You know I saw some analysis of Petyr and his childhood with Cat a couple of months ago. Like, that Cat mitigates what happened and it was a huge dark toxic problematic thing where she was fought over ‘like a trophy’. ‘Trophy’ was obviously in a negative way. You know it's such a goofy thing to read that. The first part was already cracking at the seams because fighting for a woman, having duels, it wasn't problematic, it was like: ‘oh well, it'll be decided that way’, dangerous, not very nice one, but it was one of the social thing and not very uncommon at that time.

I wouldn't let my cheek be cut for a ‘trophy’. Would you? Petyr went into battle against an experienced warrior, risking his life.

There was no way Cat could be with him, and there was nothing Peter could do because he was a lower status boy with no power. He wanted to be part of the family, status and power, that's why he was so drawn to Cat, is that the only reason? This particular episode says huge - no - to this, it was a very deep feeling.

You can try to construe his feelings as ‘toxic obsession’ - though I'm not a fan when a person's love-passion in medieval dark fantasy is characterised that way. It's just boring and smells like Starbucks, I'll come back to that later.

Petyr definitely created a ‘scandal’ with this challenge. Which was the right thing to not do and let Cat adjust her relationship with her fiancé, considering her father wouldn't give his daughter away to the ‘little man’ anyway. Oh well, that's how feelings work. Rhaegar could have not ‘kidnapped’ Lyanna, and Lyanna could have said no and the war wouldn't have happened. In general a lot of things might not have happened if the characters had stopped being ‘problematic’ people in medieval times.

Petyr's fight for Cat is one of the best things about Pityr, his character. Not as a tragedy, a sad thing only - it's all like a very emotional, love story. You can imagine how painful it is to love someone, to know that you can't be together because you have ‘low blood’ and she's the daughter of the ‘River King’. He spent more than one day with that thought, I think, when he found out about the engagement.

It was a suicidal act. Petyr hardly cherished the hope of victory. He knew that such a scandal would alienate him from the Tully house (and it did, he was sent home).

Would Stark have killed him? Oh, he might have. And even one wound could get an infection, Kahal Drogo died from it. Was it offensive to Cat that Petyr had arranged it? Well, she might have been offended\angry at him that he did it - started the quarrel. But honestly ‘insulted that I'm a trophy’ is not what it's going to feel like to watch your friend possibly lose his life and stubbornly not give up getting hit again and again because he loves you. He just can't not try to do something and it's right to be quiet, to accept the fate of his blood, of his status.

Honestly, when I imagine him sitting there looking out the window at the rivers, thinking about it alone. My heart melts.

Very young, he's about 17, I'm sure he had ambitions, it takes a lifetime to realise them. But his feelings for Cat just overrode everything.

I'm a little bitter that his subtlety as a character seems to be something the fandom would rather not see. Although now it's like all fandoms are in some kind of.... purity, blending with reality. (forgetting the context of place and time, still shifting sometimes to personal experience)

So Petyr did it and he's got a scar all over his body. I think his heart, too. The whole Cat thing really affected him, so he has this taste for power. In Game of Thrones they'll deny you everything if you're ‘small’.

He's right in his desire for power, it's understandable why this happened. He was rejected. Anyone with his status would have been refused to marry Riverrun's daughter.

Back to feelings. I was curious long ago to study how the Greeks divided the feelings of love. ‘Love-play,’ “love-mania,” ’love-agape.’ You could add the term "true love" which compares to not "true". Then I came to the idea, thanks to one writer, that human, personality by nature, history, context, situation, time and time - are capable of different feelings and to separate them is a moot thing to do. These are all human feelings that can hardly be described, predicted and moulded.

Petyr's duel for Cat is a very subtle story of deep feeling, with many shades. Everyone was thinking their own thoughts and going through their own experiences about it when it happened, no matter their age or social status. And this episode resonated even with those who had only heard about it. Petyr caused a storm with this. One dominated by one thing - Petyr's genuine feeling for Cat.

