New rules mean pets can travel freely between Great Britain and Northern Ireland
A new agreement between the EU and the UK will allow pet movements between Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland) and Northern Ireland to continue easily and recognises the UK’s rabies- and tapeworm-free status. The agreement aims to make crossing the Irish Sea easier for pet owners as well as travellers with assistance dogs. Since 2021, Northern Ireland has stopped pet border checks with…

Ohohoho Sam reprogramming Guard dog Dream.
He tells him to fight him and at first Dream refuses. Obviously. He tells him ti play dead. Over and over and over until Something in Dream snaps and he fights. Not with the dull wooden Sword Sam gave him. With his claws and teeth. Throws his frail frame into him hard enough to rattle his bones. Sam's armor has thorns, all it serves is to draw gashes on his pale skin.
The adrenaline runs out and he collapses. Sam pets him on the head. "Good boy."
#IF YOU CAN CORRECTLY GUESS WHY SAM IS DOING THIS YOU GET 1000 POINTS#guard dog au#happy chip au#hmmmm#chipped au? as a name#like microchipped for a pet and happy chip for ardent#dreblr

I love the trope of leaving a baby on a nice couples doorstep when it’s set in modern times because it is so funny to me
That’s not how babies work, my guy. You can’t just transfer ownership like a car, it’s not finders keepers. They can’t just take in this baby and act like it’s theirs, this baby has legal documentation. You’ve not given them a baby you’ve given them the very weird chore of figuring out how to report a random abandoned doorstep baby
#I love babies being treated like microchipped pets#like if the owner doesn’t respond to the letter in 30 days you just get to keep them

Forgor if I asked this. But a question about Millie's Radio Collar AU. Would something like an under the skin microchip be possible? Idk if they actually make those kind of tracking devices, but would a Clan cat notice something was in their scruff and have it taken out?
Microchips don't have GPS; they are a thing that is scanned when a cat is taken to a vet or shelter. You can't track an animal through an implant.
Or, certainly not in the 2000s when Millie was collared. I referenced the Sirtrack catalogue for the device she wears, the same product that was used for Meerkat Manor. It was absolutely top of the line at the time, that show couldn't have happened without the advancements put into that collar.
So... short answer is no. That's not how microchips work lmao
#ALSO not accusing you of this anon; but GPS Microchips are part of a certain conspiracy theory#So I would be wary if you hear anyone talk about them#99% of the time it's just misinfo because no one knows how microchips actually work#Not malice#BUT be a bit wary if you ever hear it in a serious context#There might be some GPS *implants* I don't know about though. BUT what I am saying is make sure you trust the source when they're mentioned#But microchips carry predetermined information#Like phone numbers and contact info in the case of pets#And then they are scanned to reveal that info#So they could be helpful for the project to make sure none of the clan cats get euthanized in a shelter#Should they leave the territory#But not for tracking no#Millie's radio collar au

Thank you Facebook memories for reminding me that six years ago today, my friend took a stray cat to the vet. This cat had been hanging around their apartment complex for a while, and they'd been feeding him and generally getting to be friends. But it took time for him to trust them enough to get him inside and into a cat carrier.
But six years ago today, they were able to bring him to a vet to get scanned for a microchip. And he had one. He had somehow gotten himself to the other side of town from his family and had been missing for a year and a half. And in December 2017 he went home!
I get emotional every time I think of it. Just imagine, your cat has been gone for eighteen months and you've grieved, you're maybe still grieving because you never knew what happened, and then you get a phone call.

ohhhh i want a cat so baddddd I've never gone this long without a cat in my living space. what happened to mrrow?? mrrrroow?
#it's just not financially feasible bc I'd have to pay a 300 dollar per deposit for it and I'd have to pay the adoption fee#and yeah there's plenty of strays around here but I can't afford the vet checks to take one in#the local pet stores sell cats that have already had all that that come in from a nearby rescue#and the adoption fee for them would be way cheaper than the vet costs#plus sometimes they will help you reprogram a microchip if the cat has one and the original owner surrendered it#maybe soon i gotta see where i stand on bills first but i have to remember I'd also have to buy all the stuff to take care of a cat#which is also expensive#i think im going to start gradually collecting cat supplies for now and then when spring fafsa money comes in I'll be able to go get one#but goddd i wish i was financially stable i want a kittyyyyy#im already having to keep an eye on my dog though cause she's getting older and i honestly can't afford regular vet visits for her#so I can't get another animal yet anyway#i need to get pet insurance for my dog tbh

