Book Log 2023 - #15 Amadeus by Peter Schaffer

Mozart [To Salieri]: That's our job! That's our job, we composers: to combine the inner minds of him and him and him, and her and her - the thoughts of chambermaids and Court Composers - and turn the audience into God.

[Pause. Salieri slares at him fascinated. Embarrassed, Mozart blows a raspberry and giggles.]

Mozart is such an annoying character in the beginning, but he really grew on me. Salieri, on the other hand, very much did not. It's one thing to be jealous and feel like God has forsaken you, but Mozart didn't deserve to be treated like that. The fact that Salieri doesn't get what he wants in the end (fame and recognition) doesn't make me feel any better at all. Just... be bitter about in private and leave other people alone, no need to make anyone suffer because you're not the big musical genius you wanted to be. This play obviously isn't autobiographical and makes no claim to being a truthful portrayal of Mozart's life, but that didn't keep my heart for breaking for the character. Aside from that, it was a pretty quick and easy read.

They could totally bring Nicolas in on the Amadeus parallels too, as Nicki, like Salieri envies Lestat’s natural talent as a mortal actor & knows that he’ll be a famous actor - with his charisma & his light! And Lestat, rather naively, akin to Mozart, sees no true envy or malice in Nicolas’ feelings. He just feels sad for Nicki & believes he can succeeed, while also he remembers how his Mother told him that Nicolas did start learning violin too old to ever be a great violinist. Oh yes.

And since I adore Amadeus - both film & it is my favourite play ever in the adaptation I saw on stage OH MY WORD I WISH I HAD A TIME MACHINE SO I COULD WATCH IT ONCE MORE!!! So if they wanna parallel Amadeus five trillion ways, that is ALL FABULOUS with me! We are slightly hampered though with the fact that actual Mozart taught Nicolas to play violin in Anne’s books…

BUT I’m just saying that in the play, Mozart even goes to the ball at the end of act one as Harlequin!!!!!!!!!

I’m also saying that Mozart died aged 35 & Lestat is made at 34… and their eras are mere fragments of years out (Mozart: 1756-1791; Lestat as a mortal: 1760-1794.)

Also, isn’t this speech of Mozart’s something Lestat might say?

"Look at us! Four gaping mouths. What a perfect quartet! I'd love to write it - just this second of time, this now, as you are! Herr Chamberlain thinking: "Impertinent Mozart. I must speak to the Emperor at once!" Herr Prefect thinking: "Ignorant Mozart. Debasing opera with his vulgarity!" Herr Court Composer thinking: "German Mozart. What can he finally know about music?" And Mozart himself, in the middle thinking: "I'm just a good fellow. Why do they all disapprove of me?"

That's why opera is important, Baron. Because it's realer than any play! A dramatic poet would have to put all those thoughts down one after another to represent this second of time. The composer can put them all down at once- and still make us hear each one of them.

Astonishing device: a vocal quartet! I tell you I want to write a finale lasting half an hour! A quartet becoming a quintet becoming a sextet becoming a septet- an octet- a nonet! On and on, wider and wider- all sounds multiplying and rising together- and the Together making a sound entirely new! ...I bet you that's how God hears the world. Millions of sounds ascending at once and mixing in His ear to become an unending music. Unimaginable to us! That's our job! That's our job! , we composers: to combine the inner minds of him and him and him and her and her- the thoughts of chambermaids and court composers- and turn the audience into God.

reading pushkin’s “mozart and salieri” and slowly losing my mind. salieri is like mozart i am in love with you. i am your dog. i am your prophet, and you are a god. i despise myself every time you touch the piano in my presence because i know i am not worthy of the divinity you will produce, and yet i crave it like i’ve craved nothing else. what are you. what am i to you. and mozart’s like haha you’re sweet, and then he goes offstage and salieri turns to the audience and says I Need To Kill That Guy. this is how the play opens btw

During the opening number, 'Detroit Rock City', Ace touched the metal railing on the stage left staircase, which was ungrounded. He was nearly electrocuted. "When Frehley touched the railing to help himself come down, he completed an electrical circuit with his guitar and was unable to move. He finally fell several feet to the stage floor but was miraculously unhurt. " (Charles M. Young, Rolling Stone Magazine).

The platform was next to Peter’s drum set, and his drum tech Chuck Elias was well positioned and saw what was happening. “It happened very fast,” he later said, “right at the beginning of the show and basically right above my head. Ace was standing on top of the stairs. I saw him grabbing the rail and not being able to move, and then eventually hitting the ground. We were up there instantly, but he was stunned more than anything else, which was lucky because it could have been life-threatening.”