I think his feeling is written very subtly and beautifully. Cat is an important character for Martin. I haven't followed his interviews much. I'm not very deep into the GoT fandom. I don't know what kind of character Petyr is to him, but I've always had the feeling that his character is one of the key ones to explore in Game of Thrones. And the most amazing thing is that one of the ‘most dangerous men in Westeros’ once did such a ‘foolish’ thing, because to lose the favour of House Tully, and more importantly: His mind, his feelings of fear, of pain and death was clouded due his feelings for a girl.

do you think petyr ever genuinely loved cat?

i mean that’s kinda complicated just bc it’s like. what even is “love” what qualifies as feeling love. can you call what tywin feels for jaime “love” when all tywin’s love does is make jaime increasingly more miserable and jaded about his life? can you call what alicent feels for aegon “love” when she’s specifically been pushing him towards a fate he doesn’t want his whole life? can you call what joffrey feels for his mother “love” when joffrey is outwardly very derisive of women & wives and clearly thinks cersei is weak and stupid? i would personally say that rhaenyra loves jacaerys but you can't ignore that this is a very selfish, very possessive, one track mind sort of love where jacaerys is not allowed to be truthful with her the way he wants; it's love on her terms only. i personally love to argue that like, viserys i and aegon ii DO in fact love their kids (yes, all of them) despite their deadbeat tendencies but you could call it perhaps a selfish sort of love as well, a love that is more a reflection of oneself than any sort of dedication to their children. i would argue cersei doesn’t particularly LIKE tommen but does love him, and that she doesn’t know a thing about who myrcella really is but does love her, but really, is that love worth a damn in the end when she’s being actively vicious towards tommen for acting like the child he is? i think it all comes down to like, how do YOU define love - is it merely a feeling or is it an action?

for petyr, i think when he was very young, pre-injury, he felt a sort of love for catelyn yes. maybe an immature sort of love, like the way you feel about your high school girlfriend or your college best friend; there’s real, deep, consuming emotion there esp when you compare those feelings to your fleeting crushes of early childhood but it’s not as selfless, not as mature perhaps. i wouldn’t call this an “untrue” love - what’s that line from stand by me, where gordie says that he never had any friends he loved so much as the ones he had when he was 12. i think this is the sort of love petyr & catelyn had for each other. it’s about growing up together, figuring out who you are alongside another person who is figuring out who they are. that’s a connection you don’t get to have at any other point in your life! no one else knows the romantic fantasies petyr had as a child, back when he still BELIEVED they could come true, no one else knows what catelyn was like back when her grief still kept her up at night.

but again, this is a very selfish love. it is a love that disregards catelyn's feelings on the matter, it is a love that turns her into a prize to be won instead of a real woman with real feelings, it is a love in which petyr can justify utterly ruining her life and the lives of her husband and children because he's been ~sleighted~ (no he fucking hasn't, HE NEVER ASKED CATELYN HOW SHE FELT!!). i think like a lot of men in this series, when you get into that "does he love x" question, it's like...what does it matter? in the end, does it matter whether tywin loved his kids? does it matter whether robert and rhaegar loved lyanna? does it matter that viserys loved rhaenyra, that jaehaerys loved alysanne, that hoster loved lysa? i think petyr feels like he really did love catelyn and i think he felt a childish sort of love for her that can only spring from growing up together. but that love was always just as much about proving himself to be just as good as the nobility he served, about being better than brandon stark, about his concepts of masculinity and worth and class. he loves the catelyn that existed in his mind and while i would argue that when they were small, the real catelyn and the imaginary one had many similarities, that love in the end is not enough for him to actually see her as a fully fleshed out woman with her own needs, her own desires, her own dreams, and if his image of her now is bitter it's because she dared to step out of that fantasy he tried to trap her in.

Petyr x Sansa canon potential

Seeing some talk about how PxS canon could have come about. I’m re-reading, my ‘canon’ version of “The Winds of Winter” :

It really does make me angry about how much potential Petyr x Sansa had in canon to be this amazing dark horse duo that could have taken over the entire game. The showruiners screwed everything up by making Petyr do something he would never do -- put Sansa in severe danger and worse by giving her to the Boltons. The smartest character in the series WOULD NOT DO THIS with his ace in the hole. 

