Redman presents cuts from his latest album, Where Are We, a medication on the complexities of America, featuring new collaborator vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa. In "Chicago Blues," Redman's take on a Count Basie classic, and a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Streets of Philadelphia," Cavassa and Redman dance over the anchoring grooves from bassist Philip Norris and drummer Nazir Ebo, while pianist Paul Cornish delivers a stunning improvised transition between the two songs. For the final selection, Redman opens with an improvisation on "America the Beautiful." The traditional, patriotic tune is a stark contrast to the ugly inspiration for the plaintive "After Minneapolis" that follows, about the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer. The song's growing maelstrom surrounds Redman's haunting wails and Cavassa's mournful interpretation of Redman's lyrics. Throughout, Redman's solos serve to illustrate why he is one of today's best saxophonists.

. A poem needs understanding through the senses. The point of diving in a lake is not immediately to swim to the shore but to be in the lake, to luxuriate in the sensation of water. You do not work the lake out, it is a experience beyond thought. Poetry soothes and emboldens the soul to accept a mystery.

2024 in books: July
This has been a month of excellent book choices, with six out of the nine new-to-me books I finished getting a 5 star rating, plus my latest re-reading the Discworld in publishing order book, Reaper Man, I also rate as 5 star! For once I actually cannot pick out a “if you don’t have time for them all, this is the one to read” book from my reviews but I can offer the following advice: whichever…

Neil Gaiman allegedly sexually assaulted someone while writing The Graveyard Book
Tumblr media
The discussion on Reddit, here.
Podcast transcript, here. Credits for the transcript to Tara O'Shea.
"K" is the pseudonym used by the victim sharing her experience:
Rachel: On the 4th of April, 2007, Neil Gaiman flew K from Los Angeles to Heathrow for a fortnight's holiday together in the UK alone, the two of them. K tells us she was excited to be on this amazing trip with her famous boyfriend and not have to sneak around.
From his messages to her, it seemed like he was too. Neil Gaiman met her on arrival and they then took a taxi to Gatwick Airport to fly to Inverness in Scotland. They visited Loch Ness and stayed at his house on the Isle of Skye for three days. They then flew to Cornwall and drove to Red Ruth in the far south west of England. They stayed in an old tinners cottage with a wood burning stove hidden up a bridal path.
It was advertised as affording complete privacy. He spent the days in Cornwall mostly writing the graveyard book and then they'd occasionally go for walks or drives. She sent us photos from that trip.
Beaches, pubs, cliffs, glens, scarves, the heavy grey skies of the Scottish and Cornish summer. She looks happy. When you see their faces together in the photos, he's unshaven, craggy, she's around 22. She looks so, so young. But she said there were fights. Lots of them.
K: There are a lot of arguments. There is a lot of roughness that I felt compelled to take.
CONTENT WARNING for graphic descriptions of SA
Rachel: What the photos also don't show is K's intimate agony. She told us that on that trip, she had her period and then a bad urinary tract infection.
K: I couldn't sit down. He would say, you know, I want to fool around, like, you know, and I would say, okay, we can fool around, but you can't put anything in my vagina. You just can't because I will die. And it didn't matter. He did it anyway.
Paul: He did it anyway. Although you told him you were in pain.
K: Very specifically said you cannot put anything in me. Please don't. It will hurt very badly and it will make things worse than they already are. Because I know for sure I remember forsure in Cornwall saying those words out loud. It wasn't just a discussion about like that hurts.
Like because I can't remember if I said that hurts. Don't do it or like please stop. I can't remember those other instances. I know we discussed it. I know it was a big part of why he would get upset at me and I knew that it was like something that I had to do to keep him around. Like it was expected of me, but in Cornwall, I remember because of that UTI and it was so painful that like I couldn't do anything. Like I couldn't enjoy the fact that I was in or like I was just in like screaming agony and I know I said it out loud then.
Rachel: On the 16th of April 2007, Neil Gaiman drove K to Heathrow for her flight back to Los Angeles. She says they stopped several times along the way so she could pee because of her UTI. She says it felt more painful because of the penetrative sex he allegedly performed on her without her consent. As to this specific allegation, Neil Gaiman's clear position is that it is false and again he denies any unlawful behaviour with her. He didn't respond to any other specific points or questions about this trip.
From episode 4 of the Tortoise podcast series.

