The Sonic movies have gotten me curious about the game lore, but I’ve never played a sonic game since they aren’t really the type of games I’m normally into gameplay wise so idk

oh thats great!! the struggle is real, ive chosen to learn about lots of games instead of playing them, Sonic and otherwise. luckily for you, there's three great ways to do just that:

Watch cutscene compilations on YouTube! So many people do this that there's lots to choose from nowadays. In some games the characters have important (or at least flavorful) dialogue during gameplay, so if you see it, don’t skip past it. Most of these videos are an hour long, so get some food and make it a movie night!

Read Sonic News Network and Sonic Retro! These are by far the most expansive Sonic resources on the internet. I'd say the former site is more helpful than the latter in terms of Lore, though there's a few exceptions I'll explain further below. Anyway, I suggest starting with SNN's page on the series as a whole, to get a feel of how the games' universe "works". At the bottom, there's a collapsed widget reading "Navigation templates to Sonic the Hedgehog series". The first two lists in there contain nearly every lore-important game: read those in order, and you should be set!

Read the Encyclo-speed-ia! Okay, I only recommend this one if you find the Wiki format distracting and have at least $50 to spare. It’s got some minor lore goofs, but it gives precise, yet detailed summaries of all the plots that require such. I own a copy, but it came out less than six months ago so I won’t be making or sharing a full scan. I can, however, transcribe certain sections and DM them to you if you ask nicely enough

here's some extra tips that I wish I'd known starting out, feel free to ignore them if you’re here for a good time and not a long one:

Almost all the games “happened” in a single timeline that matches their order of release. The few exceptions are Mania (which takes place in the Classic era) and some next-door neighbors that can be swapped around without changing much. No Zelda-style clownery here!

Some games are non-canon for various reasons. These include being alternate takes of canon games (8-bit Sonic 1 and 2), Sega declaring them so and reintroducing its characters later (Knuckles’ Chaotix), being developed by different studios and borrowing from other canons (Spinball, Chronicles). Feel free to skip them... or look into them anyway, because they’re still interesting in their own right!

Like many Japanese franchises this old, the older games were subject to regional rewrites and honest mistranslations. When in doubt, assume the Japanese script or text is the canon one. This comes into play the most in two areas:

The Classic Era Quadrilogy (1, 2, CD, 3 & Knuckles). Since elaborate cutscenes weren’t possible yet, the specifics of these games’ plots were written in their manuals. These were changed for Western audiences, but the Japanese ones can be read in English on Sonic Retro. Click on their titles at the start of this bullet point, then scroll down a bit!

Sonic Adventure 2. This game has possibly the most nuanced script and lore of them all, but it came out when game dubs were still often sub-par. If there’s any one Sonic game to watch subbed, it’s this one. If you go the YouTube route, look up “sonic adventure 2 retranslated cutscenes” and you should be good.

Don’t neglect the handheld and spinoff games! They’re on separate lists in that SNN widget, but more of them are canon than meets the eye! The ones with the most impact are the Advance trilogy, Battle, and the Rush duology in vaguely that order. There’s also the first two Riders games (the third one doesn’t introduce much lore) and the Storybook Series, which are self-contained but beloved studies of Sonic as a character.

In the series' first 15 years, every mainline game’s story was somewhat connected and built meaningfully upon the last. After the low reception of games like Shadow the Hedgehog (2005) and Sonic ‘06, this kind of storytelling was scaled back in Unleashed, then dropped altogether by Colors. The games that have come out since then have been standalone adventures without much lore between them. I’m not saying they’re not worth checking out, I just want to explain what happened since you might notice the change while reading/watching.

Hey, I really love your series! I’ve always thought about making a webcomic adaptation of a game like you’re doing, but it always seemed like so much work. Do you have any tips or advice on making comics?

Hey there! Glad you're enjoying the series!

As for my advice, here is what I can offer from my experience with working on Trauma Center and my own comics:

Before you start drawing pages, script out the story. I can't stress this enough but having a written script has been a life saver for me. Helps with keeping things on track and gives a rough idea how long chapters are gonna be. (And the story as a whole)

It's okay to make adjustments as you go. Sometimes when something was written awhile back you might not have considered a possible scenario. So if something new comes to mind that might work better and doesn't break anything then give it a shot. If you compared some of the recent chapters of Trauma Center to the original script it would be noted they look nothing alike. (This is abundantly clear with later chapters.)

