I've started a class on US history ( particularly around the colonization ) and it's fascinating! Do you have any period you would recommend to look more into?
You picked an interesting time to ask me about US history, through absolutely no fault of your own! (I haven't studied US history since high school, and my AP US History teacher has spent the last 20 or so years in jail for, uh... having relationships with little boys that were 100% NOT OKAY. And I recently found out he's out of prison and has been attempting to track down some of the boys involved [who are all now in their 30s and 40s]. I only know because one is one of my old roommates, and he was dating my best friend, and... well. I saw his name on the list and was just like "okay, this has to be a parole violation of some sort. Also, dude, what the actual fuck?! Several of the boys you hurt later committed suicide. One was found dead by his little sister and her best friend. They were nine. Nine years old. You are a fucking monster. Jesus christ.")
Aside from that... I'm not super well-versed in US history as a whole, but I have enjoyed some books dealing with it, so okay if I mention those? I particularly loved A People's History of the United States (Howard Zinn) and Lies My Teacher Told Me (James Loewen), both of which were seminal in presenting less "whitewashed" versions of US history. I've also enjoyed in recent years The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson (about the disapora of Black Americans from the Southeast into the Midwest during the 20th century), The American West and Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, both by Dee Brown (classics of the expansion of settlers into the West in the 19th century, the "cowboy" years), and White Trash by Nancy Isenberg (looking at class in America). Other good, popular writers of US history: David McCullough, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Ron Chernow, Candice Millard. There's some awesome fiction that tackles US history in interesting ways - my favorites are A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (Betty Smith), The Little Friend (Donna Tartt), Forever (Pete Hamill), The Jungle (Upton Sinclair), and basically anything by Steinbeck.
I find the great migration periods particularly interesting, especially the Asian arrivals in the West in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Early Hollywood is fascinating. There's a wonderful book about it called Silent Stars by Jeanine Basinger. The US also has some honest really good classics in True Crime, especially Truman Capote's In Cold Blood and Norman Mailer's The Executioner's Song. (Truman Capote is also interesting in that he was a very good friend of Harper Lee, who wrote To Kill a Mockingbird.) There were some writers in the mid-20th century who took travel writing and turned it on its head: try Travels with Charley (Steinbeck again!), On the Road (Jack Kerouac - not my personal style, but I understand why it's an American classic!), and Roughing It (Mark Twain). (Honestly, all of Twain's stuff is great, and fucking hilarious. Twain and Wodehouse - in England - had no business being as brilliantly hilarious as they were.)
Also, a weirder rec?
Stephen King's 11/22/63.
Just trust me. And yes, it's that Stephen King.
Again: trust me.
(Other fictional creepiness built around or dealing with North American history [I say North American because I'm including Canada and Mexico]: Alma Katsu's The Hunger, Dan Simmons' The Terror, Silvia Moreno-Garcia's Mexican Gothic [and I just got her Velvet was the Night, but haven't read it yet!], Toni Morrison's Beloved, basically anything by Cormac McCarthy. [Content warning, some of these are a little stomach-churning to get through. Reader beware!] I've also recently been recommended S. Craig Zahler's Westerns, but haven't read them yet, so be warned there that he's the guy who wrote Bone Tomahawk! If you know... you know. If you don't... not recommended viewing while eating. 🤷‍♀️ And speaking of Westerns, Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove is absolutely wonderful. And not stomach-churning!)
Hope that helps! If there are any specific periods that catch your interest, I can dig into recommendations for further reading/watching. US history isn't always my personal cup of tea, but my mother's been writing books and articles about it for 30 years, so I can always ask for recs! 😁

This is a much larger movement than you understand. A few weeks ago, a group of Mexican patriots gathered in secret to draft a manifesto. It's been circulating among my people, published in papers your kind don't read. "El Plan de San Diego." Made the English-language papers, too. Probably did more to recruit people to the Law and Order League than anything else. It doesn't matter. Very soon, my people will rise up and take back our land.

If there’s one member of Streetlight that all of us can agree is an untouchable, criminally underrated, one of a kind musician, it’s our own longtime bassist extraordinaire, Mr. Peter McCullough. Often tucked away towards the back of the stage, quietly dancing all over his fretboard like a ballerina on methamphetamines, grown men have wept for the first time since childhood once they realize what he’s up to back there. The man is a duck in a pond, in that his body is calm and relaxed, while his fingers are often moving faster than most of our brains can fathom. Next time you come to a Streetlight show, pay attention to our man quietly working his magic, next to the drum set. Watch a song or two, or even the whole set, with him as your focus. It’ll be an entirely different show, and you will walk away from it with the same respect we have for him. All that said, here’s the news: Our Pete M. has put together a group of musicians and recorded a side project that you really should check out. It’s not Streetlight and it’s not anything similar to Streetlight, but we’re pretty sure many of you will get into the instrumental record as much as we have since he released it a few weeks ago. The project is called Sleeper Shell and it can be found on Apple, Spotify or any other streaming service. Check out their IG at @sleepershell And whatever you do, next time you see us pouring sweat and screaming our throats off onstage, take a look at Pete’s fingers. Yep. https://www.instagram.com/p/CXkoQKfMTW0/?utm_medium=tumblr

