Terror Train
Tubiâs 2022 remake of the Canadian slasher TERROR TRAIN (1980), directed by Philippe Gagnon, looks better technically than the original, and Tim Rozon as the magician is a distinct improvement over David Copperfield, who, letâs face it, was never much of an actor. It also ups the gore factor, but that doesnât necessarily make for a better picture. Perhaps it plays better for those who have never seen the original, which wasnât all that good in the first place, but I would have greatly preferred the dark cinematography of that version to the impersonal, bright color palette that only serves to show up the threadbare story and kind of meh performances. There are a few surprises if youâve seen the 1980 film, but there are also places where youâre saying, âNow she grabs the fire extinguisherâ and âHere comes the decapitation.â
The remake only adds a few new elements to the story. The college students whose pranks send a freshman to the hospital are now pre-med students, which makes some of their deaths seem a service to humanity. The prankâs ringleader, Doc (Matias Lucas), is so vile and irresponsible granting him a medical degree would be tantamount to mass murder. The group is also multicultural, which is fine as a reflection of changing times. I just wish they were as interesting as the original group, which included Jamie Leigh Curtis and Hart Bochner. Anyway, three years after the prank, the future doctors of some unspecified North American country are celebrating graduation on a party train when someone starts killing them off. Final girl Robyn Alomar, who had only reluctantly participated in the prank without realizing how severe it was, enlists the aid of train conductors Mary Walsh and Nadine Bhabha in roles originally played by men, another adaptation for changing times and a welcome one. Walsh, a skilled comic actor, has some great line readings and is more than capable of filling Ben Johnsonâs shoes. In fact, I now want to see a remake of THE LAST PICTURE SHOW (1971) with Walsh as Sam the Lion. I smell an Oscar, which is better than anything one might smell watching TERROR TRAIN.

Transhumanism in the light of theology, philosophy and science â critical perspective and Christian metaphysical implications,
Faculty of Letters, Theology and History of the West University Timisoara will organizes the International Conference with the topic âTranshumanism in the light of theology, philosophy and science â critical perspective and Christian metaphysical implicationsâ (TimiÈoara, November 4-7, 2021). In this academic event we will bring the transhumanist ideal into conversation with modern philosophy and Christian theology. We are inviting you to participate in this conference to examine, from the perspective of philosophy and theology, the recent cultural movement calling itself transhumanism, that combines biology with technology, enhancing our bodies and brains with scientific innovation, seeking to overcome the limitations of our flesh.
The dialogue between science, theology and philosophy lately has managed a notable move in a fresh creative direction. This is owed largely to his principal aim of juxtaposing the conventional modern philosophical and cosmological concerns with the theological ideas and methods of the early Church Fathers. Therefore, the main objective of this conference is to advance the science and theology discourse along an existential route, employing Patristic ideas toward a new synthesis with modern philosophy and science and, thus, to locate scientific knowledge and faith as twin activities of the contemporary shared human subjectivity.
Technology has become constitutive of the identity of modern human being. The incorporation of technology into human self-understanding has alarmed both theologians and secular humanists â technology applied to the inner life dehumanizes us. No amount of increased intelligence will redeem us from what the theologians call sin. Human nature is not capable of changing through the augmentation of intelligence. There is here a confusion of sociological evolution with spiritual progress.
The theologian looks forward to the divine transformation or deification, and not to enhance human intelligence through technological augmentation. A full answer to the problems inherent within the dream of transhumanism would have to include a revaluation of personhood. There is a theological response that will be shared by all Christians: the human person is made in the image of God.As the debate grows in urgency, how should theology respond? The scholars that have joined for this conference are voices that together want to bring fresh insight into the technologies that are already reshaping the future of Christian life and hope. Technological dehumanization versus Godâs promise for ultimate transformation (theosis) â this is the debate about.Â
What will Christian theology to the transhuman ideal, as a kind of alternative story of salvation? Transhumanism can mean overcoming our garment of flesh, and the reformation of human knowledge through the sciences also means to fight against the Fall of man, resembling a nature rivaling its creator.
This calls on Christians to understand and engage with some of the deep issues facing the church in a technological, transhumanist future and to considers how technology can help or harm genuine spiritual transformation. Are there theological insights and spiritual practices that can help Christians face the challenge of living in a technological world without being dangerously conformed to its values? This calls on the Christians to understand and engage with the deep issues facing the church in a technological, transhumanist future.
Is this transhumanist belief (their faith and trust in a combination of biological evolution and technological progress) acceptable to contemporary science? Perhaps not. But, we can do here a theological and philosophical critique of it. Christianity is the real challenge to transhumanism, not the other way around.

