De Tomaso P70 Spyder Prototype, 1965, by Fantuzzi. Powered by a Carroll Shelby supplied 475hp version of Ford's 289ci (4.7 litre) V8, Alejandro de Tomaso had originally planned the car as a mid-engined open-top grand tourer. Instead Shelby wanted to use the car in the United States Road Racing Championship and asked Pete Brock to work on the design with Fantizzi. However Shelby withdrew from the project to work on Ford's GT40 project. A second single seat prototype was built (the Sport 5000) specifically for racing. The second car made its debut in July 1966 in the Mugello Grand Prix round of the World Sportscar Championship; however, it retired on the opening lap and never raced again.

This one prototype was built in-house at the Venice Shelby-American plant here on Princeton Av., as shown and the remaining 5 were built in Italy to matching specification. The storied past on this car includes once being owned by Phil Spector, who drove it around LA with it's intact markings from after its Daytona Endurance and Le Mans appearances, then used to set speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats, marked as such when Spector owned it, somewhat intact original but worse for wear. The car then ended up in a storage unit, the owner passing when their 'caregiver' assumed possession without proper ownership and sold it to a collector. The whole ensuing aftermath included a huge legal litigation over the 'rightful owner' of this near Priceless part of Motorsport History, now restored to original and slightly different than the subsequent 5 Italian versions, so this is the first of only 6 produced '