Thoughts: I devoured and adored the Charlotte Holmes series and am so sad that it is over. I miss my disaster children. 😭
Thanks to all of the TBR-related prompts on this year’s Popsugar Reading Challenge, I made it through a lot of books that have been on my TBR for a while. The book that was on there the longest was Conjure Wife. My favorite college professor gave it to me for my birthday long, long ago, but I just never read it and have been carrying it around ever since. It’s nice to have that one finally crossed off.
If the characters from This is How We Fly were on Reddit’s AITA, the response would be that everyone sucks here. A bunch of unpleasant people doing unpleasant things to each other mainly because they just don’t talk. The worst.

Hey! I am also attending the online con this weekend (or will be watching the recordings). How exactly did you find the free events/know which ones you are slotted to attend? I've only bought one panel (the secrets of Jace) and I'm worried that's all I have access to. I can't figure out how to navigate the site and the Whova app. They don't seemed to be linked at all. Any advice you have, I am open to!! Thank you. Also your fics are amazing! I read like all of them!!!
I’m not going to lie - I have no actual idea what is going on. I don’t like the app myself and it’s definitely weird to navigate. There’s a good chance if it’s chaotic and awful I’ll just... not do any of them in real time and just watch them later since I didn’t buy any specific ones/solo things/etc.  (I think I read that all except Matt’s will be recorded and if you have access to them you can watch them for a week after the con? So that’s nice at least.) As far as I know you need to have Zoom and the Whova app, and I think they’re posting links on the Whova Ap to the Zoom when the panels start?
That said, I had a friend who told me this is the list of the included panels (I think they’re all labeled ‘Bonus Panels’ on the app/agenda) Bonus Panel A: Fantastic Realms (Will Tudor, John Rakich, Ron Rauch, Stephanie Terzo, Amanda O’Leary) Bonus Panel B: Writing and Playing Wicked Women (Tessa Mossey, Anna Hopkins, Aisha Porter-Christie)  Bonus Panel C: The Legendary Makeup of Jonathan Morgenstern (Luke Baines, Brian Hui) Bonus Panel D: The Perfect Spaghetti Supper (Dominic Sherwood, Alan Van Sprang, Dough McCullough) Bonus Panel E: Breaking Down The City of Glass (Jack Yang, Sydney Meyer, Pete Binswanger) Bonus Panel F: All Hail The Queen (Kimberly-Sue Murray, Brian Hui, Stefanie Terzo, Philippe Thibault, John Rakich) Bonus Panel with Tessa Mossey & Alberto Rosende Bonus Panel: Epic Collaboration: 3.03 What Lies Beneath? The Making of Shadowhunters (Todd Slavkin, Darren Swimmer, Matt Hastings, Katherine McNamara) The Shadowhunters Legacy Auction (Todd Slavkin)
Sorry I’m not more help! And if anyone following me can be more help and knows more than me, which isn’t difficult to do at this point jfkldsjfklsd, please reply with some advice! xD

Today’s Fury
I am apparently the only one of my siblings (three sisters and a brother) who video called my Dad to wish him Happy Father’s Day today. The man is 88 years old and more or less trapped in an assisted living facility without company or visitors because of COVID. Yes, we all talked to him on Friday for the weekly Virtual Family Happy Hour, and yes, we all sent him gifts. (I sent him three big fat books by David McCullough, Erik Larson, and Mark Kurlansky, and he is tickled pink.) And yes, one sibling is a paramedic pulling down a 72-hour shift, and another is on a fishing vacation up north and probably without much cell service. The other two have no excuse whatsoever. Call the man to wish him Happy Father’s Day, for Pete’s sake.
This makes me really mad.

Storia Di Musica #78 - Joe Cocker , With A Little Help From My Friends, 1969

The Son (AMC) 2x09
Wow a big episode! A lot of things happened and were revealed. I’m all emotional on this show. OMG this crazy family legacy show. Anytime there’s a whole character lifelong story. I’m like sdlkfjslafjl :’(
I liked that Jeannie learned all the secrets and plans about life and it wasn’t one side is the right side either. Young Eli deciding to leave the Comanches after 4 years, to save them or so and yeah :( and his flashback with his wife :(. Then older Jeannie talking about Eli’s legacy*** while Ulysses(sp?) is around like ‘yo I’m part Garcia and McCullough and that ranch should be for me!’ Pete is standing his ground and yeah left his family to be with Maria. Standard Oil different guys found them and will help them out then. But like yeah does Pete know Jeannie wants to stay with him or something? Anyway, Pete does what’s best even though it sucks on both sides. Be with Maria but not with his kids. sldfjalj
Old Eli died from a bear attack and uh not lung cancer. adlkfjlak “to LIVE”. Young Eli left his Comanche family and also changed his last name Stevenson. So I wonder Eli learns more about his birth dad or kills him to make young Eli last of McCullough? idk maybe next ep will explain it.
I screencapped lot of pictures. vvvv
