On Monday I went to a memorial service for poor Jonathan Lieberson. He finally, at forty, lost his fight against AIDS. It's another tragic culling of a man so many thought was special. His memorial reflected it. In front of me was a freshly face-lifted Jackie O in a white schoolgirl shirt and black skirt, along with the Duchins, Brooke Astor, Richard Avedon, John Gregory Dunne and Joan Didion, Susan Sontag, the actor Peter Eyre, Diane von Furstenberg, etc. etc. And of course a stricken Bob Silvers of The New York Review of Books, who always saw Jonathan as his successor. It was Bob who choreographed the short tributes by the Nobel laureate Torsten Wiesel, Shelley Wanger, Elizabeth Hardwick, Jason Epstein, and Brooke Astor. As at all memorial services, the most interesting things were what was unsaid. How beneath the array of speakers' claims for his talents as a philosopher, editor, and critic, 'his essay on Wagner that could stand next to Shaw's', Jonathan was ultimately a thwarted soul, his verbal brilliance undermined by his incapacitating self-hatred that perhaps came from a distaste for his own homosexuality, which he always kept implacably hidden. It's tragic that he felt such shame. He never uttered the word 'AIDS' to anyone, and the obituary said 'cardiac arrest'. In the end it's the bitterest irony that he had a slow, agonizing, and public death that finally proclaimed to everyone what he had kept hidden for so long.

It was 15 years ago today—Lorraine Hunt Lieberson's recording of her husband Peter Lieberson's Neruda Songs was released on Nonesuch, not long after her untimely passing. The composer had written the work, based on Pablo Neruda's poems, for his wife. You can hear the album, the Grammy winner for Best Classical Vocal Performance, recorded in concert with Boston Symphony Orchestra, here.

Teen Play Their Final Show as a Band at Music Hall of Williamsburg
Teen – Music Hall of Williamsburg – October 30, 2019
“Thanks everyone, we’re Teen. We were Teen?” said Teen singer Kristina “Teeny” Lieberson last night at Music Hall of Williamsburg to an audience of friends and fans, questioning her verb tenses and just three songs away from wrapping up the band’s final concert ever. For a band that is (was?) comprised of three siblings, Kristina, Katherine and Lizzie Lieberson, Teen’s almost 10-year run is a pretty remarkable feat. “My mother wanted me to say this, should I even say it? We’d like to dedicate this song to our original producer, the producer … of children, our mom,” said Kristina, groaning her way through the not-bad dad joke about moms. They more seriously dedicated the final song to their father, the late classical composer Peter Lieberson.
But given the somberness of the occasion, the bulk of the performance felt more celebratory than sad, with the band fleshing out songs from Teen’s catalog with the help of many friends adding accompaniments, including trumpet, saxophone and backup singing. The added oomph brought Teen’s pop melodies to maximalist extremes. “Another Man’s Woman” closed out with horns blaring, keyboards circling and all three sisters harmonizing the repeated chorus. “It’s our last fucking show, we can do what the fuck we want,” joked Kristina, restarting the Prince-y tune “Putney” after fighting with the finicky backing track, ultimately prevailing without it. “Tokyo” was a favorite of the night, complete with its harmonies, pleasant surprises of shifting rhythms, fuzzy keyboard melodies coming from all directions and backing vocals filling out the bliss blitz. “Pretend,” the closing number off their latest album, Good Fruit, swung the other direction, a sparse trasck carried by Katherine Lieberson’s delicate vocals.
“Free Time” brought back a fast pace, the poppy jam featuring a maelstrom of ’80s-era keyboard tones and Kristina theatrically pantomiming her way through the lyrics. “Better,” Teen’s final song as a band, sounded like a victory lap with its triumphant chorus of “I’ll do it better than anybody else.” “It’s such a joy to play music with people you love,” said Kristina, referring to band members both past and present over the group’s tenure. The night ended with “Roses & Wine,” which Kristina wrote before Teen were officially a band. “Will you be missed when you’re gone?” the song asks. With the band now a day into retirement, the answer here is already yes. —Dan Rickershauser | @D4nRicks

