Watched the 1925 and 2004 adaptations this weekend. Loved '25, the most uncomfortable Erik to me so far. And his mask is really unsettling. Probably because of the absence of his mouth and weird eyes? He is kinda funny without the mask though :D But oh, Christine in this movie is gorgeous!! And 2004 version.. it's just..okay imo. Just not my favourite. The music is great, but it's just repetition of the musical (don't go after me please)
And have more Cherik ofc

The thing I love about being in the POTO fandom is that I could take a photo of a random skeleton outside of a cottage in summer with flowers growing on its skull, and someone in the tags will add:
”I’m so glad Erik decided to make himself a flower crown, the poor man needs it.”
and I love us for that.

On this new episode of Phantom Ramblings (jokes aside I might actually start to call these as such) I’ll yap about Poto 1925.
I really enjoyed it, the music is sooo good (wasn’t expecting it) and the sets are really beautiful. I was afraid of not liking it because it was a silent movie, but I was wrong.
The actors did a great job, Lon Chaney is a fantastic phantom! I loved how he acted with his whole body and hands, really similar vibes to Leroux!Erik, pretty creepy too. How they did his deformity was perfect, really liked it and the unmasking is great, I like how aggressive he is (not like the novel, but close). Now… His backstory: basically inexistent… He HAD ESCAPED AN ASYLUM! I HATE THAT DETAIL! “Oh, you see this mad brute? He was confined in an asylum for the criminals.” Come on… Shitty backstory… They don’t want us to sympathise with him, so they have cut every info about his life. I really like the mask design, btw.
I’m mad that they whitewashed The Persian (here he is Ledoux), come on! Another really annoying thing is how he doesn’t have any backstory with Erik, ffs… He has been investigating him only for a couple of MONTHS, their relationship is completely absent. At least he exists… I guess…
I really like how close this movie is to the novel, the torture chamber, the death of Philippe, the siren (and actually showing her), the SCORPION AND THE GRASSHOPPER. Really great stuff, but they OBVIOUSLY HAD TO RUIN THE ENDING! Now… I know that it was 1925 and Hollywood (not only) hated having characters that aren’t either completely good or completely bad… What makes Erik’s character really compelling is his redemption, how he was not fully evil… How constant shunning and prejudice from society made him a monster… How, as Leroux himself wrote, if he didn’t look like that he would have been one of the fairest souls and how Erik just wanted to be an ordinary person living a normal life, the novel makes us sympathise with him… Here he is just a deformed madman who killed people, so he gets what he “deserves” and gets beaten to death and thrown into the river by a mob… I really hated the mob chasing him… This ending made me sad ngl…
This ending also makes me think about The penalty (1920) (another movie with Lon Chaney as villain) in which he isn’t truly evil, but a FUCKING CONCUSSION made him like that so the doctor’s brain operation made him good again… The same fucking doctor that cut Blizzard’s legs (Lon Chaney) when it wasn’t needed (ruining the life of a 16 y.o. that was then abandoned by his parents and started living in the streets), because GOD FORBID WE SHUN MEDICAL MALPRACTICE and SHOW HOW THE BAD GUY HAS AN ACTUAL REASON FOR BEING BAD.
I saw someone in the comments of the movie saying that they were glad Christine was actually afraid of the phantom and how the relationship isn’t romanticised, but still having a part that loved him, etc… The thing is… There’s no concept of pity nor love here… She is just afraid (which is understandable)… This ending just feels like an oversimplification and “playing it safe” for both of them. In the novel Christine is the one that wants to sing for Erik before disappearing, here she just wants to go away…
Bye :)
I’ll try to draw his lovely mug and his mask :)

More Erik The Phantom Headcanons!
these are all autistic hcs since @madreemeritus asked for more, i am happy to deliver on more of one of my favorites boys!
let's start off strong with this mans EGO, alot of autistic people are kind of full of ourselves lol this man is always boasting how articulate and amazing he is and how better he is at everything than you (example: playing the organ)
2. he has the opposite of sensory overload this man has sensory UNDERLOAD he will nearly go deaf with all the loud music cheering and clapping going on in the opera, he loves loves loves the sounds.
3. nervously picks and bites at his skin around his nails, he gets very understimulated and needs some type of sensory outpit, so picking it is! (me too)
4. one word. Dysgraphia. This man's handwriting is SHIT (again me too)
5. hygiene is not that great... his breath prob smells like straight up cyanide and ass, anyways hygiene is something all autistic people deal with in one way or another, like we forget to brush our teeth or purposely don't because it feels horrendous.
6. stimming! stimming! stimming! he definitely does this especially at points where Christine holds his hand ever so gently, or how she hits the most perfect high note on stage. he can't help but jump a little, or alot lol
7. he occasionally deals with echolalia, when Christine tells him "i love you Erik" he will get giddy and repeat it 10 times over, not just for reassurance but because it makes him so happy, "Christine loves Erik!"
8. he may not deal with sound sensitivity but textures are def a big NO. he must only wear silks and soft materials, he will complain of a thousand prickles on his skin if you make him wear such cheap and horrible textures.
9. again with the textures is food, i feel like since the acid hit his mouth his teeth must have been affected making them weaker. he tends to eat much softer foods, like puddings, soups.
10. thought about this last one alot and I think he might have light sensitivity as well, since he only uses candles to light his dark bedroom, and likes to keep the lights off in his private box. His eyes were badly injures, leaving them extremely sensitive to light.
thanks for requesting more phantom headcanons! i got a bit more technical with these ones compared to my last post because i thought i could also make this somewhat educating for people who might not know certain things about us autistic individuals. anyways tell me what you think and don't be afraid to add some of your own interpretations or headcanons of autistic Erik!

