I’ve been so conditioned to look at my cat’s behind that now I do it instinctively even though I don’t need to.

The first month he spent with us he was really young and we couldn’t tell if he was a girl or a boy so we’d constantly be looking to see if anything changed and we could tell.

Then I got him neutered and had to constantly monitor his little wounds to make sure they healed well. (Good thing I did too bc he was really good about it at first and then started grooming them too much)

Then he kept eating hair and getting poop stuck in his butt, so I had to be on the lookout for that.

And now he’s finally normal but my brain doesn’t trust it so any time his booty faces me I stare at it with the detective mode overlay monitoring for nothing specific before finally I’m like, wait why am I looking at your butt.

I'm guessing it has to do with the area, but I had a female not-so-stray cat spayed last year, and between the check-up, shots, and blood tests, the bill was $580, and that included staying over the night before and after the spay.

One of the cats I adopted from a shelter was supposed to be neutered, and wasn't, and I want to think that only cost me less than $200. He didn't get any of the pre-op bloodwork done, but he had been seeing the vet regularly for a year prior, so that may have been why. For him, I brought him in before work, waited ~30 minutes, and then took him to work with me so I could keep an eye on him as the anesthesia wore off.

Before that, I took our other female cat to get spayed at a different vet, and they quoted me $750 (this was about 9 years ago) so I took her to a low cost clinic instead where it cost $215 and included her rabies shot and a snap test for FIV/FeLV and whatever vaccinations kittens get. After she was spayed, I asked around and found out that particular vet had higher than average prices, and switched vets.

it's actually less than what I expected, because I remember Pangur and Grim had huge bills for their spays

I'm guessing my location has a lot to do with the price! I'm in Toronto, and most cats here are owned pets.
