day 14 of horror mythology: peuchen
el peuchen is a creature from the mapuche mythology and chilote mythology pertaining to southern chile, a much feared shapeshifting creature that can instantly change into animal form. according to legend, el peuchen takes the hearts of its victims without leaving a mark on the body. its gaze could paralyze an intended victim and permit it to suck its blood. it has often been reported as the cause of blood being sucked from one's sheep.

A History of Vampires
Vampy vampy vampires! I’m not talking about Twilight; today I want to make a post talking about the real cultural significance of vampires in different folk beliefs around the world.
Tumblr media
What Is A Vampire?
“...a mythical creature that subsists by feeding on the vital essence (generally in the form of blood) of the living.”
- Good ol’ Wikipedia
When we think of vampires, we picture Dracula in his brooding cloak sucking the life out of others. We see those characteristic fangs, an aversion to garlic, and a fatal vulnerability to sunlight.
Vampiric creatures have been noted in cultures around the world for generations.
A History of “Vampires” (Popularized in the West)
Cultures such as the Mesopotamians, Ancient Greeks, and Manipuri have folk tales of entities that are now considered to be precursors to modern-day vampires. Despite such occurrences of vampiric creatures in these ancient civilizations, the folklore for what most consider vampires today comes almost exclusively from early 18-thcentury Southeastern Europe.
The term “vampire” itself was popularized in Western Europe after reports of mass hysteria during the 18th-century. Said hysteria originated from a pre-existing folk belief in Southeastern and Eastern Europe that in some cases ended in corpses being staked, and some people were even persecuted under the accusation of vampirism.
Tumblr media
Early folk beliefs in vampires has typically been summed up to pre-existing ignorance of how the body would decompose after death, with people attempting to explain such decay through the existence of vampires.
The more personable and charismatic version of the vampire, born in fiction, came in 1819 with the publication of The Vampyre by John Polidori. Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula in 1897 would later on provide the basis of the modern vampire legend and be remembered as the most significant vampire novel in literature. However, it is worth noting that Stoker’s novel came after the publication of the 1872 novel Carmilla, published by Irish author Sheridan Le Fanu.
Folk Beliefs
In Slavic and Chinese folk traditions, any corpse that was jumped over by an animal (especially a dog or cat) was feared to become a “vampire”. There was also believed to be a risk with a body having any wound that wasn’t treated with boiling water.
In Russian folklore, vampires were said to have been witches or people who had rebelled against the Russian Orthodox Church while alive.
Within Jewish traditions, “alukah” is synonymous with vampires. The creature is said to be a living human being, but can change into a wolf. It also has the ability to fly by releasing its long hair, and would eventually die if not allowed to feed on blood for an extended amount of time. Once dead, a vampire could be prevented from becoming a demon by being buried with its mouth stuffed with soil.
Tumblr media
Albanian mythology discusses both the “shtriga” and the “dhampir”. Shtriga is a vampiric witch that sucks blood from infants while they sleep at night, then turning into a flying insect. Only a shtriga could cure those she drained blood from. A cross made of pig bone could be placed at the entrance of a church on Easter Sunday, which would render any shtriga inside unable to leave. Then, they could be captured and killed.
The Ashanti people in West Africa have folk tales of the iron-toothed and tree-dwelling “asanbosam” which can take the form of a firefly and hunts for children for their blood.
The Betsileo people of Madagascar have stories of “ramanga”, a vampire who drinks the blood and eats the nail clippings of nobles.
The Mapuche of southern Chile have stories of a bloodsucking snake known as “Peuchen”, with aloe vera being hung backwards behind or near a door to ward off vampiric entities across a variety of South American superstition.
Aztec mythology has folk tales of the Cihuateteo, which are skeletal-faced spirits of humans who died in childbirth. These entities were said to steal children, and entered into sexual liaisons with the living, which would drive them to insanity.

Tumblr media
The alleged “Vampyrum spectrum.”

Locals inspect dead llamas and alpacas.
Tumblr media
Alleged “Infant vampire doll.”

