Teacup: More Alien Parasites in the Woods
Peacock’s Teacup is set in the country. It entertains the premise that yet more alien parasites are in the woods. Their intent is thus far uncertain, but there is certainly no teddy bear’s picnic in this forest. The story Teacup starts with a woman in the woods. She is desperately trying to remove a strap from her wrists. She is bloody and scared. The woman is also mumbling what sound like…

Movies watched in 2024
Genesis (2018, Canada)
Director & Writer: Philippe Lesage
Mini-review:
Man, I don't really know what to say about this movie. It starts off quite well, as a pretty sensitive and intimate representation of late adolescence and early adulthood. But then it goes completely off the rails during the final 40 minutes or so. For starters, it suddenly hits you with a couple of disturbing twists that don't even fit with the tone. And after that, it drops the initial story entirely and focuses on a bunch of new characters for the last 20 minutes. I'm sure it's supposed to mean something, but I didn't get it at all. That being said, Noée Abita and Théodore Pellerin turn in two beautiful, nuanced performances. All in all, Genesis ended up being rather disappointing.

At first, Jeanne Leblanc's "Les Notres" appears concerned with adult business: Jean-Marc Ricard (Paul Doucet), a middle-aged mayor of a small town in the Quebec province, addresses a banquet fundraiser by first evoking the tragic factory explosion from a few years before that claimed the lives of several residents, including his own good friend and neighbor. It then shifts to the concerns of teenagers, however, including Magalie (Emilie Bierre), the 13-year-old daughter of the deceased friend in question, in attendance with the remaining members of her family, before we realize the film is actually a heinous combination of both.

Movie Review: Canadian teen wants to keep her secret, and the baby she sees as "Les Notres (Our Own)"
Movie Review: Canadian teen wants to keep her secret, and the baby she sees as “Les Notres (Our Own)”
A reminder to parents who might consider checking out the suspenseful Canadian drama “Les Notres” in a cinema. It’s rude to throw things at the screen, and not great manners to shout at it. But variations of “Oh COME on!” are a perfectly understandable response to the outrage depicted in Jeanne Leblanc’s film. A girl (Emilie Bierre) who lost her father in a tragic accident years before is…
