Dragons in South America and Mesoamerica

My creative project Dracones Mundi is a field guide to dragons of the world - I need to add more dragons to South America and Mesoamerica I think? This is a post to show what I have so far, in honour of Smaugust!

The first dragon I will discuss is the coatl. Coameh have two subspecies: the dry forest coatl and the rainforest coatl (excuse to base appearances closer to Aztec or Maya depictions of coameh, Maya = rainforest, Aztec = dryforest), depicted here is a dry forest coatl; the rainforest one is larger with a smaller frill. These are found in Mexico.

Closely related to the coatl is the flaming serpent, with several more subspecies (tlilcoatl, cherruve, tsamtás, mboitatá, plus a few others I will describe when I do North American dragon post) - it is an iridescent dragon, sometimes black with gold shining iridescence, but usually flame-coloured. When swimming through the air, catching sunlight, it looks like a living fire. These are found throughout Mexico and South America (and, as I mentioned, some in North America too!)

Then we have a dragon from Patagonia, the nguruvilu or fox serpent (I may make longer and add the distinctive tail with a claw on the end of it, this was a rushed doodle just getting the gist of half-fox-half-serpent while still fitting with the Dracones Mundi crocodile-dragon vibe) (the fox colours are based on the grey fox found in South America)

And lastly we have a 100% made up based loosely on pop culture 'fae dragon' or 'butterfly dragon', part of the winged serpent family in Dracones Mundi (dragons with 4 wings and very small arms and a distinctive tail fluke). As I had a group of 4-winged dragons, I thought a butterfly dragon might be fun! I'm plopping these into the Amazon rainforest.

Also, cockatrices have a worldwide distribution so they are found in Mesoamerica and South America too!

It is finally done! This series takes more time than I thought, mostly bc I never good at bg or special effect. There are some minor mistakes in each Hashiras, mainly I forgot to paint the gold button 😅😂

But thx you to everyone for following this little series. I still have many more painting/art want to share ^^, and I might turn this into a product, poster… For the moment, I have left some little notes and sketches base on each Hashiras Giyuu as. Check them out !🤩🤩👇🏻👇🏻

Kamado Tanjiro

Tanjiro likes how cute you are. Little, hyperactive, helpful. You’re always running around with a broom or a water bucket to clean something. He doesn’t even need to ask you, you’re just being his little personal maid

Despite the fact, as your older brother, he should be taking care of and cleaning for you. No, you’re the one taking charge and making sure Nezuko’s box is shined to perfection, sweeping up the floors around his bed in the Butterfly Mansion and obsessing over seeing such mess

Tanjiro does worry about you a lot. Whilst the clean freak, caring and energetic demeanour you display is good. There is many negatives of your habits that has his heart aching with concern and his hands on the verge of ripping out his own hair. You’re reckless in your work

Overworking. Cleaning the Butterfly Mansion obsessively and for hours until Shinobu has to bring your exhausted but stubborn form to him so he can care for you, since you’ve been working yourself into the earth. Tanjiro appreciates all the unconditional maid care you’re doing for him, your own sister Nezuko and any home the Kamados refuge in but he can’t stand you risking your health

Overall. Tanjiro does really love you, he loves the cute little red and white maid kimono you wear and he loves how passionate and zesty you are, cleaning, cooking or sewing but he wishes you’d calm it down… not just for him but for yourself. At least; you, him and Nezuko can cook your mother’s recipes to relax

Iguro Obanai

Obanai finds this… well. He doesn’t know how to feel about your obsessive cleaning love. The fact, you act like some housewife despite being once over his age. You’re a child, you’re the poor innocent little girl he had picked up as his own child, out of pure pity for your position(since it was just like his) and whilst you’re not his biologically, he’s protective

So, he is a lot less tolerant over how hardworking and reckless over your own health you are. That you spend hours on end cleaning and perfecting everything around you. He doesn’t like it at all and he doesn’t mind being either strict or harsh to get his point across. You’re his kid, he can discipline you when he wants

Of course, Obanai isn’t cruel. He is only trying to fix up, what he believes to be, your OCD to save your health so he forces you to stop mopping his floors around 8pm and puts you to bed with no buts allowed. He’ll let you be his little maid and care for the home you share with him but not when it includes putting yourself behind the work

Obanai does like to bond with you over sewing and cooking. Your skillset is of a housewife and whilst he finds it weird that his adoptive kid has housewife mindset, he isn’t going to just stop because he is uncomfortable by mere talents you have. Cooking and sewing are important to your life growing up so he encourages it

Besides the whole overworking thing and how invested in cleaning the Estate you become, he does really like your behaviours. You’re the perfect child; free-spirited, independent, confident. He likes how your trauma hasn’t effected you and he wouldn’t get rid of you, even if your own habits are annoying and concerning

