TBR TAKEDOWN: GOODREADS, WEEK 16.b
A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe (The Salvagers #1) by Alex White

I'm trying to trim down my tbr list(s) and I'm asking for your help! Descriptions and more info under the cut. Please reblog and add your thoughts!
* * * *
Furious and fun, the first book in this bold, new science fiction adventure series follows a ragtag group of adventurers as they try to find a legendary ship that just might be the key to clearing their name and saving the universe.
Boots Elsworth was a famous treasure hunter in another life, but now she's washed up. She makes her meager living faking salvage legends and selling them to the highest bidder, but this time she got something real--the story of the Harrow, a famous warship, capable of untold destruction.
Nilah Brio is the top driver in the Pan Galactic Racing Federation and the darling of the racing world--until she witnesses the murder of a fellow racer. Framed for the murder and on the hunt to clear her name, Nilah has only one lead: the killer also hunts Boots.
On the wrong side of the law, the two women board a smuggler's ship that will take them on a quest for fame, for riches, and for justice.
Date added: 2018
Goodreads: 3.78
Storygraph: 3.77
PRO:
I do enjoy a space adventure - sometimes
The first two books in the series are available from the library in my preferred format (audiobook)
CON:
The third book in the series is not available from the library in my preferred format (audiobook)
This has been on my tbr longer, but I read the author's newer book, August Kitko and the Mechas from Space, and DNF'd it half way. Not getting vibes from this one that the writing style will be different.

Read this month: August 2024

So many enjoyable books:
Honami Shirono - I want to be a Wall Vol. 03
Emma Jacobsen - Die Glücksbäckerei am Meer (eARC)
Marie Kondo - The Life-Changing Manga of Tidying Up
T. Kingfisher - Jackalope Wives and other Stories
Alex White - Star Trek DS9: Revenant (German eARC)
Heather Fawcett - A Galaxy of Whales
Rainbow Rowell - Slow Dance
I finally felt like reading physical books again - though I did not make a huge dent in my "books to read in 2024" as I mostly read all the great new books I got this month. My average time to finish a book skyrocketed, because I actually started Jackalope Wives on January 1st and only finished it in August (I am not looking forward to the month I finally finish The Fellowship of the Rings - I started that one in Febuary and am only about halfway through).

still thinking about Alex and Elliot. What's up Cold Skin lovers.
some things I had planned for CS3 pt2 involved.. Confusion, I guess, on Alex's part? Some time after being discharged from the hospital, she ends up confessing that she loves them. Granted she's not completely sure what kind of love it is, and she knows they're not romantically compatible (alex being ace and elliot being aro) so it's causing her a lot of stress.
So Elliot (with permission) kisses her. Their logic is that the kiss will help her figure out her feelings.
The kiss was weird. They both agreed that it did not feel correct at all, so Alex realizes that she loves Elliot platonically, not romantically. They laugh about it after. They love each other to death, they would do anything for each other, I'm sure someone could have shipped them but. Nope. They're strictly platonic babey!
It's also their first kiss. btw. for both of them. they took each other's first kiss.

Alright as we draw near the end of the transrightsreadathon I thought I would post some recomendations of books by authors who are trans. I'm a huge fan of sff series so here are the first books in 4 series that really worked for me. They are exciting, romantic, brutal and thoughtful by turns. Each one has a wonderful sense of the world they exist in and the characters that inhabit those worlds and they play with tropes and themes in ways that I found interesting. Many of these have trans characters as well, but not all of them. Most of these authors have other books outside of these series that are also wonderful (you might see some of them in the other reclists that I am going to post). And these are just a handful of examples, there are so many fabulous books by and about people who are trans.
What are some of your favorite series by trans authors? Are there any I should give a try?
Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee
She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan
Witchmark by C.L. Polk
A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe by Alex White

I started reading Revenant by Alex White while on a trip last weekend. I'm about half of the way through and enjoying it. It's an interesting sci-fi thriller that focuses on Jadzia Dax and the past hosts of the Dax symbiont and explores Trill culture. I've always found the concept of the Trill fascinating, so it's great to delve more into this topic.
I think this is Alex White's first Star Trek novel, I hope they write more in future.

truly nothing more depressing than when you finish a good book and happily trot over to the tags only to find them absolutely desolate. “So excited to read fanfic!”, you think. “I sure am ready to look at some art and memes too.” all the while unbeknownst to you, there are approximately 3 posts concerning said fandom. the most recent was posted in 2019. total cricket noises greet your search query.