RMS TITANIC
LIFEBOAT 6
Lifeboat 6 was one of Titanic's port side lifeboats, located at the forward end of the ship. It is well known for being the lifeboat in which Margaret “Molly” Brown was rescued in. The boat is usually stated to have been the first boat to leave the port side of the ship, and it is included as such in the lifeboat launching sequence noted at being launched at 12:40 A.M, just a few minutes before lifeboat 3.
Second Officer Lightoller ordered Quartermaster Robert Hichens to command the boat and also ordered Lookout Frederick Fleet to get in. While the boat was being lowered, Robert Hichens is said to have called out; “I cannot manage this boat with only one seaman", resulting in Lightoller halting the lowering to find another seaman; with no other crew member appearing to be free, a First Class passenger, Major Arthur Peuchen, offered to go to help. After Major Peuchen stated that he was a yachtsman, Charles Lightoller agreed to let him go as long as he was “sailor enough” to climb down the falls and into the boat. As Major Peuchen landed in the boat, his wallet fell out of his pocket and landed in the sea. His wallet was eventually found and recovered from the wreck site in 1987.
The passengers aboard the boat were mostly First Class woman; there was also a male passenger that Frederick Fleet and Major Peuchen said was a “stowaway”, who had hidden in the boat and only appeared after the boat started to move away from the ship; although Helen Candee said that in fact he was ordered in by Captain Smith after the captain had been told that they had no seamen in the boat. As he had a broken arm or wrist, he was unable to row.
Titanic lifeboat 8
Lifeboat 6 and the empty lifeboat 4
Despite the fact it was designed to hold 65 people, in total there were only 23 people aboard as the boat pulled away from the ship.
Some of the other passengers aboard lifeboat 6 were critical of Robert Hichens' behavior in the boat, in their opinions, accusing him of refusing to help with the rowing, having a rude and negative attitude, and refusing to return to help those in the water.
Some of the women aboard the boat, including and encouraged by Molly Brown, who said that she was only in lifeboat 6 after a crew member suddenly grabbed her and dropped her 4 feet into the already lowering boat, helped with the rowing.
During the night, after the sinking, lifeboat 6 come alongside and lashed together to lifeboat 16. The two lifeboats drifted until Molly Brown decided that they should separate so that they could start rowing again to keep warm. When Robert Hichens tried to stop them, Molly Brown threatened to throw him overboard. To help with the rowing a fireman from lifeboat 16 was transferred to lifeboat 6.
All aboard Lifeboat 6 were rescued by Carpathia at around 6 A.M. in the morning. Lifeboat 6 is often featured more than any of the other boats in many of the films and documentaries that have been made about Titanic. Special attention is often given to Molly Brown, who became well known for her actions in the boat.

When Oranges Are Better Than Wealth
When the Titanic went down in 1912, eleven millionaires went down with it. They had an estimated $200,000,000 in wealth. On this night, their money would become worthless to them. Major A. H. Peuchen was also a very wealthy man. In fact, in his room on the Titanic, he was storing an estimated $300,000 worth […] https://www.abiblecommentary.com/blog/2024/07/03/when-oranges-are-better-than-wealth/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=tumblr

Your 'most important' thing
Word for Today written by Bob and Debby Gass
Tuesday 20th February 2024
'The most important thing is that I complete my mission.' Acts 20:24 NCV
The story is told of Major Arthur Godfrey Peuchen, a wealthy Canadian man who survived the Titanic. After it struck the iceberg, he returned to his stateroom and, ignoring cash and possessions worth around $300,000, grabbed a favourite pearl pin and three oranges. Later, he was reported to have said, 'The money seemed to be a mere mockery at that time.' Circumstances transformed his values; tragedy clarified his priorities. The question is not will your calendar be full, but who will fill it and what will it be filled with? If you're wise, you will consult God as to your life's priorities, then keep them before you at all times (see Proverbs 3:6).
In a survey, people over 90 were asked, 'If you had your life to live over, what would you do differently?' Three answers constantly emerged: (1) I would spend more time with my family and friends. (2) I would try more things and take more risks. (3) I would give myself to something that would live on after I'm gone. Petty things steal too much of our time, and we finish up living by the wrong priorities. If you say yes to every request, you will never get around to doing what God has called you to do.
Paul had it figured out: 'The most important thing is that I complete my mission, the work that the Lord Jesus gave me' (Acts 20:24 NCV). 'I wish they were wise and understood this; I wish they could see what will happen to them' (Deuteronomy 32:29 NCV). A life in which anything goes is a life in which nothing goes. Your greatest challenge is thinking and doing things that ultimately matter.

