Dragons in South America and Mesoamerica

My creative project Dracones Mundi is a field guide to dragons of the world - I need to add more dragons to South America and Mesoamerica I think? This is a post to show what I have so far, in honour of Smaugust!

The first dragon I will discuss is the coatl. Coameh have two subspecies: the dry forest coatl and the rainforest coatl (excuse to base appearances closer to Aztec or Maya depictions of coameh, Maya = rainforest, Aztec = dryforest), depicted here is a dry forest coatl; the rainforest one is larger with a smaller frill. These are found in Mexico.

Closely related to the coatl is the flaming serpent, with several more subspecies (tlilcoatl, cherruve, tsamtás, mboitatá, plus a few others I will describe when I do North American dragon post) - it is an iridescent dragon, sometimes black with gold shining iridescence, but usually flame-coloured. When swimming through the air, catching sunlight, it looks like a living fire. These are found throughout Mexico and South America (and, as I mentioned, some in North America too!)

Then we have a dragon from Patagonia, the nguruvilu or fox serpent (I may make longer and add the distinctive tail with a claw on the end of it, this was a rushed doodle just getting the gist of half-fox-half-serpent while still fitting with the Dracones Mundi crocodile-dragon vibe) (the fox colours are based on the grey fox found in South America)

And lastly we have a 100% made up based loosely on pop culture 'fae dragon' or 'butterfly dragon', part of the winged serpent family in Dracones Mundi (dragons with 4 wings and very small arms and a distinctive tail fluke). As I had a group of 4-winged dragons, I thought a butterfly dragon might be fun! I'm plopping these into the Amazon rainforest.

Also, cockatrices have a worldwide distribution so they are found in Mesoamerica and South America too!

Kamado Tanjiro

Tanjiro likes how cute you are. Little, hyperactive, helpful. You’re always running around with a broom or a water bucket to clean something. He doesn’t even need to ask you, you’re just being his little personal maid

Despite the fact, as your older brother, he should be taking care of and cleaning for you. No, you’re the one taking charge and making sure Nezuko’s box is shined to perfection, sweeping up the floors around his bed in the Butterfly Mansion and obsessing over seeing such mess

Tanjiro does worry about you a lot. Whilst the clean freak, caring and energetic demeanour you display is good. There is many negatives of your habits that has his heart aching with concern and his hands on the verge of ripping out his own hair. You’re reckless in your work

Overworking. Cleaning the Butterfly Mansion obsessively and for hours until Shinobu has to bring your exhausted but stubborn form to him so he can care for you, since you’ve been working yourself into the earth. Tanjiro appreciates all the unconditional maid care you’re doing for him, your own sister Nezuko and any home the Kamados refuge in but he can’t stand you risking your health

Overall. Tanjiro does really love you, he loves the cute little red and white maid kimono you wear and he loves how passionate and zesty you are, cleaning, cooking or sewing but he wishes you’d calm it down… not just for him but for yourself. At least; you, him and Nezuko can cook your mother’s recipes to relax

Iguro Obanai

Obanai finds this… well. He doesn’t know how to feel about your obsessive cleaning love. The fact, you act like some housewife despite being once over his age. You’re a child, you’re the poor innocent little girl he had picked up as his own child, out of pure pity for your position(since it was just like his) and whilst you’re not his biologically, he’s protective

So, he is a lot less tolerant over how hardworking and reckless over your own health you are. That you spend hours on end cleaning and perfecting everything around you. He doesn’t like it at all and he doesn’t mind being either strict or harsh to get his point across. You’re his kid, he can discipline you when he wants

Of course, Obanai isn’t cruel. He is only trying to fix up, what he believes to be, your OCD to save your health so he forces you to stop mopping his floors around 8pm and puts you to bed with no buts allowed. He’ll let you be his little maid and care for the home you share with him but not when it includes putting yourself behind the work

Obanai does like to bond with you over sewing and cooking. Your skillset is of a housewife and whilst he finds it weird that his adoptive kid has housewife mindset, he isn’t going to just stop because he is uncomfortable by mere talents you have. Cooking and sewing are important to your life growing up so he encourages it

