Yeah. Octonauts headcannons. Ctgd edition.

After I drew that art. I started thinking about their design. And the ones that suffered the most from the headcanon design were Dashi, Peso and Tweak.. ,nvm

(If there is no orientation flag in the pride headcanons, then they are hetero)

Their age is by human standards.

I also wanted to add flags of countries there, for headcanons of their nationalities. But I haven’t figured out where Kwazii comes from yet. Aeaeaah

And about vegimals. I don't know how many there are. But I'll figure it out later. :)

Octonauts Headcanons because they consume my brain (sleep edition)

Shellington cannot sleep if he isn't holding something, usually a plush toy or his own paw.

Dashi takes a while to get comfortable, tossing and turning for up to an hour.

Captain Barnacles has a special cooling blanket because polar bear.

The vegimals will routinely sleep in one big pile of the greenhouse floor for no apparent reason.

When stressed, Peso will make a nest out of blankets and pillows to sleep in.

Kwazii will knead his pillow before he goes to bed.

Tweak is a very active sleeper. She's a sleep-talker and -walker.

Inkling will occasionally fall asleep in the library. His little ear things will also twitch if you touch them.

Octonauts Headcanons

May add to this, as I go:

Captain Barnacles:

Just everyone’s Dad™

All of them, except for Professor Inkling has called him Dad at least once. He doesn’t mind.

Nobody has ever seen him cry.

He spends one on one time with each of the crew members whenever he can (typically once a week with each of them).

Sings in the shower

Showers in the morning

Has pretty strict routines, but can also be flexible, given the unpredictability of life as an Octonaut

His birthday is in October. (I Googled when that flower that blooms every twelve years does so, to see if I could narrow down what time of year his birthday is. Apparently, the peak blooming period is in September/October and with OCTOber, I figured it fits!)

If anybody on the Octopod were to go to his room and tell him they had a nightmare, he would let them sleep with him. (The only ones who do are Peso and the Vegimals.)

Sort of a joke headcanon, but I'mma add it anyway: He has reoccurring dreams about playing his accordion on stage, with hundreds of adoring fans cheering for him.

Kwazii:

ADHD

Not just afraid of spiders, but needles too (not that he’d ever admit it!)

Often takes the GUP-B out just for the fun of it, but will also do so to get out of something (normally cleaning or when the Captain’s playing his accordion)

Sneaks into the Captain’s room to play with his model ships

Such a sweet tooth

Messiest of all of them

Peso:

Intimidated by Captain Barnacles when they first met

Stopped feeling that way after a difficult mission, where the Captain told Peso he was very proud of him

Puts the Captain on a pedestal

Looks up to all the Octonauts, but of course, he looks up to the Captain the most

Youngest and most recent to join

Still pretty recent to join when the series started

Anxiety

He has hundreds of family members and he remembers the names and birthdays of every single one.

Shellington:

Autistic

Bullied as a child; Pearl stuck up for him and they were extremely close as a result

His satchel is a comfort item and a seemingly bottomless pit. If you see him pull things out of it, you’ll think, Wow! How did you fit all that in there?

Mother calls him Shelly; she’s the only one who does so

(I can’t remember where I saw this theory, but I think it makes a lot of sense.) In addition to marine biology, he has an interest in linguistics. That’s how he was able to learn Vegimalese.

Does not care if you interrupt one of his infodumps. He will just keep talking.

Clumsiest and most absentminded of the crew

Do NOT watch any nautical themed cartoon with him (e.g. SpongeBob or Finding Nemo). He will just spend the entire time pointing out all the inaccuracies.

Even though the Captain is her dad and Kwazii’s her brother, she’s the mum of the Octopod.

Most painfully slow driver you can imagine

Gives the best advice

Shellington was one of his (most talented) students. That was how Shellington got the job with the Octonauts.

Never leaves the library unless he absolutely has to

Leave him alone with a child and he has no clue what he's supposed to do

Also the case when someone's crying

Vegimals:

Always make sure they have a supply of everyone’s favourite flavour of kelp cake in case anybody needs some emergency comfort food

Often sleep holding hands (they learned this from Shellington when they were babies)

Sometimes sleep with one of the Octonauts (mostly Shellington, but sometimes the others as well)

We know they get stuck in the kitchen vent. Well, I bet half the time, they get stuck while showing the other Vegimals how they got stuck!