Rengoku Kyojuro

Oh. How wonderful, now, he has two child houserearers in his life. One, his younger brother Senjuro and now you, his precious adoptive daughter. He finds you the most gorgeous little lively flame to ever exist and he does truly encourage your cleaning habits. It’s good to develop excellent hygiene, as Kyojuro says! However, even Kyojuro has limits to good hygiene practice

At first, he doesn’t really notice it much since he wants to be the most uplifting, sweet, considerate father he possibly can be for you. He doesn’t want to tell you what to do, even when it severely worries him. He doesn’t know how to talk about it but he does have the guts to bring it up and try make some type of compromise

Kyojuro really doesn’t like seeing you up at 1am scrubbing the windows frantically since you spotted some smudges you’re struggling to get out. It’s not healthy and it’s too risky. He loves you a lot and he doesn’t want you to be treated as some slave. You’re not a slave, you’re his babygirl. Even if he just got you, you’re still his and he wants to care for you, not enable a bad habit. Rather it offend you or not. He needs to put his foot down

Kyojuro decides to begin balancing checking up on you to his regular vigorous training. Task you with cleaning like sweeping or scrubbing the outside porch so he can always keep his eye on you and make sure you’re not going to pass out from exhaustion with a bottle of bleach in your hands once more. You’re a child, not a robot

Kyojuro is only being specific and setting down rules for your own sake, not for his. To him, the most important thing to him is his all-knowing, big-eyed little demon. You may stress him out with your cleaning obsession but otherwise, he enjoys cooking with you. It’s very relaxing

Have you heard of the perelesnyk? I think it would fit in well with your other "flaming" serpents

I don't have a species dedicated to perelesnyk but they are mentioned in the Glowtail chapter rather than the Flaming Serpent one - irl any serpent which is on fire is classed as a flaming serpent, usually associated with comets and meteorites with their burning tails in the sky. However in my own worldbuilding I have divided dragons-on-fire into different species.

In Dracones Mundi I have a dragon called a Glowtail which is found in it's native range in Southeast Asia, then in feral ranges throughout Europe and Asia. It is a close relative of the cockatrice and has a bioluminescent tail and wings. In Europe glowtails go by many names, such as aitvaras, gluehschwanz, pukis, etc. Any 'dragon with a burning tail' or 'small house dragon' is a glowtail, whereas the flaming serpents in North, South and Mesoamerica are a different animal entirely, with iridescent gold and orange scales and a serpentine body.

I've arbitrarily divided some flaming serpents from others because I'm having fun designing dragons, not for any folklore or mythology reasons :)

Oh! I definitely will! I really like Link, especially BOTW Link, so let’s gooo! Definitely a bit longer than I suspected but it’s okay!

Yandere! Romantic! KNY Hashira Scenarios: Rengoku Kyojuro vs Iguro Obanai

Since Kyojuro is the extroverted one of this Hashira pair, he befriended you first. He was highly impressed by your skills with your Nichirin Blade and the righteous nature you wore on your sleeve. You’re like a elfkin hero, protecting the kingdom

Kyojuro falls for you quickly and grows utterly obsessed with you, all the more time he spends getting to know you. His heart explodes everytime you offer him your Ongiri with a smile, no words

After a little while, you are determined to further refine your skills so you go to Obanai for swords tricks. Obanai falls for you seemingly faster than Kyojuro and becomes intrigued by you with each training session you do with him

You don’t need to say a single word to prove your courage, your loyalty, your fearlessness. Obanai and Kyojuro both adore you for your personality, you’re so likeable that they feel like the prayers worshipping a goddess

The life-changing obsession and not-so-sane love grow at a intense rate as you visit Kyojuro for training then visit Obanai for training. Like with the Kyojuro Vs Mitsuri post, they’d both want you to become their Tsuguko, though, they’d try to keep their new behaviours a secret

Eventually, you decide to invite Obanai to attend a dinner night with you that Kyojuro is hosting. You value both of the Hashira as your dear friends and want to spend time with both, instead of just one. However, Obanai is very aggressive towards Kyojuro, behind your back, from the beginning

Kyojuro won’t take Obanai’s shit though(he just won’t let himself lose his composure around you), he’ll passive-aggressively push back. Their arguments get a lot more dangerous when they realise they both are madly in love with you and are far too ready to shed blood to win your heart

Both are already clingy and possessive over you, so it just gets worse when the rivalry truly comes to life. Go with one Hashira, you won’t be allowed to leave as they’ll beg you to stay. Kyojuro inadvertently intimidates you whilst Obanai emotionally manipulates you

This rivalry is one of the most toxics of the Yandere Hashira as this two are dangerous Yanderes enough for the general public. Pitting them against each other will never end without a sword being swung, and at least one having to be tended for a cut wound

These two constantly fuel the war of hyper passive-aggressive discussions with one another. Obanai is very harsh with open anger and Kyojuro strikes hard with a twisted smile. Every single situation with will end with them fighting very furiously

“Iguro-san. Dokusha-chan is trying to tend to the victims, you definitely should just stand back for once? Or are you that incapable of understanding basic boundaries?”

