Even in autumn at Helmsley Walled Garden, Yorkshire, UK, the annual Salvia viridis (annual sage, clary, painted sage, orval) was providing some late season colour. The two-lipped cream flowers are insignificant but have colourful bracts borne on upright stems, these modified leaves can be blue, pink or white.

Another crown of thorns, this variegated 'Northern De-Lites' is one of my favorites. 💚 The bracts (colored part of the flower) 🌸 are not very big but the foliage is the star of this plant. In the second picture, you will see that it has some stems that have reverted back to having plain green leaves. I will cut those stems off, because they could take over the plant. Why? Because all green leaves obviously have more chlorophyll than the variegated leaves so they will grow faster. Cut them off! ✂️ Have you had a variegated plant revert back to green? At the National Trust's Melford Hall, Long Melford, Sudbury, the Salvia sclarea var. turkestanica (sweaty betty, biennial clary) was producing tall stems bearing many pink to white bracts and soft blue and white tiny flowers. This hardy short-lived perennial or biennial will seed freely and grow in any reasonable soil in full sun. The plant does have a very distinctive scent!

Yesterday @matthaeinichols this gorgeous Euphorbia milii was blooming. Remember the flowers are the small yellowish things in the middle. The large pink "flowers" are actually modified leaves called bracts. The entire thing is called the cyathium. These plants are cousins of the poinsettia. I love using this #easymacro lens on my phone. This is the flower of the crown of thorns or Euphorbia milii 'Pink Cadillac'. The yellow part is the true flower and the pink part around are bracts. Both together are called the cyathium. This plant is in the same family as the poinsettia, whose colored bracts have made them the iconic Christmas plants they are.