Octonauts Culture Headcanons: (mostly Barnacles because he's my favorite) (with a focus on languages):

Be warned, this is long af lol

Barnacles (& his family):

1. I've said it before, but he's Inuit, and was raised to speak Inuktuk (the language is very varied in names, with many dialects, but by my research, that is the broadest term for it)

2. In the Navy, it was mostly drilled out of him, and he practically forgot it for many years until he spent his angst time with Bianca and Tracker and re-learned it. Now, he loves to speak it with them, and sometimes yaps in it with his crew to mess with them (because no one understands it)

3. When the cubs visit, they speak Inuktuk with Barnacles, and often have to be reminded to speak English with the Octonauts (again, because no one understands the language, and they're hyper little children taking 90 mph)

4. Sometimes when Barnacles is talking about/to Bianca, Tracker, or the cubs, he'll use their Inuit names, and anyone else in the conversation has to be like "pause, who was that again?"

5. In the cub scouts, everyone spoke Inuktuk, or Russian, as the cubs all unanimously decided to learn it to surprise Natquik (I imagine it was his birthday or smthn, and they all sprung out and said "Happy Birthday!" In Russian. He cried tears of joy for hours.) --- I headcanon Natquik is half Inuit, and also knows the Russian dialect : Nunik.

6. When Barnacles wants to yap/is homesick but can't get in touch with any other Inuit characters, he gets down in the dumps because no one else will understand him/relate to his culture. So, in an effort to eliminate these sad spells, the crew are trying their best to learn more about Inuit culture and languages.

7. He's good with accents as he's heard hundreds in his travels, and can mimick most of them, including the thickest ones (uses this to bond/mesh with his crew's wide range of accents)

8. Pretty good at Vegimalese, but still sometimes has to ask Shellington what a certain string of chirps and trills meant

Languages/ spoken : AMER English, EURO/UK English, Inuktuk (several dialects), Spanish (for Peso), French, & Scottish Gaelic (he pretty much speaks at least a little of everything from hearing it all over the world)

Kwazii (& Calico Jack):

1. I've toyed around with his background for a long time, but I finally settled (at least for now) that the two pirates are from Barbados. So, they grew up speaking with both pirate slang and Bajun English (Barbados-Cajun English) along with a flurry of other languages because pirates were a giant mixing pot of cultures)

2. Sometimes, Kwazii's Bajun accent will escape, and he has to remind himself to tone it down because it and the many other accents he's accumulated into his speech are so thick that no one can understand him. (Calico Jack is way worse and often goes on and on speaking in utter incomprehensible gibberish)

3. Being a pirate (and because i said so), Kwazii had always been good with pixking up on languages and dialects, so when Peso was still new to the crew and had no one really to talk to (as everyone intimidated him and no one knew Spanish), Kwazii learned it so they could bond (super freaking cute)

4. Calico Jack learned Brazilian Portuguese when stuck in the Amazon, cuz that was the natural language for the animals and such. So he taught it to Kwazii, and they occasionally chit chat in it.

5. When talking to Calico Jack, they speak a hundred different languages, all mingled together at one time (often several la,guages in one scentene), and it gives anyone trying to listen in whiplash. It's a very effective deterrent/security measure when sharing secrets in public.

Languages spoken : AMER English, Spanish, Brazillian Portuguese, Bajun English, Scottish Gaelic, and tidbits of other languages from the pirate mixing pot (he's the most fluent of the crew in Inuktuk, although it's proving to be a challenging language to learn)

Tweak (& Ranger Marsh):

1. Florida people. /j

2. Southern Floridian (very yeehaw, very demure) raised to speak English, but also half Cajun French (on her mom's side) and can speak several dialects of French, but is most comfortable in Cajun French. (Tweak and Kwazii bond over being partly Cajun in language)

Languages spoken : French, AMER English

Dashi (& Ryle):

1. African-Amer-Australian, but hides the thickness of her accent well. When she gets mad, though, she goes crazy with slang (Kwazii thinks it's funny and makes her mad on purpose to hear "her funny words")

2. Shellington is Scottish, and they are besties, so she took it upon herself to learn Scottish Gaelic for him

3. She learned French for Tweak, too, because she's a girl's girl (and a girlboss)

4. Learned Spanish for Peso so they could gossip (pop off besties)

5. Used to be a pilot (which is why she can so easily fly the Octoray) and Japan was her favorite place to travel, so she learned the language.