There was so much they could have done, including freeing the North, working with Jon eventually and then working against Dany and Cersei. Sansa would learn everything from Petyr on how to play the game and ultimately RULE. 

Petyr, with all his faults, wanted a level playing field for low-borns like him. He was teaching Sansa this as well. Being his ‘bastard’ she began to really understand what privilege she had as a Stark. Abused by the Lannisters taught her that those rosy girlish dreams were bs and she needed to be her own knight in shining armour. 

Does Petyr truly care for her? Yes, I believe he does. She’s part ‘what could have been’ because of Catelyn and now even better because Sansa is what Cat could never be and thats a drug to him. Turning Sansa (to his own detriment) into a female version of himself. 

Sigh.

Yes, is it fucked up? Of course. But it would have been GREAT storytelling and even better in the end when Petyr eventually does die by her hand, it’s not like the show. Sansa actually cares for him, maybe even loves him but knows he has to die if she is going to rule. Watching that emotion in a scene would have been so amazing. It would be what the characters actually deserved instead of hack writing and a pointless plot that kills off the mastermind of the political game in the entire series.

Creature’s Petyr x Catelyn Masterlist, Part I

I've read it all...so you don't have to. 

I was delighted to get back on this app and find that there was demand for something like this. Even in the time since I started compiling this list, I've seen a few other lists going around, which makes my previously-closeted-PxC-shipper heart fucking sing. Y'all, I am not exaggerating when I say I very well may have read every single fic ever written for this pairing. That's both a fool's errand and impossibly easy considering the sheer lack of content, as I'm sure you know yourself if you're reading this post. 

I have stirred the dust at the very edges of the internet in my desperate, months-long search for quality content for this pairing. And believe me you, I'm no stranger to the disappointment of seeing something tagged "Petyr Baelish/Catelyn Tully Stark" (I encounter this issue more on AO3 than anywhere else, really), only for it either be an ancillary detail of the story, straight up nonconsensual, or an attempt by a butthurt ficwriter to punish two characters that so many people in the fandom seem to, at best, grievously misunderstand. Mistagging has caused me many an hour of eventual disappointment and cost me many a precious hour of my life that I will never get back.

But, even after wading chin-deep in all the shit this fandom has to offer, I have found gold. I'm here to prove it exists, if you only know where to look.

But Creature, what makes a fic good? How do you ascribe worth to something so subjective?

I've been told I'm a harsh critic, but this is less about literary merit than it is assessing quality as it pertains to the ship. Of course, many of these DO have some kind of literary merit, or, at least, are enjoyable to read. I grade a fic based on the following rubric, let's call it the Four Commandments of Petelyn Fic :

any acts of a sexual nature MUST - and I cannot stress this enough - be consensual. Do what you do, write what you write - I'm not here to police anyone's work. But don't put a pairing in the ship tag if anything that would earn it that slash between the characters' names is happening against either party's will. I simply will not read it. 

Petyr and Catelyn must have AT LEAST 2 face-to-face, one-on-one conversations. If you're going to use that damn slash, it doesn't have to be the principal element of the story, but it better feature in the foreground of the story, at least. It cannot just be a background detail that's mentioned once, off-handedly, at the end of a 63 chapter fic (true story, y'all). Better yet, it should have significant bearing on the plot, not unlike the way the relationship between the two does in canon - but that's a tall order, apparently. 

I alluded to this earlier. As an extensions of the first tenet - I do not want to feel the heat of the writer's hatred for the two characters through the story. So, SO often will people throw this pairing into some kind of canon divergent something or another and thrust them into each other's arms as a punishment for their Crimes in canon. Cat is Big Mean to Jon, so she gets the boot from Ned and ends up with Caricature of Petyr Who Lacks Any And All Nuance That Made The Character Interesting In The First Place to pay for Her Sins. I'm reading a fic because I like the characters, and I like the idea of them together (or, in many a case, him pining after her), not to stand beside someone on their moral high ground as they punish the two with each other. Again, not here to police anyone's work, so if you hate them both and want to take them to task by forcing them into some kind of relationship, be my guest! But don't expect to find your fic listed here. 

