Watching Yentl with my mom as an adult was such a funny experience. Like, I have no idea if the creators intended to make such a queer movie, but by Morrigan, they did. Mom and I had watched it when I was a child, and a lot flew over my head, but as an adult? Damn.

I started giggling when Avigdor and Anshel were doing their academic flirting thing. "What?" Mom asked. I pointed at the TV. "You realize they're flirting, right?" "They're not. They're friends," Mom argued. I laughed. "Uh-huh."

Then there was the tickling. And The Lake Scene. "Okay, I see it now," Mom said with a frown. I downright cackled. "Anshel and Avigdor sitting in a tree…" Mom rolled her eyes. "More like in the grass."

I squealed. "Yentl totally has a crush on Hadass now, too! The way she's looking at Hadass. Priceless." Mom huffed. "Hadass is gorgeous. Yentl is just… acknowledging Hadass' beauty." I was giggling non-stop. "Yeah, right. Is that what they called it in the 80s?" Mom shrugged and smiled. "Probably."

I was about to burst at this point Mom blinked at the screen. "They fell in love with each other." "They totally fell in love with each other! And you know what? If I'd been Yentl, I would have stayed with Hadass." "There were a couple of things Hadass would have noticed the next time she tried to debauch Yentl." "Was that a Mulan reference?" Mom smirked. "Yes. It fits." I laughed. "It so fits. And, eh, I bet Hadass would have eventually not minded Anshel-Yentl was her wife and not her husband." Mom hummed. "I'm not so sure." "Everybody's bisexual here, Mom. EVERYBODY." "What about when Hadass never got pregnant?" Mom asked. "People would have asked questions. Their community was too nosy." I shrugged. "Yentl could have said either of them was infertile." "Hmm."

"Bullshit!" I yelled. "Buuullshit. You were totally into the cute Twink, Avigdor. Own it!" "What's a twink?" Mom asked. "A pretty gay man." "Ah. But no. You're wrong. Avigdor could sense Yentl's femininity," Mom deadpanned. "With his sixth sense." "… You're kidding right?" "No. Avigdor has a sixth sense for this stuff, I tell you," she said, serious as can be. (She's eerily good at that.) "You are kidding, right?" I asked. Mom huffed and rolled her eyes. "Yes, I am. He was gay for Anshel-Yentl." I nodded. "Just like Shang was gay for Ping." Mom nodded. "Yep."

"You know what?" I said when the movie was over. "I changed my mind. They should have all stayed together and been a throuple. Anshel-Yentl could have easily explained their friend Avigdor coming to visit all the time. They were all in love with each other. It makes perfect sense." Mom scoffed. "Pervert." "I'm right, though. They could have moved to America together." Mom thought about it. "But Yentl wanted freedom. She wouldn't have gotten that tied to Avigdor." "Good point. Though, the way I see it, Yentl would have been the throuple leader. She's got bigger metaphorical balls than Avigdor could ever dream of having." Mom shrugged. "Alright. True." "I can't believe you didn't notice how queer this movie was when you first saw it," I said, shaking my head. "Neither did you." "I was seven. What's your excuse?" "I was in church and was taught everything gay was evil. And I just didn't notice." "It is pretty subtle," I conceded. "Maybe the ones who made the movie didn't intend it to be so queer. Or they knew how oblivious the straights are." "Or maybe Avigdor has a sixth sense that allows him to discover women in disguise," Mom said sarcastically. I snorted. "Yeah. It's called a nose. I bet Anshel smelled better than any other guy." "Like Mulan." "Yep. Or maybe Avigdor was bi as hell." Mom sighed with mock wistfulness. "I guess we'll never know." "Never."

Mulan Rewrite

I recently rewatched Mulan, the 1998 animated movie not the thing Disney made in 2020, and got hit with some creativity about a few things I would change.

In my rewrite the start of the movie is basically the same till Mulan runs away: the Huns attack the Great Wall, the Emperor sends out the conscription order, we meet Mulan, Honor to Us All, matchmaker, Reflection, Chi-Fu arrives with the conscription order, Mulan and her dad argue, Mulan runs way, Ancestors awake and Mushu decides to go after Mulan himself.

