The large flower heads of Hylotelephium 'Herbstfreude' (stonecrop, sedum) start as waxy green buds exactly the same colour as the leaves, these then open to pink starry flowers which age to red, and finally as brown seedheads for the winter.

The ruby-red ray florets of Echinacea purpurea 'Rubinstern' (purple coneflower) spread horizontally from the brown central cone. This upright perennial is a reliable cultivar that thrives in a deep, well-drained, humus-rich soil in full sun although but they can tolerate some shade.

The white flowers of this Anemone × hybrida 'Honorine Jobert' (Japanese anemone) look great with the grey wood plank background. I have found these plants can be hard to establish but once happy they can become invasive so position where they can make a colony for an autumn display.