Smaugust Day 27: Fire
Tumblr media
Introducing a ‘new’ dragon, the ‘flaming serpent’. This was inspired by comments on my last boitatá artwork by James-Silvercat (see here) talking about the version of the boitatá legend wherein the serpent is literally on fire.
There are lots of serpents on fire in the Americas, there is the great Gaasyendietha from Seneca mythology up in Lake Ontario in the USA, the boitatá in Brazil, and the Cherruve from Chile (A Book of Creatures covered it here), so I thought having a ‘flaming serpent’ species with many subspecies would be the best way to handle this.
The flaming serpent is a species of ‘feathered’ serpent, similar to the coatl. The ‘feathers’ are actually long thin scales called ‘psuedopennae’, and while the coatl has a green/blue iridescence, the flaming serpent has an black-gold-red iridescence, similar to some hummingbirds:
Tumblr media
(Gif of a Rufous Hummingbird - Selasphorus rufus - by stiekemekat)
The dragon can appear a dull brown or black until the light catches it in a certain way, and as it wiggles flashes like golden fire run down it’s body. They undulate as they swim or fly, like a living flame.
The shape of the scales can produce a whistling sound when the dragon is in flight, similar to the Mapuche legends of the peuchen, a blood-sucking flying serpent (and possibly yet another flaming serpent subspecies). This dragon will still have the spooky reflective eyes, but probably won’t have the bio-luminescent tail.

Peuchen
Tumblr media
(Illustration by Dave Allsop comes from the PathfinderWiki and is © Paizo Publishing.)
I’m a big fan of Dave Allsop’s art—he did the Bestiary’s woeful mite and the amazing papinijuwari I was so excited about a few months ago—so I’m a little bummed that his peuchen, while beautiful, doesn’t capture the scale of the beast.  What he’s painted looks like an exotic species you’d see on display in a fantasy reptile house or curled around the arm of some sorceress.  But it’s actually a roughly human-sized (Medium) monster that punches in at a mighty CR 10.
And that, in a nutshell, is why I like the peuchen: It’s a pretty good dragon substitute for low-level campaigns.
But let’s back up. The peuchen is a cryptid from Andean mythology, especially Chile and Argentina—likely a mashup of the boa and the vampire bat—that is a feared shapeshifter who drains the blood of livestock and lone shepherds. Pathfinder’s version follows that outline almost exactly (right down to bleed and blood drain abilities, as well as the ability to cast hold person and vampiric touch).
I’m always looking for good non-European monsters I can point GMs to, and the peuchen definitely checks that box.  (Which is awesome, as South America is probably our least-represented continent in terms of Bestiary monsters.  Even Antarctica has a better selection once you start throwing in Lovecraft, John Carpenter’s The Thing, Hollow Earth tales and other pulp inspirations.). Then again, if you’re a Euro diehard, the peuchen reskinned could make a perfectly acceptable version of Fáfnir the dragon.  I’m also always looking for ways to tell bring more intimate, narrative and folktale-inspired gaming into Pathfinder.  And I can totally see a slow-moving, low-XP campaign where a PC’s parent’s death hangs over the campaign…with the peuchen teased as the culprit all along but finally revealed somewhere around Level 6 or 7, just as the players are really coming into their full powers.
But if you want straight-up hack & slash…well, Camazotz is about the most badass god/devil/demon (depending on your game world) out there.  Someone’s got to clean out his creepy jungle temple superdungeon…and guess what’s the perfect monster to fight on Level 10?
Nutmeg’s value to spice traders isn’t just from its rarity and taste—it’s also dangerous to harvest.  Peuchens delight in polishing their scales with the crushed aromatic seeds of the nutmeg tree.  Harvesters in the Bluewater Isles need adventurers who will guard their crews from the cunning winged snakes.
The fey of the Bier of Bone—bloodthirsty pixies, tooth fairies, quicklings, redcaps, and worse—all serve the mad leanan sidhe Umlar.  Her prize pet is a peuchen the blue of a bird of paradise.  Recently she has been distracted by the charms of a larabay (who secretly plots to steal her throne), leaving the peuchen as the main guardian of her ivory hoard.
Years ago, a silver-tongued drover talked his ways out of the jaws of a peuchen by offering to deliver livestock the likes of which the winged snaked had never tasted. Intrigued, the peuchen agreed, and was rewarded with Huwari beef from the Olfshires—a kind of cattle newly brought by Northern colonists.  Desiring more such delicacies, the peuchen and the drover began trading Northern cattle for alpacas, llamas, and other livestock. Today the drover is the most powerful beef importer in the thriving colony Sor Pelag, with the peuchen as his silent partner—and occasional enforcer.  When a new source of flesh—glowing, duergar-raised deep oxen—threatens the pair’s monopoly, they turn to murder to keep their balance sheets in the black.
—Pathfinder Bestiary 5 189
The history of nutmeg is actually super interesting.  Nutmeg is also one of the reasons that, while Pepsi always does better in blind taste tests, Coke is more popular in reality—the nutmeg in a Coke Classic sets off more flavor sensors and yields a more complex, richer experience over the course of the entire can.  (At least according to some New Yorker article I read years ago.)
I keep waiting for my day job to hand my some kind of nutmeg-related project, but so far I’ve only played around with for turmeric and bay leaves.
Looking for the penguin? We covered that way back here.

