I have the asoiaf leather cloth box set! They're all a little plain ( just solid colors), but beautifully engraved on the cover and spine, and I love the weight and feel of them. Plus, they're pocket sized which I just think is fun (maybe not for people who have trouble reading small print though)! My only issue is that the text is printed on this very thin and delicate Bible paper so I have to be careful not to turn the pages too quickly. I had no idea about the Japanese covers though ohhh my god they are SO gorgeous... Samwell Tarly the light of my life <3

oh my god i LOVE this set!!! i actually had my eye on one of these when i was trying to get a physical copy of clash, but the only one i could find on ebay at the time had affc missing from it

it's funny you mention that they're a bit small and could be hard to read because that was the biggest factor in my deciding not to get them. i like the big editions (both hard and softcover) because the little ones you see around most commonly i find impossible to read. they're just too small to open comfortably and the type is too small for me to read comfortably. i was surprised at how small these editions were because they look like such fancy, high-end prints. like i would have expected that they would make them huge.

i ended up getting a large hardcover copy of acok that was missing the dust jacket, which is a bit of a shame because i love the dust jacket for the first american edition:

it features some typography i really like, a dorky ass cell shaded crown, and this beautiful but sort of nonsensical painting by Stephen Youll:

Youll did art for agot, acok, asos, and an unused piece for affc. He also did a bunch of art for the Dune series!

re: the new covers

i'm not a fan of these guys because to me they feel like the publishers trying to get acotar/fifth wing fans to pick up the series. and while of course it is possible to enjoy modern romantasy AND asoiaf, i think purposefully trying to brand asoiaf as similar to/appealing to contemporary romantasy series is dishonest. and kinda dumb. and they also to me don't feel like good representations of the books. and just imo i don't care for this art style. lots of things to hate, here, for me...

but i like them much more than the set we had before (on the right) which are just dull and dated (though i think the adwd cover is sort of sick tbh)

i REALLY love the japanese covers for the series. they're visually striking, portray the characters well, and have a sense of majesty and scale to them that i think really really honors the series. my favs are sam and dany:

^ this dany especially i really adore. her babies look so good and the piece has such an interesting aesthetic balance between like 80s dark fantasy and 2000s manga cover art.

i also really really love the original uk covers. soooooo 90s sff 💕 very evocative of the series imo. they're my favorite, i think, for how they represent the work in both style and subject matter.

also, the brazilian covers are truly astounding, but imo don't work great as book covers. they feel more like posters, to me. i have to highlight them, though, because they're just too beautiful not to do so.
