Cryptid File - 4
The Flatwoods Monster
The Flatwoods monster (also known as the Braxton County monster, Braxie, or the Phantom of Flatwoods), is an entity reported to have been sighted in the town of Flatwoods in Braxton County, West Virginia, USA, on September 12, 1952, after a bright object crossed the night sky. The creature was described as having a large pointed "hood-like shape" around the face, eye-like shapes which emitted greenish-orange light, and a dark black or green body. May described the figure as having "small, claw-like hands", clothing-like folds, and "a head that resembled the ace of spades". The creature was said to be approximately 10ft. According to the story, when the figure made a hissing sound and started "gliding" towards the eyewitnesses they fled the area in terror. Some investigators have stated that they believe the light was a meteor and the creature was a barn owl perched in a tree, with shadows making it appear to be a large humanoid. Although many are skeptical of this theory, and the seeming implausibility of multiple different people mistaking a barn owl(which averages at 25cm from head to toe) for a 10 foot hovering entity that hissed and had glowing eyes. The monster seemingly disappeared, but it is still said you can hear the monster hissing in the dead of night in the back woods of West Virginia.

Cryptic Signal (Psychic / Electric)
- "This Pokemon is said to constantly broadcast an indecipherable signal, driving those who listen to it mad. The only sightings were recorded in a paranormal magazine." Cryptic Machine (Steel / Fire)
- "A towering machine said to scorch the land with some kind of burning beam, according to a panicked tale written in a paranormal magazine. Cryptic Phantom (Poison / Fairy type)
- "Stories say this Pokemon haunts the darkened wood, cloaked in a cloud of noxious gas. An article in a certain paranormal magazine is the only written record of this entity." Cryptic Bloom (Steel / Electric)
- "An odd machine built to absorb sunlight and turn it into incredible energy. One paranormal magazine debated if such a device was built to help or destroy." Cryptic Effigy (Rock)
- "It is said that this Pokemon mimics the form of a human to lure in prey, before taking them away to parts unknown. An article in a paranormal magazine was written by one who claims to have been abducted by one." Cryptic Omen (Ghost / Flying)
- "A shadowy creature that is said to appear wherever disaster will strike, with no telling if it only predicts these events or causes them. Eyewitness accounts of this strange entity can be found in a certain paranormal magazine." --------------------------------------------
Haven't played a pokemon game since Soulsilver long long ago, but I do always look forward to a new generation to see what designs and beasts they come up with. With the release of Scarlet and Violet, I got talking to my friend @james-silvercat about the new dex, and eventually our conversation wound up on the paradox pokemon. There is certainly a cool concept there, but when looking at the future paradox pokemon, we found them to be quite lacking. Nothing but robot clones with barely any changes to the overall look or design. Blah! Of course, this led to us discussing what we would do with such a concept, which inevitably led to us coming up with our own ideas of what future paradox pokemon could be. The brainstorming was so fun, I couldn't help but draw some up!
What we got here (from top, left to right) is an Eiscue based on the Old Saybrook Blockheads, a Ferrothorn based on the War of the World Tripods, a Gardevoir based on the Flatwoods Monster, a Sunflora that is mainly just a robot but came to be thinking about the Dade City Flowers (which were also robot flowers), a Cacturne being the Pascagoula Alien and a Noctowl based on the Mothman.

Before I officially start work on Power Rangers Supernova (title, yay!) here’s the (mostly) major villain names too:
Don Armage: Karna Rog (Don Armage is an anagram of Armageddon (missing a d but still) while Karna Rog is an anagram of Ragnarok)
Kukuruga: Mirfak (the brightest star in Perseus, which is what Kukuruga is partially based on)
Akyanba: Schedar (the brightest star in Cassiopeia, which is what she’s partially based on)
Tecchu: Alderamin (the brightest star in Cepheus, which is what I think he’s partially based on)
Scorpio: Eurypto Calchas (Later Antares) (Eurypto is meant to bring to mind Eurypterid, prehistoric sea scorpions, while Calchas is a genus of scorpion. Antares is the brightest star in Scorpius)
Eriedron: Kaus (brightest star in Sagittarius, which is what he’s partially based on)
Ikagen: Skragen (Skull+Kraken, as he’s based on the Kraken and crystal skulls)
Madakko: Calamartia (Calamari+Martian+Marsha since she’s based on octopus-like Martians)
Geth Indaver: Cassius Bodmin (Later Felis) (Cassius is the one who orchestrated the assassination of Caesar, which fits his role in the adaptation in a way. Bodmin is a reference to Bodmin Moor, a location known for the Beast of Bodmin Moor, a Phantom Cat, and Geth Indaver is partially based on Phantom Cats. Felis is the name of a no longer existing constellation, as well as a star that’s part of the Hydra constellation)
Don Aslan: Ankaa (not explaining since it’s massive spoilers for the end of the first season of the adaptation)
Indaver: Greyder (Portmanteau of Grey (aliens that they’re based on), invader, and raider)
Tsuyoindaver: Flatborg (Named after the Flatwoods monster, which they’re based on, and cyborg, since they’re mechanically enhanced Indavers) (As an aside I’m not naming all of the Daikaan which are just modified Tsuyoindaver costumes aside from Ommo Indaver because that would be absolutely miserable)
