Redman presents cuts from his latest album, Where Are We, a medication on the complexities of America, featuring new collaborator vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa. In "Chicago Blues," Redman's take on a Count Basie classic, and a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Streets of Philadelphia," Cavassa and Redman dance over the anchoring grooves from bassist Philip Norris and drummer Nazir Ebo, while pianist Paul Cornish delivers a stunning improvised transition between the two songs. For the final selection, Redman opens with an improvisation on "America the Beautiful." The traditional, patriotic tune is a stark contrast to the ugly inspiration for the plaintive "After Minneapolis" that follows, about the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer. The song's growing maelstrom surrounds Redman's haunting wails and Cavassa's mournful interpretation of Redman's lyrics. Throughout, Redman's solos serve to illustrate why he is one of today's best saxophonists.

philip making mary happy like she was 10 is a line i remember from her Children of England bio. so "for the first time since she was ten, when her father's eye had first lighted upon anne boleyn, she was truly happy." it's anne's fault again! so i guess weir wrote this novel from reading all her old books again, and not updating it with modern theories. which is kind of like endorsing herself.
also, she says mary had "dreams" about philip, "reliving the delights" iykwim. weird she changed that part.
the boleyn years are actually the only section of the book where weir imagined and wrote out long, extended, creatively reimagined scenes and conversations between characters; pretty much everything else, up till her marriage with philip, reads like a summary of events, either paraphrases or literal verbatim excerpts from her previous works. but, as she herself said in the author's note, the only piece of her life weir sympathizes for was her 'victimization' by anne boleyn; after that she says her sympathy for her is over (an objectively wild thing to say...no sympathy for the execution of her maternal surrogate in 1541? fr?). one gets the sense that the dialogue she gives mary concerning this is 100% what weir wishes she had said to her own father's 'other woman', that she never got the chance to say (tl; dr, revenge fantasy...i still have so many questions about that a/n...her mother was threatened with jail??)
she repeats the line about dreams; ('she was tormented by sensual dreams, in which [they were] making love'), however the actual portrayal of their sex scenes makes it explicit that she doesn't experience orgasm with her husband:
"this time she began to feel, in the core of her body, some tingle of response [...] but he was pressing on heedlessly to his climax and the moment was lost anyway."
and that is...the closest she ever gets.
she does this with her AB novel as well, which i just attributed to her hating her, because she portrays that in such a roundabout way...there's 'no alchemy' between her and henry (of like, all historical couples, this seems like a reach), and the evidence she could've used to support the choice (although, i think it's pretty clear now, especially from this A/N, where she says her own mother = coa, and this other woman in her own past = anne, that it was because she found it gratifying to write about anne suffering and unhappy and lacking pleasure in her life, again...revenge fantasy/transference) she dismisses (the 'vigor nor virtue' quote is a 'lie' from jane boleyn out of spite, anne even has the thought that it's 'not true'...?).
#anon#nsfw/#anyway. i have more to say about the portrayal that i'll add to later when i have the time#i think it's either animus for certain women and/or her own personal beliefs about their compatibility or lack that inspired these choices#coa and jane apparently have pleasurable sex with their husband#but with mary i think she honestly wrote it that way bcus like she says. her respect for her as a person is as over as it is for AB once sh#'steals' henry from coa and ruins mary's life etc...#it's kind of a...not sex negative per say...but yk. it's like a harlequin conservative women fantasy. if you get me?#where when they're god of their world the rule is there's no pleasure in sex if it's not 'mutual love'#ie anne doesn't love henry so she doesn't experience pleasure with him#philip (as she pretty much confirms about 20 times...mary tells him she loves him and he never says it back) doesn't love mary so#she doesn't experience pleasure with him.#well. i guess it is sex negative. bcus obviously the men are but the women aren't in these dynamics#no pleasure in sex for *women* if not mutual love etc#also in both cases there's an alternate that weir implies they could've had this with in a 'better world'#for AB it's norris; for mary it's chapuys#well...there's a few. she believes pole would've been a better husband but that she would've never 'loved him like philip'#renard it seems to mainly be lust-based. chapuys is the love connection#that mary constantly wishes she could marry#her main thought when she hears cromwell was executed was that she's flattered he wanted to marry her#and believes that's why he 'saved' her in 1536#so she doesn't seem to doubt that particular facet of the accusations...?