The only change I would make to the beginning of the movie is give Mulan two younger siblings. I'm taking this from the original Ballad of Hua Mulan (yes in the Ballad Mulan's sister is older, but I want Mulan to be the oldest sibling.) The Ballad doesn't give the brother and sister names so I'm calling them Hua Chun (12F) and Hua Wei (10M) they serve as another reason for Mulan to war in her dad's place, because her siblings are still young and need him in their lives. Mulan is 16.

So Mulan runs away, and after a few days, she sees the army camp in the distance. This is when Mulan and Mushu meet. Mushu is still the comic relief but is also really helpful. He points out that Mulan hasn't even come up with a fake name, and Mulan, after thinking for a bit she decides on Ping. Mulan explains that Ping was a friend of her dad's who served with him in the army and died in battle after saving his life.

Anyways Ping enters the army camp and is completely out of his element. Hijinks ensue, the rice is spilled, and the general of the army shows up.

Some explain. In this version Shang is a regular soldier, he is the son of a respected general and has promise to one day be a good general himself, but right now he's serving as a the assistant to the general overseeing this band of recruits.

Back to the story, General Jiao asks who's responsible for the mess, and everyone blames Ping. He's surprised to learn that "Ping" is the son of war hero Hua Zhou and says that he has very large shoes to fill, and so far, he's failing.

Skip to the next day and I'll Make a Man Out of You. During the song through day-night cycles its going to show that several days have gone by, about a week or two. By the end Ping earns the respect of his fellow soldiers, and Shang who Ping starts becoming friends with. General Jiao is impressed with Ping and tells him that he has his father's intelligence.

Shang approaches Ping and complements him for getting on General Jiao's good side. They talk for a bit, and Ping asks why Shang is overseeing some recruits rather than leading his own army to battle. Shang explains that about a month ago, he accidently launched one of their rockets into an armory, causing the whole place to blow up, and he was sent to the camp as a sort of punishment. Ping laughs, and Shang, embarrassed, asks Ping not to tell anyone, Ping agrees on the grounds that Shang beats him in a race to a tree on top of a nearby hill. Shang accepts the challenge, and the two race, Shang wins, Ping agrees to keep their previous conversation a secret. The two start walking back towards the camp and as they do Shang looks at Ping, this cute recruit that he's started seeing in a strange new light, and he unknowingly started reaching for his hand but as soon as their hands touch Shang pulls away. Ping apologizes, but Shang tells him not to think about it.

The next day, the army gets mobilization orders, real ones not ones made up by Muchu and Cri Kee, and the army packs up and starts marching towards the front. During A Girl Worth Fighting For, Ping opts to sing along to not draw too much attention to himself. I think he'd say something along the lines of, "A girl well versed in philosophy, who always speaks her mind." This gets a chuckle out of the others, and Shang says he respects Ping's taste.

The army sees the destroyed village and the battle field, General Jiao orders everyone to search for survivors. While searching, Ping finds the girl's doll and picks it up. Ping eventually meets back up with the army as Chien Po returns with General Li's helmet and sword and gives them to Shang. Shang sticks the sword to the ground and places his dad's helmet on it, kneels down, and says a silent prayer. General Jiao gives Shang his condolences, but quickly orders the army to head out, saying they have to head towards the Tung Shao Pass to intercept the Huns before they reach the Imperial City. As the army starts to move, Ping kneels down next to Shang and hugs him, Shang hugs him back. Then Shang sees the doll, takes it, and rests it against his dad's sword. Shang and Ping get up and join the rest of the army.

As the army moves through the Tung Shao Pass, they are discovered by the Huns and a battle ensues. The Huns have larger numbers and the edge in the battle. With only one rocket left, Ping takes it, runs in front of the army, and aims it towards a high snow-covered mountain top. By the time Ping is able to launch the rocket, Shan Yu almost reaches Ping. Shan Yu taunts Ping, mocking him for missing at point-blank range, and Ping grins. Shan Yu looks back to see the rocket hit the mountain and the start of the avalanche. Furious,Shang Yu attacks Ping.

Then we have the scene where Ping saves Shang when they fall off the cliff. After reaching safe ground, Shang, thanks Ping, calling him the craziest man he's ever met. But not long after Ping passes out front the wound he got from Shan Yu.

After waking up, Mulan's identity is revealed. Chi Fu demands Mulan be executed, but General Jiao lets her live, saying she saved everyone's life but still leaves her alone in the mountain.

