The man who had been chief engineer at South Africa’s state-owned passenger rail company has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for faking his qualifications.

Once hailed for his successful career, Daniel Mthimkhulu was head of engineering at the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) for five years - earning an annual salary of about 2.8m rand ($156,000; £119,000).

On his CV, the 49-year-old claimed to have had several mechanical engineering qualifications, including a degree from South Africa’s respected Witwatersrand University as well as a doctorate from a German university.

However, the court in Johannesburg heard that he had only completed his high-school education.

“The sentence sends a strong message that the perpetrators of white-collar crime will not go unpunished," said Phindi Mjonondwane, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

"I failed to correct the perception that I have it. I just became comfortable with the title. I did not foresee any damages as a result of this,” he said.

Lt-Gen Seswantsho Godfrey Lebeya, the head of South Africa’s elite Hawks police unit that helped bring the prosecution, also welcomed the sentence.

“This should serve as a lesson to would be fraudsters that crime doesn’t pay," he said.

The Hawks said this was a case linked to "state capture", a term used in South Africa to describe widespread corruption that occurred under Jacob Zuma when he was president from 2009 until 2018.

Mthimkhulu is reportedly planning to appeal.

Mình cũng chưa hiểu rõ lắm tất cả mọi thứ, nhưng mà được ngồi bàn về những thứ chuyên của JICA hơn, xuất Letter hay xem các mục mà JICA có thể chi trả, làm mình thấy công việc có ý nghĩa hơn một chút.

Và mình đã đặt nhiều câu hỏi, mình thấy mình tiến bộ nhiều hơn là khi mình biết đưa ra câu hỏi cho manager của mình. Và có những câu mà đã phải làm anh Tsuchimoto ngẫm nghĩ, hoặc còn nói là 'thats a good question', đấy là một động lực lớn với mình. Mình nhận ra rằng, nhờ cái đống A/C dày ngập 1 bàn của 2 tuần vừa rồi cũng như 8 tháng ở dự án, mình biết nhiều hơn nhiều. Thôi thì có công sức thì cũng có chút thành quả vậy.

Mọi chuyện vẫn ổn cho tới khi mình nhận ra jichou thực sự mệt mỏi vì công việc, phải nằm cả ra bàn. Nhưng mình cũng rất nể rằng anh ý có thể thể hiện cảm xúc của mình rất rõ và không nề hà gì bảo là mình mệt hay 体調が悪い. Và mình muốn đeo khẩu trang, như kiểu để trốn đi vậy, thế mà cũng ok phết, chỉ là bị sếp bảo 'しんどいの?'.

Có vẻ cũng có một niềm vui nhỏ trong buổi chiều là anh Hiếu mang xoài cho mình, và jichou nhìn thấy xong cười vui luôn, còn ăn rồi bảo mình mang đi chia cho mọi người thử với chứ. Còn mở ví ra nhìn mình xong mình giơ hiệu tay dấu X, nhất định không cho trả tiền, xong còn bảo 'em không cho anh trả bằng tiền thì khi nào anh trả bằng cái khác nhé', cũng yêu.

Chưa kể hôm qua mình gửi cái link triển lãm ánh sáng như Teamlab, thì sáng ông còn reply là 'We must go there.".

Thực sự với mình thì không ai có thể làm mình bị ảnh hưởng cảm xúc hay lo nghĩ gì được, chỉ có những người thực sự quan trọng với mình mới làm vậy được, và jichou là một trong số những người đấy. Mình phải cố gắng tỉnh táo, tuần sau uống phindi kem sữa như vâu cho tỉnh người vậy, làm sao thì làm ^^ sống cho ra con người nha nấm