From Downtown Dog Rescue in Los Angeles: NEVER LOSE HOPE of finding your lost dog. Frosty had been lost for five years, and because his family microchipped him, they were reunited last week at the South LA Shelter. Please microchip your pets even if you think they will never run away or they are trained. Accidents happen and sometimes the only way back home for a beloved pet starts with having a registered microchip.

Mandatory microchipping for cats comes into force in UK
Millions of cat owners in England could be fined up to £500 if they fail to microchip their cat and register it on a database.
The legislation applies to cats aged 20 weeks and over, but of the estimated nine million domestic cats in the country, up to 2.2 million are still unchipped, according to the charity Cats Protection.
A veterinary procedure to microchip a cat costs between £20 and £30, the charity said.
Around a quarter of owners who had not chipped their cats said it was because their pet does not go outside, while around 14% said it could be identified by its collar, the charity’s research said.
Owners found not to have their pet microchipped will be given 21 days to have it implanted or face a financial penalty. The mandatory scheme is designed to make it easier to reunite lost or stray domestic cats with their owners.
Madison Rogers, head of advocacy, campaigns and government relations for Cats Protection, said:
“Some owners think they are never going to go through the trauma of losing their pet cat, but in the last year 115,000 pet cats in England went missing and never returned home. Cats are nimble and extremely agile and can easily slip out without us noticing. Many lost cats live a frightening life on the streets. No food, no water, no shelter, no veterinary care and constantly at risk of severe injury or death from many hazards such as cars and wild animals. Collars can easily drop off, become damaged so that the address details become unreadable and, if they are not quick release, can become snagged on obstacles like tree branches, causing injuries to the cat. A microchip is safe, stays with your cat for its lifetime and is linked to contact details that are stored safely in a database.”
Nutmeg, a cat belonging to Sandra Sinclair, a teacher from Tooting in south-west London, was found wandering the streets of Ascot in Berkshire, 30 miles from home, after going missing.
The cat was reunited with its family after its microchip was scanned by Cats Protection.
Mrs. Sinclair said only Nutmeg would know how he ended up in Ascot, but added the family were “relieved” he had been microchipped. Alice Potter, cat welfare expert at the RSPCA, said:
“We have seen cats coming into our care who are sadly not microchipped and may never be reunited with their owners. On average, 11% of all cats coming into the RSPCA’s care are still not microchipped. We’ve also rescued cats who have been microchipped but the details haven’t been kept up to date, which is arguably even more frustrating as it means cats spend a long time in our care whilst we fruitlessly try to contact the owner with out-of-date information. However, we’ve also seen countless stories of cats that have been reunited with their owners thanks to a tiny microchip – showing what this change of legislation will achieve for animal welfare.”
Owned cats must be microchipped before reaching 20 weeks of age, with their contact details stored and kept up to date on a pet microchipping database. This includes cats that usually only stay indoors.
Microchipping is not compulsory for free living cats that live with little or no human interaction or dependency, such as farm, feral or community cats. The legal deadline was confirmed in legislation laid in March 2023 giving owners overs a year to comply with the new requirements.

Reminder that if you own a pet to please have tags WITH your contact information and/or have your pet microchipped.
I have had to pick up two loose dogs this last week (one of which it was too late and the dog was deceased). Neither dogs had tags or microchip. The one owner eventually found one of my multiple postings and they were able to reunite. The other I have not been able to find any postings for and I do not know if I'll ever be able to notify the owner of the fate of their dog.
Even if you think "not my pet" remember it can happen to ANYONE due to any circumstance.
#if your pet cannot safely wear a collar YOU need to take the responsibility to microchip your pet.#collars can fall off and break too#animal death
