Christmas countdown with my archive of winter-themed illustrations DAY 13:
Created for a children’s theater production of THE LION THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE.
Working in picture books I don’t often get a chance to create visual-analogy based images. So when I can it’s a real treat!

“Your hair

“Les

“Leslie.”
“Mmhm?”
Les barely stirred in his sleep and the iridescent golden speckles in his dreads already started to dull and the rest of his hair started to darken. It was as if a large cloud had just passed over them and blocked out the sun during this uneventful, pleasant afternoon nap.
Floyd snapped out of his surprise, but only partially as he fisted the desaturating hair in a thoughtless attempt to hold onto the fleeting moment. But much like sand, the harder he squeezed the quicker the color and shine drained between his fingers as Les roused.
Sensing Floyd’s distress, he quickly lifted his head.
“What’s wrong?”
Floyd felt tongue-tied, still stunned from what he had just witnessed. He was staring at Les—the familiar dark-haired Les that he knew all the quirks and details of better than the back of his own hand—, and who he was now trying to picture with the out-of-nowhere sparkles and saturated brightness. But he hadn’t even noticed the change appearing, and by the time he realized what he was seeing, it was already gone.
“Your dreads
” he finally blurted out, “they were golden.”
The crease of worry between Les’s brows smoothed out into a more relaxed look of confusion.
“It’s just a dirty yellow-green color,” he said while glancing to the right, at his three dreads flopping over the side of his face. “But I guess it sometimes looks a bit like gold in the—”
“No, I mean for real. And your hair was bright,” Floyd cut in, “like, as bright as mine.”
Les hesitated, trying to process Floyd’s steady wide-eyed expression, before pulling a strand of his dark purple hair in front of his face. He inspected it carefully but decided it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary the way Floyd claimed.
“My hair’s always been this shade. Are you feeling okay?”

on one hand yeah this is the kitty cat book fandom where at least 95% of the people here are just here to draw funny cats or for nostalgia reasons and it's really not that deep, there is nothing wrong with taking a critical backseat on this one. but on the other, the amount of people in the fandom who seem to genuinely believe that children's literature and xenofiction are both somehow inherently unworthy of any form of criticism whatsoever, to the point where random tumblr posts casually identifying shit like.... themes.... and narrative trends... is looking into things way too deeply and makes you a bad or stupid person in some way because "they're just cats", gives the literature student in me such a headache

Something very sweet to me about Dhurke revealing that he had a lot of odd jobs before he became a lawyer. Like, of course Apollo's dad coincidentally lines up with the exact chaotic vibe of The Wright Anything Agency. Of course we return to the grounded reality that pursuing Truth and Justice is all well and good, but sometimes, you just gotta keep the lights on. And of course one of those odd jobs was street busker, making this YET ANOTHER RELATIVE OF APOLLO'S WHO IS A MEMEBER OF THE PERFORMING ARTS. HE CANNOT ESCAPE THEM.

Kirara drawing because I want to practice art and I love her!!!
I had to simplify her design a lot for the sake of my sanity, so I apologise!
(Also, constructive criticism is appreciated because I really want to improve!)

How To Pee Your Pants* *the right way by Rachel Michelle Wilson. Feiwel and Friends, 2024. 9781250910172. 32pp.
This book has helpful advice on how to hide the evidence, how to find some clean "clothes" to wear after an accident, and how to be a great friend. I loved Wilson's panicked, sad little bird, especially the way he dances at the end. (This book is the perfect companion to Gotta Go! by Frank Viva from Toon Books. https://librarycomic.com/picture-book-reviews-18/ )
I Know How to Draw an Owl by Hilary Horder Hippely and Matt James. Neal Porter, 2024. 978823456666. 32pp.
I saw this on several years best picture book lists, and if I made one it would be on mine as well. After Ms. Rio's class draws owls, she holds up Belle's as an example and asks how Bell made her owl's eyes so wise. The secret Belle doesn't want to share has to do with where Belle lives, in a car in the woods with her mom. (This book has a perfect ending, which is also about being a great friend.)
Stopping By Jungle On A Snowy Evening by Richard T. Morris, illustrated by Julie Rowan-Zoch. Caitlyn Dlouhy, 2024. 9781481478021. 40pp.
A young boy out riding a blue hippo in a snowstorm encounters the poet Robert Frost. He's supposed to be riding a horse, not a hippopotamus. Hippos live in the jungle, so the boy changes Frost's poem slightly. But it doesn't snow in the jungle, so he changes it more. Frost keeps wanting to go back to his original poem, but the boy resists, particularly after the hippo falls asleep. He wants action! So he brings in an enormous snake, karate, and more.
Worth noting: Robert Frost's original poem "Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening" is reproduced on the last page.

I made this a few days ago and kept forgetting to post it, but here's Komoe's witch Velveteen!
"The witch of holes with a grateful nature.
She longs for the day a magical girl will come and end her. She understands, accepts, and embraces the fate and role of a witch: and happily lures magical girls to her labyrinth. The holes that cover her labyrinth are impossible to navigate in order to force all girls who enter to be or become magical girls to have any hope of escape."
EDIT: Slightly updated colors and textures to make it look nicer!