Demon Wind (1990)
One compliment you can give Demon Wind is that the title is just about perfect. This is a fart from Hell, and it’s nasty enough to peel paint. Unfortunately, the few scenes that might make it enjoyable as something so bad it’s good” are bridged with a lot of boring material. This Evil Dead clone had to have a similar - or maybe even bigger - budget than the 1981 film but it looks 50 times worse.
After his father’s suicide, Cory (Eric Larson) asks his girlfriend Elaine (Francine Lapensée) and his friends (which include Jack Vogel as Stacey, Stephen Quadros as Chuck, Mark David Fritsche as Jack and Sherry Bendorf as Bonnie) to help investigate the family home. While investigating the ruins, they become trapped by a mysterious fog hiding demonic forces.
A group of friends trapped in a cabin in the woods while under attack by demons that proceed to possess them one at a time. The remaining young adults fight off their former friends as their numbers dwindle. It's pretty clear writer/director Charles Philip Moore was heavily influenced by Sam Raimi’s cult classic. You can also tell by the gore. Every demon oozes custard-colored blood like a maple tree come syrup harvest time. The major difference is that there isn’t a second of Demon Wind that’s self-aware and the attempts at humour are few. This movie wants you to be scared but you won’t be. When you laugh, it will be at its expense.
The funniest parts of the film come from a duo of smart-mouthed magicians who aren’t shy about throwing karate kicks. Every scene with them is gold. Too bad Demon Wind kills them off halfway through the movie. Once they’re gone, it’s impossible to remain invested in this story. Why would going back to this burned-out wreck would give Corey any answers about anything? His father lived there for a grand total of FOUR DAYS when he was a baby! Anyone with a brain would’ve taken one look at the crucified skeleton on the front lawn and turned away - I'm not sure if the fact it's been there for sixty years makes it better, or worse. Then again, asking human-like behaviour out of anyone in this film would be too much. The locals are so shifty you can’t not suspect them of being up to something. Elaine does a strip-tease in the middle of the rest-stop restaurant so the movie can throw some cheap titilation in. All of the friends converge on the house despite vague instructions left by Cory on their answering machines. It's a miracle this plot even manages to happen. Once it does, you'll be eager to see it end. You already know how this whole thing will play out.
If you’re looking to pair The Evil Dead with a movie that shows you how right the Bruce Campbell vehicle got it, I’m sure you can find better (worse?) than Demon Wind. You can probably find something funnier too. This movie has a Blu-ray release. I’m baffled as to why. It’s completely unmemorable and barely even a curiosity. If you stumble upon Demon Wind, you can have a few laughs at its expense but it will quickly fade from your memory. (October 8, 2021)

