I've been to 14 countries and spent a year and a half living in Europe.

Ron Watches Hannibal Season 1 Episode 1
First things first — I’ve already watched the first season of this show, years ago while it was airing. And that was literally a decade ago. My god. I wasn’t able to watch the succeeding seasons because life and I think the channel airing it eventually stopped and the pirate site I knew stopped uploading. But since I’ve just read Red Dragon I thought it would be nice to revisit this…