Thumbnailing (The process of making quick little rough sketches) is a beautiful thing. Saves you from making more pages than you need to and helps you figure out pacing with quick drawings rather than sketching out whole pages then finding out maybe you made too little or too much. (Also helps with formatting)

Have a friend or group of friends who can act as editors/beta readers. It's always good to get feedback to make sure a story is making sense and to check pacing. (And checking for typos. Though be warned sometimes even after three people, typos can still sneak past. I speak from experience and I often scream internally when I realize there's still a typo.)

As an addition to the editor/beta reader thing that's exclusive to Trauma Center, it was good to have a beta reader that wasn't familiar with the source material. I wanted the manga to be friendly to both fans of the game and people who have never played. I never wanted playing the game to be a requirement to enjoy the manga. So, it's a good way to check.

The last bit of advice I can offer, and this specifically in regards to adapting a game into a manga, don't be afraid to make some changes. With any adaptation, it's okay to take some liberties. Gameplay mechanics in particular have to be slightly ignored since it won't make sense in story. (For example: Don't know if anyone has noticed, but we don't bring up the stabilizer even once in the manga. We threw it out entirely.) Important thing is to keep the main story beats and character arcs intact. If you want to expand on something the game didn't? Go for it! Want to shine some more light on a character? Do it! Want to add some extra characters to make the world feel more lived in? Go nuts! (I did all three of these things.) Bottom line, don't feel like you need to do a 1 for 1 adaptation. It's actually pretty limiting if you do it that way.

And that's all I can think of besides the general advice of studying other manga adaptions of games to see how others handled it, studying comics in general so you can figure out how to format your own, and so on.

Though one last thing I will mention quickly. Be prepared for the work load cause yeah, it is a lot of work to make something like this happen. Comics/mangas take a lot of time and it can be intimidating. But the important thing is to pace yourself and well... don't stress too much about it. Have fun with it and take all the time you need to get it done. Just be patient with yourself and if you need a break, you need a break. Your project will be there when you're ready to start work again.

So of all the scrapped spaceworld designs, which one would you most wish could have been included in the final game?

Literally think this might’ve been one of my favorite Pokes if it actually released. There’s just something about the way-too-happy expression, creepy/cute combo, and cool concept and design that just hits all of my buttons. Plus it has a unique evolution mechanic and many people have said they’d like to see it after it was leaked, so it would find a fanbase easily. (It’s also easy to figure out how it would integrate into stuff like the anime. Seems like the kind of Pokemon Team Rocket would accidentally get stuck with for an episode or something.)

Other than that, I also really like beta Girafarig. Canon Girafarig isn’t terrible, but it just feels like a watered down version of the original concept. Specially I’d really like to see it as an evolution, as Girafarig always came across as more of a baby giraffe than a full-grown one, and it makes sense for it to start out with one underdeveloped head that then turns into a second body upon evolution.

I think the inmates are a positive influence on him.  Guess jail time did him some good after all.

with the help of my now-girlfriend @pewycert, who is a walking neopets encyclopedia and history book (TNT should hire her as loremaster and that is NOT a joke i am NOT exaggerating i genuinely firmly believe she should be the loremaster. TNT if you see this pls dm her) - she basically handed me Cellia's backstory on a silver platter so i'm not responsible for thinking of this but;

basically, in "the old world" (as i like to imagine Fyora would refer to it) when Tyrannia was actively being encased in ice, Cellia was one of the first to receive that punishment due to her...... unconventional appetite.

She was the last to be freed from her permaice caverns - where, fun fact, she was dreamily aware of the ages passing by, and could see the Negg faerie from where she was frozen, hence the random crush I gave her on Kari.

But, Cellia never forgot Fyora's betrayal...

(click/tap for quality) - also, in drawing this i realized that Man my faerie girl is Wayyy too detailed to match the neopets style. so i beefed up Fyora's design to match hers, and i wanna make a downgraded / source-accurate version of Cellia to match owo

i cant guarantee that Fyora wouldn't try to imprison her again instantly 😂 she seems like the type to automatically revoke hope for this faerie. but she's right, though. Cellia does not understand why her way of eating is so repulsive, and it's not like she hates neopets - FARRR from it! she just thinks theyre suuuper tasty is all 😅 but, suffice to say, she's so simple-minded that she is Not the type to be 'rehabilitated' (as Fyora puts it in reference to Xandra...)

this piece more shows how Cellia feels about Fyora than anything that would actually happen lol - in reality I think she would be terrified of her and do anything - ANYTHING - to hide from her. besides, i wanted to draw Cellia properly gremlinning out 😂😂