Simon "Ghost" Riley x 141 Reader "Traitor"
"A traitor they called y/n, you remanded silent when y/n was tortured by the love of your life. Simon "Ghost" Riley, he yelled at you, he told y/n he didn't ever love you. The members of the 141 and Laswell listen and felt the same hate as Ghost. Days passed, torture after torture, misery after misery. Y/n remained silent and unmoved; y/n didn't have a reason to fight. The 141 had showed their true self, they didn't hesitate to lock you up and torture y/n, they didn't even look into the source. Y/n didn't really care about the 141 or Laswell, they didn't mean much to y/n. Ever since y/n was little, emotion was not something y/n was good with. Y/n family made sure of it; the only pain y/n felt was the way Simon was treating y/n. You had trusted him, y/n told him everything, and now he is throwing at y/n. Telling y/n you're a monster, a mistake".
Y/n was breathing heavily after the last beating, y/n takes in deep breaths and exhales slowly. Y/n is looking forward at the door, y/n can sense it is almost time.
Sometime pass and the door begin opening, Ghost enter and closes the door, y/n felt something wrong with Ghost.
He takes off his mask and y/n see tears flowing down his face. Y/n doesn't speak or move, y/n waits and waits, Ghost looks at y/n for something, anything. But y/n doesn't feel anything anymore, then the door begins opening again, Ghost slips on his mask quickly.
The rest of the 141 and Laswell walk in, the last to walk in was Colonel Norris.
Captain Price cuts y/n out, y/n stands up and looks at Colonel Norris. He looks at y/n with a sad expression, "I have the things y/n had asked for. Are you really going through with this".
"Yes, I am done", Colonel Norris hands y/n a folder, he then walks out the door. Y/n turns around and hands Price the folder, he opens it and then he drops it suddenly. Everyone looks at him, "you aren't serious, y/n", he looks at y/n with tears in his eyes. "I am done, there is nothing here for me. Best I move on, Philip Graves had offered me a position is his company."
Y/n turns and begins walking to the door, Ghost grabs y/n wrist.
Y/n stops walking, y/n turns your head and looks at Ghost. Y/n can see in his eyes how much pain and sorrow he is in. But y/n doesn’t care, y/n grabs his wrist with y/n other hand. Y/n squeezes his wrist until he lets go of y/n wrist.
Once he let’s go, y/n opens the door and walks out.
To y/n new life and new leader, Philips Graves.

Drake-Norris Expedition
The Drake-Norris expedition of April-July 1589 CE, otherwise known as the Don Antonio Expedition, English Armada or Portugal Expedition, was an unsuccessful attempt by a large English naval and army force to destroy the remaining ships of the Spanish Armada of Philip II of Spain (r. 1556-1598 CE), to reinstate Don Antonio as king of Portugal, and to seize Spanish treasure ships in the Azores. The expedition had a mix of private and state financial backing and was led by Sir Francis Drake (c. 1540-1596 CE) and Sir John Norris (aka Norreys, c. 1547-1597 CE), hence its name. Not all parties agreed to the triple aims of the expedition, Drake and Norris ignored the Armada ships, Elizabeth I of England (r. 1558-1603 CE) was outraged Lisbon had been attacked by land and sea instead, and by the time the English had been beaten off by Spanish forces they were too late to catch the treasure ships. A dismal failure with thousands dead from battle and disease, the English fleet returned home with little to show for their hugely expensive efforts and the Anglo-Spanish war dragged on until 1604 CE.

There was a palpable curiosity in the audience as to who Julius Rodriguez was before the artist and his band took their places behind the Desk. But the crowd was headbanging as soon as the grooves started. The band's energy emanated into the crowd, and it was like we were teleported to a house show with old friends. There weren't many words exchanged throughout this 23-minute set, just hearty laughs and chuckles, juxtaposed by virtuosic playing. "I'm not a big words guy," Rodriguez said towards the end of his performance, "but I will say that being here is such an honor and a dream come true. I'm very glad to have some of my best friends and the greatest musicians in the world with me."