A Gentleman's Proposal
Read on AO3
Summary: Weeks have passed since Inspector Ledoux and Raoul de Chagny were imprisoned in Erik's torture chamber, and Ledoux can't forget what he and the young vicomte experienced together that night. However, he knows he must forget their encounter - if only he can figure out a way to do so. And later, as summer turns to fall, Erik and Christine have a revealing conversation - one that might help the connection slowly growing between the two of them. Daroga/Raoul, Erik/Christine, rated M

So I was watching 1925 Phantom again recently and I was once again struck by the absolute downgrade we’ve experienced when it comes to Erik’s deformity.
You’re telling me that in 1925, Lon Chaney managed to turn himself into THAT thanks to nothing more than a book description, a roll of wire and some imagination
But cut to 79 years later, what feels like a thousand different Phantom adaptations to reference and incredible advancements in both practical and digital effects and we decide that all Gerard Butler needs to become the Phantom is a half-hearted attempt at a sunburn and an allergic reaction?
HOW HAVE WE DOWNGRADED
Curse you society and your need to force hotness upon everything :(((
(No hate to any of the makeup artists or production people btw. They’re just tryna do what’s asked of them :) )

Stop! I had no idea it was Phantom's birthday!!! Your reblog made me gasp. Do you have a favourite adaptation????? 🤌❤️
Great question, @french-vanilla-in-the-clouds! I haven't seen too many of the film adaptations, like the Chinese "Song at Midnight" or its remake, or The Phantom Lover. I would like to thank the YouTube channel, Phantom Reviews, for introducing me to the other adaptations of Phantom. Here's a list of my personal favorite POTO adaptations:
The Phantom of the Opera (1925-1929)
This was actually the first silent film I ever watched as a kid, I was around 9 or 10 years old and it was also around the same time that the Andrew Lloyd Webber movie was coming out. I love Lon Chaney's performance as Erik, and his ability as a makeup artist as well. This holds a special place in my heart, because I remember watching it at my grandmother's house. I hope someone can make a proper adaptation of the book with today's technology; however, this is probably the closest one we have so far.
(look at the way he clenches his fist on his sleeve, A.M.A.Z.I.N.G!)
The Phantom of the Opera (2004)
I remember liking this more as a kid and a teen, this has become more of a guilty pleasure movie for me now as an adult. I do appreciate some of the costume designs, I think my favorite is a tie between Christine's masquerade dress and her Think of Me dress. Minnie Driver is always fun to watch as La Carlotta, and Patrick Wilson did his best as Raoul. If it were made today with Emmy Rossum's acting abilities from being on Shameless, I think it could've worked beautifully, I'll give her some leeway because she was a teenager then.
(This is my favorite shot of Erik, btw)
The Phantom of the Opera (1990)
Btw, this was actually my first introduction to Charles Dance before Game of Thrones. I know this is technically also an adaptation of another musical prior to Lloyd Webber's, Yeston and Kopit; regardless, I like how this version of Erik is more on the sweet side, but he does have his limits (and I love his sarcastic remarks about Carlotta lol). I wish we could have seen what his disfigurement looked like, however, I do appreciate how the filmmakers wanted the audience to imagine it for themselves.
Goosebumps' The Phantom of the Auditorium (1995)
Okay, so I haven't actually read any of the Goosebumps books. I liked watching the TV show a bit more. This episode was a fun, kid-friendly version of Phantom.
(excuse the crappy quality of the photo)
Phantom of the Paradise (1974)
Okay, this one is a lot of fun. I do like how it was more rock and roll, and I like this Phantom's design, it almost reminds me of Panna a Nevtor, or the Czechoslovak Beauty and the Beast movie. There's definitely some campiness to the film as well, especially with Beef (the La Carlotta counterpoint), and Winslow's court case scene.
Phantom of the Megaplex (2000)
I have a soft spot for this one, because it was the first time where I saw clips of the Lon Chaney film featured in the beginning. On paper, I do like the premise of a guy haunting a movie theater, and I do like some of the more "Phantom" moments where he's disrupting each theater with something, like the projector bubbling out, or the dinosaur balloon. Also, I do like Mickey Rooney's speech about movies and movie-going.

I wish to God that the original ending of Phantom of the Opera 1925 could be viewed. I hope someone finds the film reels in a warehouse or a box or a drawer or something, because I DESPERATELY want to see it. If they managed to restore it it would officially be the most book accurate adaptation of Phantom (I think it might be anyways but just. Extra points)
#also Lon Chaney Sr deserves to have that added to his legacy#mans pioneered the realm of Hollywood makeup and he put his heart and soul into every film#lon chaney#lon chaney sr#phantom of the opera#phantom of the opera 1925#erik phantom

I got to see the 1925 Phantom of the Opera in a theater with live music tonight, and it was amazing, except the audience... Well. Can't say I understand buying tickets to a showing of a silent film that's almost a century old just to spend half your time laughing at it for being a silent film that's almost a century old.
Tanith Lee gets my vibe here.