6. Like Kwazii, she is good at picking up languages (cuz pilot = going everywhere (but isn't as good as Kwazii))

7. When video calling/hanging out with Ryla, her accent gets thicker untentionally

Languages spoken : AUST English, AMER English, EURO/UK English, Scottish Gaelic, French, Spanish, & Japanese (with tidbits of others)

Shellington (& Pearl and Periwinkle):

1. SCOTTISH MAN, SAVE ME SCOTTISH MAN

2. Grew up speaking both EURO/UK English and Scottish Gaelic (very fluent in both)

3. When visiting Pearl and Peri, they all speak Scot. Gaelic. One time, they brought Kwazii along, and out of nowhere, he picked up on the tea-time language and joined in. It freaked the otters out fr

4. Peri forgets to speak English to the Octonauts like the polar bear cubs (they are scout-group friends, change my mind) (I also ship Bianca x Pearl, sooooo they are all kinda step-siblings)

5. The only member to fully understand Vegimalese

Languages spoken : EURO/UK English, AUST English (for Dashi, although his accent isn't very good), Vegimalese, & Scottish Gaelic

Peso (& his family):

1. Hispanic. I will fight you for this. /j (AMERICAN DUB RAAAAH 🦅🦅🦅)

2. He knows a good deal of Bajun for Kwazii and Calico Jack and learned Brazillian Portuguese for CJ, as for the first few years of his Octoagent-cy, it was what he spoke the most

3. A lot like Barnacles in the fact that he knows a ton of languages, but it's mostly just how to ask medical questions and comfort frightened patients

4. Pinto also forgets to speak English with the crew and speaks ONLY Spanish with Peso when they are alone. Peso will try to talk to him in English and Pinto with exclusively respond in Spanish (younger brother activity fr)

5. Learning Gaelic to better listen to Shellington's yap sessions (nerds = best bros) (or bf's, cuz I fw that)

Languages spoken : EURO/UK English, AMER English, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, & some Scottish Gaelic.

Inkling (& Min and Natquik):

1. Grew up speaking EURO English, but learned Chinese Mandarin for Min, and sometimes speaks it without realizing.

2. 🗣🗣🗣HE AND NATQUIK ARE GOOD FRIENDS BECAUSE THEY ARE BOTH BARNACLES'S FATHERS. So, he learned Russian to better communicate with Natquik, who forgets to speak English often

3. He learned Gaelic for Shellington because they are scholarly nerd friends, they yap together

BARNACLES

Barnacles learned basic English as an extracurricular when he was younger, but he only really learned it (and gained the accent) when he went to university in Manitoba (polar bear capital of the world and the university works by, with, and for indigenous people with a lot of foreign people coming to study). he's got a similar thing with the speaking Russian and I'm gonna steal the specific language of inuktuk from you.

Also because the Arctic has so many different countries in it (although everyone in the Arctic considers themselves as just "the Arctic because wtf are u gonna do about borders? come through the snow storm and take me to another snowy white spot that looks exactly the same (to you) as the other snowy white spot I was in? FCK borders in the Arctic no one there gives a sht)

Anyways they do have a common sign language because I LOVE SIGN LANGUAGE AND WILL INSERT IT EVERYWHERE I CAN

KWAZII:

Kwazii did grow up with a very mixed pirate crew, although A LOT of members were either English speaking or Japanese speaking predominantly , he also watched a lot of old kids anime as a kid in Japanese as well lol. not to mention the native island cultures they often interacted with including my very fictional "meowri" (they're sphinx cats with ttattoes and very loosely inspired by Polynesian cultures)...