------ Last of the boat carpenters First single, only single, from the forthcoming album "Ma DĂ©lire â Songs of love, lost & found" (out october first 2021).«Au cĆur de ma dĂ©lire» is first and foremost the song that gave birth to this album's project. The end result of a love affair for a very oldsong recorded by Philippe Gagnon & Dominique Trembley in 1971, it was created during a residency at the Old Mill of Le Bic (QuĂ©bec), at the workshopof rowboat carpenter Daniel Saint-Pierre. One can hear the voice of Daniel, telling stories, the noise of his machines and tools, and the «maman» calls of a todler who would not be left out of her mom's recordings. One hears a strange song, a she-delirium (the word «delire», usually masculine, is here feminine), that lost nothing through the years of the poignant feeling it arises. Now available on Bandcamp  & other digital platforms.

"ALLEGED BANDITS APPEAR IN COURT," Montreal Star. June 2, 1933. Page 3. ---- Six Men Face Charges of Armed Hold-ups-Five Committed ---- Charged with having held up Lucien Berthiaume, employe of the Catelli Macaront Company, 305 Bellechasse street, on May 12, and stolen the pay roll of $2,237, Lucien Hogue, George Starke and Philippe Dulude, no addresses, appeared in court this morning. Dulude could not be identified as one of the three men involved in the affair and he was acquitted. Hogue and Starke were committed for voluntary statement on June 9. Berthiaume and D. Gingras, another employe of the company, present when the hold-up took place, both identified Hogue and Starke. Miss Edna Guertin, who testified that she met Hogue on the day of the hold-up. spoke of being in a room with him in which she saw a box full of money. She read an account of the robbery in a newspape, she stated, and Hogue said. "They won't get me." Hogue, who had no counsel, asked if he had not instead said, "They won't get them," but she refused to change her testimony. In addition they were charged with the theft of the payroll of the Gagnon & Lachapelle Company, on the same date, when more than $4.000 was taken. Miss Guertin, witness in the earlier case, was called again. She was markedly reluctant to testify until Judge Lacroix threatened her with jail unless she were more frank in her answers. The case was postponed until Monday. OTHER CHARGES Charged with four hold-ups, John Clark and Romeo Gibeault, no addresses, appeared in the police court this morning. The first charged faced was that of holding up the Caron drug store, 2001 Laurier avenue east on May 6. Gustave Chevalier, clerk in the store, told of two men coming in and taking money and a quantity of drugs. He identified Gibeault, but not Clark. The former was committed for voluntary statement, on June 9, and the latter acquitted. The second charge was that of holding up the clerk in a drug store at 4644 St. Denis street, on the Friday preceding Easter. He identified Clark, but not Gibeault. The former was committed for voluntary state- ment on June 9 and the latter acquitted. Clark was likewise Identified as one of the two who held up the Leduc Pharmacy, St. Denis and Vil- leray streets on the same night. He was committed for trial on this charge on June 9. Finally, Clark, Gibeault, and Lucien Mayer appeared jointly charged with attempted hold-up of the office of the tramway company on Mount Royal avenue, on May 14. Detectives Poirier and Coulombe spoke of seeing the three men enter the office, and of following them within a few seconds. They found Clark and Gibeault with revolvers in their hands. Mayer was carrying a black valise, they stated.
The trio were committed for voluntary statement on June 9.