April 23rd, 1912 - American Inquiry Day 4
Tumblr media
Day 4: Senator Smith starts the day reading a doctor’s note that certified that Mr. J. B. Boxhall (due to continue testimony that morning) was under professional care and “physically unable to appear before the Senate investigating committee today”. Nothing more was said on the matter, and Smith then called his first witness.
Witnesses called on day four were as follows:
Herbert John Pitman, Third Officer, RMS Titanic;
Frederick Fleet, Lookout, RMS Titanic;
Arthur G. Peuchen, First Class Passenger, RMS Titanic;
Not a witness, but spoke up during Pitman’s testimony - Charles Lightoller, Second Officer, RMS Titanic;
Notable Quotes/Lines of Questioning:
Each member of the crew thus far had been asked whether they were on the ship for the trials, if there was an officer of White Star Line aboard for them, (to which most replied that they would not know) and about the boat drills that took place between those trials and her April 10th departure. Per Pitman: “ Yes. We always have boat drill leaving Southampton ...  which is witnessed by the board of trade. We also have boat drill in Queenstown.” The drill consisted of lowering two or three life boats, rowing about the harbor and coming back. On this particular voyage the drill was not done in Queenstown.
“It is customary every Sunday to have boat and fire drill. If we can not have it on Sunday, if the weather does not permit that, we have it on some other day.” - Pitman (This drill was not done on Sunday before they struck the iceberg.)
Officers were also always asked about what they knew about ice going into Saturday and Sunday while at sea. Most only had a vague idea that there might be some nearby or that there was a warning from another boat. It appeared that thus far in the inquiry, there was not much talk about ice at all, excepting late Sunday evening, and even then not all were privy. Many also said they did not see ice until Monday morning as the sun rose and there was ice all around them.
Pitman’s recollection of what happened after he woke up from the impact, thinking they were dropping anchor, is quite interesting and worth a read. For space purposes, I have included this link to it.
“Then this man in the dressing gown said we had better get her loaded with women and children. So I said, "I await the commander's orders," to which he replied, "Very well," or something like that. It then dawned on me that it might be Mr. Ismay, judging by the description I had had given me. So I went along to the bridge and saw Capt. Smith, and I told him that I thought it was Mr. Ismay that wished me to get the boat away, with women and children in it. So he said, "Go ahead; carry on." I came along and brought in my boat. I stood on it and said, "Come along, ladies." There was a big crowd. Mr. Ismay helped to get them along; assisted in every way. We got the boat nearly full, and I shouted out for any more ladies.” -Pitman
Just read his testimony, his has impacted me the most just far. Smith pressed Pittman about what he heard after Titanic finally foundered, and numerous times he replied “I would rather you did not speak of it”.
Pitman testified that the berg ripped the side out, the bilge keel “halfway along the ship”, and judged that had the impact occurred bows on “she would have been afloat now.”
“ 2.20 exactly, ship's time. I took my watch out at the time she disappeared, and I said, "It is 2.20," and the passengers around me heard it.” - Pitman
“ We had none this time. We had nothing at all, only our own eyes, to look out...  We asked them in Southampton[for glasses(binoculars)], and they said there was none for us.” - Fleet
Senator SMITH: “Suppose you had had glasses such as you had on the Oceanic, or such as you had between Belfast and Southampton, could you have seen this black object a greater distance?” Mr. FLEET:
“We could have seen it a bit sooner.” Senator SMITH: “How much sooner?” Mr. FLEET: “Well, enough to get out of the way.
I am only posting this as a notable quote, later research suggests that Fleet’s opinion may not in fact be quite true.
Well after this, I lost about an hour of work on the remainder of Fleet’s testimony and all but the quote below from Major Peuchen. Because I am about to cry and or lose my mind, I implore you to read the testimony from Pittman, but also from Arthur G. Peuchen. Both were extremely interesting and enlightening. Additionally, Peuchen was able to tell his story from leaving Southampton to rescue by Carpathia with MUCH less interruption from the Senators, which makes it an easier read.
“I have been quoted as making a great many statements or as saying several things, and I would like to just put this straight. I do not criticize Capt. Smith, but I do criticize the policy and methods pursued by the company, for I feel sure that in this case caution would have been of every virtue and would have averted the terrible calamity. I have been given the credit of saying many things which are absolutely untrue and I wish to state that I have not said any personal or unkind thing about Capt. Smith. I have been quoted as saying some very unkind things about the late captain, but I assure you I have never made any statement of that kind.” - Peuchen
SEE American Inquiry Day 3 post here.
Maybe once I am caught up, I will come back and redo this post, but for now i will post so I do not lose my mind.
