Petoskey stone is a rock and a fossil, often pebble-shaped, that is composed of a fossilized rugose coral. These stones are unique to the Michigan area, particularly around the city of Petoskey, which is how they got their name. They are commonly found along the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. Windwalker
As I understand it, windsurfing is when the board stays on the surface of the water; its offshoot, windfoiling - as seen here - is when the board goes airborne, anchored only by a hydrofoil fin that protrudes from the bottom of the board.
On Tuesday we were in Petoskey and took a walk on the pier that juts out into Little Traverse Bay. A cool, robust wind kept most people off the pier, but the weather was custom-made for taking a flier in the bay.
Windsurfing, the Internet tells me, emerged in the 1960s from California's aerospace and surf culture. It became an Olympic sport in 1984.

When I was obsessed with the ACOTAR series—not that I don't still absolutely adore the series—I created a desktop wallpaper before I decided I wanted to have an organizer as my background
And then I also tried to make some cute phone backgrounds:
Which I ended up not using because I decided to go a different aesthetic which changes depending on my mood that day lol:
Or…
I took those three photos btw on a trip up to the Upper Peninsula in Michigan. Highly recommend if you like beaches (but not sandy ones), walking, and nature

Found a Petoskey Stone in our yard yesterday! Not a usual place for such a find but I'll take it. Petoskey Stones are fossils of six-sided rugose coral. They are formed by glaciers picking them up from the bedrock and grinding them smooth. Later they were deposited along mostly the northwestern area of Michigan's lower peninsula. ~ Matteo

Pretty sure it's not flowers but still very cool, coral probably? Reminds me of petosky stones except the lines go all the way to the center here and the divisions are a bit wider I think? Petosky stones usually have more little "petals" in each "flower" and they are generally thinner. Maybe related species?
Agate with flower fossils.

More Michigan hidden gems coming right up. This is Rockport State Park, a massive rock quarry running along the shore of Lake Huron and a great place to search for Petoskey Stones. If you didn’t already know this, Petoskey Stones are pieces of fossilized coral. You may be wondering what that’s doing in Michigan. It’s because this state was a tropical sea during the Silurian Period more than 400 million years ago. Why couldn’t it have stayed like that? I’m getting off topic, here are some pictures of the rock quarry.
It was one hell of a hike, but serene and pretty. Our luck with Petoskey Stones wasn’t the greatest, but maybe you’ll find some if you’re looking. This is another time where I wish I had taken some more pictures. There were these crazy rock hills that you could climb. It was awesome.

The coolest of cool towns
In the context of the sizzling summer of '23, Pellston's moniker - "Ice Box of the Nation" - doesn't seem so bad. It almost sounds refreshing.
We drove through the northern-Michigan village Wednesday on our way to Petoskey.
In fact, Pellston doesn’t even crack the list of the top 10 coldest U.S. cities; it falls behind places like Fairbanks, Grand Forks, Duluth, International Falls and St. Cloud.
But one day in 1933 Pellston recorded a low temperature of minus-53 degrees F. So, why get defensive about it ...? The folks of Pellston took the "Ice Box" title and made it cool.

Petoskey stones: more than a souvenir
As a lot of you head to the beaches seeking Michigan's state stone, I thought it was an excellent time to re-share this essay.
Petoskey Stone by Christopher Cerk About 20 years ago, Rose Petoskey shared this story about her name. As a lot of you head to the beaches seeking Michigan’s state stone, I thought it was an excellent time to re-share this essay from Rose about her name and the importance of names in Native culture: My name is Noozeen (Rose) Nimkiins (Little Thunder) Petoskey (Rising Sun) and I am…
