Reading stories and making memories 🖤 I had a great time at Petoskey's sidewalk sale yesterday. Thanks to @northgoods I was able to meet quite a few magical humans AND was able to share one of my favorite stories with them. Who DOESN'T love the story of "Tallulah: Mermaid of the Great Lakes?!" 💜 . Although I'm back in Lake Michigan now, you can still find Tallulah's story, Petoskey Stones and some beautiful Michigan Made treasures at NorthGoods in Petoskey. 🧜🏼‍♀️💎💫 . Thank you once again to EVERYONE who came to visit yesterday. I'm blowing bubble kisses into the waves for you as we speak! . Who here has ever seen a Petoskey Stone, by the way? . Petoskey Stone Great Lakes Sticker THE LEGEND OF PETOSKEY The Petoskey stone was named after Chief Pet-O-Sega who was an Ottawa Indian Chief. There was a whole city in northern Michigan that was named after him and it is known as Petoskey, Michigan. The stones are commonly found on beaches and in sand dunes along Lake Michigan. Chief Petosegay was the child of a descendant of a French nobleman and fur trader, Antoine Carre, and an Ottawa princess. Petosegay, meaning “rising sun”, “rays of dawn” or “sunbeams of promise,” was named after the rays of the sun that fell upon his newborn face. In keeping with his promising name, Petosegay was a wealthy fur trader who gained much land and acclaim for himself and his tribe. He was remarked upon to have a striking and appealing appearance and spoke English very well. He married another Ottawa, and together they had two daughters and eight sons. In the summer of 1873, a few years before the chief’s passing, a city began on his land along Little Traverse Bay. The settlers christened the newborn city Petoskey, an anglicized form of Petosegay.