Mulan is ready to turn home when she discovers the Shan Fu, and a few Huns survived the avalanche. She rides towards the city and tries to warn Shang and General Jiao of an attack, but they both silently ignore her. A while later, the Huns attack and capture the Emperor. While trying to save the Emperor, General Jiao is injured by Shan Yu. Shang takes the lead of the rescue mission, and he and a few soldiers try to break down the doors of the palace using brute force.

Mulan arrives on the scene and draws their attention, saving she has an idea. Yao, Ling, and Chien Po quickly follow her, followed by Shang. They scale pillars and enter the palace, specifically the wing where the concubines live. Mulan has Yao, Ling, and Chien Po as concubines to distract the guards so she and Shang can reach Shan Fu and the Emperor.

A fight ensues, Shan Fu's remaining Huns are apprehended, Yao, Ling, and Chien Po escape with the Emperor, and Mulan cuts the rope so Shan Fu can't follow them. Shan Fu goes to kill Shang when Mulan reviles herself to be the soldier that destroyed Shang Fu's army. Shang Fu furious chases her across the palace till they get on the roof. Looking around, Mulan sees the tower with the fireworks and asks Mushu to get her the largest one.

As Mushu gets the rocket, Mulan and Shan Fu fight, and eventually, she disarms him using her hand fan, just in time for Mushu to arrive and light the rocket. The rocket sends Shan Fu flying to the firework tower and is blown up. Mulan, Muchu, and Cri-Kee safely get off the roof before the explosion and land on the steps to the Palace.

Shang runs up to Mulan and hugs her, glad she's safe. Shang tells her that using the fireworks was an insane idea. Mulan laughs, saying she got the idea from him. Shang laughs, embarrassed, and reminds Mulan she promised to keep his accident a secret, Mulan tells him his secret is safe with her. Then Yao, Ling, and Chien Po show up and congratulate Mulan. They're followed by General Jiao, who congratulates Mulan, telling her she is as great a soldier as her father.

Then Chi Fu shows up and berates Shang, Yao, Ling, Chien Po, and General Jiao telling them to stand aside. Shang stands up to defend Mulan when the Emperor shows up.

The Emperor silently tells tells them to step aside and looks at Mulan. Mulan bows to him as he goes on his speech on all the laws Mulan has broken in the last few weeks "I've heard a great deal about you Hua Mulan, you stole your father's armor, ran away from home, impersonated a soldier, deceived your commanding officer, dishonored the Chinese army, destroyed my palace, and... you have saved us all." Then the Emperor bows to Mulan as everyone else in courtyard kowtows to Mulan.

The Emperor offers Mulan a job in his council, but Mulan asks to go back home. The Emperor accepts and gives her his medallion and the sword of Shan Fu.

As she leaves, Mulan hugs Yao, Ling, and Chien Po, General Jiao shakes her hand, and then she goes to Shang, who tells her, "You fight good." Mulan sadly walks past him as she mounts Khan and rides home as the crowd cheers.

Shang looks at Mulan riding away as the Emperor walks towards him. At first, the Emperor tries to be nice and says, "The flower that blooms in adversity is the rarest and most beautiful of all." Seeing that Shang is not getting the hint, the Emperor talks bluntly and tells Shang."You don't meet a girl like that every dynasty!" and walks away.

Cut to a few says later at the Hua residence. Mulan arrives home to see her dad sitting in the garden under the cheery blossom tree. Hua Zhou is shocked to see her, but before he can say kneels before him and gives him the sword of Shan Yu and the Emperor's medallion. Zhou throws them aside and hugs Mulan, telling her, "The greatest gift in honor is having you for a daughter."

Mulan's siblings run to her and hug her. They immediately start asking Mulan questions about her adventure, and Zhou tells them to give Mulan some room to breathe.

We switch to Mulan's mom and grandma looking at the other with the Grandma, saying that Mulan should have brought a man. At that moment, Shang shows up, asking if Mulan lives there, and the Hua Li and Grandma Hua point toward Mulan.

Shang walks towards Mulan and Zhou. Shang bows to Hua Zhou. After seeing Mulan, he tries to give her back her helmet but starts to panic a little. Mulan looks at her dad, who silently gives her a go-ahead. Mulan takes the helmet and invites Shang to stay for dinner. Grandma Hua in the background invites Shang to stay forever. Shang accepts, despite having Chun and Wei glaring at him from behind Mulan.