Have you ranked the JA uncles and aunts?
No, but honestly we don't have that many of them and so many of them act as guardians that it's not really comparable.
Pride & Prejudice has the most and they actually act like extended family: Mr. & Mrs. Gardiner, Mr. & Mrs. Philips, and Lady Catherine.
Northanger Abbey: Zero. Other than this mention:
Dress is at all times a frivolous distinction, and excessive solicitude about it often destroys its own aim. Catherine knew all this very well; her great aunt had read her a lecture on the subject only the Christmas before...
Sense & Sensibility: Uncle Dashwood, who sucks and immediately dies. Mr. Pratt is Lucy's uncle and Edward's tutor, but we never meet him. Robert mentions an uncle Sir Robert once.
Mansfield Park: Uncle Sir Thomas, Aunt Bertram and Aunt Norris, though they all play the role of guardian to Fanny so it's not a fair comparison.
Emma: Is she the only heroine who is an aunt? Mr. Knightley is also an uncle. Aunt and Uncle Churchill are talked about a lot but never are on page, guardians to Frank. Miss Bates is aunt to Jane Fairfax.
Persuasion: No, Anne is an aunt too. No other aunts or uncles present. Edit: an anon reminded me that "in Persuasion, Lousia and Henrietta as well as Elizabeth are also Aunts." This is true, along with the younger Musgrove children who are also aunts and uncles, though we never see them interact with their nephews. Which again makes it hard to judge their aunt/uncle-compentence.
That is all of them that I can find. The favourites are probably the Gardiners, least favourite Aunt Norris.

Mary I was really delusional about Elizabeth's paternity. She would tell anybody who would listen that Elizabeth looked like Mark Smeaton, when Elizabeth looked almost like a carbon copy of her father,
I wouldn't say she was delusional, but rather that insisting to herself and others that Elizabeth wasn't really her sister was Mary's way of compartmentalizing.
According to Lancelot de Carles, despite the adultery allegations (might this have been after she was informed that the alleged dates in question began in October 1533? If so, she was far less credulous than Chapuys, who seemed to have used this information to conclude Elizabeth was going to be declared 'the daughter of Norris', the first man accused in the consecutive list of dates, and had to quickly retract this claim), Mary in 1536 actually expressed no doubt whatsoever that Elizabeth was truly her sister:
"'And, since her daughter is the king's, I promise That, to the best of my ability, she should never want for anything.'" The story of the death of Anne Boleyn : a poem by Lancelot de Carle, JoAnn DellaNeva (Translator, Editor, Writer of added commentary)
This was a common refrain for Mary in the 1530s, she told the Duke of Norfolk in 1533, also, something similar:
True, if the King, her father, acknowledged [Elizabeth] as his daughter, just as he called the duke of Richmont his son, she could treat the latter as brother, and her as sister, but in nowise as princess
And later, in her letter to Cromwell in 1536:
concerning the Princess (so, I think, I must call her yet, for I would be loth to offend), I offered at her entry to that name and honor to call her sister, but it was refused unless I would also add the other title unto it; which I denied not then more obstinately than I am now sorry for it, for that I did therein offend my most gracious father and his just laws; and now that you think it meet, I shall never call her by other name than sister."
And then we arrive to the 1550s, which is when Mary was reported to have claimed that Elizabeth was, in fact, not her sister at all (not just by Jane Dormer much later, but by Philip II's confessor at the time). Generally the argument presented for this was that she simply didn't want Elizabeth to be heir due to her religion, but I find that reductive. This was definitely an element, but once it's set into relief and context, I believe she came to claim that Elizabeth wasn't her sister because, if she wasn't her sister, she didn't owe her honour and respect, and thus had no moral imperative or obligation to treat her well.
I really liked Becoming Elizabeth's portrayal of Mary's sibling relationships, but my reaction was not quite the fandom reaction (if you can even call Tumblr that...tbh, it's so small and insular that I almost feel a show doesn't really have a fandom until it's hugely active on Twitter or TikTok, largely because I feel had BE been when the episodes were coming out, it would have been renewed). I don't really get misty-eyed over Mary's relationships with her siblings. She had affection for Edward and Elizabeth, but underneath that affection was always her belief that she was innately superior to them. Granted, I don't believe Mary was like, this merciless bully towards her younger siblings...especially because that belief went both ways (it's clear from his letters and diary entries that Edward VI also believed himself innately superior to Mary, and the subtext of the Micheli report was that not only did Elizabeth not consider herself inferior to Mary, she considered herself superior to her). Tl; dr I'm not sentimental over these relationships, but I find them, in all their dynamics and facets, quite fascinating.