Because of the general culture of the pirate crew being diverse (esp cuz of interactions on ports/other crews) there was also a lot slang and terms that was known shared and sort of used as a basic communication system for everyone.

so there'd be random Spanish and Arabic terms from the most niche origin points just being used commonly, and that includes a lot of outdated ones, cultural sayings, or words that just don't exist in a lot of other languages, and etc

not to mention that because of how old the pirate clan he was a part of was (founded in 1920s) and because of the different crews there's genuinely like hundreds and hundreds of them being in these isolated communities and even being born and raised in them. so there's a lot of words that cant even be found anywhere else, so kwazii does get frustrated when he cant express what he wants to say but he just... cant even translate the word

OR the words everyone else uses for it doesn't make any sense! it... it kinda makes him feel stupid sometimes

also because his clan did work with a lot of wild animals as non tech sources of information (you feed them and then they get u good info!! for strategy, spying, whatever! and no one even blinks an eye cuz its just a crow (an extremely intelligent bird)!) but uh... the problem with that is that well alot of animals uhhhh misunderstand stuff

so that means that all the names of locations, descriptions of wild animals, ways of naming ships, and all the information would've have to have been animal comprehension friendly. not to mention be more coded cuz of non-friend pirate clans and G O V E R N M E N T S- so I'd get some wacky name replacements for all sorts of things.... its really a mess XD, a beautiful mess but still

also explained why so many of the pirate tales about *insert scientific name of the episode's animal* was often over exaggerated with strange details... including ones pirates shouldn't even known. Like how could they know about sword fish making the water around them warm?

its because a lot of that info CAME from the animals... animals who... don't understand numbers and say things like "and it was 20 feet tall!" even if it was only 5.... because it FEELS that tall to the small animal yk? also not understanding science on a deeper level so its all explained in a strange way. Ofc the pirates DONT help the issue because they be exaggerating the hell out of their own stories-

yeah sure the snake was "long as the river itself" Cj and SURE it was 20 sharks or whatever and not THREE that chased you kwazii

lying in story telling is just a form of pirate love actually, so is pranks and pickpocketing but kwazii refrains lol... this turned into me yapping about the blorbo

BASIC COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

Speaking of the basic communication thing, the octonauts crew was trained on the main words for rescue related communication in more common languages like Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, etc and will take time to learn (or just refresh) before heading to a new location.

Because in my own au the communication abilities of the wildlife is a lot more limited based on their level of intelligence. so an orca would technically be bi lingual in their own orca language and be able to speak nearly identical to a humanoid person

also like I said before about sign language, BASIC PIRATE SIGNS THAT ONLY OTHER PIRATES KNOW AYYYYYYYYY

Australian Dashie my beloved<3 honestly she WOULD have learned several languages and learned more for/from her friends shes so capable and incredible fr. also FCK it MORE sign language! I headcanon shes CODA, which means you're the child of one or two parents who are both either hard of hearing or Deaf! so she actually was learning sign very VERY young from her mom <3 and well the rest of her family cuz they all knew it lol

peso is obviously bilingual and he's the BEST at the basic communications skills thing and most well versed cuz he deals with the most animals one on one, so he actually can communicate with pretty much all the animal creatures, even taking the time to learn some slang terms the animals might have learned so that they'll feel safer and more comfortable around him!

he also picks up on a lot of dialects especially since his cousins are so diverse

as for tweak she knows a lot of Spanish actually because hey! Miami has A LOT Spanish speakers, so much that's its actually made an entirely new developing dialect unique to the area!

tweak actually understands a decent amount of Japanese and Russian but.... not for normal conversations, more like because of all the engineering studying she did! research papers, studies, articles, lectures, books etc etc... so she could probably have a full conversation about the physics and math of submarines in those languages but if you wanted to talk about like... how you're feeling today or what you want for dinner she can not answer that LMSO

INKLING:

inkling would absolutely know like SO many languages, I have the headcanon that the reason he actually met barnacles in that university was actually because he studied LAND SPECIES for years (and continues to enjoy observing his crew and doing behavioural experiments on them without anyone noticing, esp since they're so diverse and they're in such a unique social environment on the octopod! but shhhh don't tell the others it would ruin the natural response they have! he does this with love btw)

hes also literally mega brained so I'd be surprised if he didn't at least understand the basics of any language the octonauts knew purely based on his own curiosity....

