In Pitman’s article I can relate to it in the sense that just recently i have succumbed to using my laptop for almost anything. Ever since elementary school taking notes in my notebook was the only way teachers taught and I liked it. I as well practiced in remediation, I made my own key at the first page of my notebook, then i continued to use abbreviations key phrases, and my highlighter were my best friend. Taking handwritten notes gives me this satisfaction that my laptop doesn’t. I love to look at my page and see the colorful words and bolded and underlined letters pop out at me, I feel more accomplished and I feel like i have learned more. I would have never thought that this could be used for fiction writing, but Pitman shows multiple similarities between the two.

Inside Facebook’s (Totally Insane, Unintentionally Gigantic, Hyperpartisan) Political-Media Machine
Recently I just began using Facebook, I had an account but I rarely got on. I was never really attracted to the idea of it, but since joining multiple clubs I see myself constantly scrolling through my feed. Herrman is spot-on with what a Facebook feed looks like he says, “A photo of a close friend’s child. An automatically generated slide show commemorating six years of friendship between two acquaintances… And then: A family member who loves politics asking, “Is this really who we want to be president?” (Herrman). Having one of the oddest elections just behind us there has been an absurd amount of posts about Hillary and Trump. I completely agree with Herrman as he says that Facebook is unintentional about being a political media machine. For the past year I have seen articles about Trump saying things that Hitler said during his rallies and articles about how Hillary is a terrorist. When I clicked on those articles the sources were either someone’s uneducated opinion about the candidate or a site that has a sole purpose for clickbait. Having this being my first time voting I wanted to make sure I was confident in my choice, and being educated in both candidates, so I read these articles (I read credible ones too don’t worry). These ridiculous articles did stick with me though, my aunt carol and my weird classmates ranted about their opinions and yet I took them into consideration. I think society today isn’t reading the news carefully and finding multiple sources about politics anymore, we rely on our relatives who love politics and co-workers to rant about their opinions so we can form our own.

Understanding Language and Culture with Cultural Historical Activity Theory – Kostecki
I relate to the author in the way that I am not used to looking at multiple types of genres of writing. All the papers I wrote where the formulaic five paragraph essays. I would have no idea that a billboard advertisement or a business email could ever be considered a genre of writing. The genres I was familiar with where the ones in the library they use to section off books. The way Kostecki outlines what he is going to write about, “Next I will discuss the seven aspects of CHAT in more detail and then follow with a flowchart and a detailed example” this reminds me of the formulaic type of writing I am used to, the instant I read that I was relieved. I embarrassingly admit that I was relieved because seeing that type of writing I felt comfortable and I knew I wouldn’t have to really try and soak in the information; I could just read it and not have to go back and reread and try to make sense of the text. The way he writes is so clear and blunt that it almost is like as if he is writing a speech. Me being the lazy student I am because it was an easier read than most articles I have read.

How I Lrnd 2 Txt
Before this class I thought of genres as fiction, mystery, or non-fiction. I never thought a genre could be something like a flyer or a business letter or texting. Texting is such an interesting genre to me because it is such a modern one. She discusses the struggle of teaching her mom how to text as she says, “I’ve been attempting to teach my mother the art of texting for years, I’ve even gone so far as to print off a list of common texting acronyms.” As I mentioned before the genre of texting is so new that even our parents who are only thirty years older than us do not understand this genre. I think it is such an interesting thing that with new technology booming in the last couple decades a new genre of texting and even new vernacular has emerged. I have heard by younger siblings use the phrases “lol” and “hashtag”. I’ve noticed that now people will not only type these abbreviations but they will also use them in everyday language. This new genre has certainly opened up a whole new world to language, but it has also caused some problems. I have heard professors tell me over and over again that if we use texting lingo in an email to them that they will not respond. The texting genre has come off as lazy of unprofessional so professors have been making their point that they do not want to see any type of that language when the students are communicating via email. I am grateful that I have been able to learn that genres are not just fiction or non-fiction but they are so much more.

The Information that I Sought Out: A Genre Study of the Artist Statement.
Her purpose of this article is to study and analyze the genre of artist statements. Much like our project, she analyzes the purpose conventions and reason for artist statements she mentions in the text, “Describes the artist statement as “part opportunity and part obligation” in essence what he is saying artist statement is not only an obligation as an artist but also an opportunity; an opportunity to justify, legitimize, provide clarity, prove worthiness or whatever the artist would like to give insight to”. This excerpt from the text is the author analyzing the purpose and reasoning for artist’s statement. Her purpose is much like how mine will be in my unit one project. We both will be analyzing a genre hers being artist statements and mine will be sorority paddles. This article has been extremely helpful to me, this has been a great example of how my project should look. I will be referring to this piece throughout my unit one project. I have never thought of interviewing people for a type of research, and now seeing that she did that I might use that as a type of research my my project.