I have my own personal preferences (submissive Petyr, as I am not attracted to dominant men and genuinely don't think he would fill the dominant role in this relationship; I'll always prefer to read something requited, but that's even rarer a find; I'm not entirely crazy about AUs but can make exceptions, etc.) but I am trying to keep this as objective as possible. This list includes a pretty wide range of stuff, all of which I've enjoyed enough to reread at least once.

This may all seem like it goes without saying, but you'd be surprised. 

My credentials? A degree in TV and Film. I've read the books, and have studied the first three seasons of Thrones so closely that if I close my eyes I can watch full scenes in my head. I've been writing fic, fiction, television, and short films for 12 years, and reading and watching for nearly twice as long. And, most importantly, I'm a feral goblin who is batshit insane over these two. 

This list features fic from every corner of the internet - AO3, Tumblr, Live Journal. I unfortunately have been very hard-pressed to find anything that suits my fancy on FF.net, but if anybody has any recommendations (in line with the above), I intend for this list to be a living document.

And no, before anyone asks, I do NOT ship Petyr and Sansa. Respectfully, please keep that far the fuck away from me.

So, without further ado, here's a list of a very picky Petyr x Catelyn girlie's favorite fics.

An EXCELLENT starter kit. This is a three-part series that's currently updating. There are other things going on outside of them, but the relationship is essential to the story, thanks to the Cat POV chapters. This was the gateway drug for me way back when I still felt shame for shipping these two, and I love it still to this day. I love this series so much that, when I received the update notification for a particular Catelyn chapter in the middle of my college graduation, I dropped everything to read it. It moves fast, the political landscape is explored thoroughly, the divergence from canon is both plausible and interesting, and if you're not into smut, it's pretty fade-to-black.

Another one I read just after I'd taken the plunge down the rabbit hole. This is a notable exception to my general aversion to AUs - it works here, the real-world transpositions are not only believable, but clever! It features some pretty complex and subversive relationships between the characters; the PxC is certainly a critical, foreground element, but not always in the most immediately obvious way. Definitely had me Giggling and Kicking My Feet throughout. Refreshing is certainly a word. Obligatory smut advisory on this one, though.

Yes, I know, but hear me out. If you want to sample the best of the PxC wares the internet has to offer, you're gonna have to get down and dirty with Google's 'translate website' feature. This one is WORTH IT. I still tear up every time I read this. I have a particular soft spot for it because it reminds me of a short film I wrote/directed in college about my own experience with rejection and first love.

I believe this one is locked (meaning it requires an AO3 account to access), but making an account is both free and worth it. Yes, I know Winds is never coming out, but in my own delulu canon, this is it, this is the book. End series. Roll credits. 

Short as hell, you get the idea, but still fade-to-black if smut isn't your thing. It's hard to find good, dirty fic for this pairing. I do not currently have the mental bandwidth to be the change I wish to see in the world, but I will gladly support anyone with more patience than I.

petyr thinks he just lusting after cat but after ned nearly kills him that one time he realizes that his ideal situation is sandwiched between ned and cat and preferably on a bed somewhere but he’ll take what he can get.

Petyr finally admit that he is indeed a damn mega submissive and a mega simp who need TWO dominants to take care of him and makes him happy AKA THREESOME COULD SAVE THE ENTIRE STARK FAMILY. HE KEEP NED ON THE THRONE AND CAT ALIVE

I would love to write a fic where Cat already has a kid(s) and meets Ned (possibly with kids as well). And I want Cats ex-husband to suck.

So my choice for that role would be Petyr of course, but I just can't get myself to think of a scenario where Cat would actually be with Petyr.