Besides the whole overworking thing and how invested in cleaning the Estate you become, he does really like your behaviours. You’re the perfect child; free-spirited, independent, confident. He likes how your trauma hasn’t effected you and he wouldn’t get rid of you, even if your own habits are annoying and concerning

Rengoku Kyojuro

Oh. How wonderful, now, he has two child houserearers in his life. One, his younger brother Senjuro and now you, his precious adoptive daughter. He finds you the most gorgeous little lively flame to ever exist and he does truly encourage your cleaning habits. It’s good to develop excellent hygiene, as Kyojuro says! However, even Kyojuro has limits to good hygiene practice

At first, he doesn’t really notice it much since he wants to be the most uplifting, sweet, considerate father he possibly can be for you. He doesn’t want to tell you what to do, even when it severely worries him. He doesn’t know how to talk about it but he does have the guts to bring it up and try make some type of compromise

Kyojuro really doesn’t like seeing you up at 1am scrubbing the windows frantically since you spotted some smudges you’re struggling to get out. It’s not healthy and it’s too risky. He loves you a lot and he doesn’t want you to be treated as some slave. You’re not a slave, you’re his babygirl. Even if he just got you, you’re still his and he wants to care for you, not enable a bad habit. Rather it offend you or not. He needs to put his foot down

Kyojuro decides to begin balancing checking up on you to his regular vigorous training. Task you with cleaning like sweeping or scrubbing the outside porch so he can always keep his eye on you and make sure you’re not going to pass out from exhaustion with a bottle of bleach in your hands once more. You’re a child, not a robot

Kyojuro is only being specific and setting down rules for your own sake, not for his. To him, the most important thing to him is his all-knowing, big-eyed little demon. You may stress him out with your cleaning obsession but otherwise, he enjoys cooking with you. It’s very relaxing

Have you heard of the perelesnyk? I think it would fit in well with your other "flaming" serpents

I don't have a species dedicated to perelesnyk but they are mentioned in the Glowtail chapter rather than the Flaming Serpent one - irl any serpent which is on fire is classed as a flaming serpent, usually associated with comets and meteorites with their burning tails in the sky. However in my own worldbuilding I have divided dragons-on-fire into different species.

In Dracones Mundi I have a dragon called a Glowtail which is found in it's native range in Southeast Asia, then in feral ranges throughout Europe and Asia. It is a close relative of the cockatrice and has a bioluminescent tail and wings. In Europe glowtails go by many names, such as aitvaras, gluehschwanz, pukis, etc. Any 'dragon with a burning tail' or 'small house dragon' is a glowtail, whereas the flaming serpents in North, South and Mesoamerica are a different animal entirely, with iridescent gold and orange scales and a serpentine body.

I've arbitrarily divided some flaming serpents from others because I'm having fun designing dragons, not for any folklore or mythology reasons :)

The Respectable Hashira

When Shinjuro Rengoku fall into his depression, Iguro often visit him in hope that's he'll eventually returning even before he himself become a hashira. (Shinjuro retiring before iguro was promoted to hashira). He was a respectable hashira among the peers. Iguro were saved by him, so it's pain him that the hero he looked up to turned into a haggard old man.

As always, the old man often told him to leave him alone. "it's no use for you to come everyday, I'm not a hero nor your rescuer anymore. Go home"

The last time he visit was when the hashira training session were held. He took time to visit Shinjuro. He's much better than before, but the old man looked like he couldn't watch him in the eyes.

"what did you get from visiting a useless old man like this. It's too late if you still insist me to return"

"Rengoku san, I'm not asking you to return anymore... How are you? I'm glad you seem to reduce your alcohol consumption. Senjuro tell me your health is much better now" iguro drink his tea.

"I'm just like this...i heard about the training and the marks. Are you fine with it?"

"I'm fine."

The convo which usually didn't end well were surprisingly feel so smooth and fine that day. Shinjuro watching that traumatized little kid growing up, becoming a hashira, who, for him is much more respectable than himself. The young serpent hashira excused himself and smiling for him. It's a very rare, for Shinjuro to watch him smile like that. Perhaps this was the only time.