The show was promptly stopped as Frehley was carried back to the wardrobe by the crew. After resting for a bit, Frehley felt better. Declining further medical assistance, he told the others that the was fine to go through with the show. Everything got reset, and after a 30-minute delay, KIϟϟ restarted the show from the top.

Ace later said he played even though he had no feeling in his hands : "I knew it for an instant and then I blacked out. I woke up behind the amplifiers, I said, 'I can’t play.' Then the fans started chanting my name and I finished the show. But I had no feeling in my hands. I don’t know how I even did it. I guess it was all adrenaline."

The incident led to the band using radio mics to free themselves from completing electrical circuits and remove cables as hindrances during their performances. Within months New York based company Ken Schaffer Group, Inc. had seen a massive increase in acts moving to their wireless Schaffer-Vega Diversity System.

Gene also set his hair on fire during this show.

i mean like

do you imagine tom peter when you’re writing? andrew? toby? do you imagine james franco for harry? or does it change depending on what you’re writing? etc so on and so forth

!!!! okay so, short answer: it kind of depends? like i have the same BASIC idea of the type of appearance each character has, but it kinda varies (i.e. sometimes i write harry with green eyes, sometimes with blue eyes, that kinda thing, you know?) but for the most part, the most accurate like actor representations that kinda capture what i picture is:

tom for peter, unless it’s not mcu-based, in which case it changes (i have two parksborn one shots, both of which it’s andrew)

ty for harley but also like. to the left. like i picture basically ty but brighter blond hair that’s kinda wavy/curly? but basically just ty

mj i just think zendaya bc i pretty much only write michelle jones, not mary jane, but if i ever DO write mary jane then i’d probably base her appearance off of like. like season 3 teen wolf era holland roden aka lydia marten. actually no now that i’ve said that it feels wrong lmao. maybe sadie sink ? but that’s only mary jane, for mj aka michelle jones it’s definitely zendaya

ned is for sure jacob in my head. like he’s ned. i cannot picture another person as ned. jacob is ned.

flash it’s pretty much just mcu flash so tony revelori. except i have a couple drafts for some tasm spiderflash fics in which case i picture tasm flash.

for harry, i mostly just picture like. love simon era nick robinson. he has hazel eyes so his appearance feels fitting for when i write him with blue eyes OR green eyes. but again, if it’s task based then i picture tasm harry aka dane dahaan. i haven’t written for the raimi verse but if i did i would probably go with james franco even though fuck that guy. but since most of my fics are mcu based, for all of those (including tbaf and hb) i picture nick robinson.

gwen is hunter schaffer like i just. that’s gwen! that’s gwen. if mcu at any point brings gwen into the picture i desperately need hunter to play her. though emma meyers is a close second, aka enid from wednesday, i think she could capture gwen’s energy really well, but appearance wise i just want hunter to play her so bad please for the love of god she would NAIL gwen’s character in every single way

i haven’t included betty in many fics but again just mcu betty aka angourie rice (WHO IS STARRING IN THE NEW MEAN GIRLS THE MUSICAL MOVIE AND I AM SO VERY EXCITED ABOUT IT!!!!)

any other characters i write are almost always mcu based so i just picture the actors that play the character haha

Luke and Carrie's Bad Rapport Episode #143: 20 YEARS of Friendship!

The first two 15-minute segments of this episode were recorded in June 2023 when Carrie and Alexann were visiting Luke in Burbank, and features them and the Bad Rapport debut of Luke’s new roommate, Santana Maynard! The next 5 segments after that were recorded in July 2023, and featured Carrie talking about travel woes, Luke talking about getting high on the 4th of July, and we both review “Peacemaker” Season 1 and the first 7 episodes of the anime “Komi Can’t Communicate”. At that point (months before the SAG/AFTRA strike, which we both support), I was supposed to have finished editing and posting the episode. Well, real life got in the way as it always does, which kept me from editing the episode for 3 months until after FuMPFeST 2023 ended.

Carrie pointed out that we were closing in on October 25th, 2023, which is the 20th Anniversary of the day Carrie and I met. Ten years ago we did a whole huge special episode recapping the first ten years of our friendship (Episode #93). So we figured it made sense for us to record a couple more segments having an unprepared (my fault) conversation about some of the highlights of what she and I have been doing together and separately over the past 10 years to commemorate two decades Carrie interrupting Luke and Luke belching on the mic to annoy Carrie. So that’s what we did. You’re welcome, I guess?