The Ancestors restore Muchus' status as a Hua family guardian.

End of movie.

Overall I didn't make that many changes mostly adding a few extra scenes here and there. But Mulan is already almost flawless, so there's not much that does need change.

During the credits, I would add in a few drawings showing what all the characters are up to after the war. Mulan is home, teaching some local kids some basic marshal arts techniques like she did at the beginning of Mulan II. Shang is now a general training soldiers. Mushu's statue is proudly displayed among the Hua family gradians. And so on for other major characters like Yao, Ling, and Chien Po.

Chapter 2: Some Pictures

As you went out of the gift shop after the Guardians of the Galaxy ride, all of you passed across Avengers Campus.

While walking, you spot Shang Chi. “Guys look! It’s Shang Chi!” You pointed at him which made him wave at your group.

“Yo he makes me feel so included guys.” Sunghoon joked which made you laugh as you passed by Shang Chi. A few steps down, almost the end of Avengers Campus, you spot another Avenger. “OMG Look, it's Black Panther!” You excitedly said as everyone looked at Black Panther. “Do you want a photo with Black Panther?” Sunghoon asked you and you shook your head in embarrassment of your excited tone just being so obvious you wanted the photo.

“If I’m the only one who would take a picture, it’s fine guys.” You said reassuring them when Sunghoon added in.

“No it’s ok. I also want a photo.” He said with a smile as you excitedly went up to Black Panther. Elisa and Jennie looked at each other questioningly, then looked at you but you just smiled at them and shrugged it off.

In a snap, you guys were back on track, walking to the next ride. “Do you guys want me to send the picture in the groupchat?” Sunghoon said as he looked at the photos. “Yes please!” Jennie said as she was skipping with Elisa. You were too busy waiting for the picture to send in the groupchat so that you would have something to send to your mother. And as soon as the photo got sent, you directly sent it to your mother without double thinking.

As you look up from your phone, you see that you guys almost fully passed Cars Land. “Yo cars! This was my childhood.” You said out of pocket and out loud as the other two girls were still skipping. 

Your phone pinged, so you looked down to see that your mom liked the photo you sent with a small message from her to remember to have fun. In thought, you looked to the floor, to notice the floor was a tad wet from fog. The floor was also declining downwards so you started to walk slower while using your phone.

Slowly walking you see Sunghoon pass by from behind you and stopped a bit in front of you for a sign to catch up.

You tried your best to walk faster but ended up walking slowly again.

As you guys were entering San Fransokyo Square, you see the sign you've been seeing in videos. So for a quick second, you started to take a picture of the sign for your instagram until you could see Sunghoon in your peripheral vision turn around to see you taking a picture of the sign. “Guys wait, Yn's taking a picture.” He said to the others to make them turn around and stop.

You didn't know if you heard it wrong but you shrugged it off.

“No it’s ok guys. I just wanted to take a picture of the sign. I’ll follow along.” You try to indirectly tell them to start walking again. “No it’s ok. Do you want me to take a picture of you?” Sunghoon spoke as he walked closer to you but you replied. “Are you guys sure? I’m the only one who wants to take a photo so it’s fine. You can wait for me by the line.” You spoke again in defense as Sunghoon started walking closer to you than usual, trying to get your phone from you while the others walked to you both. “No, it’s awkward.” You turned down again, hiding your phone behind your back. “Why not let’s just take a selfie guys.” Elisa spoke out as you nodded in defeat.

“Can someone with the longest arms take the photo?” You waved your phone in the air, hoping Jennie would pick up your phone when Sunghoon spoke. “That would be me!” He snatched your phone from your hand as we started to gather up for the sign. You smiled for the picture as he took a couple of pictures and gave you your phone. “I feel like I was going to drop your phone.” He said, talking about how your phone didn’t have a phone case, you just laughed at his statement.

“Anywhere else you want to take a picture?” Elisa said as you guys started walking again. “Woah, look at the bridge!!” You pointed at the small Golden Gate Bridge while doing little jumps in excitement. “Do you want me to take a picture of you by the gate?” Sunghoon said and without hesitation, you gave him your phone and waited for people to walk away from the bridge to get a picture. As you walk towards the center of the bridge, you look up to pose just to see Sunghoon freeze. You were about to start scolding him to hurry up until Elisa just snatched your phone and started to take your photos.