“Talking like you understand common sense, Rengoku. What did you do again? That’s right, steal Dokusha’s food after laying on her lap. Don’t you dare talk like you are flawless with boundaries”

They both like to guess what you’re thinking as you seemingly can’t say any of it. Such a interesting game as you’re basically unreadable, Obanai helps brush your hair with a half-assed guess as Kyojuro watches from the other end with hate flowing out of him. Obanai smirks at Kyojuro’s rage

Suspect both to race each other into looking after you. They are like your servants, they wait on your hand and foot constantly, and will shove each other around to get you what you want first. Even with the other Hashira, Obanai and Kyojuro are swiping at each other for the rice bowl you wanted

That mess just ends with Giyuu giving it to you and the two losing their minds as both consider killing the Water Hashira

They have a matching quality. They’ll gladly kill/mutilate/injure anybody for you. Kyojuro meets the enemy and kills them right away, Obanai tracks the enemy down and tortures them before killing. Obanai is more twisted then Kyojuro in a sense of murder but Kyojuro is more scary than Obanai

They both learnt everything they possibly can about you from the shadows of your Estate. Yes, both the Flame Hashira and Serpent Hashira stalk you, and they do it a lot. Their obsession with your life and the many features is endless, they want to know everything

Obanai steals insignificant things from your Estate to feed his sick fantasies whilst Kyojuro goes through your belongings to satisfy his thirst. Though, they are equally delusional in the view of how much you like them

After they begin acting so erratic and psychotic over you. You quickly begin drifting away, wanting to make new allies and hoping it’ll defend you from the two Hashira you use to like. Nowadays, you avoid them like the plague

Yes, they both learnt how to cook to impress you. You’re known for your on-the-go cooking and impressive dishes made from wild ingredients, so both Kyojuro and Obanai trained themselves to the bone to make something similar to try win you

Subtly hint at something you want, both are on their way to deliver. Want a horse for better transportation of victims? Both have gifted you a horse. Want a new haori of your favourite BOTW Link-style pattern? You’ll have a pile at your front door. Like the flowerbed you spotted one time? Your backyard is full of the flowers from that same flowerbed

“Oh… you also got Dokusha a rescue stead? Why would you do that, you fool. She doesn’t need two. As you can see, i already gotten her the most trained stallion in all of Tokyo. I recommend you get lost”

“Stallions are dangerous, as opposed to Mares. Dokusha is smart enough to refuse such a bad option, she’ll pick my Mare. A perfect stead and you are simply wrong for thinking that yours is better”

Kyojuro indirectly mocks Obanai for his smaller size and weaker body. That walking red flag can’t carry all of your weapons like he can, he can’t hold you in his arms like Kyojuro can. Why pick that scrawny brat when Kyojuro is right there, the best husband choice

Obanai retaliates each time with the one power card he has that’s a easy to pro to win over your attention. His swordsmanship skills. Obanai can defeat Kyojuro in a fight with solely katanas and that unique sword-bending ability of his is what attracted you to him in the first place. And Obanai abuses the hell out of that fact

Did I mention husband? Yep, both of these Yanderes want you to be their bride so both would eventually propose. Obanai prefers marrying you later but with Kyojuro proposing to you, he goes straight into the proposal too. You’ve said no so many times, you have to call a another Hashira in to shoo the two away as neither will take ‘no’

They can’t understand your rejection. They love you too much to let reality bleed into their fantasies so they just manipulate themselves into deflecting the rejection. Though, they understand each other’s feelings for you as clear as crystal

It doesn’t matter how much you hate them or call out their behaviour. Neither will stop fighting with one another for you nor stop pursuing you. You’re their little champion, a armourless knight with the mark of courage on her wrist

Why would they let that go? You will pick one of them to finally end this disaster and when you do, the one left behind will have his katana always ready to murder the man you chose at every opporunity

You were the heroic knight but now, you’re the trapped damsel in distress. The two love-hungry beasts, who act like they are your knights, are the ones who truly hurt you

“Would you like to traverse the woods with me? I heard there’ll be a Twilight moon out tonight, doesn’t that sound beautiful?”

“Dokusha-san! Have you heard? There is a special Ocarina in the stock market! Shall we go pick it up together?”

Also. The lack of manga icons for Obanai and Kyojuro is killing me so I sadly had to use anime frames! Hope, i can find more manga stuff!
