As a guide, you and I have approximately six billion heartbeats between us in this life. You may choose to see me as I’m wont to be seen. You may not. There’s an emphasis there on choice – nothing explicit, just what’s understood. Meanwhile, I wrestle with meanings and turn my attention to the conundrum of truth.

It shouldn’t be this difficult, I find myself saying. It shouldn’t. There is that which is incontrovertible. Numbered things, mathematics, not that which is open to subjective interpretation. After all, the sky is blue most of the time. But not always, if you want to be pedantic about it – and let’s face it, someone predictably will. Then there is that which flows through the individual lens and bleeds across semantics.

Signifier, signified. Absolute, on the one hand; limitless, on the other.

And it’s no different from how we started this existential experiment. Traipse your way back through the last two or three millennia, to the beginnings of anything faintly resembling recorded human history, and what do you find? A rather clear case of different epoch, same damn story.

The parameters haven’t changed in that sense. But we have, at least in the ways that inform our grasp of quantifiable reality. “The trans-generational meta-mind,” as Carl Sagan called it. Human consciousness, scientific consensus, revelation as it pertains to evidence-based innovation, and inevitably in the future, A.I.

But what of the rest? My mind, your mind, the cerebral multiplicity? The countless facets of what is seen versus what is known. If it’s your “truth,” is it my truth? Can it, does it, should it stand as universal? If so, does my perception have no value? And in that case, who decides?

It would seem prudent at this point to state that of course, I know that not all views are born equal nor should they be revered as such. There’s plenty of bullshit in the world. But it’s also important to recognise that we can have diversity of opinion and foster effective agreement, and it is a simultaneity that we’ve previously known.

Now I’m not always partial to Nietzsche. However, in terms of stances, this passage on perspectivism in The Genealogy of Morals is still worth a look:

“‘[O]bjectivity’ [ought to be] understood not as ‘contemplation without interest’ (which is a nonsensical absurdity), but as the ability to have one’s For and Against under control and to engage and disengage them, so that one knows how to employ a variety of perspectives and affective interpretations [Perspectiven und Affect-Interpretationen] in the service of knowledge. Henceforth, my dear philosophers, let us be on guard against the dangerous old conceptual fiction that posited a ‘pure, will-less, painless, timeless knowing subject’; let us guard against the snares of such contradictory concepts as ‘pure reason,’ ‘absolute spirituality,’ ‘knowledge in itself’: these always demand that we should think of an eye that is completely unthinkable, an eye turned in no particular direction, in which the active and interpreting forces [die aktiven und interpretirenden Krafte], through which alone seeing becomes a seeing-something, are supposed to be lacking; these always demand of the eye an absurdity and a nonsense. There is only a perspective seeing [ein perspektivisches Sehen], only a perspective ‘knowing’ [ein perspektivisches ‘Erkennen’]: and the more affects we allow to speak about something, the more eyes, different eyes, we can lend to the thing, the more complete will our ‘concept’ of this thing, our ‘objectivity,’ be. But to eliminate the will altogether, to suspend each and every affect, supposing we were capable of this – what would that mean but to castrate the intellect?”

To dispense with the critical eye-roll you could level here, it does at first glance appear that he’s attempting to have his epistemological cake and eat it, especially in light of The Will to Power. On closer inspection, it’s less contradictory and more in line with his general trend of drawing synonymity between perspective and interpretation. Interpretation that he defines as both ontological and evaluative – essential in its ubiquity – but nonetheless, never independent of external systems.

So the question becomes: Can civilisation practically be an aggregate of singular viewpoints?

Perhaps not. After all, every life is different, each experience filtered uniquely through synapses that belong to self and whatever cognitive biases we carry. Some might even declare us codified beyond each other’s comprehension. Divided, angry, lost. And yet... Just yet... There is a glimmer of hope.

What if perspectives may be utilised to illuminate the objective measure of a “truth” or proposition? What if, together, we may turn our minds to mattering? Unification, simplification, processes that might edify, then designate us more?

When we look into the eyes of another person, we see the sum of something greater than a collection of atoms and chemical reactions. Our instinct knows, as we must remember, that living isn’t merely a list of concepts; it’s the tenets we have for using them, the relationships that bind us to this planet and each other. It’s a way of talking, seeing, of taking the raw materials we are stewards of, and making them intelligible.

The differences between us aren’t insurmountable, Nietzsche holds. But rather, they are fundamental demarcations of our parallels. In other words, we may share the same imperative whilst appreciating the legitimacy of perspectival interests other than our own.

Of course, unity is relative to some extent, and perhaps less a unit of subject than disposition, which perhaps also leads us back to choice. Choice to engage. Choice to refrain. Choice to resist the ill-defined, and listen. Because character and the substance therein aren’t self-prescribed; they are the product of who we are. Not who we purport to be, edit or construct. Not via pixels but in the flesh of our singular selves, transmuted as Nietzsche writes, to earnest “art and reason”. A practice of peace, a theory of balance – and vice versa.

Because if nature can be a hypothesis, we can be the answer.