SHELLINGTON:

hehe Gaelic go brrrrrr

also because I headcanon Shellie as being a a mix of Eurasian otters and small clawed Asian otters, I think he does have some Philippine heritage and knows some Tagalog but not that much and he's a bit sad about that in all honesty. his *ss would also know latin

VEGIMALS:

IVE BEEN PLANNING TO MAKE A VEGIMALESE LANGUAGE POST:

ok so basically their language is entirely unique and not just because of them being the only known vegimals:

the thing is that their vocal cords (or vegetable/fish equivalent) isn't really made for the languages they hear on the octopod... or English.

the thing is they are their own little pod, and during their earliest developmental years they spent the MAJORITY of their time only with eachother or with shellington, what this means is that while some of the verbal and auditorial cues they have is just innate to vegimal understanding- (and also had difficult time replicating sounds shellington made, while it being easier to replicate a word one of the other vegimals made)

they quite literally made their own words for a lot of things while talking with eachother, before shellington had even realized! a lot of their language development did formulate very similarly to english (and Gaelic) because that's what they were hearing from shellington!

as they continue to grow and get older (they're really only about like 11 to me) their English has actually improved a lot, because they've learned how to mimic the others better, that's how they learned that the vegimals still used a lot of the literal baby talk words that shellington used with them while they were growing up, but just in their own original language

not to mention a lot of their language does have a lot of the meaning derived from the enunciation, tone, rhythm, and etc... so that means its a bit harder for those who just.. don't have the built in brain biology to distinguish those sounds to understand them

ofc shellington did literally raise them so its much much easier for him to understand because (whether he realizes it or not) he was actually learning the language AS they developed it! ofc over the years the other octonauts have actually started to subconsciously pick up on the meanings of those more subtle language features of vegimalese, and combined with knowing the vegimals slang/phrases, and the vegimals learning how to replicate more and more English ones, their understanding of the vegimals only keeps increasing

but to anyone else who isn't an octonaut its.... kinda like hearing a lil guy yip yip a bunch of gibberish and then everyone else in the room going "oh yes of course! that's a great idea Tototofrit! and don't worry, well make sure our fish friends aren't scared as we perform your very clever and crafty plan!"

also my friend said I can pull off a decent vegimal accent so if anyone wants any tips lmk (I would stim in vegimalese in middle school btw LMSO but I did learn a decent amount on how they pronounce things and their speech patterns... still working on perfecting it but I got some starter tips LOL)

also the reasons halibeet and pikato don't show up as much as the other vegimals is because they're just genuinely more introverted, halibeet and pikato do enjoy each other's quiet company tho (as well as the other vegimals, but they're really more homebodies who just aren't as into the whole adventure stuff)

SO!!!! this is a headcanon i’ve had for a while that dashi’s full name is dashi sauci dog

if u dont kno where the “sauci” part comes from, in the older octonauts days dashi’s name was sauci and she was called that in the books, before being changed to dashi

i hc dat everyone just called her sauci and wen peso was new he read one of the national seaographic books dashi photographed for, and after peso started calling her by her first name, it just caught onto everyone

tldr: peso started calling dashi as dashi instead of sauci and then everyone started calling her dashi

My octonauts headcannons

1.Shellington has the weakest immune system out of everyone (including the octoagents) he doesn't tell anyone when he's sick because he doesn't want to feel like a burden

2.captain barnacles sees peso as the son he never had which is why he treats peso like his son

3.kwazii when he's on catnip is so chaotic they have to clean up basically the whole octopod when it's over and it lasts around 3 hours

4.dashi used to have a habit of chasing her tail but started getting rid of that habit when she joined the Octonauts

5.Tweak is always doing something. it is almost impossible to see her doing nothing (nothing I mean just standing there blankly)

6.peso has had a couple of sleepless nights because of taking care of patients, but he makes it up by sleeping for quite a while after

7.inkling is one of the calmest octonauts he barely screams in fact if he DOES scream everyone runs to see if he's okay