“We should get a group photo!” Jennie said and everyone cheered with the idea. “Ok but I’m not asking a stranger.” Jennie said. “Me too.” Elisa also responded. “I think I can ask someone.” You said as you were going to a cast member but you see Sunghoon already asking someone to take the group photo.

You were taken off guard knowing Sunghoon was a full on introvert back in school but you shrugged it off again.

As you guys thanked the person who took the photo, you guys started walking to the Pixar Pier.

“Do you know that there’s some snow cones in the pier that I love? Can we get some later? They seem closed right now.” He asked as we passed by the stall, bummed out that it was still closed.

You happen to turn when you see Shan Yu behind your general and friend Li Shang fighting 3 other huns on his own, not seeing shan behind him ready to take him out but you were going to make sure that wouldn't happen to anyone let alone someone you cared about if you had any say in it. You run jumping and tackling shan yu managing to get good hits even cutting his shoulder, rolling and moving quickly in between the hits with your sword before you got hit and thrown a few feet away from him hitting your back on a rock slowly leaning up seeing Chien Po and ling running to where you were, fearing that you and shang had gotten hurt instead you all see shang and mulan disguised as her alias Ping fighting while the boys ran to you after seeing you across from them leaned on the rock you hit. You groan in pain as chien po lifts you and puts you on his shoulder running to hide from the avalanche with shang and mulan behind you looking at them until you couldn't see them running to find them, getting caught in the avalanche finding mulan's horse Khan not to far getting on him looking for your friends seeing nothing but snow until you looked behind you and see a red cape. You immediately get and grab him looking until you hear a gasp seeing mulan nearby "Mulan! Over here!" she gets on in front of you as you see the edge of the cliff going over until you stopped mid air seeing the rope on khan smiling in relief as you guys are helped until as you and shang step on the ground the rocks below you collapse screaming as you fall grabbing hold of a steep part of the cliff holding on to shang hearing everyone yelling. Soon you see the rope next to you after climbing up on an edge putting shang over your shoulders and grabbing the rope as everyone gets you up and away from the cliff "Step away they need air" you look at each other as you catch your breath "You are two of the craziest men I ever met...and for that I owe you both my life from now on both of you have my trust" you smile as everyone cheers until you heard mulan yell in pain seeing the wound and immediately knowing that the secret you both had kept was gonna be exposed. You grab her and run in the medic tent, carefully treating her wound shaking as you try to sew the wound up until shang grabs your arm doing it as you notice one just above your chest "Do you still trust me?" You take your armor off closing your eyes until you hear a sword and feel something warm under your chin opening your eyes to see his fingers holding your chin with his sword in the corner. He patches you up thanking him as you hold your armor "You're my friend and you saved my life my debt is repaid and I trust you" you smile putting your armor on telling everyone of mulan's condition relieved she recovered going to celebrate victory until the huns came and took the emperor fighting shan yu with shang deciding to give shang an up throwing both your shoes at shan yu "I was the one you threw at the rock". You pull your hair back and with your helmet on as he realizes "Show how much you trust me" you say running as he follows you fighting him giving shang time to get him stuck as the fireworks hit him both of you holding lanterns until you both jumped landing on mulan who was looking for the both of you smiling and hugging each other as you join the boys and end up being rewarded for saving China by the emperor going back home to your family who heard the news being proud of you. You were holding your baby sister when you heard your brother say someone was here for you turning to see shang smiling big hugging and inviting him for dinner and soon after the two of you began dating and joining him on his adventures with your friends and mulan after getting engaged.

i just got through it in two hours and the basic premise is when mulan makes the avalanche and shan yu swings his sword at her,,,,, it’s shang who gets hurt due toi him jumping in front of the blade. mulan is never injured and therefore her true identity hasnt been revealed (yet) and the all of the huns are dead

mulan, as ping, feels guilty for it and takes care of him while hes bleeding out and realizes hes dying so she has to go to the underworld to save his life 

this book has everything i loved from the movie and gives me more

So in the "Be a Man" training montage for Mulan we see Shang giving her one on one sparring lessons. He's also always keeping an eye on her during group activities. Then he tries to send her home so she doesn't get killed. I def think Shang is bi. But my question is: do we think he'd already fallen for Ping before Ping proved to be a good warrior? Or was he just worried about the scrawny kid?