And that was his last time watching that kid. The memories of him rescuing that small fragile child come in full like a movie rail. 'That child must be disappointed of me, didnt he. '

He offering him a plate full of sweet and bitter tea, the usual dishes they ate when iguro was living in his estate for a bit. In front of his grave, Shinjuro smile.

'Obanai, you growing up fine, as opposed of me, you becoming a respectable hashira who embodied that title so precisely. In the next life, even if we couldn't meet anymore, live your life to the fullest. Don't blaming yourself for everything that wasn't in your control"

The feeling of ashamed isn't something that he could brush away. His son, his son's tsuguko, mitsuri, obanai, everyone else, younger than him fought until the end. Thinking about it, he was rather fragile more than that little kid he saved.

However, as he was still alive, maybe God want to give him another chance in this life. He looked at his other son, Senjuro, who carefully cleaning his brother's stone, despite aren't being blessed with swords skill, he admitted Senjuro is a good kid, Ruka doing her best, raising his sons, especially when he always away.

At the very least, until he himself died, he want and will protect Senjuro and support him, there's nothing he could hope for. For this very chance, he want to redeem himself.

This is another item from our collection inspired by a random visitor who popped into our Stream (every Mon\Wed\Fri!). Serpent’s Flame

Weapon (dagger), very rare (requires attunement)

“The hilt of this dagger looks like the head of a red dragon, mouth open with the blade rising out as if it was spewing a silvered breath of fire. The blade snakes and shifts in a serpent-like shape.”

You have a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon, and it returns to the wielder’s hand immediately after it is used to make a ranged attack. When you score a critical hit using this weapon you can summon a fire elemental under your control. The elemental remains under your control for 1 minute, after which it turns on you.  The elemental can be dismissed with a bonus action so long as it is under your control. While the elemental is active this weapon deals an additional 2d6 fire damage.

Iguro Obanai

Obanai understands fully why you’re afraid of men and why you cower at the sight of him. Most men are vile, dangerous monsters from what he’s seen but he doesn’t want to hurt you and likes the look of you

Obanai develops a precise strategy to try get around your fear. He gives you gifts everyday, little gifts as Kaburamaru slithers into your sight, before he leaves. This way your developing mind tells you that he isn’t a threat

Obanai is relived and joyous when you finally willingly show yourself to him and go up to him. He makes no subtle movements, staying dead still to let you examine him until you proclaim you trust him

Obanai is very soft, harmless and defensive over you post-trust building. He knows just because you like him doesn’t mean, you like every man so he needs to keep you safe. He shields you from the psychotic ones and continues to gift you random cute accessories each day

Uzui Tengen

Yeah. That makes sense, Tengen can fully grasp why you’re afraid of all men, including him. He would have been the same if he didn’t have this career, yet, he wants to help you and give you a home so he gets to work

Tengen thinks the best thing he can do to try build trust is have his wives talk to you as comfort before revealing himself. You are fine around women so if polite, sweet women introduce him, it may tell you that he is a trustworthy being and overtime, it actually does

Tengen has to keep his eccentric excitement and relief hidden with you when you walk over to him yourself. His wives did a excellent job at painting him as a good person, he reaches for your head and asks for permission to pay

Tengen is like a playful protective dad post-trust building. He keeps only openly harmful men away from you and gives you whatever you want, he does spoil you rotten but how else can he heal your broken heart without showing you luxury

Rengoku Kyojuro

Kyojuro feels immense shame and anger at his own sex. You’re afraid of men because they kept hurting you over and over, and he wants to do everything he can to fix that, make it that you’re not afraid of men so you don’t have to suffer

Kyojuro can’t stop all the fear but he can limit it with him. He immediately devises a plan to try win your trust, himself doesn’t talk to you but his little brother Senjuro tries, instead. It’s a bit more successful but each conversation with Senjuro convinces both Rengokus aren’t out to hurt you

Kyojuro’s relief and pride overflows his body when you, with Senjuro, go up to hug him. He can’t bring himself to move at all as he is worried that you’ll run away if he makes a single flinch. Like a helpless infant animal, he is so careful with how he moves

Kyojuro is the most affectionate and doting of the three here. He wants to express his care to you fully, no smoke and mirrors, so your little brain knows he is just here to love and protect you. He avoids the dangerous men in public altogether and lets you talk to women only