Clockwork Orange letter, signed by Robert Fraser, 1967-68
This item was up for auction at Christie's in 2014. Robert Fraser signed as Strawberry "Bob", which was Keith Richards' nickname for him, apparently due to his penchant for pink suits.
Tumblr media
Christie's Description: "A rare signed petition protesting against the selection of David Hemmings over Mick Jagger for the lead role of Alex in A Clockwork Orange, circa 1967-1968, the five line typescript document on black bordered mourning paper addressed to screenwriter Terry Southern, telling him: We, The Undersigned, Do Hereby Protest With Extreme Vehemence As Well As Shattered Illusions (in You) The Preference Of Devid Hemmings Above ***** Mick Jagger ***** In The Role Of Alex In 'The Clockwork Orange, the document signed in black felt pen at the foot by Paul McCartney, George Harrison, John Lennon and Ringo Starr, the four Beatles' signatures above that of Anita Pallenberg, signed as Anita ("the heater") [Pallenberg's signature in ballpoint pen faded] and close to Donald Cammell's signature Don the Drom and his caricature of a camel; fourteen other signatures on the document include: Peter Blake, Jann Blake, Marianne Faithfull, James Fox, Robert Fraser who inscribed a comment HEAR! HEAR! and signed as Strawberry "Bob", David Cammell, Sandy Lieberson and Christian Marquard, 1p. -- 13x7in. (33x17.9cm.)"
Christie's Essay: "According to screenwriter Terry Southern it was photographer Michael Cooper who first interested him in Anthony Burgess' futuristic novel A Clockwork Orange. It was also Cooper who was behind the petition in this lot. Southern said ...Michael turned me onto 'A Clockwork Orange' and so I took an option on the book and was going to write a screenplay. Then David Hemmings came out with 'Blow Up' and the agency said "We'll package this thing with David Hemmings because he's hot". Michael [Cooper] just freaked out and said "Mick Jagger has got to play this part". He drew up a letter edged in black which said: "We the undersigned hereby insist that Mick Jagger play the part". It was signed by all the Beatles, Marianne Faithfull and Robert Fraser...
Terry Southern's screenplay adaptation of Burgess' novel was rejected by the British Board of Film Censors in May 1967, the board declared that: ..any film of this script would not be shown in Britain.. It was at this point that Paramount, the studio backing Southern pulled out, and Southern gave the book to Kubrick who just put [the book] to one side and forgot about it for a year and a half....
Andrew Loog Oldham, the Rolling Stones' manager in the mid-sixties, was also keen to make a film of Burgess' book with the Stones playing the violent quartet led by the hero Alex, who was to be played by Mick Jagger. In his book The Stanley Kubrick Companion, author James Howard records that at one point, Andy Warhol and David Bailey co-owned the screen rights to the book [presumably Warhol and Bailey's interest in it post-dated that of Paramount and Southern], and had wanted to use the Rolling Stones.... a project which folded when the group reportedly 'demanded exhorbitant fees' and the rights were subsequently allowed to lapse. Stanley Kubrick, who had been given a copy of the book by Terry Southern during the filming of 2001: A Space Odyssey in 1967, eventually took the project on, but was put off by...the reputation of decadence that Jagger already carried...and opted instead for Malcolm McDowell whose dynamic acting debut in Lindsay Anderson's 1968 film If... had impressed him.
The inclusion of so many names on this petition also associated with the film Performance suggest that its date is closer to 1968 when work first began on the film. Donald Cammell directed Performance with Nicolas Roeg and is also credited as the screenwriter. James Fox played one of the leading roles - Chas Devlin, and Anita Pallenberg played Pherber. Sandy Lieberson is credited as the film's producer. A number of those who have signed the document are also linked with another momentous artistic production of the late 1960s, The Beatles album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band released in 1967. The Beatles' and Stones' mutual friend, art gallery owner Robert Fraser signed the petition, as did Peter Blake, designer of the ground-breaking Sgt. Pepper album cover, who was introduced to Epstein and EMI by Fraser. Photographer Michael Cooper, who apparently devised the petition, also shot the Sgt. Pepper album cover."
Terry Southern, Michael Cooper, and many of the other signers were good friends of Fraser.

So, this act caught me by complete surprise. I actually do a little (emphasis on little) research on these musical entries before I post them, and I had never actually heard of TEEN until a few weeks ago when this tune popped up randomly for me on Soundcloud. Algorithms are an interesting thing; sometimes they recommend things that are just right for you based on your listening/viewing history... other times they fail miserably. In this case I was connected to an all-woman band, and wouldn’t ya know it, I was subconsciously looking for an all-woman band to post this very week. Unfortunately, this is also a group with a very limited history, and they seem to have formed and fell apart all within the span of just about decade. The core of the band is comprised of three sisters who are all the daughters of American classical composer Peter Lieberson. Each having the blood of a virtuoso, they decided to start recording together in 2010, and released this track, Electric, along with their first full album in 2012, In Limbo. While their sound appears to change on every album they’ve released up until 2019, the music they create tends to gravitate around lo-fi, psychedelia and synth noises punctuated by skilled guitar and drum work. They’re a good example of what happens when familial bonds create chemistry rather than infighting, because, as we all know blood can be hard to work with all the time. Their final show was on 10/30/2019 in Brooklyn, NY, and near as I can figure they all just suffered from burn out. But their tunes are eternal, so smash play and enjoy some rare music created by a defunct, but clearly very unique group of sisters who just wanted to create projects together for a little while.

It was 20 years ago today: composer John Adams's nativity oratorio El Niño was released on Nonesuch. You can hear it here.
"Adams's most powerful and affecting and sublimely assured music." —Los Angeles Times
The recording, made during the world premiere performances at Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, features singers Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, Dawn Upshaw, and Willard White. The libretto was compiled by Adams and his longtime collaborator Peter Sellars from pre-Christian and modern texts in English, Latin, and Spanish.

Georg Friedrich Händel: 'As with rosy' Irene's recitative and aria from "Theodora" interpreted by Lorraine Hunt Lieberson (comp. 1750; video perf. 1996). Production by Peter Sellars for Glyndebourne. Conducted by William Christie. Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment . From the collection of Gustavo Lanfranchi at youtube.
Ah! Whither should we fly, or fly from whom? The Lord is still the same, today, for ever, And his protection here, and everywhere. Though gath'ring round our destin'd heads The storm now thickens, and looks big with fate, Still shall thy servants wait on Thee, O Lord, And in thy saving mercy put their trust.
As with rosy steps the morn, Advancing, drives the shades of night, So from virtuous toil well-borne, Raise Thou our hopes of endless light. Triumphant saviour, Lord of day, Thou art the life, the light, the way! As with rosy steps the morn...