I fucking love the tf2 comics because you get shenanigans such as:
Amelia Earhart died in a hot dog costume
The Mayor of tuefort doesn't actually know what a mayor can and can't do
The mayor of tuefort forced a man to pretend to be an italian stereotype for literally years
Saxton Hale blows up the moon
Spy might have helped a child murder the santa guy from that one smissmass comic, or it was spy disguised, it's not totally clear to be perfectly honest
merasmus takes 'kill me come back stronger' pills, which soldier also takes because he thinks its heart medication
merasmus is gender fluid, depending on how you read it
merasmus in indebted to like all the mafias
australians canonically all grow australia-shaped chest hair, and are the way they are because of a golden material called australium
spy has miniature cornish hens in his teeth, as well as the rest of the makings of one of those tiny, several-course, meals
soldier just loves fighting things naked, while covered in honey. canonically-speaking, he does this all the damn time
zhanna is racist against french people
demoman is married to his liver
demoman's eye socket is haunted
soldier has little raccoon children, lieutenant bites i think was one of their names
the pregnancy machine thing
also, the baboon uterus thing
heavy's sisters are into spy and sniper, which i can't say i disagree with. good lord.
BUT THERE'S ALSO THINGS LIKE THIS:
Scout and Sniper go out to get tacos after a bad interaction with an enemy spy
saxton is so deeply divorced with maggie
miss pauling is a lesbian, if a leak of the final issue's script on 4chan is to be believed
RED demo and BLU soldier become friends outside of work but the administrator finds out so they have to kill each other and ;-;
Heavy has a family and he risks his life to feed them and he loves them so much just GAH
these people have been fighting for generations over something that's literally worthless and i think if you think more about it there's an actually really applicable theme about that to real life
the mayor of tuefort forced this just random guy to pretend to be an italian stereotype for so long that he forgot how he used to speak. he forgot who he used to be almost entirely. do you understand. in another world there is a psychological horror about this guy's life exclusively
maggie works for her ex-husband's nemesis and it's honestly not explained why but she's also clearly ashamed or sad about it
spy being scout's dad and it's a whole thing and THOSE FOUR EMOTIONALLY DEVASTATING PANELS
sniper's bio parents are cowards and fools and don't much like him and there's a whole realization that he wasn't actually australian and it puts together a lot of puzzle pieces for him,
and then later he meets his parents-- the ones he grew up with-- in heaven after dying and being brought back to life and he gets told that hes a professional and its this payoff from the meet the sniper video
"you're getting very good at saying horrible things to dying men, miss pauling"
spy is nearly murdered by classic!sniper and he looks genuinely scared
heavy and medic are in love. do you understand.

You know what? No.
There's something about this season that I thought at the start but writ off as a conspiracy theory. After the latest episode, and the pure rage I feel?
Nope. It's gotta be true.
The Great British Bake Off is trying to get another scandal so people will talk about it's episodes.
GBBO as a series has always been one of emotions. Joy, fear when you're favourite is in danger and sadness when they leave, but mostly warm fuzzy feelings.
Twice this season at least I and several others have been left feeling enraged and injustice at what occurs in the tent. From Abbi leaving when Dan served RAW, CARDBOARD LIKE DOUGH, to this weeks departure.
Remember: one of the big things they hyped up in the Episode 2 teaser was biscuitgate, which turned out to not be a big deal - they swapped back and it was fine. Abbi would leave the next episode despite the injustice mentioned above. Tasha would then fall ill a couple episodes later - I do not believe this was planned and genuinely believe the conditions in the tent were so appalling that they let her get to that state. That alone sickens me.
And then you have puddinggate this week. Everyone has been crying for weeks that the technicals needed more time, and this week is just the climax of it. Raw pudding that the judges refuse to eat, and will refuse to fix for next week and beyond.
You know what I predict?
The finale will occur. And the winner will be someone nobody expected, because someone else will do really well in the finale and make it seem like they'll win -
only for someone else to.
That way, people will talk about the show. Because it's no secret that less people are watching and reviews are dropping. But scandals? Scandals are publicity. Make the show seem interesting. Make it seem more marketable to those who watch reality TV like Love Island, I guess.
And sure, typing this out now, it still seems like a conspiracy theory. That I'm being silly and that it's just a baking show, so why should I care?
Because I've loved this show for years. When it's good, it's really good! It's known for being wholesome, and showing how good the British public can be during a time when you absolutely hate them (which is... all the time when you're Cornish and hate tourism) as the bakers help eachother out.
But you don't get that anymore. It's soulless.
And like Paul Hollywood himself would say:
"It lacks direction."
