My Favorite Reads of 2019

I read a lot of new books this year. Some old, some new, but I wanted to compile a list of the best of the best! I may add one or two if I read something else amazing this month but I don’t expect to. So, in no particular order, here’s my favorite reads of 2019: The Chemical Garden Trilogy - Wither - Fever - Sever - by Lauren DeStefano

Takes place in a future dystopian setting in which the new generation only lives for 20-25 years. This was the series that really got me back into reading again. I would stay up wayyyyy to late because I wanted to read more. Also all 3 books were interesting not just the first or last. 10/10

Six of Crows - Crooked Kingdom - by Leigh Bardugo

Honestly, I only picked this up because I saw a meme about this being the best YA novel ever. I was like "I’ll be the judge of that >_>”. And then it turns out it WAS an incredible novel. I would say ranked #2 in my all time favorites. LOVED the gang of characters and the overall story was refreshing after reading too many garbage ya novels. 10/10

Absolutely TERRIFIED of the tv show btw, I don’t think I can watch it tbh.

Sky in the Deep - Adrienne Young

This was the perfect nothing story. You know, books where you don’t have to really think to hard, or get too involved, but are still interesting? I find them hard to find, but THIS one was exactly that. It was the perfect break from intense plots and characters without having to hurt the story itself. 10/10

Note: The companion/sister novel to this, “The Girl the Sea Gave Back” was GARBAGE and not worth reading. Thank.

A Court of Thorns and Roses - A Court of Mist and Fury - A Court of Wings and Ruin -  Sarah J Maas (Also A Court of Frost and Starlight)

Um.... Well. This was unexpectedly one of my favorite stories I ever read. I think it shares #2 of all time with Six of Crows (I HAVE REASONS they are BOTH #2 ok. I’M alLoWeD iTs mY liST). I went into it expecting a “nothing story”. Y’know some girl gets abducted by a scary beast/hot guy and taken to the land of faeries and stuff happens. I IMMENSELY enjoyed the first book as a “nothing story” where not a whole lot happened but it was super fun. Then all of a sudden plot happened??? And then the second book RUINED ME. I HAVE NEVER been so obsessed with a story and its characters. The way it changes the whole narrative but was CLEARLY planned from the start is so *clenches fist* amazing. 10/10 I am still UTTERLY obsessed with this world so *ahem*

The Cruel Prince - The Wicked King - The Queen of Nothing - by Holly Black

Honestly I wasn’t interested in this series for a long time. Then I saw the cover for Queen of Nothing back in the middle of this year, and was like “THAT’S COOL THOUGH” and decided to give it a try. I wasn’t really sure how much I liked the first one, but I LOVED The Wicked King. Jude is one of my all time favorite protagonists. She’s smart and cunning but also flawed and interesting. I am not finished QoN yet (I only just started) but I can ALREADY TELL this series is in my top favorites. I also enjoy the hate/love relationship between Jude and Cardan. It’s different from the majority of YA novels. 10/10

Everless - Evermore - by Sara Holland

A girl who can manipulate time? Sign me up boiiiii! I’m all about the time travel/time control. I was disappointed in the second book, but the first one was really enjoyable. I can’t really go into why without major spoilers, so lets just say the plot twists were actually unexpected and the characters more interesting than most. 10/10

Honorable mentions:

Shadow and Bone - Leigh Bardugo If only the second and third book lived up to the first. Baby boy Nikolai was the best part of this entire series.

Daughter of the Pirate King - Tricia Levenseller Pirates and mermaids? Please.

Seafire - Natalie C. Parker The only reason this isn’t on the list is because I haven’t read the second one yet and the third one isn’t out for another year so its very incomplete atm. But I really liked the “steam punkish” take on an entirely female crew of pirates .

So anyway. That’s my list of my favorite reads of 2019. I am so far at 38 books out of my goal of 50 books for the year. I don’t think I will be reading 10+ books this month so I don’t think I will reach 50. But I still think I read a lot and am pleased with finishing as many as I did.

The Royal Heir, Ch. 3, AKA Where’s the Heir?

What happened this week:

Before getting off the train, Bertrand offers MC a silk curtain to wear in lieu of her usual polyester fabric of curtain. For now, let’s stick with the polyester.

The paparazzi are so eager to find out id MC and her LI did the dirty enough to drop a ball into the hoop, if you know what I mean, that they pretty much ooze stuff out of every orifice for the information

Everyone interacts with the crowd is some extremely on-brand way, and the press go wild for Drake being really, really not cut out for this. Maxwell signs a child fan’s book and actively avoids signing on his face, but I have the feeling that when MC also signed it she actively attempts to sign on his face.

OUR CORGIIIIIIIIII!!!!! WE GET TO SEE OUR BABY BOIIIII!!!

The group as children is absolutely adorable. We need a whole other book of just the child!Royals because the boys and Olivia as pirates getting up to no good and Hana being sad would make a more entertaining book than Sunkissed and the last couple chapters of every other book but Platinum combined. Also, Constantine gains points and climbs the ranks on my Daddy Dickhead scale. Maybe I should do a post about that...

OLIVIA! And Penelope! And Kiara! And Madeleine! All civil under one roof!!! I love it!!!

At the council meeting, MC suggests another royal ball, which given her past experiences with balls (haha), is not a good idea.

Thoughts:

I actually really like the whole politicalness of the series. I would go into it, but it’s 1AM and it’s been a long day, so interpret this yourself. Just know that I kinda dig it. The only thing that kinda bothers me is how Drake is so passionate about his position on the council, giving that he didn’t want anything to do with politics in the original series. It’s cool that he voices on behalf of the commoners, though.

Get ready for me to have the drabest nursery ever. The Queen of the country raising her kid in a rotting bedroom. I won’t be surprised if they end up running away from the estate, because for the royal heir, anywhere else would be better than that room.

Nanami Momozono from Kamisama Kiss. I gotta stop talking about this anime but it’s my FAV LET ME BE! I just really connect with her and I always have. She’s the kind of person I strive to be: caring, strong, stubborn in the best ways, and always trying her best even when things look hopeless. I have a lot of feelings about Nanami.

2. Book you can read over and over without getting tired of?

The Song of the Lioness quartet by Tamora Pierce (more specifically the second book, In The Hand of the Goddess), To Catch a Pirate by Jade Parker, and Just Ella by Margaret Peterson Haddix. I’ve always been more a fan of the fantasy 9-12 section than young adult or other fantasy. I guess I just like easy and shorter reads because I don’t have a super long attention span when it comes to books.

3. What’s your favourite comfort movie/show?

Fantastic Mr. Fox is the first one that comes to mind.

4. Which fictional character are you most defensive over?

Nagi Mikado from Uta no Prince Sama!! He’s an antagonist and the biggest little shit and I love him to bits. I find I get really defensive about antagonists, especially when people are like “um this person is problematic so YOU CAN’T LIKE THEM!!” Because in my mind, most of the ‘villains’ are just really really human and their reasons behind their actions are what make them such compelling characters. Of course, if a character does something bad I’ll hardly ever defend them and say it was justified, I just think there’s more to it than every character’s motivations being black and white.

5. Show you fell out of love with?

Breaking Bad? I don’t know. I watched the first like... 3 seasons and then I just stopped caring about any of the characters and I thought it got really boring lol. If I don’t sympathize with any of the characters in something I can’t finish watching it because I don’t care anymore.
